How to set up a Newsgroup Subscription

2010-05-03 Thread Beorc Kano
I've been trying and trying to get a newsgroup reader, so as to have
access to various other functions (blocking messages by certain
obnoxious (or insane) users being one of those functions) that Google
Groups doesn't seem to provide. I found and downloaded both
Thunderbird and Seamonkey... and I can't figure out how to set up the
newsreader to pick up the newsgroup. I've looked through the help
files and FAQ's, and... nuthin'.

The error message I keep getting when I click the 'Manage my
subscriptions' link is thus;

Failed to connect to server alt.religion.wicca.

I know it can be done, as others tap into the newsgroup with other
newsreaders. I'm just technotarded enough that I can't figure it out.
Any help would be hot.

Thanks guys!

Well, since alt.religion.wicca is a newgroup and not a server. That is
why you get that error.

First you have to set up your newsgroup account to connect to a server,
then subscribe to the alt.religion.wicca newsgroup.

Advanced E-mail Searching

2010-05-03 Thread hawker
Looking at the Thunderbird 3.x screen shots it looks like they have
added some advanced e-mail searching capabilities to it.

I don't see anything like that yet in SM2.x. Are there plans to pull
those search capabilities into a future version of SM? When?
Are there good e-mail search enhancements plug ins out for SM 2.x that I
should look at?

One of the biggest things keeping my from finally ditching Eudora as my
primary e-mail source for SM is the amazing search capabilities in
Eudora verses the lacking search abilities in SM and Thunderbird 2.x (I
have no experience with Thunderbird 3.x). I was holding out for Eudora
8.x but three years into the project they are still don't have a 1.0
release. Given this I'm wondering if Seamonkey will have any relief in
sight.

The Advanced options tab is very very limited and very very slow.
Those features have not changed since SM1.x days and are similar to
thunderbird 2.x. Thunderbird 3 touted a totally redesigned and improved
search capability. I have not yet been able to try them.

I am looking for more complex search with more control over multiple
keywords, folders searched, relevance, areas of e-mail to search etc.
Eudora had all this ability, seamonkey does not. when your looking
though over 10 years of e-mail from several addresses and companies the
existing tools are not complex enough for me right now.

Looking here
http://www.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/thunderbird/features/#tabs-search
and other places I have looked makes it look like Thunderbird has some
more advanced features they rolled in.

Once someone writes code to do so. The actual backend for building and
querying the index do exist in SeaMonkey 2.0, but there's no UI to use
it (and building the index is turned off). Even an add-on should be able

If it's less than a handful, the most efficient use of the OP's time
would be to do it manually; he'd be done already.

If we're talking about capturing a hundred names and addresses, there
must be more efficient ways. For a clumsy example, he could copy/paste
the names and addresses en bloc from the message header, use MS Word's
word processing features to parse and format them into a table (e.g., a
comma marks the end of each record, convert to paragraph mark), paste
the table into Excel and export that as a csv file, which he could then
import into SM as an address book. From there it's a simple drag and
drop operation to make a list.

I'm sure there are more efficient ways of doing it. But this will
capture a few hundred names in less than 10 minutes.

Sure would be great if we had a built-in feature in our email program.

By other one, i meant the 'eternal-september'. I got into it, and I've
been moving around on there for a bit, asking questions and such. I
didn't know about new servers before tonight, so, yeah, that shows how
new I am to this. I am able to access their newsgroups, for support for
their news server, but I can't seem to get my username and password to
validate. i keep getting an 'invalid credentials' error when I set
Thunderbird or Seamonkey to auto request authentification (which they
require, as I'm sure you know). I put in my username and password, and I
am certain that they are correct... I'm just getting error after error
here... _

But hey, at least I can use the two programs I downloaded (TB and SM) in
order to troubleshoot those two programs. XD

Is there a waiting period, perhaps? I've tried changing my password, I
tred with the password they supplied to me, so on and so forth. Maybe I
should try making a new account?

