RE: Accucraft Excelsior R/C
Thanks, a completely different approach. I will examine that concept tonight. You called it a steam stop valve which might explain how sensitive it was to just the slightest change. Sincerely Steve Ciambrone Sr. Test Engineer L-3 Ocean Systems Dunno what the hash is Steve but Excelsior is controlled with a single servo for speed AND direction, the original 'throttle being used as just a 'steam stop valve'. It works in the same way as single channel Pearse locos and the reversing piston valve below the smoke box is actually a reverser regulator. You need to remove the reversing gate, fit a servo in the sidetank and make up a linkage using partly the reversing linkage already in place Yours Aye Tag Gorton Longlands & Western Railway Trematon office Cornwall

RE: Accucraft Excelsior
Bought an Excelsior today. It has some differences over the Ruby. The Excelsior has a water drain on the displacement lubricator, water fill is in the cab, water overflow valve for boiler water level, knob on the throttle, small lever on the burner control and a R/C switch cutout in the rear tank. The cab roof slides off instead of the Ruby with the whole cab removable. Lots of comments on the 16mm list, it's been out for several months in the UK. Main complaints concern a loud burner, and somewhat anemic steaming performance until broken in. Ian pearse, the designer, has been providing free replacement burners to those who got locos from the first lot imported. Later engines are reputed to have the howling burner syndrome fixed. People who have run-in the loco for a decent period of time (8-10 hours), report themselves pleased with it. regards, pf

It will be available via Brandbright, PPS et al in the UK and I suspect will very shortly be available in the United States. At least I cannot see Ian Pearse taking up the opportunity to sell in the US. I have seen the pre-production models and this promises to be a very high quality model at the price. For instance the steam chests, in common with those on Pearse Locomotives, consist of stainless steel centerless ground piston valves running in honed bores. Despite old wives tales to the contrary, this arrangement will wear and wear given adequate lubrication. I will be reviewing the first of the production models as soon as Marches Models get their first consignment and will then be in a position to provide more info to members of this list. One of the reasons I keep a low profile on this list is that I have been too lazy to unsubscribe and subscribe again with my current isp. I will do this as soon as I get round to it :-) -- Yours Aye Tag Gorton Longlands & Western Railway Co Trematon Office ICQ* 96182312

Re: Accucraft EXCELSIOR on FSOL
Kevin, I haven't gotten around to it yet, but planned to make simple crosshead guides that are just short lengths of brass rod as the guides and a machined piece of brass that slips over the guides and replaces the rod end where it connects to the connecting rod. I agree with Vance, the use of a mill is a must for this project. Not only for getting the guides square and parallel, but also for precise location of the guide holes in crosshead. One possibility if you were absolutely set on trying it without a mill would be to build the crossheads first and then with the crossheads on the rods, transfer punch the guide locations into the back cylinder cover. Once the holes for the guides have been drilled/tapped and the guides put in place, they could be adjusted (bent is such an ugly word!) slightly to accomodate for any imperfections. The crosshead could have slightly more clearance than actually needed for the guides to allow for any alignment problems as well. Oversize holes shouldn't be a problem since the production models of Ruby do not have guides anyway. One problem that came up during my original contemplation of crosshead guides was that the newly machined guide would have to be very thin on the side near the frame so that it would clear the side rod pin on the driver. Don't know if every Ruby would be that close, but worth checking. Later, Trent
Re: Accucraft EXCELSIOR
Pete Not the same loco. The Accucraft model is of a 30" ga prototype ex-Bowaters Paper mill, tho it was a standard desogn and I believe 2' versions were made. The loco on the L&B was much smaller and is/was available as a live steam loco from Wrightscale. She was 2' gauge. A wing tank loco has a rectangular water tank either side of the smokebox which is separate from and a distance forward from the cab. Not to be confused with an inverted saddle tank loco!!! Re: Accucraft EXCELSIOR on FSOL
Kevin, I think it was Kevin O'Connor who added crosshead guides to his Ruby. I don't think it'll be too hard, provided you have access to a milling machine or an X-Y table on your drill press. Doing a plunge cut with an end-mill would be more accurate than with a twist drill, too. The main thing, of course, is to keep them parallel to each other and to the piston rod, so doing it by hand is out of the question. -vance-
Re: Accucraft EXCELSIOR on FSOL
Did you notice something on that version of the Ruby? Crosshead guides! I wonder if you can refit them to the older versions. I've been scratching my head trying to think of ways to add them to mine, but if all I have to do is order replacement parts, buddy I'm there! Later, K
