Re: [pfSense Support] 1.2.3-release rebooting
Just as an update on this whole issue I've been having, my firewall continues to crash/reboot, the developer kernel isn't stopping that from happening. So, ordered an Alix board, that will resolve my problem :) Thanks all for the help and suggestions Charles On Tue, Apr 20, 2010 at 12:26 AM, Chris Buechler wrote: > On Thu, Apr 15, 2010 at 3:17 PM, Bao Ha wrote: >> >> Padlock does not have an issue that we know of! Re: [pfSense Support] 1.2.3-release rebooting
I currently do export the syslog messages to a linux box, during the last crash/reboot, we got nothing meaningful, see my first message in this thread. There is nothing wrong with the fan, its turnning at an acceptable rate, and since this box never turns off, I checked the temps within Bios, and all are normal. I don't think it's a heat issue. I'm not doubting that it could be a hardware issue, but nothing has definitely pointed to that, it's purely speculation at this time. Until it crashes again, with the developer kernel in place, I won't know more. Thanks Charles On Thu, Apr 15, 2010 at 2:42 PM, Bao Ha wrote: > Hi Charles, > > Can you set up a syslog server? Re: [pfSense Support] 1.2.3-release rebooting
Hi Charles, Can you set up a syslog server? It will allow better capturing of the error messages. Another option is just to replace the cpu fan. It costs around $5 in Southern California. FreeBSD does not like VIA's implementation of ACPI. So, we cannot really get any useful information about the system healths. The readings in the BIOS can be suspected. They are just measuring the voltage levels, not really the fan speeds. It depends on the quality of the cpu fan. Some fans degrade rapidly over time, they might require more voltage to maintain its performance. You may see the 5500rpm redaing because the systemboard still feeds 5V to a fan, while it may actually be lower. Re: [pfSense Support] 1.2.3-release rebooting
Hi Charles, Padlock does not have an issue that we know of! We have sold hundreds of VIA C7 systems with Padlock running pfSense. If it was a problem, we would have asked Chris B. to fix it. You can always compile your own kernel without including the Padlock module. Unless you are using Padlock, like running IPSec VPN, I doubt that it would interfere. I still suspect it is a hardware problem. Is it still under warranty? Can you RMA it back? A hardware vendor would be in a better position to monitor and to detect something like this. I haven't personally seen it on a number of VIA systems we have in production, but a couple people have reported spontaneous reboots on systems with padlock after it was added back for 1.2.3 release. - To unsubscribe, e-mail: support-unsubscr...@pfsense.com For additional commands, e-mail: support-h...@pfsense.com Commercial support available - https://portal.pfsense.org
Re: [pfSense Support] 1.2.3-release rebooting
I had similar issues as described here - I ran all sorts of tests on the system and couldnt come up with a definitive cause of the issue although I am blaming it on hardware. Some components can be tough to test ie power supply / heat related issues. I ended up installing same config on different hardware and have so far (knock on wood) been up for a couple of weeks now. Re: [pfSense Support] 1.2.3-release rebooting
That was from my external syslog server, and it showed before and after, which had nothing out of the ordinary. I've enabled the developer kernel, just waiting on it to crash again. Re: [pfSense Support] 1.2.3-release rebooting
This box has been running with no problems since I bought it new, first with monowall and now pfsense. I ran 3 passes with memtest86 with no errors. I thought it was a Cyrix, but it is in fact a VIA 1.5ghz cpu. True, its a cheap system, but the only moving part in it is the cpu fan, which is working fine. I'll try the developers kernel to see if I can see why its failing. Thanks for the tips Charles On Mon, Apr 12, 2010 at 11:59 AM, Seth Mos wrote: > Op 12-4-2010 17:56, Charles Goldsmith schreef: > >> The computer its running on is about 2 years old, a Cyrix 1ghz with > > Oh noes, a Cyrix. This has been going on for a few days, and I've been Run atleast a memtest86, a it seems there are a number of bootable cds out there with it shipping. Perhaps we should consider a memtest86 on our LiveCDs for diagnostics. It happens enough.