My ISP is CableOne, sorry, I forgot to put that in the last one. _

Width: 600px
Height: 451px
Size of file: 0.04 KB (43 bytes)
Alternate text: Missing

However, when I paste that URL into another window and try to view it,
it turns out it's just a 1x1 dot. Same thing if I right-click and choose
View Image.

On the other hand, by examining the page source code, I identified this
JPEG as the image they're hiding:

http://graphics8.nytimes.com/images/2010/05/02/nyregion/20100502_TIMESSQUARE-slide-M2HN/20100502_TIMESSQUARE-slide-M2HN-slide.jpg

Apparently they're displaying it as a background, with a transparent
GIF in front of it to prevent you from figuring out where it is. Do you
have backgrounds disabled?

Now it's my turn. Video? What video?

Thanks, I'll try to get that other one to work. So far, I've
downloaded Seamonkey and Thunderbird, both in an attempt to be able to
use them and newsreaders. I guess i just don't know how to properly
configure it. I don't know what the server address is. I know it's
going to be something so simple and so stupid, and I'll feel like a
'tard, but I figure everyone has to start somewhere, and better late

I don't know what you mean by other one. You have to sign up for an
outside news server, if your ISP doesn't provide one, to get the address
for SM [or Thunderbird] to access the newsgroups. They are useless for
reading newsgroups without a newsgroup service provided by someone.

The server address will be provided by the service you choose. Who is
your ISP?
bj

By other one, i meant the 'eternal-september'. I got into it, and I've
been moving around on there for a bit, asking questions and such. I
didn't know about new servers before tonight, so, yeah, that shows how
new I am to this. I am able to access their newsgroups, for support for
their news server, but I can't seem to get my username and password to
validate. i keep getting an 'invalid credentials' error when I set
Thunderbird or Seamonkey to auto request authentification (which they
require, as I'm sure you know). I put in my username and password, and I
am certain that they are correct... I'm just getting error after error
here..._

My ISP is CableOne, sorry, I forgot to put that in the last one._

I don't think there's a waiting period. Don't worry about being new to this, or
the questions you ask, because we were ALL there at one time. :) With a little
patience we'll get all the blanks filled in.

Do I understand that you have put the news.eternal-september.org address, and
all the other info required in the SM New Account boxes? Just trying to
figure out where you are in this process. Whether you mean you have accessed
their support at their web site, or you actually have set up your new SM
newsgroup account and are still getting this error message. In other words,
are you beyond this point below [from the SM Help FAQ]:

Adding a Newsgroup Server [in Sea Monkey your mail news reader]

If the newsgroup you want to subscribe to is on a different server, you must
first set up access to that server. [Since it is not on Cable One's server]

To set up an additional newsgroup server, open the File menu in the Mail
window and choose New, then Account.

* Using the Account Wizard, indicate that the new account you want to set
  up is a Newsgroup account.

Once you've set up access to the new server, you can subscribe to newsgroups on
that
server. In the Mail window, open the File menu, and choose Subscribe.

Let us know if you've completed the SM new account process with the news server
address and port 119, etc. and we can go from there. Don't give up. :)

I am to that point, in fact, that's how I got to here. the next step for
me was to click the 'Automatically request authentication' box. Every
time I do that, and it pops up the boxes for filling in the username. I
enter my username, even cut/pasted from my activation e-mail. The next
box pops up, for the password, and I cut/paste that as well, so make
sure I get it right. That's when it gives me the error Invalid
Credentials.

Now, I DID just recently download Greasemonkey and installed a user
script for Google Groups that allows one to ignore users and the like,
so, at least in the interim, I don't have to put up with the loony I was
looking to avoid, but I would still like to get SM up and running
properly. It's a pretty nifty all-in-one program... I like it. It
reminds me of older programs... kinda endears me to it.

Oh! One more thing! How do I tell what server the newsgroup is on, when
looking at a Google Group? If I can get that, maybe I can cut right to
it without a password. the server I am using currently is
news.eternal-september.org. They list alt.religion.wicca as accessible
