RE: [ANNOUNCE] Struts Console v4.0.3
I have taken out the rewrite attribute and replaced it with redirect=true. It doesn't seem to have had any impact on the application behaviour. the struts-logon.war with struts-config.xml file is probably incorrect. I have also checked the supported attributes for the forward element in the book I am using. The rewrite attribute is not included. Struts console plug-in - Bug - rewrite attribute
To whom it my concern, I was using the Struts console plug-in Eclipse with the Struts-logon application. the console gives the error message Invalid struts config File error on line 44:Attribute rewrite is not declared for element forward. James, XML comments can be preserved because in other XML tools they show up as nodes in the XML tree. I don't see why it matters which tag the comment may belong to because the comment can exist as a node apart from any other element. Struts-console 3.3 and tiles
A bug report for James and all who may be affected. In Struts-Console 3.3, when generating my tiles-defs.xml file. I had the following xml output: definition name=template.member1 path= extends=layouts.basiclayout note how there is a path= as well as an extends attribute of the definition. Desired behavior is to extend a definition but not have a path for this definition. The resulting problem occurs when trying to forward to that tile (Using 1.1rc1) java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: Path does not start with a / character at org.apache.catalina.core.ApplicationContext.getRequestDispatcher(ApplicationContext.java:590) Had to fix this by hand editing the xml and removing the path= attribute. Just thought you might like to know. -Dennis - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Struts CONSOLE some workaround
Hi, As per james instructions I was able to put in struts-console as plugin to my JDeveloper, but the problem is if u have already opend the struts-config.xml in ur project through normal XML Editor provided by JDeveloper, then struts console will not pick it there is a work around open your project file in text pad and look for struts-config.xml file the file is put as a value for xml tag Item class="oracle.bali.xml.addin.XMLSourceNode"struts-config.xml/Item change it to Item class="org.apache.struts.console.adapters.jdeveloper.StrutsConfigNode"struts-config.xml/Item Make sure u colose the project and restart JDeveloper, I tried just closing the project and reopening it, but it did not work (think that Jdev has some prepopulated objects and are not changed till u close it). Your struts console is available to use. RegardsChetan_ Each pattern describes the problems which occurs over and over again in our environment, and then describes the core of the solution of that problem, in such a way that you can use this solution a million times over, without ever doing it the same way twice.Alexander (1977)

Struts Console
James or any other Struts Console maven: I have started working more with Struts Console and find it interesting since it is always presenting all the options available on actions, etc. Also, that it is doing xml validation against the dtd is very nice as well. I still do enjoy using my editor (emacs) on the config files for cut and paste and search and replace, but find the default struts-console xml output format difficult. Is it possible that struts-console 'pretty' will not toss comments and also be available under eclipse? Even better would be the ability to add comments to each xml property. Better still would be a 'copynew' function for major items such as tiles-definitions and action mappings. Of course if you do 'copynew' you would need search and replace. I hope you take this commentary in the spirit in which it is meant, as a thanks for a program useful enough to be worth commenting about. Thanks Edgar

RE: FW: Validation DTD bug? (impacts my use of Struts Console)
James, I never received any feedback, but, they did address this problem in the just announced release of the 1.0.1 version of the Commons Validator. The DTD in this version has the following DOCTYPE specification: !DOCTYPE form-validation PUBLIC -//Apache Software Foundation//DTD Commons Validator Rules Configuration 1.0//EN http://jakarta.apache.org/commons/dtds/validator_1_0.dtd; And the ELEMENT definition in the DTD for field elements has been changed to this: !ELEMENT field (msg|arg0|arg1|arg2|arg3|var)* Until a future release of your tool that supports this new version of the Commons Validator, I can continue to hand edit my validation.xml files directly. My main concern was that the DTD allow for the necessary field validation definitions going forward and this has been dealt with. So, I'm a happy camper now. It would have been nice