[pfSense Support] ISO Images ... ??

2005-08-04 Thread David Strout
Everyone,

Can anyone tell me what's going on with the ISO
images. I have tried several of the newest
releases (0.73.x, 0.72.x & 0.71.x) w/ all the same
results the system boots fine as a bootable
ISO, but when you run the install script
[/FreeSBIE/scripts/install.sh] it fails everytime
at the same point "Loading Backend"

I have reverted to the 0.63.x branch to do new
installs then upgrade to the lated 0.73.x, but I
am really interested in doing a fresh install.

Thoughts

I
would suggest doing it the following way:

1.
Boot the LiveCD
2.
Assign Interfaces at bootup (you'll be asked)
3.
Config your settings for basic connectivity from the WebGui and make your WAN
work (the settings will be used for the installation and you'll be able to run
the online-update at the end of the installationprocess)
4.
Enter "installer" from the shellmenu (at the menuitemprompt, not going to shell)
including the online-update if you wish to do so

Thanks for the input but one more ?When I kick off the installer from the console menu in the way you specify ... it looks like it is installing FreeBSD/DragonflyBSD and not pfSense, and also another point is that there is no provisioning for making a swap partition/slice as there had been in previous installs. Was the installer re-wrote? AW: [pfSense Support] ISO ?

2005-08-23 Thread Holger Bauer

The
installer changed to lua, so yes, it is a completely new system. Some messages
need some cosmetic fixing but it installs pfSense. For the first question on
partitioning just enter a "*" and it will assign the complete space of the media
to be used. Then hit several times ok, go on, ... until you come to the
subpartitioning. By default it suggests a "/" partition with "*" and a "swap"
with some size. unless your media is actually smaller than the swap (which
might happen if you are running from a CF) you can keep this settings. If
running from CF or another small media you can remove the swap-partition
completely and just run "/" with "*". Go ahead. Firmwareupdate is
optional.

[pfSense Support] ISO problems ... still

2005-08-10 Thread David Strout
Anyone,

I have tried burning all of the version 0.73.x
ISOs, and still the problem of when you launch the
"/FreeSBIE/scripts/install.sh" script it hangs on
the "Waiting for Backend" ANSI screen.
Additionally, a couple of mesages pop up on the
bottom of the screen ... xl0 link changed state to
DOWN & xl0 link tate changed to UP.

BTW ... xl0 is configured for the WAN interface on
the ISO boot up and pre-config.

I'm at a loss ... tried a few BIOS tweaks and
nothing seems to help. I'm wondering if anyone
else is experiencing the same symptoms.

BTW2 ... tried two different PC's a Dell
GX260 & a generic PC running an AMD Athelon 700Mhz

I have had no problems w/ prior versions (0.68.x),
but this issue crept up in/or about the 0.73.0
version.

Any ideas ?

RE: [pfSense Support] ISO problems ... still

2005-08-11 Thread William Pflaumer
David and List,
I,too have not been able to do a harddrive install on my Dell Dimension XPS
R300 since V 0.63 or so.(Last version that the installer functioned properly)
That version had a bug with DHCP Client on the WAN Interface. I get Kernel
Page Faults about 50% of the install will all later LiveCDs. I don't have
specific errors, but I tried about 6 different Live CDs versions. I tried
Bios tweaks (NO sound, NO power Management, NO USB), different memory (Ran
Extensive memory tests),different HD,CDROM Drives, Use known good 3Com 3c905b
from my Monowall PC. As a New Version comes out and fails to install, I try
different things (place HD and CDROM Drive on the Same IDE Channel or delete
the Partition with DELPART), the list goes on and on. I tried the install on
a Toshiba 300mhz Celeron and I get ATA IDENTITY issues.

Someone will probably suggest install that earlier version ( I believe it was
0.63) and do a manual update from there, but the way this product is evolving
that idea probable will not work. I really like this firewall (been using
Monowall since pb27) but I just cannot get this SOB to install. The feature I
am waiting to see is DANSGUARDIAN WebFilter with Squid Transparent Proxy.

I can post the specific errors that I receive if need be (no time to do it
now)

Thanks for this great Product,

Bill

Re: [pfSense Support] ISO problems ... still

2005-08-11 Thread David Strout

I did a little digging on the FreeBSD, FreeSBIE and DragonFLY sites and found little or not relavant info, but I did a couple of Googles and found some pertinant info ... seems there is some known issues w/ installing *BSDs w/ the CD in a different IDE channel than the HDD that you are installing to.  There are also lots of hits on disabling the APM (Power Mgmt.) . I have tried and tried to get the newest ISO (0.74.6) to work w/ many many different hardware configurations, but to no avail !!!Naything I can do to contribute to getting this worked out let me know I have a couple of test platforms to work w/ and a pretty outfitted lab at my disposl to test in.I did notice that unless you install fresh from the ISO some of the fixes don't apply correctly namely the delete icon on the "IPSec:SPD" page, and also I noticed that the fix for the adding DHCP only fixed itself (linking to the "edit static mapping" page) after up!

I was not at first and then I switched to a SCSI controller and SCSI HD to
see if that helped. It did not.

Sorry, I installed 0.67.8 then upgradeed to the latest 0.7x version.

