Revisiting this... regarding the lack of 64bit build on linux.
mozilla.dev.apps.seamonkey is added, but follow-ups set to
mozilla.support.seamonkey as I think it's time that the issue be
debated/discussed.

Why is it that the 'nightly' builds of SeaMonkey generally include a
64bit build, but the final releases do not?

Examples:

[seamonkey-2.1a1pre.en-US.linux-x86_64.tar.bz2]

[seamonkey-2.0.2pre.en-US.linux-x86_64.tar.bz2 04-Jan-2010 02:13 14M]
[seamonkey-2.0.3pre.en-US.linux-x86_64.tar.bz2 09-Jan-2010 00:53 14M]

Yet:
http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/
 http://releases.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/seamonkey/releases/

only offers this:
seamonkey-2.0.1.tar.bz2 06-Dec-2009 11:2213M

In the past the devs (Kairo primarily) have mumbled statements to the
effect that 64bit SeaMonkey releases aren't available and require
contributor builds. Why is this, they are available in the nightlies etc?

Here's a key example of why such builds are necessary; I load up a new
64bit laptop with linux. I load the standard seamonkey-2.0.1.tar.bz2 and
no, *zero*, *none* plugins are available on the system. However, if I
load the seamonkey-2.0.3pre.en-US.linux-x86_64.tar.bz2 on the exact same
system without making any changes to the ~/.mozilla folder, most of the
plugins fire right up - including a 32bit flash plugin that works in
Firefox. 64bit flash & java issues are for another post.

So here is the question for the devs & primarily for Kairo: why is it
that the 64bit linux builds are *always* available in the nightlies, but
never on the final releases?

Here is a real-word-right-now example of incompatibility with Seamonkey.

Earlier today I tried to sell an item on eBay but they use some goofy
Javascript that doesn't work with Seamonkey. As a result, I am unable to
add pictures to the listing, or save the listing as a template for later
use.

Sites that are not compatible with Seamonkey are rare, but make me sad
none the less.

I tried switching from Seamonkey to Firefux+Thunderturd about six months
ago, and switched back after trying to deal with it for 90 days.
Couldn't stand the stupid-user-izms.

That said, I have no plans of giving up Seamonkey any time soon. Though
a combination of work and home, I use Seamonkey on GNU/Linux, OS X, and
Windows on a daily basis.

Just noticed that if one opens a new Tab in Mail/News from the
Account/Server "home" page, the snap setting for the Preview pane is not

Preview pane displayed, the position/state of the window is remembered
and opened correctly in the new Tab.

Shouldn't SM remember where you set the Preview pane in both cases?

The Gecko 1.8 branch was abandoned by the Mozilla Core devs a long, long
time ago. Only security and stability patches were then backported to
that branch, not by Mozilla but by Linux distributors with long lived
branches, but even that source of bug fixes seem to have dried up in the
middle of 2009. Without a SeaMonkey 2.0 to migrate our users to.
SeaMonkey would have died on the wine before the end of 2009.

That's why the original plan to release SeaMonkey 2.0 in sync with
Thunderbird 3.0 became fatal when Mozilla Messaging kept pushing back
their release schedules, and pushing and pushing, until January 2010. So
we took the decision to release SeaMonkey 2.0 at around Thunderbird
3.0b4 with the risk of a slightly unstable mailnews backend. But as the
alternative was to let SeaMonkey die it wasn't really a choice.

> You will say the same after switching to SM 2.1 ?

Unfortunately we may be forced to do that as well. Chrome seems to have
lit a fire under the Firefox devs and they plan to abandon the 3.5
(Gecko 1.9.1) branch once Firefox 3.6 is out in early 2010 and Firefox
3.7 in late 2010.

We had originally planned to keep 2.0 as our current branch for most of
2010. However it looks like we will need to release a 2.1 based on 1.9.2
(Firefox 3.6) somewhere in summer this year whether we like it or not.

