Re: elevated plywood
Jon, list: As some of you are painfully aware, I too have been battling indecision on a variety of aspects of my elevated layout. While lately I have been obsessing about the use of Simpson connectors for 4x4s on the patio, I spent a bit of time over the last few months finding some stuff out. One of the first things that I encountered was the fact that marine plywood -- a common suggestion among those of whom I've badgered on the topic, both inside and outside the hobby, turns out to be expensive as hell (Jon found this out too). But I was turned on to something that is supposed to be almost as good at a much lesser price (though still twice what you'd pay for regular 4-ply fir): MDO. MDO stands for medium density overlay and it has just that -- an overlay of a chemically-treated paper on the outside of the multi-ply wood product. It is used mostly in sign-making (apparently all those real estate for sale signs you see are made with it) since it takes paint so well and in some concrete form-making applications where a smooth concrete wall is desired. My research indicates that a standard 4-ply piece of 3/4-inch, 4x8 fir plywood should retail for about $22; that same piece of plywood that's been pressure-treated (probably the minimum of what you'd want to do) would be about $41 and the MDO would be $55. The problem with MDO is that it is not a stock item (try asking for it at Home Depot and watch the puzzled looks you get) and you'll probably have to get it special ordered. (Personal aside to Jon: if you decide upon MDO, let us talk about ordering together.) Now, what to cover it with? The aesthetics police here have vetoed shingles or roofing material. I was reading STEAM IN THE GARDEN a few weeks back when I encountered an article by one James Crabb of Houston -- hey, he's on this list! -- indicating that a member of the Houston Live Steamers had built an elevated plywood layout and covered it with the same material that's used for pickup truck bed liner. The Houston Live Steamer in question is Steve Speck -- hey, he's on this list! -- and he and I exchanged a couple of e-mails and he sent me some pictures of his truck-bed-liner-covered track. I have taken the liberty of posting those at http://www.45mm.com/sslivesteam/files/mvc-006f1.jpg http://www.45mm.com/sslivesteam/files/mvc-008f.jpg While Steve had his material applied by a local dealer, I was interested in applying this material myself, which sent me on a quest to determine the best supplier of a similar material. While I may not have achieved that specific goal, I did find material that meets the aesthetics required (it comes in a gray color that's been approved) and, according to the manufacturer, will work just fine in this application (they even answered the what if I pour alcohol on it and then I light it? question without blinking). I'm reluctant to make a general recommendation of this supplier, as all I know about them is that they have a product and they answer their e-mail. And while I have no actual experience with this combination, everyone with whom I've spoken seems to think that this setup will be impervious to most any elemental problem thrown at it. \dmc -- *+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+ David M. All hands: It's been quite a while since I updated the roster (see http://45mm.com/sslivesteam/users/). We have 150 people on the listserv now; of course, not all are on the roster. If you aren't listed on the roster and would like to be, send me e-mail with your full name as you wish to be listed and your city, state and country. If you have provided a biography to the list and there isn't a link, please find your biography at http://www.mail-archive.com/sslivesteam%40colegroup.com/ and send me the link. If you haven't provided a biography, please put one together to introduce yourself to your fellow list members. Mug shots are always welcome -- send them directly to me. autocad files ...
