RE: so slow

2010-01-05 Thread David Balazic
If you start Pidgin, then exit and start it again (like in 10 seconds
or less), how long dow it take?

On my system, the first start is 10-20 seconds (depends, I did not
make an accurate measurement), but the second is instantenous (1 second
or less). On first start the GTK libs have to be loaded from the disk
and they are quite large. (and on the second try they are cached or
even already loaded)

Also the auto-connect that others mentioned should nt make a difference.
The Buddy List window appears first and only then it starts connecting.

Regards,
David

Re: so slow

2010-01-04 Thread Michael Secord
I've used Pidgin for years on XP and Win7, and each time, Pidgin loads
up from closed to a BL window (with no accounts auto-connecting which
WILL slow things down like mentioned before, but not because of the
application itself) in less than 10 seconds consistently. If you use the
-n switch for the app, you'll disable auto-connecting upon startup and
thus will see the app load faster. Keep in mind that the issue you are
seeing is dependent on your environment, accounts, and plugins as well.

Nothing in the debug log is abnormal - the missing stuff isn't
necessarily supposed to be there.

I'm not sure where your missing 19 seconds are - is Windows still in

Reinnstall the missing software or reinstall Pidgin. Personally I'd use
a registry cleaner (Piriform has a program that has a good one that I
trust) to clean out any bad entries, then do the reinstall of the
missing software and/or Pidgin.

There is no reason to think that anything is not installed correctly.

You might be able to step through with a debugger to try to see where
the delay is, alternatively you could try to use Process Monitor
(http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896645.aspx) to get
a log of what is happening during that startup timeframe.

Why do you think that 15-20 seconds is a long time? Seems like very
little time to me for a complex application to load and initialise.

Well, Pidgin loads even quicker then that for me and I have several
plugins installed. Pidgin isn't that complex, though. OOo takes 15-30
seconds to load for me and that's way more complex then Pidgin will ever
dream of being (I hope).

What evidence do you have that it is Pidgin that is slow and not
something in the network? OpenOffice is really not a good application
to compare Pidgin with. With network applications there are lots of
steps in making a network connection that can cause the application to
stall and wait. How many network connections are you making? How
solid is your DNS? Is your ISP clueless about routing? Etc.

In the end though, if it is only slow on start up, then why do you
care? For me pidgin starts up automatically as part of my login
process, connects to 5 IM servers and is up for 10-12 hours. Spending
an extra 10 seconds at start up is really not worth worrying about.

Good points, but I connect to about 10 accounts, via an anonymous proxy
relay service (SOCKS5) for all but one and it still loads up quicker
then for the OP (and I load it up via a batch file that enables a
debugging log). Connecting, though, is a different story though and I
don't count that as part of load up time. I consider load up time from
the time I click on the quick launch icon to the time I see my buddy
list window.