Weave when installed in SeaMonkey currently syncs Form fill data, global
browsing history, passwords, (and I think) session restore and tabs.

iav (Igor Velkov) is looking into synchronizing the address book as
well, however the thunderbird addressbook APIs of which we share is a
total mess (the sort of mess that makes even veteran Thunderbird
developers go cross-eyed). So I'd give Igors chances as slim to none at
the moment.

In the SeaMonkey 2.1, Thunderbird 3.2 timeframe a Thunderbird developer,
jcranmer, plans to rewrite the addressbook APIs to make them saner,
actually usable by extensions such as weave and provide a unique ID for
each addressbook entry which we currently don't have.

This last is the main sticking point for any extension that wants to
sync addressbooks. gContactSync uses some sophisticated guesswork to
match google contacts to Thunderbird addressbook entries and does a very
good job of doing so. However there is no guarantee that this will work
100% of the time every time you change something in one instance of the
Thunderbird/SeaMonkey addressbook.

Oops! It is a sniffing problem. I get a "To enter portal, click here"
line (with a link) when I spoof IE 7. Selecting that link gives me the
FAQ.

Oh crap, turns out that there IS an even easier way...

Philip Chee has made available a version of Folderpane Tools that will
install directly on Seamonkey with no need of disabling compatibility
check or anything.

It's here:

Oh, you are almost there. You already have the folderpane.xpi file, and
you already know where the Add-On Manager is.
Now:
- Open the Add-On Manager.
- Click on the second icon (Extensions) -- the one that looks like a
green jigsaw puzzle piece.
- Click on the "Install" button on the lower left.
- Select the folderpane.xpi file from where you saved it (apparently
your desktop) and open it.

There you go!

Re: Transfer mail from old account to new

2010-01-09 Thread OldTimer

MCBastos wrote:

Interviewed by CNN on 7/1/2010 21:47, OldTimer told the world:

When I was typing the question I wondered whether it was clear enough.
So, here's what happens: When I click on the SM icon on the desktop it
opens with the old account first and I have to scroll down to my other
accounts to click on "Get Msgs" (it's quite a scroll as I've got lots of
subfolders listed). I'd rather not have to do this each time.

Now that I think about it, it seems obvious that the first account
listed in the left pane is the one that shows up first. I like the
suggestion of re-arranging the order, but I don't think I could handle
any "hacking". Perhaps there's an even easier way to do this?

Well, the bit of hacking I meant was to get around the version
compatibility checking. But actually, you only need to run this add-on
*once*, and it can later be disabled or removed. So, instead of a more
permanent workaround, you may just temporarily disable the compatibility
check.

So, going step by step:

1. Disable compatibility check. This page gives detailed instructions
(they are intended for Firefox, but they work the same in Seamonkey):
http://dotnetwizard.net/soft-apps/firefox-3-beta-4-disabling-extension-compatibility-check/
2. Install FolderPane Tools either from
http://www.chuonthis.com/extensions/folderpane.php
or from
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/258
3. After restarting Seamonkey, go to the Add-On Manager and click on the
"Options" button for Folderpane Tools. Use it to reorganize your
folders. Restart Seamonkey again
4. After you are happy with the way your mail windows looks, you may
disable/remove Folderpane Tools and reinstate compatibility checking (no
need to do all the stuff on step 1, the Add-On Manager will give a
one-click fix for this).

The install instruction at the download site (www.chuonthis.com)stated
to save the file to [SeaMonkey] but I don't know which file to use.

1) c:\Documents & Settings\sony\Application Data\Mozilla\Seamonkey ?
(There's also an "extension" subfolder in Mozilla).

2) c:\program Files\Mozilla.org\SeaMonkey ?

For the time being I've placed the download file (folderpane.xpi) on my
desktop.

The install instructions are to open Tools and select "Extensions" and
click Install button. The Tools menu in either SM folder (above)
doesn't have "Extensions, but does have "Add-on Manager". However when
I click on "Add-on Manager" there's no folderpane extension listed.

