Firstly, please reply to the list, not directly to me.

Secondly, I don't have any experience with Ubuntu, I use Fedora. So I
don't know how to build the appropriate package, nor know what
dependencies or other config changes are needed.

You would do better asking on an Ubuntu support forum, or possibly
someone on the Pidgin support list can help you.

Sorry!

OK, that seems to have worked OK, thanks Daniel!

This one is definitely not your fault, it's a problem with my work
machine where it simply won't allow access to the web proxy server
unless it's via a browser. Maybe now I can get it fixed as I use Pidgin
for work and I should be able to install it without hassles :)

Now that the problems with the non-GTK+ installer have been fixed, it

With people I've dealt with, using the expression "install" resulted in
complete incomprehension. "Download" was a real struggle too.

Right, well our proxy now allows access to the GTK+ zip file and to the
debug symbols, however when Pidgin tries to download the spell checker
dictionaries it fails because

http://ftp.services.openoffice.org/pub/OpenOffice.org/contrib/

seems to be an empty directory. Have the dictionaries moved elsewhere?
I'm sure the previous info here

http://developer.pidgin.im/wiki/Installing%20Pidgin#manual_win32_spellcheck_installation

pointed to a different download location.

Right, well the problem may well be that the mirror it picks is still
blocked by our proxy. I've put in another bug ticket about it, will see
if that helps ;-)

The admin people are rather resistant to just allowing any program to
access the outside world without authentication

Did you install as a different user? That would make Pidgin look in the

I would have thought that explaining to them that Pidgin is updated
specifically to enhance their security and maintain compatibility would
engender their trust, there is nothing I hate more than knowing that my
software is inadequate for the tasks I need it to fulfil, I would
expect anyone to understand how this approach benefits them.

Remember, Pidgin is free for your use and its developers are committed
to their product. All they ask is that you understand their motivation
and trade a little inconvenience for the benefits that updates and bug
fixes bring.

Well, it sounds like you have a problem that might be caused by
something like a software firewall or similar.

Do you have an anti-virus software running? Might it have decided a new
version of Pidgin needs to be permitted to send data?

Install pidgin, then:

These are required to use pidgin voice+video:

 * farsight2
 * gstreamer
 * gstreamer-plugins-bad-free
 * gstreamer-plugins-base
 * gstreamer-plugins-good
 * gstreamer-python
 * libnice

This one is required to use XMPP video chat with clients using GMail's
integrated client (so it's recomended):
 * gstreamer-ffmpeg

That's for Fedora, I don't know about Ubuntu

You need to open the plugin settings, and find the Windows extended

You need to rebuild all of the Pidgin-related rpms and freshen them
all. So pidgin-2.7.5-.rpm requires
libpurple-2.7.5-.rpm and probably a fair number of others too.

Does anyone else find it entirely bizarre that a successful "signing
in" process on the Yahoo site can result in a continued lack of access
to an "account". Isn't that what this sign-in is accessing in the
first place?

Which version of Pidgin? And what platform (I assume it's Windows, but
am not certain).

Have you applied the Windows Update Root Certificate updates that come
along from time to time? If the root cert is out of date then this is a
possible result.

The answer can be found here:

It's not too difficult a process, but make sure that the .pem files you
download are renamed to remove the string before Microsoft_* in their
filenames.

If you need further help, please ask

Read this and follow the link to the howto:

http://developer.pidgin.im/ticket/12906#comment:39

Then carefully implement it but ensure that when you copy the files you
remove the part of the filenames before Microsoft or it won't work.

If you have further problems then ask again.

You are assuming that Google has a complete and comprehensive idea of
where this list is archived, I seriously doubt that they have.

In any case, the list is carefully described as public within the
Pidgin client. If someone reads that and chooses to ignore it then
there is no effective way of helping them to put their genie back in

Try connecting again a few times, 2.7.7 has the new certificates
included and should work normally. You could try deleting the
certificates using Tools->Certificates and get rid of anything with
live.com or msn.com in the name.

It sounds like you need to ask the plugin author how to check whether
the plugin is receiving the necessary signals or dbus messages and
whether it is correctly talking to Pidgin. If you can show that Pidgin
is receiving a message from the plugin but not acting on it then come
back here, present your evidence, and ask for the help of the devs.

It already does much, all thanks to the tremendous efforts of the
various developers who put so much time into making our use of the
program better. Much of that potential is down to people helping with
using, suggesting, coding, debugging and ensuring that Trac is up to

Well, in that case it's probably worth searching the Trac tickets to
see if there is a known bug or workaround for this sort of problem. I
would expect it to be because the MSN servers try to do a mail delivery
for that address and fail, but it could be something else too.

Posting a debug listing might help too.

