Re: RE: Google Earth Pro 3D data or similar? edit - Terrain Generators Q?

2016-05-19 Thread Morten Bartholdy
Thanks for the advice Klaus. Your mail made me go check it out again (did so
long ago in a much earlier version) but I still find it kind of rough around
the edges, with a bit clunky navigation and poor preview capabilities.

I am sure there is more to discover and smarter ways to work with it once you
get dug in, but I would say v4 looks very promising. I will definately keep an
eye on that.

Previously I have used Vue for rendering skies and cloudscapes, but it is like
working with a strayjacket on while looking through a narrow tube, and while
rendering looks nice, it is sometimes hard to get just the kind of detail and
shapes you want, and the connectivity plugins for handling animation are awful.

At least Terragen boasts fbx import and the Terragen v4 cloud stuff looks
really lovely.

I sat down and found my way around World Machine in a day or so (just getting
started) so I find that very intuitive despite the kind of throwback PC style
menus, and the output looks very good - mind you it does not boast a renderer,
so stuff needs to be exported and rendered elsewhere, so not a direct
competitor to Terragen in that respect. I have yet to check out how to create
terrain in Terragen.

Cheers
Morten

2016-05-18 Thread kla...@bluewin.ch
Hi Morten

I recently got back into Terragen.
The render quality is very nice, node based, and seems to handle a lot of
formats quite well.
The Pro Version with Animation module comes with 5 Rendernodes.
Pricing for Pre-Order V3 with maintanence (which includes free update to V4
when it comes out) is $700 / 680 Euro.
At www.terragen4.com you can see some examples of what is to come.
Can`t give you real production value advice but planetside.co.uk is going to
release version 4 by the end of June as they say.
If you go to their forum you could get in touch with the developers easily.
They are around quite frequently over their.
Together with World Machine it makes a very good combo.

If you already made up your mind, nevermind ;)
cheers, Klaus

Thanks again for all the good advice. World Machine and GeoGlyph it is then -
GeoGlyph looks awesome.

And I hear you Jordi regarding huge datasets and all that - I have been
creating terrain stuff manually adding some Mudbox here and there up until now,
but we would like to take things up a step or two and by the looks of it, WM

Re: Google Earth Pro 3D data or similar? edit -> Terrain Generators Q?

2016-05-18 Thread Jordi Bares
I am afraid it is very ad-hoc altogether, a combination of World Machine, Vue,
Zbrush and some clever tricks is simply critical if you want to do
sophisticated terrains and there is close to no literature on the subject.

I did a job recently with 6km by 6km Swiss range of mountains (pretty amazing)
and resolution to 1m that we did some extra resampling to go down every further
and the datasets are so huge it is scary.

Looked great, happy with the results, the process without the help of an expert
would have been a total nightmare so it is on my to-do list of course but
believe me when I say you are going to spend a ton of time finding out things,
from formats to workflows…

Along slightly different lines but related, what do you guys prefer to

buy global mapper for sure! although it's better if you have a budget for
the premium satellite imagery (the free stuff is ok in continental USA, but
globally not so hot)

also buy this tutorial from Gnomon
https://www.thegnomonworkshop.com/tutorials/creating-terrains-with-satellite
-data-volume-1

really good sections on using global mapper and getting elevation data and
imagery to line up

finally screw google, we spent months trying to buy imagery from them and
they just don't know how to deal with 'customers'

there are also independent satellite imaging companies, that often supply
their data for use in google maps/earth, so if you are well funded, you
could approach them directly

Hi,

I have tried a few times and failed trying to get anything from Google
Earth. I used public DEM/GeoTIFF data last time I had to do something like
that. Depending where you are flying over there are also some good national
databases out there.

You have stuff like http://aescripts.com/geolayers/ and there is at least
one 3dsmax plugin also.

http://www.bluemarblegeo.com/products/global-mapper.php is a good low-cost
product for dealing with this sort of data and converting various GeoTIFF
projections for example.

Best of luck.

Fabian

can do my stuff in XSI, not just render a movie out from GEP.

Google are not very helpful concerning how to contact them, so I thought
someone here surely had to do something similar at some point.

Has anybody here succeeded in getting said Google Data or gone with a DM
data and sattelite imagery provider?

Any hints will be most welcome.

Thanks

Google Earth Pro 3D data or similar?

2016-05-13 Thread Morten Bartholdy
I need to create a flyover of parts of Europe which is supposed to look very
much like in Google Earth, but with added bits and pieces I need to create. I
took a look at Google Earth Pro which pretty much provides the type of imagery
I need, but I want to get my hands on the 3D data with textures so I can do my
stuff in XSI, not just render a movie out from GEP.

Google are not very helpful concerning how to contact them, so I thought
someone here surely had to do something similar at some point.

Has anybody here succeeded in getting said Google Data or gone with a DM data
and sattelite imagery provider?

Any hints will be most welcome.