for someone to let me know they were taking care of it when I asked though. Oh well. Cheers, Mike Van Riper [EMAIL PROTECTED] -Original Message- From: James Holmes [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Thursday, December 12, 2002 12:48 PM To: Van Riper, Mike Subject: RE: FW: Validation DTD bug? (impacts my use of Struts Console) Actually, I think this message is best targeted at the Commons Validator lists. I think you're right about the DTD, but haven't fully looked into it. If you get feedback from the Commons lists let me know. -james --- Van Riper, Mike [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: -Original Message- I'm guessing your Validator config file issue is similar. I don't think it is. The DOCTYPE in that case was already using the 1.1 versioning like so: !DOCTYPE form-validation PUBLIC -//Apache Software Foundation//DTD Validation Configuration 1.1//EN http://jakarta.apache.org/struts/dtds/validation_1_1.dtd; I believe this has more to do with the original issue I posted on the struts-user list. My validation.xml file doesn't validate successfully against this DTD requirement: !ELEMENT field (msg?, arg0?, arg1?, arg2?, arg3?, var* ) because when you use both the minlength and maxlength validations on a single field, you end up with more than one arg1 element inside the field element definition like so: field property=zip depends=minlength, maxlength arg0 key=prompt.zip/ arg1 name=minlength key=${var:minlength} resource=false/ arg1 name=maxlength key=${var:maxlength} resource=false/ var var-nameminlength/var-name var-value5/var-value /var var var-namemaxlength/var-name var-value10/var-value /var /field Unless the arg1 is defined separately for minlength and maxlength validations, it is not possible to generate the correct validation error message with the appropriate minlength or maxlength value inserted in the error message. This is why I suggested that the DTD needed to change like so: !ELEMENT field (msg?, arg0*, arg1*, arg2*, arg3*, var* ) This way, you are allowed to specify different argx values for substitution in the error message when different validation rules are violated. I realize this is a validation DTD issue and not a Struts Console issue. However, it is preventing me from using the Struts Console in the recommended fashion with validation turned on and I do believe this is a validator DTD bug. I've already changed my local copy of the DTD so I can validate against it in my IDE, IntelliJ. However, this doesn't help me when I try to use the Struts Console on my validation.xml file. I'm surprised that I didn't get a single response when I posted this on the struts-user list before. Should I have posted this on the struts-dev list instead? - Mike Van Riper [EMAIL PROTECTED] P.S. James, Thanks again for your help correcting my DOCTYPE specification for tile definitions. I am able to edit tile definitions now using your tool without leaving the comfort of my Java IDE. :-) __ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Mail Plus - Powerful. Affordable. RE: [ANNOUNCE] Struts Console v3.0
Excellent tools, thank you! Where can I report bugs and problems? Is this mailing list good? Since I already wasted your time I think I found a problem: I opened the validation.xml that comes with Struts example (after adding the DOCTYPE line). In that file there are two forms, one form with two fields that have 3 args and another form with several fields that have only one arg. However, when I browse the fields of the form I see the second and third args of the fields in the first form! While I am at it, an improvement suggestion. A most useful feature would be to be able to stand on a name of a class and be able to open it in the eclipse's editor, as far as I understand eclipse plug-ins it shouldn't be very complicated to do. I know exactly what you are saying! However, since I started using vi about 6 months ago, my knowledge of the Java J2SE and J2EE API has increased 10-fold because I cannot use the tool-tip (dot-completion) crutch. Instead, I have to actually READ the damn thing and make my own assessment of what is appropriate. Then compile and run...oops! That wasn't the right method ...must...try...something...else...read...the...documentation. :-) -Original Message- From: Andrew Hill [mailto:andrew.david.hill;gridnode.com] Sent: Thursday, October 31, 2002 6:13 AM To: Struts Users Mailing List Subject: RE: [OT] Swing [WAS: RE: [ANNOUNCE] Struts Console v3.0] Id be lost without my JBuilder since I started using it my brains ability to store details of method names and parameters has dropped to zero. RE: [OT] Swing.... [WAS: RE: [ANNOUNCE] Struts Console v3.0]
