Could you check the end of your wrapper.log and logs/freenet-latest.log
for errors or anything that looks serious and either post to the list or
via a pastebin service? This will help the developers to understand
whats happened.

Remove any personal information first ( ip addresses, ports, etc).

[freenet-support] Mac

2015-12-13 Thread Luis Rivera
Hello,

Earlier today I was running Freenet on Normal security and decided to increase
the cache from whatever it was before to 120GB.

Anyway, I noticed that the number of connected nodes started dropping over the
course of a few minutes until the Freenet icon in the Mac status bar went from
Blue to Red.

I shut it down and tried to open up the tray one more time, but the icon just
shows up in the status bar and remains red. I installed another Freenet in a
different directory, and that one seems to be working just fine. How do I fix
the original Freenet?

Thanks,

Is your freenet node running? (I think Macs have the "ps" command that
lists running processes... like "ps aux | grep freenet".) If it's not
running, check the wrapper.log file in freenet's directory for more
details.

[freenet-support] Mac OSX 10.5.8 - Freenet not starting 2

2012-07-25 Thread Steve

Hi,

Further to my request for support with Freenet not starting, I note that
when I use the tray to try starting the application, a file is created
in my Freenet dir called "Freenet" with no extention. When the blue icon
turns back to red on the tray (about 5-10 seconds) the file that was
created disappears.

Kind regards,
Steve Cooke

[freenet-support] Mac OS X 10.5.8 - Freenet not starting

2012-07-25 Thread Steve

Hi,

I'm new to Freenet. I have downloaded the software, and I've run the
installer. All good until the webpage (which I understand is a wizard to
help with configuring the application) fails to load with this message:
"Unable to connect - Firefox can't establish a connection to the server
at 127.0.0.1:."

There is nothing appearing in the java console. I am running Java 1.6
("Java version "1.6.0_26"

Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_26-b03-384-9M3425)")

Can you offer me some ideas about how I should proceed please?

Kind regards,
Steve Cooke

Yes, recent Sun doesn't support PPC, but OpenJDK does, and if it's a recent
version of OpenJDK, it should work well with Freenet.

IMHO the geeky debian or gentoo distro's are probably your best option,
although there may be some wierd PPC distros out there. The learning curve
isn't _that_ bad nowadays, the installer will put a GUI in, there are update
notices, everything you could ever want is packaged, and so on. You will need a
backup first though, or maybe a new disk; if the objective is to keep costs
down, just write a backup and reconstruct (especially if you have installation
media for 10.5.8; if you don't you'll need to mess around with resizing
partitions, you might need a liveCD for that ...) I repeat what I said
originally: don't run obsolete unmaintained operating systems, it isn't safe.

Last Ubuntu which did PPC was 6.06, but it's quite old, and you will have hard
time installing java which is not OpenJDK there if you are not geeky enough to
work with Debian.

Yes, Freenet requires java 1.6. You may be able to get it working with OpenJDK.
Failing that I recommend you install a modern linux which supports PPC. Debian
or Gentoo would probably work on it, for example, although I doubt Ubuntu
supports it, and the first two distros are a bit geeky. Running a network
connected system with no security updates is always a bad idea.

Hi - I just want to confirm that I will not be able to run freenet on my

Upgrading to OS 10.6 (snow leopard) is impossible because of the PPC based
architecture.

Unless freenet can still work with java 1.5?!

2011-05-29 Thread Mark Hurdle
Hi Daxter,

You said "You really, *really* shouldn't be upgrading Freenet by downloading
and re-installing it.".

Since this is a thread about upgrading Freenet... what if I am building
Freenet using ant?
What's the best way to do it?

Is it OK to do git pull origin, ant -f build-clean.xml and java
freenet.node.NodeStarter?

Mark.

I wonder if this will help. It's from wrapper.log. Unfortunately I don't
understand it, but I do understand the words "error", "bad", and "fatal".

Mac OS X 10.5 has Java 1.5 installed by default, which is what Freenet
requires. If you want to check for yourself you can type "java -version" into
the command line.

You really, *really* shouldn't be upgrading Freenet by downloading and
re-installing it. Updating should be a painless procedure. Depending on the
setting you chose when you first set up your node, it will either auto update
or ask you to update when a new version is released.