all hands: as i have said in the past about pictures, i am happy to post autocad files to the server for downloading by the group. if you are interested in jim curry's "weekend project" axle-pump drawing, it is available here: http://45mm.com/sslivesteam/files/aweekendproject.dwg.zip for those who do not have autocad but would still like to download and print jim's drawings, you need to have windows (blech) 98, nt or 2000, internet explorer 5.1 or greater, stuffit expander and autodesk's volo view express plug-in. if you need the first two, you're on your own. to get the latest stuffit expander (freeware), point your browser at http://www.aladdinsys.com/downloads/ (i had to upgrade my copy of expander and found that the aladdin ftp site worked better than the http download.) to get volo view express (freeware), point your browser at http://www3.autodesk.com/adsk/section/0,,163255-123112,00.html warning: volo view express is a 20 megabyte download and will probably take about half an hour with a regular modem. once you've installed these two applications, you can double-click on the "aweekendproject.dwg.zip" file and it will decompress. then double-click on the "aweekendproject" file (it has a red icon) and volo view express will launch and display the drawing. for those who would find this too complicated, unfortunately the drawing is awfully complex and requires more than just a "screen shot." if there is a lot of interest in getting a jpeg of this, i could piece one together, but it would take me some time, which i don't want to invest unless there is interest. whew. \dmc ^^^ Dave Cole Gen'l Sup't: Grand Teton Everglades Steam Excursion Co. National Summer Steamup -- July 27-29, 2001
PRESS RELEASE For more information, contact PCLS at (916) 447-5433. January 2, 2001 SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- The Pacific Coast Live Steamers, a loosely organized group of practitioners of the art of small-scale live steam train operation, has announced that the National Summer Steamup will be July 27-29, 2001 in Sacramento, Calif. Small scale live steam engines are modeled in scales from 1:13 to 1:32 and run on tracks that are either 32mm or 45mm wide. They are propelled by steam generated in small, safe boilers, using butane, alcohol or coal for heat. Called the "Sacramento 49er Special," the cost of attending the event will be $49 and the room rate at the hotel will be $49 a night, including continental breakfast. The National Summer Steamup will be held at the Canterbury Inn in Sacramento, which can be contacted by voice at (916) 927-0927 or by fax at (916) 641-8594. The hotel is located at 900 Canterbury Road. Room registrations are separate from event registration. Featuring three live steam tracks -- a newly built 110-foot portable track with 10-foot radius curves and one 45mm track and one 45mm and 32mm dual-gauged track, a second 50-foot dual-gauged track with eight-foot curves and a 50-foot 32mm track -- the steamup will include workshops, visits to the nearby California State Railroad Museum, optional trips on local prototypical steam railways as well as a Saturday night pool-side barbeque. This event replaces the National Spring Steamup organized over the last six years by Richard Finlayson. At last year's event, Finlayson -- a San Jose, Calif., hobbyist, supplier and the web master of STEAM IN THE GARDEN magazine's web site -- passed the responsibility for organizing a West Coast steamup to the PCLS group, of which is he a founder. The general superintendent of the event is Kevin O'Connor, a longtime small scale live steam hobbyist who is based in Sacramento and considered a top authority on the hobby. I for one like that feature. If for no other reason than that, this is a good list to have as well as ssls. just my humble opinion. OK, so this starts me thinking ... There are three reasons I have chosen to prevent attachments to be sent to the list: *The belief that most people have a low-bandwidth connection and may wish to download the picture later (when rates are lower or they may just have more time to download large files). *The belief that as a list member, you should have the right to control what large files you receive. If everyone can post to the list, then the poster controls what you download, not the receiver. *Attachments really trash digests. Specifically, the "no attachments" rule prevents HTML-encoded e-mail from being distributed on the list and HTML-encoded messages in a digest are horrible. A corollary to this is that HTML-encoded e-mail makes the archives look bad too. Now, I am not going to take an offical vote here or anything (insert recount joke here), but if I get a sense that the list wishes to allow attachments, I will reconsider that ban. \dmc ^^^ Dave Cole Gen'l Sup't: Grand Teton Everglades Steam Excursion Co. OT: AOL users beware
All hands: If you are not a user of AOL or don't anticipate using your AOL account to post messages to the SSLIVESTEAM list, then you can quietly kit the DELETE key and move on. For those of you who *are* users of AOL and wish to post messages to the list, we have some mixed blessings. AOL has decided, in its infinite wisdom, to include HTML-encoded e-mail as the standard transmission method in its new version, 6.0. From some research done by Keith Taylor (thanks, Keith), which I have confirmed elsewhere, it appears that HTML-encoded e-mail is not an option (as it is with Microsoft Outlook or Netscape Communicator), but is the only way mail is sent. There is no option for "plain text" messages in AOL 6. For list posters, the problem is that our list server treats HTML-encoded e-mail as though it were an attachment, and because we have so many computer neophytes on the list, I have it set so that nobody can accidentially send a 3 megabyte attached picture that maybe you don't want (or that might clog your modem for two hours or thereabouts). So, with the list software set up so that you are unable to send attachments and