If it fails it would also be helpful to try running:

/usr/local/bin/lua50c51 /usr/local/share/dfuibe_lua/main.lua \
   dir.root=/FreeSBIE/ \
   option.booted_from_install_media=true

... From a shell prompt to see if any lua errors kick up.

David, You are definately on to something with the IDE channels. I
have PFsense running just fine on my production box (Compaq) but I
have been having a heck of a time getting it installed on a particular
test machine (white box). I then started playing with FreeBSD, PC-BSD
and DesktopBSD and none of them would install on my machine so I
figured it was my box and left it alone for a while. Now that you
mentioned it the CD is on the secondary IDE channel and the HD is on
the primary channel. I'm gonna play tonight and see. I'll keep the
list updated. Many people I know that build PC's always set the HD's
on the primary channel and the CD' on the secondary. might be a common
thing

All the boxes I've tried have the HD in primary and CD on secondary
and I haven't had issues. Most PC's are setup that way, so I think
we'd be seeing a LOT more issues if that was always the case.
Especially with FreeBSD, given the number of installs out there. I've
installed dozens of different FreeBSD systems with HD on primary and
CD on secondary with no issues.

If you see the same issues with DesktopBSD, FreeSBIE, DragonFly, and
pfsense, that's understandable as they all use the BSD Installer.
When you throw FreeBSD into the mix, it starts to make a lot less
sense.

Those using Dell systems, do you have the latest BIOS on them? On
older Dell systems I've had some weird problems with FreeBSD due to
BIOS bugs. An upgrade to the latest BIOS resolved them. there's
obviously still something else going on here, but that's a good thing
to do in the mean time. ;)

DesktopBSD actually doesn't use BSDInstaller. So that's most likely
going to change the equation.

RE: [pfSense Support] ISO problems ... still

2005-08-11 Thread Wesley Joyce

Okay gentlemen, using pfSense-LiveCD-0.74.8 and a single Dell GX110
running the latest BIOS (version A09) with an Adaptec 2940UW adapter and an
18GB Seagate Barracuda drive, I could

1.  Not install to the SCSI HDD when the CDROM was on the secondary
bus as a master device.

2.  I could install to the same SCSI HDD when the CDROM was on the
primary bus as a master device.

On the same GX110, with the SCSI devices removed, I could

1.
Install to IDE HDD with the CDROM as a slave device
on the primary bus.

2.
Not install to IDE HDD with the CDROM as a master
on the secondary bus.

So it is evident there is a problem with
the installer and the source and target being on two different buses.

I don’t know about you guys, but I
don’t need the CDROM access once I get installed.  J.  But it is
annoying if you don’t know the workaround.

pertinant info ... seems there is some known issues w/ installing *BSDs w/ the
CD in a different IDE channel than the HDD that you are installing to.
There are also lots of hits on disabling the APM (Power Mgmt.) . I have
tried and tried to get the newest ISO (0.74.6) to work w/ many many different
hardware configurations, but to no avail !!!

Naything I can do to contribute to getting this worked out let me know I
have a couple of test platforms to work w/ and a pretty outfitted lab at my
disposl to test in.

I did notice that unless you install fresh from the ISO some of the fixes don't
apply correctly namely the delete icon on the "IPSec:SPD" page,
and also I noticed that the fix for the adding DHCP only fixed itself (linking
to the "edit static mapping" page) after up! grading to 0.74.8 today.

GREAT JOB / AWESOME PRODUCT ... how can I be of more assistance ???

Okay, 0.75 installed fine as well to the
SCSI HD with the CDROM as a primary master.

My guess that there is a large file or
directory being copied right around the 50, 53% completion point and not enough
data wasn’t making it between the two buses?

Any news on the issue with the installer? (Moving the CDROM to be on the

Try running:

option.booted_from_install_media=true

... From a shell prompt. Do you get a lua error?

Ok, I can second Dimitri. Moving the CD from Secondary Master to
Primary Slave did the trick for me as well. On both pfSense on
DesktopBSD. Haven't done FreeBSD or PCBSD yet but this looks
promising.

ATI AIO Pro128

I can't say the same here ..
I've tried the following ..

pri master = 10GB HDD
pri slave = empty
sec master = empty
sec slave = Samsung CD-ROM

NOT WORKING !! Still hangs on the "Waiting for Backend"

Next I tried .
pri master = 10GB HDD
pri slave = empty
sec master = Samsung CD-ROM
sec slave = empty

NOT WORKING !! Same results

Lastly I tried .
pri master = 10GB HDD
pri slave = Samsung CD-ROM
sec master & slave = empty

NOT WORKING !! Same results

I have vague recollections of having to disable ACPI on to get some
installs to work. (On a Dell I think!) Maybe that is worth trying as well.

See http://wiki.pfsense.com/wikka.php?wakka=BootOptions for more info

RE: [pfSense Support] ISO problems ... still on 0.75 / 0.75.1 iso version error?

2005-08-12 Thread Wesley Joyce
I am now only getting as far as 63% during the install when the CDROM is on
the secondary bus. This is using pfSense-LiveCD-0.75.1 which for some
strange reason still boots and display 0.75 as the version. Should I
download this from a different mirror?

It was only a installer fix so I didnt bump the system version. That is normal.

What do you mean getting as far as 63%? What happens?

During the cpdup command processing after the partitioning, formatting, it
faults at the 63% progress indicator during the installation.

Again, I need more info. What faults? FreeBSD? The backend? The
installer front end?
