RE: Re: [RCSE] JR 8103 lithium battery failure question

2003-04-02 Thread John Derstine
I went through this with my 10x. I did manage to replace it myself, but I am
in the business, and a professional risk taker. A joke :-}
I would not recommend replacing the battery yourself, in fact Horizon is
very reluctant to sell one to you for your own installation. Why? Several
reasons. It is hard soldered in, at least on the 10X. If you do not remove
it carefully you will damage the radio permanently. If you do not use a
grounded professional grade soldering iron you run the same risk of zapping
your radio innards. Moreover, the replacement cell is a generic type which
you have to modify by using a dremel tool to relieve some metal on the
solder tabs. Is it worth the risk to do it yourself?
I do usually send radios back for a bi yearly check up, If your radio is
more than three years old, take my advice and have it gone over and have the
Lithium cell replaced by the very competent Horizon tech dept. and protect
your warranty.

I just got my JR back from Horizon, and they changed that as part of their
standard procedure. All my settings were intact, so I'm betting that if you
have battery power, you can change that out / have it done.

Horizon had my (sorry-*ss) radio back to me inside of 2 weeks, for not much
money: I replaced my elevator/aileron stick and a switch, about 70 bucks
plus shipping.

Good luck,
Brent

I believe if you leave the TX battery connected you can change the
lithium without fear of losing any settings. I think I saw that
in the manual.

Andrew,

What you say is always a good idea. However, it can be done by the
consumer with some care. I recently got the "L" on one of my 8103s.
The change over probably made it 'batteryless' for 10 to 15 min. Lo,
and behold, the settings were still there. Maybe there is a big
capacitor in there somewhere that will hold the voltage for a small
period of time.

2003-04-01 Thread Jim Larkin
Why worry about what will happen ? Just send it back to Horizion Hobbies
and get a new Lith battery installed--and ask them to check the xmtr over
while they have it. I sent my 388 back last year and got excellent service,
reasonable prices and about a 2-3 week turnaround. No need to push your
luck. Jim

Karl,

I would be guessing, but even though a low battery condition exists on your
Lithium battery it should be at least a week possibly a month before it was
low enough to start to lose memory.

Has anyone experienced what really happens and how long after the flashing L
appears does the lithium battery last until it completely dies? Just
wondering in case this happens at an out of town contest if it would still
be safe to fly.
Thanks for any info,