And I thought I was doing so well getting it downloaded to my PC.
Can you take me through the next steps?

Thanks,
Ed

There is something call the 'Reset E-mail Status Utility' you may be
able to use to solve this problem. It has been YEARS since I've used
it, but IF YOU HAVE NOT compacted your Trash folder, it should work.

It utilized an exe file called: tbrststs.exe

You can search Google for that file name and other keywords such as
"undelete," etc. I do not remember exactly how it's done, so you should
look for detailed instructions in your Google search.

There are also a few posts in MozillaZine about it, such as:

http://forums-test.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?f=39&t=1032175

A direct link to get the tbrstss.exe file is:

http://apveening.a61.nl/software/tbrststs.zip

Key #1: resetting the statuses of the deleted e-mails you want to
retrieve. Change the status (X-Status) to all zero.

Key #2: back up your original mail folders first, in case it goes bad!

Key #3: Do key #2 BEFORE key #1. ;-)

Good luck!!!

Now I am away from home and was visiting a website when the email alert

I went ahead and read my email, then read this newsgroup. I didn't look

When you travel to other areas that have a different mail server you may

But for now I can read email and read and post to this newsgroup, but

If you actually emptied the trash (waste basket for PC's-I guess) no!

if they were just moved to trash but not emptied then open Trash
folder and pull them out.

Actually, even if they were double-deleted (that is, deleted from the
Trash by using the "delete" command, but *not* by using the "empty
trash" command) it might, I said MIGHT be possible to recover them... by
manually editing the Trash file with a text editor and some knowledge of
internal structure of MBOX files.

In the same way, it *might* be possible to undelete them from the
original mail folder as long as it hasn't been compacted yet.

I did it a couple times, so I can say it's possible. But it's not
exactly easy.

But be careful -- I have all my accounts set to empty trash on exit,
so if I should happen to close SeaMonkey (as a way of avoiding
contention for the same file), I would lose the opportunity to do what
you describe. If the OP's in the same position, he should either

a) copy the trash file in Windows Explorer, modify the copy, and then
move the (renamed) copy back to the SM profile where SM will
"discover" it as a new folder; or

b) clear the "empty trash on exit" option before closing SM and then
feel free to work with the trash file as he sees fit.

Thanks for the tip. But where are the trash and mail files? I can't
find them anywhere under the SeaMonkey folder.

If you are using a windows based operating system, look down a path
similar to this one, where Michael Test is the current profile folder
containing your preferences and Mail Folders.

C:\Documents and Settings\Michael\Application
Data\Mozilla\Profiles\Michael Test (Followed by k34vfrt.slt), the slt
folder is the name of the current profile.

Keep in mind that with SM 1.1x when you upgrade your profiles folder are
not touched, only the Moxilla Programs folders and files are upgraded.

Re: test

2010-01-09 Thread n...@home
I apologize for making the above post. In the past, when I travelled, I
was unable to receive email or newsgroups directly. I had to go to the
website of my provider and read email there, and just do without
newsgroups. That was the status through years.

Now I am away from home and was visiting a website when the email alert
went off. It surprised me! I opened the news reader and somehow all my
email was there. I have no idea whether this is due to a Seamonkey
upgrade, or to something my ISP did.

I went ahead and read my email, then read this newsgroup. I didn't look
at the other newsgroup server I use for some other newsgroups.

I was happy, because it is a lot easier to read news and mail here, than
on my ISPs web page. To see if I could use the newsreader to send
email, I sent the above to myself, and erroneously to this newsgroup.
The email failed, but the newsgroup posting worked. This morning I
tried to use my other newsgroup server, but was denied access as I
needed a password. I'll look it up when I get home.

But for now I can read email and read and post to this newsgroup, but
cannot read or post in other newsgroups, nor send email from the reader,
which I can work around by sending it from my ISPs web page.

I'm not technologically adept, and have no idea why this change has come
about.

Welcome to the SeaMonkey Support newsgroup. f you have any issues in
using the Seamonkey internet application suite, by all means ask here,
and we will try to assist you.