This looks like there is a change of behaviour in Windows 7 in
comparison with Vista and earlier. I don't see any suggestion that it
has been fixed yet, so probably your best bet is to post something
into the ticket you mention to see if you can add to the knowledge
there and then live with the problem for a while until someone is able
to fix it and release an updated Pidgin.

No, but others often do. For MXit there *aren't* any other people who
can do it, so it's them or no one.

I was only suggesting that the packaging of MXit officially means users
come here expecting help from the devs and/or users. Clearly many of
them don't realise that MXit and Pidgin are in fact separately
developed, they think of them as a single entity.

Ah, I see, if you're not used to mailing lists it can be a bit
confusing. Essentially you need to confirm that you want to be
subscribed, that's done by sending an email to the address you provide

Well, Pidgin is a multi-protocol client, so it can use the AOL Instant
Messaging service, or Microsoft Messenger (MSN), it depends which
accounts you have set up. I think you would know which service you are
using, it will tell you in the Accounts dialogue that opens with ctrl-A.

That tells me enough to know you need to upgrade to the latest version,
which is 2.7.11. This can be done by downloading it from the Pidgin
site front page at http://pidgin.im and then once you have closed the
current version run the installer and follow the prompts. Note that if
you want localisation and spell-checking you can select this in the
check boxes during the installation, it's also worth installing the
debug symbols as it helps if you suffer any crashes as you can report
the detailed information needed to identify the problem without needing
to know anything about debugging at all.

Once you have done this, see if the error you are suffering still
occurs, if it does, come and ask again on the mailing list. We prefer
to deal with it there as the details are archived so they can be
searched and then we avoid some repeat questions.

Hope this helps a bit, I realise you may find all this a bit confusing.

I assume you realise that Pidgin support is done by volunteers in their
own time, and that Pidgin is a free software project? I will try to
help you out, but it's getting late where I am so I won't be around for
much longer. I have copied this to the list so that people see what's
been said.

Yes, they can be because the data is being passed between participants
by a server that is under 3rd party control.

If you want plausible deniability one way of achieving that is using
Off The Record (OTR). Have a look at http://www.cypherpunks.ca/otr for

Quite likely, which is why my suggestion for preventing this is service

Since you appear to be using it for work, and you are mailing from an
oracle.com address, I would suggest that you speak with your IT support
department. It isn't clear from your email which service you are using.
Pidgin is a multi-protocol client, the service you use is not under the

unpaid assistance on this support mailing list.

Building Pidgin 2.8.0 on Fedora 14 fails

2011-06-10 Thread Brian Morrison
The error message (the relevant part anyway) is:

gevolution.c: In function 'get_config_frame':
gevolution.c:450:36: error: 'GTK_POLICY_AUTO' undeclared (first use in this
function)
gevolution.c:450:36: note: each undeclared identifier is reported only once for
each function it appears in
make[4]: *** [gevolution.lo] Error 1
make[4]: *** Waiting for unfinished jobs

I would have expected this to work ok on a recent Fedora. I've built
many of the recent Pidgin versions throught the 2.6 and 2.7 series and
it has been fine until now.

Any ideas what the problem might be? I took the 2.7.11 src rpm from
Fedora's Koji packages and edited the spec file a little to remove the
unnecessary patch and fix up the version.

Is Trillian not simply a multi-protocol client like Pidgin? If so then
you simply add you contacts as AIM, MSN, Yahoo etc. contacts.

I think you can get the notifo plugin from here, you need the win32
version:

https://code.google.com/p/gtk-ftischhauser-notifo/downloads/list

So, download it, then extract the dll you need. Put it in the Pidgin
plugins directory, it will be in the Program files hierarchy, you'll
need to follow it down until you get to where you want. Then restart
pidgin and open the plugin preferences, enable the Notifo plugin and
configure it (I've never done this, I'm describing a generic plugin
configuration sequence).

Does this help?

Blame MS for forever changing the protocol which makes compatibility
more difficult to maintain. Have you tried the MSN-Pecan plugin?
It might be better for you than the supported MSN version?

You can select the localisations and dictionaries you want during
installation, if you didn't select anything then you can re-run the
installation and reselect this. Also worth installing debug symbols to
aid in debugging if there are any problems in use.

Well I certainly have no such folder, and as you will have seen the OP
asked why he wasn't seeing spell-check options. If you don't select
the correct options during the installation, they this is what happens.
Once installed then there are ways to enable the spell-checking support.

Well I'm sure that you would get more recognition for that view if you
replied to the list address rather than directly to me and hence
increased your audience. It's very easy to change the address, even if
your MUA doesn't do it for you.

I use Pidgin on both Windows and Linux, I have working spell checking in
both cases, installed and configured with essentially no effort beyond
a few package selections on Fedora and a couple of clicks on Windows.
Adding plugins is actually clunkier on Windows, but that's because the
additional plugins are not part of Pidgin itself and creating an
installer is much more difficult on Windows than creating a package is
in most Linux distros.