HTML-encoded e-mail by default being an attachment, people who upgrade to AOL 6 will not be able to post to the list. (Just ask Keith.) Now that I've outlined the problem, here are three solutions, two that I know will work and one that I think will work: *Don't upgrade to AOL 6. I can't speak to what features you might be missing, but it is certainly an option. *Get an e-mail address at one of the "free" e-mail services such as Hotmail.com or Yahoo.com, ask me to move your account to the new service and use your browser to access the list and post replies via one of these services. *Here's the one I'm not sure about, but you *should* be able to access your AOL e-mail on your AOL browser. I just tried it with the version on my machine -- 4.0 for Macintosh -- and it had a security problem because of an "expired certificate," but I suspect that a new version of the AOL browser wouldn't have that problem. So, you could monitor the list with AOL 6 as normally, but when you wanted to post, you'd have to go to the browser, visit the www.aol.com web site, put in your user and password and then use the browser to post a message. Whew. Anyway, if this confuses the hell out of you, I'm sorry. Sometimes technology companies make unilateral decisions without thinking them through, impacting a significant portion of their users; this appears to be one of those situations. Personal mail to me if you want to discuss this, as it is definitely not about steam trains, small-scale or not. \dmc ^^^ Dave Cole Gen'l Sup't: Grand Teton Everglades Steam Excursion Co. Whistle while you work
Gang: At the Truckee Railroad Days in early September the BAGRS Live Steam group (Harlan Barr) set up the oval and there were a couple of days of nice steaming. A fellow contacted the club and asked if he could bring his Aster Light Mikado to run -- he had built it from a kit and never run it before. For personal reasons, he had to liquidate it and wanted to run it once before he sold it. This fellow -- his name is Lon Brunken -- was running the Mikado when I arrived at the oval and it wasn't running well. After fiddling with it, though, he got it going and it made some nice laps on the oval. While Brunken was following it on one lap, he reached into the cab and out came the greatest whistle sound I had ever heard on a small-scale live steamer. Brunken said that he had made the whistle himself and it was really quite easy. If he were interested in making more, Harlan and I said, we thought we knew one or two other people who might like a good whistle. Earlier this week Brunken posted a note in the "swap shop" section of the Steam in the Garden web site http://www.steamup.com/ saying that he is now taking whistle orders. I am not affiliated with Brunken and until Sept. 9 hadn't ever met him. But I think we should all contact him and get him to build us whistles while he's in the mood. You can reach him at mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]. \dmc PS: He says he doesn't have whistle valves -- a significant missing component. How wide should I make the right-of-way?
Folks: Well, we're beginning the preliminary plan stages in the construction of the Grand Teton Everglades. The live steam layout will be an integral part of a new 20-foot-by-20-foot deck, which, including space in the backyard, should give us about 200 feet of track in a modified dogbone, with eight-foot radius curves (in the event somebody wants to run someting big -- at least bigger than the Ruby or the Cricket or the Frank). But I was thinking today: what about expansion (you always have to plan for expansion even if it doesn't ever happen)? I think I'd like to run a second set of tracks *inside* the dogbone. The question becomes, how wide of a space will I need for four 45mm tracks? Obviously even I can do the arithmetic on how much space the track will take, but how much side-bearings should I give each track? In other words, how wide should I make the right-of-way when there are four tracks, side-by-side? Your thoughts are appreciated. \dmc ^^^ Dave Cole General Manager: Grand Teton Everglades Steam Excursion Co. Pacifica, Calif. OT: Re: Steamup timing WAS Re: PCLS web site up ...
Richard: I think you have accurately outlined the situation from your perspective -- these are all valid points. Since Kevin doesn't believe this Internet thing is going to catch on, allow me to attempt to summarize his thoughts (fyi, don't shoot the messenger here; I don't necessarily agree with Kevin but I am trying to get his points across, as I think they are valid too): *We know that what a hotel charges for a ballroom in the S.F. Bay Area is outrageous, yet we want the venue to be in a hotel, so that people can easily access the tracks night and day. *In the May timeframe, it's difficult in general to find a hotel willing to turn over a ballroom to a bunch of steam freaks; they can get more money from a big wedding. So even when a hotel is found willing to host the event, it usually wants the group out ASAP. *Under the assumption that things are cheaper the further you are from the S.F. Bay Area, Kevin sought out prices at Sacramento hotels (he lives in Sacramento). His findings were that hotels in the state capitol have a premium on their ballroom facilities 10 months of the year. Those lobbyists are buttering up your legislators (and mine) with fine parties most every weekend and the hotel not only makes money on renting the room, it makes money on the catering. Lastly, believe it or not, hotel ballrooms in Sacramento are *more expensive* than in the Bay Area because of the high demand for such facilities. *But, the legislature takes a summer vacation in July and August. Therefore, Kevin started talking to hotels about a July date. He says he has found a hotel in Sacramento that will offer its "conference center" (one large room and two smaller ones) for free as long as the group guarantees at least 150 room-nights (that would be 50 people staying three nights or 75 people staying two nights or some mixture thereof). In addition this hotel -- which Kevin describes as clean but a little shopworn around the edges -- will charge $49 a night for rooms. This reasoning leads Kevin to believe that a July date would be good. If I have characterized Kevin's statements in any way incorrectly, I would appreciate someone setting it straight. I should point out that as Kevin made these arguments, no one brought up most of the issues you have raised in your note. \dmc PS: Though this topic is a little far afield for this list, I think many will find it interesting. Newie needs steam oil
