It seems plausible that it is somehow possible to hide this

1. Related to your privacy setting and whether the other person is on

2. Some other setting that Pidgin doesn't support changing

No worries. It just so happens that we have a FAQ entry concerning this.
http://developer.pidgin.im/wiki/Installing%20Pidgin#IinstalledthelatestversionbuttheAboutboxsaysImstillusingtheoldversion

The short answer is: Make sure you only have one version install. The
full answer from the FAQ is:
If you compiled the new version yourself, it's likely you had a
distribution package (RPM, deb, ebuild, etc.) installed prior to
building but did not remove it. You should remove that package using
your package manager.

If you compiled the old version yourself, run make uninstall from the
old source tree. If you didn't keep that around but you remember the
exact arguments you gave the configure script, you can download the
source for the old release, configure it exactly the same, then run
make uninstall.

So if I understand the help/faq correctly, in a nutshell - none of the major
IMs (Yahoo, MSN, Facebook) use SSL security other than to authenticate the

I think that's more accurate that not. I think logins for AIM,
Facebook, Google Talk, ICQ, MSN, and Yahoo are all either encrypted
with SSL/TLS or use some sort of digest such that your password is not
sent in the clear.

Full encryption of all data should happen for Google Talk and also
maybe for AIM/ICQ (see the settings on the Advanced tab when changing
the settings for your IM account).

Aside from some great effort that casual/novice users are unlike to make,
things such as SILC is the only option?

I guess I should point out that if you're concerned about ISPs being
forced to log IMs, the encryption you're asking about probably isn't
going to help you much. The encryption discussed above only deals
with encrypting traffic from your computer to the IM provider. At
which point the IM provider can log your IMs all day long.

If you want your communication to be private then you need an
end-to-end encryption solution, like OTR.

[The republicans in congress are soon proposing that ISPs be required to
retain 2 years of logs for all customer logins, email/IM and IP
destinations.  Although casual net use wasn't a concern until now, I'm
starting to lock down my communications with HTTPS.]

I feel compelled to state that I think this will never happen. It's
kind of an absurd requirement. This would be a tremendous burden upon
a lot of people, and the gain is marginal at best. If people know
their communication is being monitored then they'll start using
end-to-end encryption, in which case the monitoring is useless and
you're just inconveniencing everyone. I also can't imagine people
being ok with this from a I live in a free country point of view.

Re: cannot unsubscribe

2010-11-30 Thread Mark Doliner
The most likely reason for this problem is that you're not using the
correct email address to unsubscribe. Our mailing list software
doesn't provide any distinction between you tried to unsubscribe an
email address that was subscribed and you tried to unsubscribe an
email address that was not subscribed.

This sometimes means looking at the headers of the emails that you
receive in order to determine the address that the mailing list is
sending to.

I'm probably in favor of the latter (displaying a message about

I'm very much in favor of the former. Otherwise I'm going to get an
awful lot of popups. Keep in mind my Pidgin is open 24/7. Rather than
a popup, what about an inline error message, like what is currently
 used to indicate an update?

Note that the update checking is only performed at most once a day.

I suppose we could suppress the UI and only display information in the
debug log.  The problem with this approach is that the user has no
indication that the release notification is not working properly.

Sorry, I didn't mean to show a popup, just to have a minidialog
similar to the real release notification indicating that we were
unable to check for updates with the same link to the website (which
may or may not work in their browser, but at least if they click it,
they'll see the message from their annoying firewall).

The ideal behavior in my mind is to disable the plugin, show a
minidialog with an error message (and a link to the website or
whatever) and a re-enable plugin button.

between entries with the same mnemonic, I guess it's less wrong).  Added
 in 90c2a6492b85a718acbed863733e736cea512906.

I agree it's wrong, and I realized that when I committed it, but I
don't think it's less wrong than having no mnemonic - and it's possible
to cycle between entries both by pressing 'tab' and by repeatedly
pressing the mnemonic (which cycles only between those that share the
 mnemonic).

