LMS displays the art from its artwork cache which is the same cover that
it uses for its album list.
At play time it reads the database to find the image within the cache
store. Have a look at the database.
As I said earlier my understanding remains that the scanner uses the
first piece of embedded artwork it finds but in the event there is none
then drops to folder.jpg or cover.jpg - I don’t know the precedence of
the latter.
If you look at More / Local Artwork you’ll see the cached versions
stored for display use.
Part of the scan process is the creation of the artwork cache

As far as I can see, when playing an audio file the cover art shown
defaults to the one that is embedded in the audio file. When browsing
albums in the default GUI - I suppose Material may follow a different
scheme - it favours a separate image file in the folder with a
preference for `folder.jpg` or `cover.jpg`. In past time I found the
mechanism to be somewhat unpredictable, probably because at the time I
did not obey this name preference, and as I never browse additional art
(i.e. booklets) from the LMS GUI but do like to include them on the disk
I have since always archived them in either .pdf or .cbr format which
the scanner does not handle.

Thanks for this. A quick google search tells me that iTunes can use
cover.jpg in a folder for album art which I also need (for an aging iPod
I use as a media device in my Ram truck).

So I've a project before me!

Embedded cover art in files is an MP3 thing in the main. If you don’t
use your music in anything other than LMS there is no reason to bloat
your files with cover art - just use a single decent folder.jpg or
cover.jpg in the album folder. LMS creates various sized versions in any
case for where it needs them and stores them in the cache for easy quick
retrieval.
Most decent rippers can be configured to do this.

Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] Maximum file size for cover art?

2022-03-04 Thread gstalnaker

This thread has been an eye-opener!

One of my personal joys is creating cover art for recordings (vinyl I've
digitized, etc.). I've done this for years, and developed an SOP for
sizing, quality, etc. I usually use GIMP for this work and have usually
created images 1425x1425, at 300 dpi, which is the size that translates
best for PRINTING cover art for a CD insert.

When I started using LMS, I KEPT this formatting/sizing and for years
I've been embedding cover art in mp3/flac files using mp3tag that were
created using that sizing and DPI. These files are rarely ginormous, but
in the past month I've noticed that files I know have cover art embedded
in them do not display that cover art in LMS. Started looking at the
logs and saw errors related to "exceeded file size limits." So, just
recently I've been playing with modifying my SOP to created files at
600x600 300 dpi, or 1425x1425 at 100 dpi. The first are slightly
smaller, but the later are easier to add text to.

And now this thread!!

I have not previously put a cover.jpg file in the folder with the music
files. Should I? Is there a scanning/LMS advantage to doing this and
removing cover art from the music files?

I ask because I have an 80,000+ music library and changes that make
scanning more efficient are welcome.

Thanks.

Recently I experienced display problems with cover art embedded in the
files of the playlists.
Their size was 500 x 500, and after some tedious work changing all of
them to 300 x 300 the problems are gone.

I may be wrong but I’m pretty sure that LMS uses cover art in the
following order.
First music file in a folder with embedded art then folder.jpg,
cover.jpg etc
If your embedded file was 300x300 it would use that rather than the
800x800 image which is then arguably a bit redundant.
As I don’t use my Flacs with anything other than LMS I try not to embed
images at all but use 800x800 folder.jpg

Thanks for that reality check. That makes a lot of sense, and a lot more
sense than keeping old graphics files from the days before I used LMS
and wasn't concerned about viewing them anywhere but on the desktop
where my music library was stored in those days. The problem here is
entirely user-generated, like problems with outdated and incompatible
metadata tags. In recent years, I have gone through my collection,
attempting to get all the tags in order, and on another occasion, trying
to correct problems with displayed cover art.

Now it's time to deal with the other graphics files in the folders. Not
the cover art, but images that can be displayed through the "Local
artwork" link in "Song Info." (Is this link only available if you have
the Music and Artists Information plugin installed? I've been using MAI
so long, I don't remember.) These images can be much larger than
800x800, and sometimes greater detail is appropriate. But there is no
point in having files as large as the ones I mentioned earlier.

AFAIK there is no fixed limit, but as coverart is resized to match the
player's capabilities and I run LMS on a small CPU I make a habit of
reviewing the music files and resize the art to match the maximum
display size which is 300x300 for the image included in the music file
(used by the player) and 800x800 for the folder (used by the web GUI).

Correction to the above, I overlooked the following two lines in the
log, which seem to be associated with displaying the 147 MB png file:

I also tried to display a 20 MB jpg file with the absurd dimensions
18150x3630. It was slow to display and while processing it LMS stopped
responding to input. Material skin reported that it had lost contact
with the server. But there were no errors in the log. When LMS finally
responded to input again, The "now playing" marker had moved to the end

Done, but no luck. I found a 7360x3682 png file, 147 MB, which should
qualify as insanely large. LMS loaded it, slowly, and displayed it
without any obvious distress. Nothing in the log. If any logging changes
would help, I'll be happy to try again.

Whatever caused large images to crash LMS in the past, as I have
experienced, it must have been filed. I'm running today's build of 8.3.

These are images in a music folder, displayed through the Local artwork
link in Song Info. Bob is talking about images embedded in music files,
so there are differences.

For system with limited resources there is the option for MySB to do the
resizing - WebUI Settings/Advanced/Performance/Artwork resizing -
however the artwork first has to be extracted so it will still have some
resource hit.

LMS uses a perl module (Image::Scale) to resize images (which in turn
uses libraries like libpng and libjpeg to handle image formats).
This module holds the uncompressed image in memory (for a 7500*7500
image, this needs ~160MB), in addition to the compressed one, plus
memory for the output image.
Additionally, for reading the image, another buffer the size of the
uncompressed image is allocated.

I suspect that somewhere during that processing LMS runs out of memory.

I have no idea why anyone would think embedding a 5.8Mb png in an audio
file would be a good idea! I didn't put it there, I always add cover art
as cover.jpg in the album folder.

I think it would be pretty easy to sort this out globally across a music
library using an app such as Bliss, but even then it would be useful to
know the upper limit (and whether that is dependent on the specs of the
server).

I am very interested in this issue, as well. I have some insanely large
graphics files accompanying some albums, Occasionally, trying to view
one of those files from the Local Artwork link in song info will crash
LMS. Obviously the solution is to get rid of any insanely large graphics
files, but it would be nice to have some sense of where the line is
between rather large and insanely large.

[SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] Maximum file size for cover art?

2022-02-26 Thread Grumpy Bob

I've been tinkering with a tiny server for travelling, based on a Pi
Zero2 and a 2Tb SSD drive. It works pretty well, but lately the scans
have choked while pre-caching artwork.
I examined the scanner.log and identified a recently added music file
with a very large embedded artwork file. I exported the file and found
it was a 5.8Mb png file. Once I removed the embedded image, the scans
complete without problem.

This got me wondering - what is the biggest cover art file size that LMS
can deal with, and does it depend on the specs of the computer it's
running on? 5.8Mb is stupidly large (it was 7500x7500 pixels), and I
can't understand why anyone would embed an image that large! I routinely
check file tags before adding files to my library, and was just
wondering what size limit I should look out for.
