That means it isn't panicing, it's just spontaneously rebooting, which
is almost definitely a hardware problem of some sort.

Just as an update on this whole issue I've been having, my firewall
continues to crash/reboot, the developer kernel isn't stopping that
from happening.

So, ordered an Alix board, that will resolve my problem :)

Thanks all for the help and suggestions

I haven't seen it on any hardware that you guys sell, Bao. In fact our
primary colocation facility is running behind one VIA system from
Hacom and uses the Padlock with IPsec and OpenVPN with 0 problems.
Same for my primary firewall, and one other system I'm running in
production, and those of many of our support customers. Never seen a
problem on any of them.

I'm not sure if it's actually padlock related, and it definitely does
not affect all hardware with padlock as I've never seen it on a
variety of hardware from Hacom that run in some heavy duty roles, but
there have been at least a couple reports on the forum of people
seeing this after upgrading to a version that added back padlock
(without an accompanying FreeBSD version change IIRC).

Re: [pfSense Support] 1.2.3-release rebooting

2010-04-15 Thread Charles Goldsmith
I currently do export the syslog messages to a linux box, during the
last crash/reboot, we got nothing meaningful, see my first message in
this thread.

There is nothing wrong with the fan, its turnning at an acceptable
rate, and since this box never turns off, I checked the temps within
Bios, and all are normal. I don't think it's a heat issue.

I'm not doubting that it could be a hardware issue, but nothing has
definitely pointed to that, it's purely speculation at this time.
Until it crashes again, with the developer kernel in place, I won't
know more.

Thanks
Charles

It is not fanless, that is the only moving part I have in the box, and
I have the bios enabled to monitor the fan.  It was running at about
5500 rpm last night when I checked it.

Since Padlock has known issues, is there anything that can be done?

Re: [pfSense Support] 1.2.3-release rebooting

2010-04-15 Thread Bao Ha
Hi Charles,

Can you set up a syslog server? It will allow better capturing of the
error messages.

Another option is just to replace the cpu fan. It costs around $5 in
Southern California. FreeBSD does not like VIA's implementation of
ACPI. So, we cannot really get any useful information about the system
healths.

The readings in the BIOS can be suspected. They are just measuring the
voltage levels, not really the fan speeds. It depends on the quality
of the cpu fan. Some fans degrade rapidly over time, they might
require more voltage to maintain its performance. You may see the
5500rpm redaing because the systemboard still feeds 5V to a fan, while
it may actually be lower.

Are you running the 1.5Ghz VIA C7 fanless? If it takes sometimes to
crash, it could be a heat problem. I would check the CPU fan and

Re: [pfSense Support] 1.2.3-release rebooting

2010-04-15 Thread Bao Ha
Hi Charles,

Padlock does not have an issue that we know of! We have sold hundreds
of VIA C7 systems with Padlock running pfSense. If it was a problem,
we would have asked Chris B. to fix it.

You can always compile your own kernel without including the Padlock
module. Unless you are using Padlock, like running IPSec VPN, I doubt
that it would interfere.

I still suspect it is a hardware problem. Is it still under warranty?
Can you RMA it back? A hardware vendor would be in a better position
to monitor and to detect something like this.

crash, it could be a heat problem. I would check the CPU fan and
ventilation of the enclosure.

You won't seen the padlock item in your BIOS. It is simply built into the CPU.
Post your 'dmesg' output to the list and we can tell if you have padlock or
not...

Just an update on this issue, my firewall was up for 48 hours before I
rebooted it to check for padlock, it doesn't seem that it is an option
in my bios. It was rebooting about every 36 hours, but that seems to
be inconsistent.

I'm still just waiting for it to crash/reboot again to further
diagnose the problem.

Thanks for all of the help

That's much, much, much better than a Cyrix. Does it have padlock? I
haven't personally seen it on a number of VIA systems we have in
production, but a couple people have reported spontaneous reboots on
systems with padlock after it was added back for 1.2.3 release.

I had similar issues as described here - I ran all sorts of tests on
the system and couldnt come up with a definitive cause of the issue
although I am blaming it on hardware. Some components can be tough to
test ie power supply / heat related issues. I ended up installing
same config on different hardware and have so far (knock on wood) been
up for a couple of weeks now.

That was from my external syslog server, and it showed before and
after, which had nothing out of the ordinary. I've enabled the
developer kernel, just waiting on it to crash again.

Thanks

the logs seem to show only what happened after reboot

consider setting up an external syslog server so you can capture
anything that happens in the run up?

This box has been running with no problems since I bought it new,
first with monowall and now pfsense. I ran 3 passes with memtest86
with no errors.

I thought it was a Cyrix, but it is in fact a VIA 1.5ghz cpu. True,
its a cheap system, but the only moving part in it is the cpu fan,
which is working fine.

I'll try the developers kernel to see if I can see why its failing.

Thanks for the tips
Charles

Oh noes, a Cyrix. I thought they all died in 1997.

I've seen no end of problems with those with either windows or linux.

But then again, intel chips and cheap SiS chipsets were pretty horrid in

Perhaps we should consider a memtest86 on our LiveCDs for diagnostics.
It happens enough.
