Re: Anybody here have a view on Houdini vs Katana for lookdev/lighting workflows.

2018-07-05 Thread Ivan Vasiljevic
I know this is totally out of your focus but have you tried Octane
Standalone?
You also do have it as Houdini plugin and it can easily transfer complete
scene data to a standalone app for further look dev/rendering, with a
single click of a button...

Just my 2ct.

Cheers.

Re: OTish and F****** Mayaish rant - or the multiple UV sets conundrum

That's why 3rd party rendering plugins developed it for maya distribution.
Redshift has it, Vray has it and since Arnold is not 3rd party no more...
Maybe you should ask for it... :)

Re: RealLens 2

2017-02-16 Thread Ivan Vasiljevic
Hi,

This post is more then 2 years old :) but I have a question.
When transferring camera from XSI with alembic film aperture gets written
from xsi camera parameter and not Real Lens 2 parameters. That becomes
important for renderer like Octane.
Any chance of Real Lens 2 working along with XSI's aperture parameters?

Cheers.

Last year as well as on the start of this one we have been mostly busy with
creating sneakers for Adidas projects for Woodblock Berlin.
As there's a lot of questions around for projects still done in XSI I
thought I should post it here.
Spot after spot we ended up doing around ~30 sneaker asset so far, and
counting... :)

Our portfolio page turn out to look like an adidas page now:

Moving and approving from one project to another we managed to amp some

Re: Continued use of Softimage question

2015-08-19 Thread Ivan Vasiljevic
I agree with Andy and Francois here.
Main reason Soft is crashing is combination with Arnold, Redshift look
development is just great compared to Arnold.
Yes going to main take to change parameter, crazy... But I got used to stay
in main take and just change rendering take from drop down box. Not perfect
I know but not so bad I'd say...
And Houdini nodes, just great, copy paste from scene to scene, just change
paths for vdb's and alembic, not Soft still but far ahead of Maya(waiting
for their new passes system, I see lot's of copy paste from Soft, or it's
CUT paste now :/)

Cheers.

Re: Alembic Crate workflow - what do you guys do?

2015-04-22 Thread Ivan Vasiljevic
Hi Morten,

Here at DAT <http://digitalassettailors.com> we are exporting Maya geometry
via alembic to XSI for shading purposes(yes plenty geo big files = slow)
later on we export ASS archives for non-deformed parts from XSI shading
scene, logically split, front left wheel, rear left wheel, car body etc.
Then we plug it on standin objects in rendering scene where we transfer
animation via animation curves or via alembic...
I guess best way would be to export transformed nulls from Maya to Soft via
alembic for all those parts and attach standins to dummy objects under
those nulls?
Then you just overwrite your alembics per shot and your ass files when
shading updated.

Hope this makes sense.

Cheers.

I had posted a replicable and verified bug regarding the fact that a few--and
likely many--commands do not iterate over multiple deltas attached to a
reference model. While I have no idea if that bug is a low enough hanging fruit
to fix before all of us lose support in 2016, I also have no idea whether or
not we will even be seeing an SP2 for Softimage. As my subscription is coming
due in a couple months, I am wondering if it will even be worth it. It
certainly is not worth it for Maya (even with Bifrost.) Also I am still unclear
as to the status of the permanent license of Softimage if I do another
subscription.

Thanks,

Agreed!

My question would be weather new Dfg in Maya will be just part of Bifrost or it
will be as mighty as ice and so one could use it for rigging, non simulated

Hypershade, node editor, hypergraph and now dfg...

Re: Rendering Fuzz on farm flicker problem

2014-07-30 Thread Ivan Vasiljevic
Hi Nick,

Thanks for reply.
When setting up fuzz for animation it automatically set's up "cage
strands"(if that's what you were thinking of under "cage deform"?)
compound. So yes it's in my setup. I am also caching strands and not
simulating them. It is so not predictable for me. Sometimes it works,
sometimes not, so if you have anything that might help I would really
appreciate it!

Thanks.

Re: Rendering Fuzz on farm flicker problem

2014-07-29 Thread Ivan Vasiljevic
So after testing various options I can say that my Fuzz setup always
flickers inside view-port too, so nothing to do with rendering stuff.
I've seen tests on vimeo with fuzz animation(https://vimeo.com/91257776).
Did anyone had luck setting it up for animation without any flicker here?

Thanks.

I've cached the stuff. 100 frames took 8h to cache. ~800Mb file size per
frame. Still flickering!!!
I'll investigate further... With smaller strand count but the problem seems
not to be consistent with smaller strand count if I remember correctly.

Yeah caching will definitely help, and is a proper way to go, it's just
that it goes real slow with 4mil strands and I am not sure if caching on
multiple machines would 'cause flicker, I'll go through that process on

Hey Emilio,

Quick question.
Where did you gather data for film back for example for Arri Alexa.
>From my search it's not matching to yours, not saying I am right, just
wanna check.
http://www.arrimedia.com/alexa/technical-data

Capture 23.760 x 13.365 mm/0.9354 x 0.5262” 16:9 2880 x 1620
Best.

Re: A confession

2014-03-19 Thread Ivan Vasiljevic
You should go with something more simpler for start:

Try opening few outliners as you would often have few explorer opened in SI.
Since hypershade is passe try opening fancy node editor and try to branch
material based on your object selection, something default branched in
render tree.

I know there is more Maya-SI users let's have more of these here... I have
plenty more on my mind...

I don't want to break anything, but I'd love to free up space.

Subject: XSIBatch python does not support named arguments?

Hi

Quick question:
I have a new python script and I named the args, but XSIBatch ignores the arg
names and placed them in the same order as written in the commandline. No
matter the arg name.
The issue is that I do not want to/can not specify all parameters.
So I cannot set them into the same order as in the script.
Am I missing something?

Commandline:
XSIBatch -thread 8 -script "kso_softimage.py" -lang Python -main main -args
-inSName "rendertest.scn" -inDb "To_Delete" -inPass "PassA"
-inKSOMode true

kso_softimage.py:
def main(inKSOMode="", inSName="",inDb="",inPass=""):
logMessage("","##")
logMessage("","inKSOMode " + str(inKSOMode))
logMessage("","inSName " + str(inSName))
logMessage("","inDb " + str(inDb))
logMessage("","inPass " + str(inPass))

Output:
  ##
  inKSOMode rendertest.scn
  inSName To_Delete
  inDb PassA
  inPass true

Subject: softimage.tv - Hello World!

Hi All,

Would like to announce the launch of softimage.tv<http://softimage.tv> created
to showcase the best softimage work out there. It's meant to be mainly a video
depository but hoping it will also function as a hub for the community.

The idea sparked from Andy Moorer's Nike Evolution write up on that Nike job, I
thought amazing effort but how do we showcase it a bit more? The list and
si-community are great place to discuss soft, but I think a lot users are not
on it, not to mention producers, agencies and decision makers.

It is still early days so this is a work in progress, we will be adjusting the
layout based on the predominant content we receive. This is where eveyone can
help us a bit, If you ever created a tutorial for soft, uploaded a test, done
an amazing tool, have a showreel to show off, finished a good looking job
help us by submitting it.

You can directly submit your videos via very simple form in the website (Submit
video). All you need to send is a title, vimeo/youtube url, and description.
The wordpress will look after the thumbnails, then all we have to do is approve
it. Ideally you will be logged in when submitting, so the system will put all
videos under your profile.

The website was created by myself with the help of Cesar Saez . Would love to
know what you guys think about it, and how we can move things foward.

Best,
Cris