Obviously a more correct fix would be to push the mnemonics down to the
prpls, but just doing that with '_' indicators would cause problems for
other UIs/toolkits that don't use the same notation, so...

Does Adium already have to strip out underscores from some of our strings?

I almost feel like the choice of the mnemonic should be automatic, by
GTK. But I guess having a human decide the mnemonic probably results
in a more natural choice. Another possible solution is to have a
plaintext string and a mnemonicized string, but that sounds like over
engineering.

I'm not familiar with this particular issue, but Pidgin should never

I found that the community repositories have the 2.6.6 as the most
recent and found some random repository that had 2.7.1.

I installed Pidgin and libpurple 2.7.1 from that repository.
I tried to start Pidgin and got the following error message:

Any idea where the problem lies and when the community repositories are

Hi Alexander. We don't maintain the community repository for

I received confirmation from an AIM partner that they are about to shut down

 Will this affect pidgin?

I guess it's hard to say without more detail. Short answer is probably not.

Long answer is:
* It seems extremely unlikely that AOL will stop using the ENTIRE
protocol used by 5.x and 6.x clients, because I believe the major of
this protocol is shared by 7.x clients.
* It's possible AOL will stop allowing the old auth scheme (BUCP aka
MD5) to be used. But Pidgin supports a newer auth scheme called
clientLogin (I think it's the default now), so this wouldn't harm us
too much... it would just mean users wouldn't have to auth schemes to
choose from in the event that clientLogin stops working.
* It's possible AOL will stop allowing us to use clientLogin.
Unfortunately AOL shut down their OpenAIM program, so clientLogin
isn't really a blessed method of authentication anymore.
* A combination of the last 2 bullet points would be bad. It would
mean Pidgin couldn't log in anymore.

Hi Richard. It's possible to sign into a .Mac AIM account using

When I was 16 I was involved in the gaim project the first time. There I

 available in the
 Copyright file.

Now I'm going to apply for the Google Sommer of Code Program and support
 pidgin project.
I'm using pidgin now for 7 years mostly for ICQ  everyday (because ICQ is
 very popular in
my region). Therefore I know about many feautures that the Original ICQ
 Client supports
 and the Pidgin ICQ-Implementation doesn't.

Last week I started a survey (with 129 persons) to see which things are most
 important to
the people and have to be implemented first. Here are their suggestions
 ordered by popularity:

 - About every 4th person complained about the file transfer problem between
 other clients.
 - Many people want the old block function back because in the past it
 people got blocked
couldn't see one online but were able to write one. The new function is
 useful but removing the
old function is wrong. The people need both of the functions.
 - Webcam and voice chat should be implemented
 - Flash games
 - Authorization problems: after the authorization sometimes the people are
two times in my list and if I remove one of them they both disapear
 - Status-Messages doesn't work between other clients
 - Invisible status doesn't work sometimes

The other suggestions are good but not so popular like these mentioned
above. Therefore I picked out these themes:
Filetransfer, block-function, Autorization, Status Messages and if there is
 time the invisible status.

I want to fix this things between May 24th and August 9th - that means in 11
 Weeks.
Maybe you have some instructions or hints to me? Are there things that are
something like undevelopable in 11 weeks? :-D
 I would be glad! :-)

I think that's a great list, and definitely feasible in 11 weeks. You
could possible add more to it, but I'm not sure what. Maybe better
handling of character encoding for offline messages.

Also, you may want to look at last summer's privacy improvement
project: http://developer.pidgin.im/wiki/GSoC2009/PrivacyRewrite It
hoped to improve the usability of blocking vs. invisibility for ICQ.

Pidgin 2.6.6 has been released

Pidgin 2.6.6 has been released.
It includes fixes for 3 security problems: http://pidgin.im/news/security/
ChangeLog at http://developer.pidgin.im/wiki/ChangeLog
A few downloads at http://sourceforge.net/projects/pidgin/files/Pidgin/2.6.6/
No Windows builds yet, but I'm sure one of our glamouriffic Windows
developers will create one soon.

