Transition to Maya - little help please :)
Hi guys, I've recently started to moving to Maya, mainly because of the kind of job I'm doing recently ( creation and rigs for games characters ). 1. Character binding: I used to save my envelope weights on my character in an external file, but in Maya I see that you need a source character ( with the envelope weights ) and a target ( which will receive the weights )...there are other ways/tools to accomplish that or this is a standard procedure inside Maya? 2. In Softimage I usually store my animation inside animation clips, mostly because very ofthen I can blend them properly and shrink/expand the animation itself...is there a similar way to do that inside Maya? 3. Is there a way to hide selected polygons? I searched around and I found basically nothing regarding this 4. Which are the essential tools which you raccomend to use inside Maya? I see there are quite a bit of skinning tools and auto-rigger, MEL/Python scripts, but I would like to have a overview of what could be usefull/time saving. 5. I was thinking to subscribe to digital tutors in order to teach myself basics and more advanced stuff and learn a proper workflow...other suggested site to learn Maya like a pro? :) Cheers Nicolas

We've been using it to test out the syflex sim, and it seems to be holding up, though we have had a lot of crashes to do with certain kristinka hair nodes. Re: Softimage Python versus Maya Python
The OpenMaya API is pretty crippled and missing tons of stuff from what I've read, seen, and worked with. It's a lot of bloated code to just get to objects you want. As Raf mentioned before though some things need to be run through it for performance sake. Getting and setting envelope weights for example. For the majority of the stuff I'm doing in Maya for tools and scripts it's PyMel. Eric T. Re: Softimage Python versus Maya Python
I dunno about everyone else, but I actually really like PyCharm a lot these days (went from NPP to Sublime to PyCharm). Being able to debug Python scripts is super helpful in Maya/XSI :) (haven't gotten around to trying to connect it with Nuke as well yet hehe) I don't really like PyMEL that much, I only use it when I need quick access to vector math functions etcNow that I'm more familiar with C++, I have to say the advice of everyone here to go ahead and 'do it in C++' from the get-go is a lot less painful overall than dealing with all the SWIG-stuff that I would have to go through when using PyMEL or OpenMaya. :D
Re: Softimage Python versus Maya Python
I would also recommend reading through this thread on the Python-Inside-Maya Google Group: https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/python_inside_maya/jb0lD8SXk_M https://groups.google.com/forum/#%21topic/python_inside_maya/jb0lD8SXk_M Lots of good info there. -Tim On 7/9/2014 10:40 AM, Yi Liang Siew wrote: I dunno about everyone else, but I actually really like PyCharm a lot these days (went from NPP to Sublime to PyCharm). XSI's 'Shift-click to check/uncheck multiple' inside a Qmenu?
I'm asking this here because XSI users will immediately know the behavior I'm trying to emulate. I want to recreate Soft's menu behavior whereby shift-clicking on a menu item will check/uncheck it, but keep the menu open and let you click on other entries as well. Is this behavior reproducible in PySide/PyQt, if so how? I'm searching around now, but wanted to drop a line here too. -- Tim Crowson Signature
RE: Softimage Python versus Maya Python
The problem isn't creating an arbitrary UI, I can do that with Win32, MFC, or even C++ QT. The issue is getting that UI to send/receive notifications with the host application to tap into their event hooks. Referenced mat libs inside of ref models?
Hi list, I'm currently working on a project with rather large assets including large object counts and very heavy geo (CAD data), so I'm referencing a lot of the models. Otherwise I would hit the 2GB scene size limit anyway and also for flexibility I would like to keep it as separated as much as possible. Thing is, we have only a few shaders that will be applied to all the objects. So I'd also like to use a referenced mat lib for the entire project and all the ref models inside it. That basically means two levels of referencing ( a referenced model will use a ref mat lib). A reference inside a reference. I never did that and I'm a bit concerned if this could potencially produce problems. Does anyone used referenced models that contained referenced mat libs? I'm on softimage2011 btw. Thanks, sven
RE: Referenced mat libs inside of ref models?