I use eclipse for many reasons, one of which is it's GUI and relative light weight (50-60 MB). The eclipse group wrote SWT because Swing stinks, everyone except Sun recognizes that (that should stir some people up ;-). SWT passes graphics calls straight to the OS so it's fast and you get native widgets, none of this fake stuff. The swing implementation on the Mac is the only one that passes straight through to the OS like SWT. I have to add my 2cents on this dicussion. I've been using eclipse for the past 3 months, and I absolutely love it. If you get the right plugins, you can customize it for whatever development you are doing. You can find a list of plugins for Eclipse at: http://eclipse-plugins.2y.net/eclipse/index.jsp. I highly recommend it if you don't have the resources to purchase one of the higher end tools. No. Struts Console opens in another window because it is written with Swing and not Eclipse's native SWT. Yes, I've seen that one but it's currently not as nice as Struts Console. You wouldn't have to rewrite it if you made it open source :-). What are your thoughts on that? I use both Lombaz and Aston Wizard. Lombaz is better, but it is very difficult to set up correctly. Since I am NOT using one the application or EJB servers it configured to work with, I have it only partially working in my version of Eclipse. Re: Don't know how to use struts-console 3.0 with Forte
Thanks James, Jerry, and everyone's help. I have found out some issues here (want to let you know that i got it to work): 1) if my struts-config.xml (or any name) was created by forte (or maybe opened by the source editor) earlier, forte will always use source editor to open the file. To work around this, I created the new one and copy paste the old entries into the new file. 2)i was using external entities like this (I thought it would be more modular): !DOCTYPE struts-config PUBLIC -//Apache Software Foundation//DTD Struts Configuration 1.1//EN http://jakarta.apache.org/struts/dtds/struts-config_1_1.dtd;[ !ENTITY datasources SYSTEM struts-datasources-config.xml !ENTITY plugins SYSTEM struts-plugins-config.xml ] struts-console doesn't support this. RE: [ANNOUNCE] Struts Console v3.0
Hi, have managed to use the console to edit struts-config.xml files, (from the console and the Jbuilder plugin) however if I try to load tiles xml files with the header ?xml version=1.0 encoding=ISO-8859-1? !DOCTYPE tiles-definitions PUBLIC -//Apache Software Foundation//DTD Tiles Configuration//EN http://jakarta.apache.org/struts/dtds/tiles-config.dtd; or validator files with the header ?xml version=1.0 encoding=ISO-8859-1? !DOCTYPE form-validation PUBLIC -//Apache Software Foundation//DTD Struts Validation Configuration 1.1//EN http://jakarta.apache.org/struts/dtds/validation_1_1.dtd; I get an unable to build jakarta.apache.org error (from the console), and nothing happens from the Jbuilder plugin Something I've got wrong, any thoughts on where to check? Hey Gary, This is happening because you are using old DOCTYPES for your config files. For Tiles you should be using: !DOCTYPE tiles-definitions PUBLIC -//Apache Software Foundation//DTD Tiles Configuration 1.1//EN http://jakarta.apache.org/struts/dtds/tiles-config_1_1.dtd; For Validator you should be using: !DOCTYPE form-validation PUBLIC -//Apache Software Foundation//DTD Commons Validator Rules Configuration 1.0//EN http://jakarta.apache.org/commons/dtds/validator_1_0.dtd; Let me know if you have any other problems. -james --- Frost, Gary [IT] [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi, have managed to use the console to edit struts-config.xml files, (from the console and the Jbuilder plugin) however if I try to load tiles xml files with the header ?xml version=1.0 encoding=ISO-8859-1? !DOCTYPE tiles-definitions PUBLIC -//Apache Software Foundation//DTD Tiles Configuration//EN http://jakarta.apache.org/struts/dtds/tiles-config.dtd; or validator files with the header ?xml version=1.0 encoding=ISO-8859-1? !DOCTYPE form-validation PUBLIC -//Apache Software Foundation//DTD Struts Validation Configuration 1.1//EN http://jakarta.apache.org/struts/dtds/validation_1_1.dtd; I get an unable to build jakarta.apache.org error (from the console), and nothing happens from the Jbuilder plugin Something I've got wrong, any thoughts on where to check? Struts itself no longer requires this. I submitted an enhancement patch which I'm working with locally (to support context-relative exception paths). Since the official DTD doesn't allow that attribute in that location, I can't use Struts Console with that struts-config file... alternatively, you could commit my patches for me :-) http://nagoya.apache.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=13544 Joe -- -- * Joe Germuska{ [EMAIL PROTECTED] } It's pitiful, sometimes, if they've got it bad.
