Re: Paso Robles Track

2004-06-10 Thread Robb and Cheryl
I am behind on reading my email.
On the track damage in transport issue I borrowed from my days in N-trak
and use a 12 section of track at the table joints. This keeps the end
of the flex track back from the edge. I have had no damage to the end of
the track. My track has 2 meter radius curves and set up measures 15' X
25'. Each curve is made up of three pieces 10 wide with an eight foot
straight section in the middle that is 2' wide. For transport I bolt
two sections track to track. It fits in a full size pickup or small
trailer. I can set it up in one hour.

steam in West Michigan let me know.

2004-06-10 Thread Robb and Cheryl
Below is the reply I got from Tom M (Steam Tom 1)
The baggage car is metal, with the name David J. Parkins on the bottom.
It was originally green, in Southern livery. I bought it about three
years ago at DH from Bob Moser.

The other two coaches, one third class, and one autocoach, are Tenmille
kits, assembled for me by Barry Harper. Barry also painted the baggage
car in cream and brown Great Western livery. I usually run the train
behind my Great Western Pannier.

Last June at your house that was the only British train I had to run
behind either my Scotsman or my Schools. I have since corrected that
problem.

You should be able to get ones with damaged superstructure free. To
them they are scrap. A course of anger to customers. Do them a favor,
save them having to pay to have them removed by the refuse people.

Our club had to scrap our portable aluminum track system because of
transportation damage that always occurred to track. I noticed, with envy,
the Portland O Gaugers club uses a trailer with racks to prevent modules
from contacting each other. Does the Paso Robles Track have a
transportation system that minimizes damage?

ah, were it only so.
in prioritizing the work that needs to be done, we are first trying
to get the track usable for the national summer steamup
(http://www.summersteamup.com/) in sacramento, july 22-25. up until a
few months ago, the paso robles track was stored underneath someone's
house ... it needs lots of different things done to it and we've only
just begun.

suffice it to say, the project turned out to be a lot more work than
we had anticipated.

we were able to buy a trailer -- it's a big one -- and our goal is to
build carts that will transport not only the paso robles track but
also the pcls track. before the paso robles track came on the market,
we were going to build carts for the pcls track this spring; instead
we're working on the paso robles track.

once we have a cart system together, we'll be hauling the tracks
around for more use than just four days every summer.

I used Nickel Silver rail, but you could use Stainless Steel, it is tough. I
put 1/2 high legs on the bottom of each section and had upright posts to
contain the stack of modules.
The track traveled many thousands of miles and never had a bit of damage.

Dave's message got deleted before I had a chance to reply. If you haven't
done so, look at some of the lumber carts that Home Depot uses. They have a
set of wheels in the center of the long side, and a smaller swivel wheel in
the center of the ends. Makes for a very easy to maneuver cart. Be sure to
make some sort of shim to place under the end wheels so the cart can be
secured for transport without making it a veritable 'camelback.'
Keep your steam up!

Re[2]: Paso Robles Track

2004-06-05 Thread Bert Edmunda

Hello Dave
I see you are in the throws of preparing your track for a
steam up We use modules of 1.2m x 0.6m about 4ft by 2ft. They have a
2x1 wooden frame and the top is a laminate which is oil and water
resistant. This material is usually used to protect chip board in
transit at the top and bottom of the pack therefor it is usually free
from timber importers etc. We use one folding leg at one end only they
are usually found under party tables. Here again the renters often have
to scrap tables and the legs of metal are also more often than not recycled
free The modules are bolted together with coach bolts and wing nuts.
After building the units to a square there are two corners without support
We simply put 2 leg sets under these ends. The track is laid on the
tables the heating up area is on a metal stairway grid 4ft x 2ft
module naturally which allows water to drop thro into a drip tray. There
is also a large mirror underneath which can be brought into position
for alco. firing systems so that they can keep an eye on thing from above.
All the modules are moved on a recycled Supermarket hardware dept.
trolly and the whole thing (36 modules usually) can be ready to run
within 45 minutes. Dismantling takes the same time a quick rub with
a cloth and it clean enough to store away without further cleaning.

I don't know if this is any help, but it is easy to transport in a car
with fold down seats and the 3m long track we use goes up on the roof
tied to timbers. Thats it Cheap, easy, fast, one man can do it. I have
detail photos.

it's always helpful to hear what other folks are doing ... with the
paso robles track we are starting with something another group built,
so we are having to improve upon their engineering.

again, our goal in the next few weeks is to make the track
steamable ... next fall we'll start working on longterm fixes in
addition to carts.

thanks.

ps: walt -- the home depot carts are a good idea ... i wonder if they
sell used ones? ...

those were the basis for what we call the pcls track. you wouldn't
recognize your frames, but they are in there somewhere ...

you can see pictures of it on mike martin's web site

it's the track that has the camouflage paint job on the deck (thank