Translators: We tagged late Monday night to give our packagers a day
or two to create packages for their distributions using the 2.6.6
tarball, so if you submitted a translation on Tuesday or Wednesday,
unfortunately it didn't make it into this release. Sorry about
that... the security problems caused us to have a slightly rushed
schedule.

Developers: After tagging I merged im.pidgin.pidgin.mxit and
im.pidgin.pidgin.next.minor into trunk.

Hey Jenny. It sounds like you're trying to create a new AIM screen
name? It's actually not possible to do this using Pidgin. You'll
have to fill out the form at https://new.aol.com/productsweb/. Once
that's done you can Add an Account to Pidgin and type in the screen

LGPLv2 or later. There are also smatterings of 3-cause BSD, maybe

Hmm, are you using a Finch binary which was compiled for your

I believe the problem is that the DNS SRV record failed (possibly

You could try to figure out why the DNS SRV lookup failed, or you

I'm not sure. I don't think I've touched that part of the code. You'll
just have to look and see, or wait for someone else to jump in with an
 answer.

Some time ago I tried to add a user which was in the Licq-client-list to
Pidgin (which used the server list). At this time a new authorization
request was necessary. I guess the ICQ servers require this
authorization if you add a user to the server-list.

Yeah, this will probably result in the ICQ servers asking each buddy
for authorization. I believe the protocol does have some concept of
importing a non-server side list of buddies and not asking for
authorization, but Pidgin/libpurple does not support this. It also
may not be documented anywhere. And it may not be possible.

Is licq capable of using a server-side buddy list? If so, does it
have a way to import your old buddies? If so, that is probably your
best option.

Why does Pidgin at all silently (at least for 99% of all users, who
don't read the output of --debug) delete buddies?

AFAIK, it's *respecting* the list from the server. This ensures that if
someone makes changes using another client (possibly on another
machine), their changes are reflected in Pidgin. I think our MSN plugin
still prompts users for any discrepancies.

FWIW, your same 99% of all users aren't going to be manually editing
 the blist.xml file. ;)

Hehe, yes. The changed-by-other-client reason was clear. But what if due
to another reason some users vanish? Hmm, probably ICQ clients now
always rely on the server list.

Yes, we trust the server list for AIM and ICQ. The local copy is
useful for storing additional metadata about buddies (the alias you
assign to them, the last-seen timestamp, etc.)

As MXit will be supporting and maintaining this plugin, we would look at
each patch individually and decide based on its merits and our knowledge
of the MXit platform if it should be applied or not.

In regards to the patch mentioned above, we would vote against it.

We kind of left this discussion dangling and I'd like to try to
summarize a few things. Please correct me if anyone feels my
perception is flawed. From my point of view I feel like there are two
roadblocks preventing the inclusion of the MXit protocol plugin into
the upstream libpurple source tree.

1. I'm not sure users will be able to get the help they need from the
Pidgin/libpurple project in order to properly use MXit. Some support
folks the MXit team have answered some users questions on our support
mailing list (thanks guys!), but there are also a few unanswered
questions from the past month. I don't think this issue is very
important, especially considering the low volume of questions, and I
think we could improve things over time.

2. This email thread, including the emails quoted above, seem to
indicate some differences in opinion between MXit and Pidgin/libpurple
developers. I'm not sure how severe these differences in opinion are.
Some Pidgin developers are ok with displaying advertisements that
benefit MXit, since MXit created the plugin. Other Pidgin developers
have the opinion that the MXit code is GPL, why wouldn't we rip out
the advertisements when we distribute it?

I recognize that the Pidgin project isn't the easiest open source
project to work with--we're a bit closed to outside influences and we
tend to hold Stallmanistic[1] ideals about free software. We also
tend to give our developers free reign over our source tree. Once
we've vetted a new contributor and given him commit access, we're
basically ok with him changing whatever he wants. (We do of course
review each other's changes and object when we see something we don't
like.) But what would happen if one of our developers desired to
remove the advertisements from the MXit protocol plugin? I would hate
to see a tug of war between a current Pidgin developer and an MXit
developers, where one person removes the advertisement and the other
person ads it back.

