Depending on the operating system, there's probably a way to search for

First, you'll likely get more help if you post with a subject other than
"Urgent" - I mean really, is it really URGENT you get an IM client
working on your phone?

Second, the date is off on your computer, or whatever device you post to

the subject "Urgent" is likely to be deleted, unread.

Lastly, You'll need to contact the mxit regarding problems with their

Deleting the program and starting over has nothing to do with your problem.

Typically, if there's a major revision to a protocol, a non compliant
client would cease to work - when you are unable to connect with a
protocol, and the answer is "You need to upgrade", that's a good hint
that the developers of Pidgin had to upgrade the client protocol. If
Pidgin were using a 6.x or 5.x protocol, I'm fairly certain it would not
connect to the AIM servers.

Yahoo Account Locked?

Pidgin 2.7.1. on XP.

Every time I re-launch pidgin (either after a reboot or after putting my
computer into suspend, I get the "Account locked: Too many failed login
attempts. Logging into the Yahoo website may fix this." Not sure what
other information I can provide. I tried logging out of the Yahoo IM in
Pidgin, waiting a few minutes, and logging back in, it's fine. So I
can't say if it's a 'time' issue (ie only if I'm logged out for more
than minutes) or what it is.

I AM still logged into Yahoo Mail, I can even click around, but it still
says to log into the Yahoo website. I actually have to log out then log
back in.

Any ideas? Would a trace or anything provide any more detail?

Thanks.

vulnerabilities. In the case of Pidgin, we add features and
functionality, and fix bugs, more rapidly than that.

And, but I don't think this is as much an issue now as it was a few
years back, the 'owner' of the IM service (ie Yahoo, AOL, etc) kept
trying to 'lock out' third party apps from being able to communicate
using their servers. I remember almost a weekly 'forced' update simply
because say Yahoo essentially locked out version say 1.2 by implementing
a small change, forcing the developers of the third party IM to figure
out what the change is to then patch their program.

Not sure if this happens as much now as it did 'back in the day'.

Re: People don't read the mail list

2010-05-18 Thread Evan Platt
After 10+ years of technical support, I can tell you it doesn't matter
where you put it, people don't read it. Places I worked at that had
IVR's would add a "If you are experiencing problem,
press 3 now." No one pressed 3. When someone then said "I'm getting this
problem", we'd subtly ask "Did you hear the option on the phone menu for
the solution? It would have saved you ten minutes on hold." and the
answer would always be something like "Oh, I don't listen to those
stupid things".

I mean, the homepage even had "ICQ/AIM Login problems? Go to Advanced
Options, and uncheck." How many people STILL said "I went to
www.pidgin.im and downloaded the latest version" (thereby basically
admitting they read the message)?

On 5/18/2010 2:26 AM, David Balazic wrote:

Neither do they check the archives.

So how about serving them the relevant information instead?

Currently it seems to be:
  - flash issue on Windows
  - theme changing
  - maybe one or two more I forgot

This could be put on one (or more) of the following places:
  - home page (it already has a similar purpose line or two, currently saying:
Pidgin 2.7.0 is out with fixes for AIM, ICQ, and Yahoo! JAPAN login and a bunch
of new features! )

  - About window of pidgin, before the mail list address, somewhere around "Helpful
Resources"

  - same as above, but just a button or link , titled like "(Current) Known issues
(- read this first)"
linking to a page listing the few most common problems with the current
version (or the version
the user is actually running, even if just suggesting an upgrade to latest)
This could also be a menu item in the Help menu.
Displayed as:
  - regular web page, using the system browser
or maybe:
 - displayed inline in the about dialog or a special "Known issues" dialog

Hopefully this would reduce the amount of repeat questions ont the list.

I'm attempting the upgrade on Windows XP, and during the install, I get:

(That's a manual typing of the error, so if I made a typo, that's likely
my fault.) Copy and pasting that URL into Firefox does nothing (although
not sure if it should).

On almost every protocol I can think of, you can only log on once. If

you open up Yahoo Messenger, then log in, you're logged in via Yahoo IM.
If you then open pidgin and log into Yahoo, it will log out your session

And if the OP's job is handling export compliance, they shouldn't be
limited by a firewall that prevents things as silly as visiting a
website for a product you need to determine compliance of.

But then again, I have a hard time feeling sorry for Dell.

The company I worked at bought was responsible for a WiFi installation
in China. Two of the Dell devices failed. We had the hardest time
getting any help from Dell with regards to certifications to ship the
replacements to China. We actually shipped the items to China I want to
say 3 times - each time returned back to us, denied at customs.

We even tried to have Dell ship FROM China TO China, and they were
unable to do that.

And me personally? Ordered a number of items from Dell's web site.
Decent price, sale type markdown. They then claim the price was a error,
and offer to sell it to me at a different price. We're not talking an
obvious "error" - say a digital camera with a regular price of $299
being offered at $229, then saying "Oops, that was a mistake. We'll sell
it to you for $259."

We call that Bait and Switch.

So sorry for the OT rant, but Dell gets no sympathy for me.

Sounds more to me like a sales droid needs to get some compliance
information and wants others to do their legwork while they reap the
commissions.

Remove buddies (Was Re: missing messages)

2010-04-19 Thread Evan Platt

Please don't thread hijack. If your question isn't related to the
thread, create a new topic with a new subject. Thanks.

What do you mean by re-file buddies? Move to a different group?

Based on your question, you're removing a buddy, reboot, and the buddy
then re-appears, and moving a buddy from say group "Friends" to group
"Coworkers", reboot and they're back in Friends?

Does this happen if you merely exit Pidgin then reopen it (no reboot)?

What protocol, and what version of Pidgin?