There is a specific test group on this server, mozilla.test. It would be
best to post test messages there.

Could you provide an internet link for the extension?

The link is:https://secure.logmein.com/US/products/free/

You have to install on one PC and then access that PC from a second PC.
When you are on the second PC and try to login the first thing that will
happen is logmein will try to install a plug-in for your browser. After
this you can access the second PC as if you where there. Make for good
remote support.

Below is a quote from LogMeIn WEB site:

LogMeIn Free gives you remote control of your PC or Mac from any other
computer with an Internet connection.

Simply install LogMeIn on the computer you want to access (it takes
about 2 minutes), log into your account from another computer and click
the computer you want to control. You'll see its desktop and be able to
use all the applications on your remote computer as if you were sitting
in front of it - even if you're across town, across the country, or
across the world.

* Works with Windows PCs and Mac OS X
* Two-minute set-up
* 100% free

Sure, that is only an example which points to no website. ;)

But I see your point.why would someone want to do that??

Sometimes i also need a part of a link. In such a case i open the source
from which selecting only a part is possible without problems.

Would be nice if i could avoid this step. :-D

Or select the complete line ctrl-c then ctrl-v in notepad, then select
the part you want.
I do it this way, because i most of the time did not need to "copy" a
part of a link.

Address Book Syncing

2010-01-09 Thread MCBastos
I have a few Gmail accounts I access by IMAP nowadays, in part so as to
be able to use them from home, from my PortableApps flash drive on the
road, or failing that by webmail. So I have been thinking about address
book synchronization.

I noticed that there are at least two (perhaps more) add-ons on A.M.O.
-- Zindus and gContactSync -- that appear to be able to do exactly that.
Zindus seems to be a bit more focused on Zimbra (which I don't use) than
gMail, while gContactSync is still rated as "experimental." But from the
descriptions it seems gCS might do a better job.
I found no evaluation of them, no reason to choose one over the other.
Does anybody have any info?

And what about other ways to sync several Thunderbird/Seamonkey address
books without going through Gmail? I undertand that the gMail address
book and the Mozilla one are not a direct match, so not all info can be
synchronized... so a Seamonkey-to-Seamonkey automatic syncing (without
having to manually copy the address books) would be an interesting option.

It may appear so, but in practice, it just does not work out like that.
It most certainly does not have the consistent and predictable operation

I'm highly resistant to it becuase moving to the new components for thos
was needed for survival of SeaMonkey, independent of us liking it or not
- interestingly, after a few weeks of using the new stuff, I couldn't
dream of going back to the old functionality, which I discovered to work
worse for me than the new ones. YMMV, but in any case, if we would not

But be careful -- I have all my accounts set to empty trash on exit, so
if I should happen to close SeaMonkey (as a way of avoiding contention
for the same file), I would lose the opportunity to do what you
describe. If the OP's in the same position, he should either

a) copy the trash file in Windows Explorer, modify the copy, and then
move the (renamed) copy back to the SM profile where SM will "discover"
it as a new folder; or

b) clear the "empty trash on exit" option before closing SM and then
feel free to work with the trash file as he sees fit.

Thanks for the tip. But where are the trash and mail files? I can't
find them anywhere under the SeaMonkey folder.

click-and-drag selection works than a feature.

To be sure, I never missed this functionality... but if the community
thinks it's a worthy enhancement, a better way would be to use a
modified click-and-drag. Such as, right-click-and-drag, or
alt-click-and-drag or whatever combination is still available -- in this
mode the browser would ignore the link and behave as if it were normal text.

And, by the way... wouldn't this be a core (Gecko) enhancement?

I guess, yes.

I may be wrong about this, but the only 'keep for so many days' option I
know is on the server. I have the same setup on multiple machines so in
order that I get all wanted mails on all of the machines, I have things
set up to keep for 60 days or until deleted.

If that is your problem and the mails are no longer shown, I suspect