If the MXit developers would like the plugin to retain the
advertisements mentioned in this thread and the plugin were included
with libpurple then it seems this difference of opinion could strain
our relationship quite a bit. Hearing other people's thoughts on this
would be helpful here, but it sounds like it will be difficult to
distribute the MXit plugin alongside the official Pidgin binary :-(

-Mark

Describing him as a free software zealot isn't unreasonable.

Yes, all client-accessible history is stored locally. It is possible
to change your account username/login without creating a new account
(you must be offline), but I believe access to the current set of chat
history will not still be available. The chat history is saved on
disk based on the username of the account. For example,
~/.purple/logs/jabber/markdoli...@example.com/myfri...@example.com/logfile.txt

I suspect that you could rename the directories for your account and
for your buddies accounts and the logs would become accessible again
from within Pidgin. I believe the logs themselves also contain the
names of your account and of your buddies accounts, which might be a
little misleading in the UI, but shouldn't cause any problems.

If you decide not to rename the directories, you can always access the
old logs with either a text editor or a web browser (they're stored

As long as you're simply using the Pidgin application, and not trying

Just a few tips:
* Users do not have to be subscribed to this mailing list in order to
post to it. When replying to a user's email please ensure the user's
email address is listed in the To field.
* Replies to this mailing list by default go to the user who sent the

on changing it.
* You're encouraged to use Reply All or Reply List for the
majority of your responses so that future generations of Pidgin users

However, it may make sense for you to email the user only when sending
private information, sending off-topic information, if the user is

Hi Leonardo. That's a bit odd. So it crashes immediately after
starting it? You can try starting it by running pidgin -n from a
command line, this will prevent your accounts from connecting
immediately. Then you can connect each account one at a time and see
if one of them is causing a problem. You can also try starting with
pidgin -d and looking at the output before Pidgin crashes. You may
also want to try disabling any 3rd party plugins or accounts. If it's
still crashing feel free to file a new ticket at
http://developer.pidgin.im/newticket And please include a backtrace
from the crash. There is information on obtaining a backtrace here:

2.6.1: This is 2.6.0 with an important security fix and some fixed

shouldn't need to do anything special--your settings and accounts
 should all be imported automatically.

Thanks for your quick responses. Since the settings and all were not
imported from GAIM when I started (all I get on Pidgin startup is a

distribution file) simply dumped the program files into the
appropriate places and did not run an install routine. So I'm back to

 copied/converted/moved/whatever from GAIM.

In a regular Pidgin install routine, would the files simply be copied
 from .gaim to .pidgin?

I think it's a bit more complicated than that, but I don't remember
the specifics.

I note that there is presently a /root/.gaim
directory but not a /root/.pidgin directory.

The new directory is ./root/purple Also, it's generally suggested
that you use root only when needed, and to log in as a normal user the
rest of the time. Using root makes it more likely that an accidental
or malicious command could break something on your system.

 I'm presuming that I will
need to move the data over manually, but don't know if importing is a
simple drag-and-drop or if there is a file format conversion involved.
Where do I go from here? If someone's able and willing to walk me thru

*When the segfault occurred while running:

 Adding buddy...
(20:08:00) oscar: ssi: adding buddy 401787217 to group Buddies
(20:08:00) oscar: Requesting ICQ alias for 401787217(20:08:00) oscar:

Program received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault.

I also attached the full source code of the program, as simplified as
possible (the only difference is that my password is replaced with
 PASSWORD).  I compile it with:

 gcc `pkg-config --libs glib-2.0` -I /usr/include/libpurple/
 -I /usr/include/glib-2.0/ -I /usr/lib/glib-2.0/include/ test.c -lpurple
 -o test

 ...if that makes any difference

Let me know if you need any more information.

I think you may need to pass parameters to the callback functions.
The user_data variable passed to your request_input function and the
message text. See the bottom half of input_response_cb() in
pidgin/gtkresponse.c for an example. Specifically:

((PurpleRequestInputCb)data-cbs[id])(data-user_data, value);