You might not be able to connect to 127.0.0.1: because you had not shut
down Freenet properly before you installed the new version directly over the
old version. That means that port is still being reserved for the old (now
defunct) process. In my experience for that situation, Freenet will simply use
the next available port (usually 8889). Why not try connecting through that?

2 connections after 2 hours? That can't be right. I've always gotten a minimum
of 10 connections after 30 or so minutes of uptime.

Admittedly I am not familiar with the Linux installer, but you shouldn't be
using it when you're running Mac OS X.

That's odd. Have you checked the log files to see what might be causing it to
shut down like that?

What program are you referring to that dies after 8 seconds? Freenet, or the
update.sh script? If you mean running update.sh only lasts 8 seconds, then I
would expect that means that it quickly checked and found that everything was
updated.

AFAIK the Linux version might not be able to make any connections because some
part of the install is incompatible with Mac OS X. After doing a clean install
of the Mac version, try my suggestion above to try connecting to 127.0.0.1:8889
and consecutively higher ports. I would suggest keeping a copy of the log files
of any installs you currently have, as they may prove useful.

Hope this helps,

[freenet-support] Mac OSX 10.5 unable to connect since Freenet build 1372

2011-05-26 Thread harry smythe

Hello,

Please excuse my very limited technical knowledge.

I'm running Mac OSX 10.5.8 with 2 GB RAM and Firefox 4.0.1 on a Macbook. My
JavaVM seems to be 12.8 and I can't find a newer one for Mac.

Up until Freenet 0.7.5 Build #1372 build01372, Freenet-ext Build #26 r23771,
I had no problems. Normally, I would install the Mac version from the
"downloads" webpage, or use the offline installer for Linux. Either worked
well. IZPack install always took the browser to 127.0.0.1:/wizard. Using
the line command "status", I could see:
"macbook:*** ***$ ./run.sh status
Freenet 0.7 is running (10433)."

With all the updated install programs after build #1372, the installs would
seem to finish, but the browser at 127.0.0.1: wouldn't launch, or if it
did, it would show:
"Unable to connect, Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at
127.0.0.1:."
Double-checking through Terminal with the line command "status", I could see:
"macbook:*** ***$ ./run.sh status
Freenet 0.7 is running (6006).
macbook:*** ***$ ./run.sh status
Freenet 0.7 is not running."
>From "running" to "not running" takes about 8-10 seconds.

For some weeks, I offline-installed build 1372 for Linux, had no problem with
the browser interface, waited for a few connections (2/40 connections after 2
hours) and for the "update" button to appear on the 127.0.0.1 webpage. (Without
connections, that update option isn't available.) This was slow but seemed to
work after some time.

Now, 1372 still installs but can't make any connections at all, in any amount
of time. So I can't use that method any more. The 1376 webpage jnlp installs,
but line command "status" shows that the program stops after some seconds
(resulting in Firefox's "unable to connect" message, I guess), as do all the
Linux offline installers after 1372.

After a 1372 install, a line command called ",/update.sh start" seems to show
all kinds of downloading and installing of jars and ext-jars, but the updated
program still dies after about 8 seconds.

So with a 1372 Linux offline installer, I can install and get a browser
interface because it continues to run but cannot connect to others. With any of
the updated installers, I can install, but get no browser interface, because
the program seems to die too soon, I guess.

I've hit the wall. Sorry if I'm missing something obvious. Any ideas?

Thanks.

I believe OSX 10.6 includes updated versions. Apparently Apple
doesn't consider remote code execution vulnerabilities serious enough
to warrant a rapid patch to older versions of OSX, though.

Known problem, Apple's fault. Sorry, not much we can do until Apple releases a
new JVM based on 1.6.0_15 or 1.5.0_20.

Could anyone who has access to a MacOS/X box please contact us? We need to
test the new startup script for the installer, so that when we release 0.7.0,
it will work out of the box even with a reboot (like it does on windows).

[freenet-support] Mac OSX help!

2007-04-24 Thread Matthew Toseland
Your specific problem is that you are typing two commands on the same
line:

cd /Volumes/LACIE/Freenet/0.7 ./run.sh start

Where did you see this? These are two separate lines.

First you do cd /Volumes/LACIE/Freenet/0.7
Then you do ./run.sh start

Does that work? Please tell us if it doesn't.