Gang: Over on the www.steamup.com mesage board I found this yesterday: i need steam oil fast for my ruby please e-mail me back I sent him the sulphur springs aol address, but assuming he wanted to run his Ruby *right now* (can't imagine that -- mine sat in the box seven, maybe eight hours after it arrived), I asked him to join the list and post his plea (with an address) here. Long story short, he's a newbie with e-mail too, so I found out that he lives in Clifton Park, NY 12065. OT: Plastic lumber
Folks: We're in the midst of planning our new deck here at the Grand Teton Everglades Steam Excursion Co. For those of you unversed in weather here in Pacifica, it is almost year-round fog-bound. So the deck will have to withstand quite a bit of moisture. Further, I prefer running steamers to doing maintenance on a deck. These two factors have lead us to plastic lumber (see http://www.plasticlumberyard.com or http://www.usplasticlumber.com/). Has anyone worked with this stuff? It appears that the Phoenix stuff is better than the SmartDeck stuff (because it can be used for load-bearing support), but maybe I'm missing something here. Housekeeping notes
All hands: Well, we've finally gotten the servers relocated to their semi-permanent location and got them running properly (two different efforts). If you have any problems with your sslivesteam account, please send me e-mail mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]. I've instituted a new feature: if you want to make your account inactive for a while (like you're going on vacation or into the hospital or something that would keep you from your computer and you don't want messages piling up), please send e-mail to: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]. When you come back, merely send an e-mail to mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] and you'll be back in business. This keeps me out of the loop. I have created a new roster as well; you can see it at http://45mm.com/sslivesteam/users/. Please check to see if your name is properly listed (or listed at all) and whether your bio or picture is correct. Again, a note to me for changes is appropriate. Live steam track at BTS
All hands: Here's the message that started this thread ... Bob Starr just sent this to me. It confirms what I thought to be the case. No club or group is willing to take over the live steam track at the Big Train Show. Bob talks about the Riverside Live Steamers but he fails mention that they run 1.5 scale ride on size steam engines. I too am a member of the Riverside Club but I just don't see the membership taking this on. What a sad state of affairs. Kevin O'Connor, do you think the PCLS would like to hop on this opportunity? Also, I use those barbeque fire-starters from Scripto. The process I use is to open the gas valve, click the fire-starter a couple of times until it lights, get a flame going in the smoke stack and then back off the gas until it "pops down" into the burner. Once it's going, I open up the gas again all the way, to get the maximum heat until I've got steam up. Then I back the gas back down to the point where it is just on "simmer." At 1:24 PM -0800 3/26/00, TrotFox wrote: I can't seem to keep the fire burning. Is this the reason everyone's saying the Ruby needs a #3 jet? If so, where do I get one? Landon: From your descriptions, it sounds like you've got fuel and fuel pressure. What could be causing your burner to flame-out? First, I would make certain that it is really lighting -- can you see the flame in the burner? You may be in a position where you just think it's lighting. The sound of a butane burner is a hollow small roar. The sound of escaping butane is more like the whistle you describe. As Phil has suggested, next I would look at the jet -- not to replace it, but to make certain it isn't clogged. There is a bit of discussion in the Aster catalog/manual about using a thin wire to clear a clogged jet, but my theory is that the wire can do more damage than good. I take the jet, turn it around, put it between my lips and blow. I've unclogged my Frank S jet a couple of times using this procedure. Another potential problem may be that you are opening the gas valve too quickly after the burner is lit. You could be blowing out the flame. Lastly, I don't personally light any of my engines through the smokebox door -- always from the top of the flue. Also, I use those barbeque fire-starters from Scripto. She is of the opinion that if I -- forgive the term -- blow off some steam in the workshop or out on the track, then I will be a better pseudo-spouse. I would frame the proposition in this manner: do you want me to be a happier, better life-mate? If so, then please don't protest when I want to spend umpty-ump thousand dollars on an Aster Mike. Of course, if she delivered the engine, you would then have to deliver the happier, better spouse. Unknow if that's possible ... ;-) ... And, if that doesn't work, have her exercise some of her CPA skills and find out the relative value of live steamers. Not to mention the difference in cost between a kit and the price fetched by a slightly used live steamer. I think you would have a valid argument that the investment in the kit would never disappear and that you would always be able to sell a built live steamer for more than you paid for the kit, unless you broke it or ran it into the ground.
