Re: [Spooks] Yosemite Sam.
Visit http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/spooks to unsubscribe from this list My theory was that it was some sort of government experiment of a new digital transmission mode. I wasn't able to record any of it but the transmissions included an 800 ms data burst of some sort. In support of this idea, several radio amateurs filed complaints with the FCC because one of the frequencies used was in a ham band. The FCC took no action. And some people DF'ed the signals to be possibly from a government owned site in the desert near Albuquerque, NM. Guess we'll never know for sure. It hasn't returned to the airwaves since then. 73, Zack W9SZ On Mon, Jan 31, 2011 at 7:26 PM, Richard wrote: > Visit http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/spooks to unsubscribe from this > list > > Now that brings back memories, I wonder if anyone ever came up with a theory > as > to what that was?? [Spooks] Yosemite Sam and 4096 beacons
Visit http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/spooks to unsubscribe from this list I've been listening on the frequencies Yosemite Sam occupied a year ago and haven't heard a peep. Just wondered if anyone else was doing so and if you heard anything. Also, I've been listening for the cluster of mystery beacons in the southwest USA desert around 4096 kHz. Generally they haven't been as noticeable this winter as they were last year, but I did hear the Morse "I" and the long dashes the other morning. It seems they do best here just before local sunrise and go in and out of the noise. Since the winter has become very warm and we've actually had some thunderstorms here in the last couple weeks, noise levels are higher than in the typical winter. Visit http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/spooks to unsubscribe from this list I guess it was about this time last year, wasn't it? I forget the frequencies - my memory tells me 3700, 4300, 6900 and 10500. Is that correct? [Spooks] Yosemite Sam- Heard on the East Coast
Visit http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/spooks to unsubscribe from this list Hello Spooks, Most of Sam's loggings have come from the Land of the Road Runner and Wile E., but it is possible to hear Yosemite Sam in New Enlgand. I started hearing him this evening at 2330Z, and he's still going now as I write this (0029Z). Rig here is a Yaesu FRG-8800, antenna is an indoor long wire about 5 or 6 meters long, a modest setup so it is possible after dark. I have only heard him on 10500, nothing on the other frequencies, not even, "Catch the wabbit." 73, Dan Malloy __ Spooks mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/spooks Help: http://mailman.qth.net/faq.htm Post: mailto:Spooks@mailman.qth.net - Visit http://www.spynumbers.com/ for complete information about Spy Numbers Stations
[Spooks] Yosemite Sam. . .might as well add my theory
Visit http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/spooks to unsubscribe from this list Well, I might as well add in my opinion/theory. I think it's probably a test for later messages. They could be using the YS voice as a known quantity that they could compare to a single "control" recording. A voice test would be better in some cases than a certain tone, because if the reciever is a person, it would be good to make sure the voice is understandable. Think of it this way. The controls are set, the message is sent on a certain frequency in certain conditions. The quality of the result it recorded. The settings of the controls are changed slightly. The process is then repeated. After a while, they could find the ideal settings to get a message from a certain location to a certain location, in certain conditions, in a certain format. Just a theory. [Spooks] Yosemite Sam..
Visit http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/spooks to unsubscribe from this list I still copy "Sam" at about S1-S2 here in the Niagara area on 3700 and 6500, very light on 10500Khz late afternoon to late evening Additionally, if in fact the originator (Perpetrator?)is enjoying a cocktail after the fact, I would suggest a heavy dose of Mellaril would be more appropiate than alcohol. Technical expertise and radio savvy notwithstanding, if this person gets his/her kicks this way as you theorize, I think he/she needs a little "help" Kurt! Your QRZ bio sounds like you're the guy to ask about the infamous Area 51!!??!! Visit http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/spooks to unsubscribe from this list "A very significant observation. Sounds like Sam has a single transmitter with automatic QSY every 10 seconds. Has anyone else noticed that you can hear Sam on both upper and lower sidebands, similar to an AM emission, but that there is no carrier in the center? (That is, the emission looks like double-sideband suppressed carrier, an unusual mode.) I missed it if someone else has already mentioned this. ... MartinVE3OAT" He's very light here in the Niagara Peninsula about 30kms west of Niagara Falls.(3700 and 6500) I did notice the double sideband carrier nature of the transmission. Additionally I cant imagine anyone postulating that this could be a "drunken ham" Richard. [Spooks] Yosemite Sam is Back...on WWV!
Visit http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/spooks to unsubscribe from this list Yosemite Sam is Back on WWV! I got him on 10MHz at 1549 and 1550z 20050115. This time it is just the buzz and "Varmint" Here are the clips: http://www.open.org/rumcd/sam/sam 1549.mp3 http://www.open.org/rumcd/sam/sam 1550.mp3 These were during the quiet ticks not during the tone modulated portion of the broadcast so they are easy to hear. Strange! Too bad condx are so bad or I would have tried the other WWV freqs. -Fibber __ Spooks mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/spooks Help: http://mailman.qth.net/faq.htm Post: mailto:Spooks@mailman.qth.net - Visit http://www.spynumbers.com/ for complete information about Spy Numbers Stations