We're trying to use referenced materials right now. It's rather hit or miss. The referenced materials are actually a hack involving a dotXSI file which stores the material and shader information, then having that applied to the referenced models in the scene. Problem we've been encountering is sometimes upon loading the scene, the reference material assignments are lost as if they were never assigned in the first place. We don't know what causes this problem, but it's intermittent. Some scenes work just fine, others have this problem regularly. I do not advise using referenced materials on 2011. Re: Softimage Python versus Maya Python
py API v2 is actually pretty robust, and it certainly is fast. It doesn't miss a lot actually, contrary to what goes around, at least in terms of what you can do with it. What it does distinctly lack is a pass of hand crafted love. Most of it, if not its entirety, seems to be a SWIG wrapper built solely from the headers with the only tweaks being pruning what couldn't quite translate. What that results into is python that reads like crippled C++, because the API faces that kind of interface without pythonic additions, and on top of that C++ only features such as overloaded methods are not implemented, leaving you with more type handling than in Python than you would do in C++. pyMEL is a mix of hand crafted wrappers around different bits and bobs, and it shows, as it tries (and mostly manages) to wrap the lot in a pythonic way. If you are comfortable with it and can complete a task with it and read the code a week later there is no reason to not use the OM modules, it won't magically crap itself on you one day, the only real downside to it is simply that you end up writing this weird bastardized code in many cases. Some people can stomach it, personally I'd rather write in C++ right away if I'm not going to get python's advantages out of using it. That's true for the guts part of the client, and certainly for the DG. The DAG and scene item management side of things is generally quite painful in Maya, and while the OM modules have mostly everything, pyMEL will read better. The UI side of things you will be pretty much dealing with an only slightly smelly Qt all the time, so that's pretty good by any standard really, and probably better in Python than in C++ anyway. All in all all it is is that it's painful and could be much less so with a little additional work, not that it's not functional or too incomplete. Love that PySide is built in. I am wondering if you need to use PyMel … or if you can access everything directly through an object model API with Python. I am about to convert a lot of our tools this week. Also .. I would recommend checking out the Charcoal editor … its really sweet and has auto-completion for much of the api. M
Re: XSI's 'Shift-click to check/uncheck multiple' inside a Qmenu?
no idea how it would handle inside maya but, this should get you started: /code from PySide import QtGui, QtCore class XSITypeMenuThing(QtCore.QObject): def eventFilter(self, obj, event): mods = QtGui.QApplication.keyboardModifiers() if mods == QtCore.Qt.ShiftModifier: if event.type() in [QtCore.QEvent.MouseButtonRelease] and isinstance(obj, QtGui.QMenu): if obj.activeAction() and not obj.activeAction().menu(): obj.activeAction().trigger() return True return super(XSITypeMenuThing, self).eventFilter(obj, event) if __name__ == '__main__': app = QtGui.QApplication([]) window = QtGui.QMainWindow() menu = QtGui.QMenu(menu, window) fil = XSITypeMenuThing() menu.installEventFilter(fil) menu.addAction(QtGui.QAction('You', menu, checkable=True)) menu.addAction(QtGui.QAction('Will', menu, checkable=True)) menu.addAction(QtGui.QAction('Need', menu, checkable=True)) menu.addAction(QtGui.QAction('To', menu, checkable=True)) menu.addAction(QtGui.QAction('Send', menu, checkable=True)) menu.addAction(QtGui.QAction('Me', menu, checkable=True)) menu.addAction(QtGui.QAction('Money', menu, checkable=True)) window.menuBar().addMenu(menu) window.show() app.exec_() -- Jon Swindells jon_swinde...@fastmail.fm On Wed, Jul 9, 2014, at 07:10 PM, Tim Crowson wrote: I'm asking this here because XSI users will immediately know the behavior I'm trying to emulate. Oh wow, I was looking in another direction entirely. This looks more interesting though. Thanks for sharing this because I would not have figured this out at all. I tend to stick to the pre-packaged events and setups, and rarely roll anything really original. -Tim On 7/9/2014 5:39 PM, Jon Swindells wrote: no idea how it would handle inside maya but, this should get you started: /code from PySide import QtGui, QtCore class XSITypeMenuThing(QtCore.QObject): def eventFilter(self, obj, event): mods = QtGui.QApplication.keyboardModifiers() if mods == QtCore.Qt.ShiftModifier: if event.type() in [QtCore.QEvent.MouseButtonRelease] and isinstance(obj, QtGui.QMenu): if obj.activeAction() and not obj.activeAction().menu(): obj.activeAction().trigger() return True return super(XSITypeMenuThing, self).eventFilter(obj, event) if __name__ == '__main__': app = QtGui.QApplication([]) window = QtGui.QMainWindow() menu = QtGui.QMenu(menu, window) fil = XSITypeMenuThing() menu.installEventFilter(fil) menu.addAction(QtGui.QAction('You', menu, checkable=True)) menu.addAction(QtGui.QAction('Will', menu, checkable=True)) menu.addAction(QtGui.QAction('Need', menu, checkable=True)) menu.addAction(QtGui.QAction('To', menu, checkable=True)) menu.addAction(QtGui.QAction('Send', menu, checkable=True)) menu.addAction(QtGui.QAction('Me', menu, checkable=True)) menu.addAction(QtGui.QAction('Money', menu, checkable=True)) window.menuBar().addMenu(menu) window.show() app.exec_() -- Jon Swindells jon_swinde...@fastmail.fm On Wed, Jul 9, 2014, at 07:10 PM, Tim Crowson wrote: I'm asking this here because XSI users will immediately know the behavior I'm trying to emulate.