As for the general point, we don't have any active developers using
OS/X. In fact, we have very few willing to work on Windows installers
let alone OS/X, which is about as popular as Linux on the desktop but
far less so amongst programmers and privacy geeks.

[freenet-support] Mac OSX help!

2007-04-24 Thread Joseph Prestiano

I have tried about a half-dozen times to use Freenet 0.7 by reinstalling
and setting up a new darknet eash time. It installs fine. It runs fine. But
I can't restart the node once it has closed. This is necessary as I have to
restart my computer from time to time. I read somewhere online that Freenet
should restart automatically with your computer, but mine doesn't. The
problem is probably me. I know nothing about Unix or programming. I don't
think I'm entering in the right command-line code. I have been desperately
searching the internet for the proper procedure, but as little Freenet info
is out there, there is virtually none for OSX. I have managed to find a few
hits, tried them and variations on them to no avail. I find that allot of
Unix explanations on the net are very incomplete. They say to type
such-and-such, leaving out a piece because they believe it to be understood
and you will fill in the gaps on your own. As, I've said, I know nothing
about Unix or programming. (All of those files and applications bundled w/
the installer and we can't have a simple executable file in the OSX GUI? -
If there is, by the way, it isn't working on mine as I have tried every file
that looked like it could work before figuring I would have to use the
Terminal.) I state this because when I describe what I'm doing I will be
very exact - even knowing that my file hierarchy will be different than
yours. I hope if I am lucky enough to receive a response, whoever replies
will do the same. This is what I have so far:

In terminal type

  cd /Volumes/LACIE/Freenet/0.7 ./run.sh

Terminal responds

[Process completed]

But the Node never starts running again. Browser returns

Safari can’t open the page “http://localhost:/” because it could not
connect to the server “localhost”.

I get the same response for

cd /Volumes/LACIE/Freenet/0.7 ./run.sh start
cd /Volumes/LACIE/Freenet/0.7 ./run.sh
cd /Volumes/LACIE/Freenet/0.7 ./Freenet start
and
cd /Volumes/LACIE/Freenet/0.7 ./Freenet

Until the last time I tried I would always get "file not found" messages
from Terminal. Now it seems to be doing something different out of nowhere.
Yet, even after several attempts and a long time waiting (as I've heard it
takes awhile to start up) - nothing.
Please, please, please someone help! I'm sure I can't be the only one
having this problem. If it runs fine but won't restart then it deffinately
works on my computer. Its just some little Very basic problems like this
are what will keep allot of people away from Freenet and stunt its future
growth. Many of the future features sound interesting, but until easier
setup and usage can be made available, Freenet will never strive. Most
people don't want to deal with this kind of a pain.

Thanks in advance,
Joe

[freenet-support] Mac OSX help!

2007-04-21 Thread Joseph Prestiano

Safari can?t open the page ?http://localhost:/? because it could not
connect to the server ?localhost?.

Thanks in advance,
Joe

Re: [freenet-support] Mac OS X workarounds?

2005-01-06 Thread Howard White
Yep Apple's Java 1.4.2 is the problem. I've tried many times for over a year
at each successive Mac OS X version upgrade, to use Java 1.4.2, and each
time, Freenet running in the background will cause a kenal panic or complete
crash and lockup of the system.

Downgrading the entire Mac OS X to 10.3 from original disks is the only
reliable way to go back to Java 1.4.1. It's not that bad, just use the clean
install and most everything will be saved. Then use the regular Apple update
to bring things back to 10.3.7 MINUS the Java 1.4.2 upgrade of course.

[freenet-support] Mac OS X workarounds?

2005-01-05 Thread Gregory Cooksey
Hello,
I've been trying on and off to use freenet under Mac OS X 10.3.7 but my
system keeps crashing when I do. I seem to remember someone saying
that it was a problem with Apple's Java 1.4.2 system and that backing
out to 1.4.1 would fix it? If this is the case, does anybody know how
I can back out to 1.4.1? Or are there other workarounds?

2004-04-30 Thread Howard White
Yep, works fine. Follow the Linux instructions with a few additional steps.

1) Before entering the terminal command 'sh start-freenet.sh', edit your
freenet.cnf to use 512 connections and enter ulimit -n 1024 in the terminal
to get the Mac OS X to run more connections than the standard 128.

2) Find the help files for the Mac users (Google'd it I did) and to adjust
your Mozilla 1.6 to have lots more connections as the helps specify in
Mozilla's about:config listing.