I'm curious, did anyone else get the below spam also to their e-mail (ie

given to one company, never used to send e-mail, etc. So basically, I've
only typed it twice ever - once to put it as an alias in my mail server,
and second to sign in when I made a purchase at a fairly reputable
place. Contact me off list if you also got a copy, and we can see if
perhaps you also signed up where I did. Don't want to go blasting their

If you're at a former Sun (now Oracle) Campus, using the WiFi, and

The Pidgin support e-mail address is a 'public' group address which goes

If what you said actually IS the password for the accounts you just

publicly archived mailing list.

What do I need to do to get this corrected?

I don't know, you'd have to ask one of the developers. Certainly there's
some logic where as easy as that sounds, it wouldn't work. (ie what
comes to mind is maybe there's a reason you WOULDN'T want to uncheck use
client login, and to automatically 'uncheck' it upon error would break
some other functionality.

Why not add a feature that detects that and changed the "client login"

Rosalinda:

You don't have a "Pidgin account". Pidgin is the software you use to
access any of a number of different IM Protocols. Yahoo, AOL, ICQ, etc.

How / where did you create this account? If you don't have an existing
account for whatever protocol you want to use, you need to create it via
generally a website, ie if you want an ICQ account and don't have one,
you need to go to www.icq.com and create an account. You can't create an

Re: Announce: Pidgin v2.6.5 released

2010-01-11 Thread Evan Platt
My copy on Windows (I believe it was 2.6.4) popped up an alert telling
me 2.6.5 has been released.

Better than a announce list, IMHO. :)

Control-F should work too from the main Pidgin Window.

And, require someone to join the list prior to posting. I'm all for it
being as simple as possible, ie you send an e-mail message to the
list. you get a bounce back telling you that you are posting to a
OPEN LIST that anyone can read and join, and that SPAM is not
tolerated. And if you understand these 'rulers' click and you
will be subscribed to the list and your message will be posted.

This will solve a few problems:

One is the (granted, few) pump and dump spammers.
Two is the people who don't understand this is a list, and ANYONE can
join this list.

I recall a month of two ago someone was under the assumption his
questions for help were sent securely to a few 'high level developers'
and even threatened legal action if his posts didn't get removed from
any and all archives of this list.

If I remember he kept e-mailing (off list) one of the members
DEMANDING the member remove his posts.

Just my .02 :)

This was posted to the support list earlier this week:

Subject: Migrating developer.pidgin.im
From: Mark Doliner
To: de...@pidgin.im, support@pidgin.im

Our hosting provider, NetworkRedux, will be moving "imperial," the
virtual machine that hosts developer.pidgin.im to different hardware
that will hopefully perform better for us. The scheduled time for
this migration is 10:00AM PDT on Wednesday of this week. If anyone
suspects there will be problems with this, or if you think it would be
better if the scheduled time was changed, please let me know.

This should not affect "rock," the virtual machine that hosts
http://pidgin.im/, mtn.pidgin.im, these mailing lists, is our primary
mail server, and is our primary DNS server.

It started working last night for me. Good feature, didn't know it existed. :)

is not logged in. This was possible to do in the past as I have used this
feature however it seems to be doing nothing but throwing errors now :(

Is this some sort of plugin? Or is there something else? Unless it
truly is broken (I've never tried it), I tried adding myself as a AIM
buddy, with the above mentioned format - +1## , and it shows
online, but I get Unable to send message: Not logged in

I'm guessing for this to work (this would be awesome BTW), the cell
phone needs a AIM client? But then why not AIM the AIM username?

Good afternoon everyone,
We've been slowly migrating our users worldwide off of the Windows
platform, but had a bit of a problem using our own custom Jabber
server with Pigin. We have multiple domains, so we use fully
qualified email addresses as the username, thus:

bob@mydomain.com

...would be the full username. Of course, everytime we do that,
Pigin pulls the domain out and pops it into the domain field,
regardless if that field is already full.

Anyone know of a workaround so that I can get an ampersand as part
of the username? Thank you!

Unfotunately I don't know the answer to your question, but to
clarify, you mean an at sign, right? An ampersand is a different symbol - & .

state the 'warning' in the same location as the Support List address. :-\

Good point.

Your MUA is set to Open Email showing HTML? =-O

As little as possible. Eudora. I know of no way to NOT have it do it,
unless anyone here knows?

All the "Disable" options are checked, but there's really only "Allow
HTML executables", and that's disabled.

Still, this is also an excellent suggestion. If screenshots are truly
necessary then perhaps someone should 'approach' the individual directly
and solicit them. :-\ If for no other reason than to reduce the
bandwidth required to download HTML Email which counts against those
with pre-set limits. [think laptop/netbook dongles with 5GB/month maximums]

Re: Facebook and Skype and Plugins

2009-08-27 Thread Evan Platt

At 01:24 PM 8/27/2009, you wrote:

And two people have already told you this and where to find them!

Two questions this thread brings up, I don't know if it's open for
discussion or just a question for the mods..

The common 'protocol' is to reply to the group.

But - correct me if I'm wrong - if a person simply looks in the help
file and e-mails support@pidgin.im, they aren't subscribed to the
list. So when someone replies to the list, that person will never see
the reply(ies) - correct? Should this perhaps be modified? Maybe not
allow a person to e-mail support@pidgin.im without - at the very
least, getting an e-mali back telling them they need to subscribe
otherwise they won't see replies?

This would also solve the problem that's come up quite a few times
recently of "OMG! I sent my user ID and password to a mailing list!"
or "What?! This message was confidential!"

Second question - can we disable HTML - rather allowing people to
post HTML? There's no reason (IMHO) a 1 line message of "I can't
connect to the XMITT server" should contain 200 lines of HTML
garbage, a JPG embedded with the company image, etc

Thanks. :)