Your password is administered via whatever IM service you are using via
Pidgin. Pidgin itself has no passwords, so you will need to reset them

This is not possible, Pidgin support is provided on a public mailing

If you have installed it on another PC and not set up your accounts
again then it will be unable to connect because it has no information
on where to connect to and what credentials to present to the IM
network server.

You will need to recreate your account(s) to make it work.

I would suggest looking at the debug output (accessible via the help

either post the details here (remove any passwords etc) or ask the
people that administer your XMPP server.

One other question, does it still work on the previous PC you used?

Also, please reply to the list address, not directly to me, you will

You will have to contact the administrator of the server in question
and ask them to remove the account so that you can recreate it,
alternatively they might be able to reset the password.

Is this a commercial service or an in-house company facility? If the
former there should be a way of resetting the password probably via a

It is entirely possible that Pidgin is incorrectly configured, did you
even look at the localisation and spell checking options as regarding
Turkish/Kurdish on installation?

One other thing, Pidgin is written and provided as free software. Go
and look up what that implies, and what freedoms it provides. You are
free to use it, change it as you please provided that you respect the
licence Pidgin is released under, and as an extra special favour you
get to keep the pieces when it breaks.

This list is to give support provided by volunteers for software
written by people who do it out of the goodness of their hearts rather
than for any profit motive.

In the meantime, I expect you can easily resolve your complaint by
looking at this page http://pidgin.im/about/ where you will see that
both Turkish and Kurdish are listed as supported languages, meaning
that it is possible to configure your system to use the one you prefer
although you may need to adjust your system settings. You can find help
with this here:

http://developer.pidgin.im/wiki/Using%20Pidgin#MiscellaneousWindows

The first two questions and answers in this section will tell you how
to select Turkish as your language.

In future I suggest you moderate the tone of your requests (actually
it's a demand, these are usually ignored here) because as I said above
Pidgin is provided to you to use as you wish and being impolite and
unpleasant to those who are helping you out of altruism is generally
regarded very dimly in the civilised world.

It's symptomatic of the problem that someone has bothered to translate
the installer strings for Kurdish but that no Turks appear to be
concerned enough to do the same for their language.

In what way is it broken for you? I have both a .uk address and
contacts with .uk addresses using MSN and it works for me without
problems. The account and the buddies were originally set up some time
ago, so it may be a server-side change that MSN has made. MS likes to
break things for 3rd party clients, so it's par for the course.

MXit seem to have abandoned providing support via the Pidgin support
list, I would suggest that you contact them directly and while you're
at it you could remind them that they promised they would support their
plugin here after the plugin began to be distributed as part of the
official Pidgin package.

Clicking the link for the Windows version (I use Linux, so get offered
source from the front page) gives me the correct pidgin-2.9.0.exe file

This leads to being offered the correct files for me, although I had a
short-lived DNS lookup failure initially.

I think this is something weird at your end, but I can't offer much
idea as to what it would be. Have you checked for any viruses or
trojans on your system or perhaps tried using a different browser to
start the download?

You need to set up an account in Pidgin using XMPP. In the account tab
of the Account properties you enter your username as shown in your from
address to this list, and the domain as gmail.com, then you can enter
your password and a Resource string describing what you want (I use
'Home' for instance, but anything will do).

On the advanced tab I have connect port as 5222 and connect server as
talk.google.com which I believe is all that is necessary.

Try that and ask again if it doesn't work for you.

Pidgin does not provide any service, that is handled by whoever you are
using for messaging, AIM, MSN etc.

You need to deal with them rather than ask here, we cannot help you
with password/username issues.

Is this a function requiring a plugin? Did you enable the plugin from
the Tools->Plugins menu? Do you have the privileges to copy the plugin
dlls to the Program Files/Pidgin/plugins directory?

Will try to help further if you can respond to these questions?

OK, well first please would you reply to the mailing list address, not
directly to me (no Cc: needed either thanks) as then this exchange is
archived so that others can see the answers to their questions in the
list archives.

If you have no dlls in the plugins directory (actually check that there
are none in the Program Files (x86)\pidgin\plugins directory as Pidgin
on Windows is a 32 bit program and will have installed there) then
this is why it isn't working for you.

If there is still nothing there, that is puzzling as Pidgin will have
put some dlls there for the plugins that come with the basic program,
but that could be down to the (x86) part of the path as I mentioned
above.

What you need to do is to download the zip file with the plugin pack
dlls contained within it (you probably have this already), then extract
those files into the above mentioned directory and restart Pidgin. Then
you will need to open the plugin list using Tools->Plugins and enable
and configure those plugins that you wish to have available.

HTH.

We live in hope that we might become smart one day, it's just a shame
that so few of those that are stand for election.