Yes. These instructions assume that you already have a JRE. I don't
recall ever manually downloading one, so I guess Sun's 1.4.1_01-24 must
have come with Panther.

First, you'll need to obtain the latest build of whichever branch
(stable or unstable) you prefer. The latest build distributions will
always be located at:

http://freenetproject.org/snapshots/freenet-MMDD.tgz
http://freenetproject.org/snapshots/freenet-unstable-MMDD.tgz

For example:

http://freenetproject.org/snapshots/freenet-20040428.tgz
http://freenetproject.org/snapshots/freenet-unstable-20040428.tgz

Download whichever you prefer, then `gunzip` and `tar xfv` the file. If
you download using Safari, it will automatically decompress with Stuffit
Expander.

Open a terminal session and cd to the Freenet directory, e.g. `cd
~/Desktop/freenet` and run `./start-freenet.sh`. Reply to the
configuration options and a fairly default freenet.conf file will be
generated. The script then starts Freenet itself.

If you need to set some configuration options that the preconfig script
doesn't ask for, you'll want to run `./stop-freenet.sh` now to stop the
node, then modify freenet.conf. TAKE GREAT CARE in what editor you use
to edit freenet.conf! I don't know whether it's a line break problem
with the autogenerated config file, or a problem with OS X's copies of
vi and pico (I suspect the former :) but anytime I edit freenet.conf
from the command line, it gets mangled. Use Apple's TextPad application
to edit the file.

When you are finished editing the config file, run `./start-freenet.sh`
again.

Actually, Apple's JMV 1.4.2 update has caused many other problems for me on
all manner of Mac Oses. For example, my PowerBook 15" Al, began kernal panic
on a regular basis under 10.2.8 and 10.3.2. As I said before my G3 iBook
Freenet server did kernal panics as well. At work, two different G4 servers
running 10.2.8 began kernal panics.

IMHO, Apple's JMV 1.4.2 is not ready for prime time.

On Mac OS X 10.3.3

1) Only use Apple's JMV 1.4.1. Do not install Apple's JVM 1.4.2 via the
update panel as Freenet will crash.

2) Download the Freenet 5076

3) Fix your Mozilla browser 1.6 about:config to have 200 connections,
100/host, 50 persist/proxy and 10 connections/server

4) Edit the freenet config file to allow 512 connection up from the standard
128.

5) Then set the ulimit -n 1024 in the terminal before launching sh
start-freenet.sh

Running here currently successfully a 4Gig Freenet node off a cable modem
behind an Airport exstreme via a NAT fixed IP from the ISP's fixed IP on a
G3 iBook 800Mhz with 640MB RAM. There are also three virtual domains
severing up three PHP postnuke CMS sites From 4D's WebStar 5.3.1 system
w/Webmail. There are also three active user accounts for Halo games and
such.

Activity monitor shows Freenet using ~150MB of real memory once it gets
fully integrated into the freenet nodes. Freenet may need a restart every
two or three days if lots of other activity from the other accounts has been
happening. I guess because of memory fragmentation.

Re: [freenet-support] Mac

2004-04-08 Thread Ian Clarke
Getting Freenet working on OSX is pretty straight-forward provided you
are comfortable using a command line. Basically you just need to follow
the instructions for Linux.

We could certainly use someone willing to package Freenet up nicely such
that it can be installed and used on OSX without resort to the
command-line - but unfortunately none of the core devs use OSX :-(

Ian.

The Freenet software is written in Java. It consists entirely of
two files: freenet.jar and freenet-ext.jar. Anything else is just
a frill.

All you need is a Java virtual machine that works on your OS and is
compatible with Sun Java version 1.2 (or, actually, 1.1 with a few
1.2 features added).

Then just download the two .jar files, and a seednodes.ref file
(preferably from a friend, but from freenetproject.org if you have
to); set your CLASSPATH; run "java freenet.node.Main --config" to
create the config file; and run "java freenet.node.Main" to start
the node.

If you can't get a command line, then ask a Macintosh guru how to
do the MacOS 8 equivalent of the above instructions. :-(

(Oh, P.S.: freenet.jar is called "freenet-latest.jar" on the snapshots
page for some reason I can't guess. It needs to be renamed after
downloading, or your CLASSPATH needs to be adjusted to match.)
