Sync mods wanted

2012-02-01 Thread Robert Traynor (BobT)

Hi All,

Sync mods wanted, either one or the other:-

(First preference)
1. A quick and easy way of suspending or temporarily disabling
SeaMonkey's Sync.

or
2. Disabling the automatic Syncing and make the sync ONLY work when I
click on the customised icon or option under Tools etc. ie. When I want
it to work and not automatically..!

At the moment I have to completely disable Sync and when I want to
reactivate it, I have to reenter the settings again.

Why, you ask? Because I find that SeaMonkey works slightly differently
compared to FireFox, in that under SeaMonkey the Sync jumps in when I
first load the browser.

When I do this and SeaMonkey is trying to redraw lots of Tabs that were
open in the previous session, the Tabs often fail to draw and I get Not
Found (blah blah). More often though the Sync itself fails after taking
quite a long time.

I use FireFox as well and this effect is not noticed with FireFox.
I should note that I am using the very latest SeaMonkey 2.7 beta and
FireFox 10.

This SeaMonkey Sync effect has been happening for me for the past year
over many versions and also occurs on a fresh profile.

Open to suggestions.

Regards,
Robert Traynor (BobT).

Rufus, I note that you are using a MacCould it be that it's phoning

Yes they do but you can in Software Update to check at specified time
interval.
I have mine set for once a week.

But there are other things that will cause polling. For instance Apple
use a Time Server such a www, the old shortwave radio time server tied
to the Nuclear Time clock. Have no idea whether PC use a Time server.
But the software polls the server at least once an hour to sync the
time. And it works with an clock widget or software they take their time
from the system clock.

If you have any type of weather software That polls a server at least
every half hour.

So there are a lot of things That can cause your computer to Phone home
or poll a server.

But none of that should cause SM to ask for my Master Password - that is
all System level stuff that happens outside of SM, *and* any required
passwords are retrieved from the Apple KeyChain...which there aren't
any, as long as I'm on my home LAN and not needing to use SSL or
authenticate any access. Which I am...

And as I've said - this didn't happen once upon a time, then it got broken.

I bought a 2 GB flash drive (memory stick). I archive all software that
I install. Thus, if I encountered your problem with 2.7, I would
 already have 2.6.1 handy.

I do delete some old versions when I archive new ones. For example, I
have only the three latest SeaMonkey versions -- 2.4, 2.5, and 2.6 --
plus the partial MAR file to get 2.6.1 from 2.6. When I install 2.7, I
 will delete 2.4.

I do not archive software that I acquire on other hard media (e.g.,
CDs). Also, I cannot archive software unless it is possible to download
the installer file and install from my own hard drive. When possible, I
bypass stub installers and instead get the complete installer (e.g., for
 Flash).

My flash drive is only 75% full, including all the fonts that I have
obtained over a number of years.

I've had great luck with Moz-Backup
http://mozbackup.jasnapaka.com/

Before updating I make an archive of everything with Moz backup then
upgrade. If something goes wrong (loose book marks etc) then I just use
MozBackup to re-import the old profile into the new version.
If I had to go backwards would work here as well. Also works great to
move between Seamonkey/Netscape/Firefox/Thunderbird when I have had to
do that.

My flash drive is only 75% full, including all the fonts that I have
obtained over a number of years.

Good suggestion! Since I'm on 2.6.1 right now, what would I archive?
(I've got 90GB available on external hard drive.) SM.exe (43MB)? What
else? The entire SM folder in Program Files (51 MB)? How/where do I get
the installer? Is it unique to a particular SM version? Do I archive it
as well, or can I always get it online?

And, the really big question I still have--how the heck can I upgrade to
2.7 without another disaster? (Perhaps foolishly, still want to do it.)

Thanks for being here with good advice!

Yes they do but you can in Software Update to check at specified time
interval.

I have mine set fot once a week.

But there are other things that will cause polling. For instance Apple
use a Time Server such a www, the old shortwave radio time server tied
to the Nuclear Time clock. Have no idea whether PC use a Time server.
But the software polls the server at least once an hour to sync the
time. And it works with an clock widget or software they take their
time from the system clock.

If you have any type of weather software That polls a server at least
every half hour.

So there are a lot of things That can cause your computer to Phone home
or poll a server.

They do, but I have some control over that, and it happens in a System
Preference independent of SM - I set to check for Apple Software Update
manually and those requests for passwords are handled via Apple
Keychain, not SM.

This is a SM problem - it happens every session (just happened now,
under 2.0.14 on this machine). SM worked as advertised up until about
SM 1.1.12 or 1.1.16 or somewhere thereabouts. Then it broke and has
stayed broken. I'll write a formal bug later today probably, after I
install and observe SM 2.7 on my MacBook Pro and Mini tonight.

The worst thing about it is that when it happens with a download in
progress SM freezes and I have to Force Quit and I lose the whole
session - including the download. I'll also add that I have a second
Profile that does not have a Master Password set (because I don't use
Mail/News in that Profile) and this does not happen with that Profile.

Do you want SeaMonkey displaying the current content of the website you are
looking at??

As I understand things, when you make a request for a web page, SeaMonkey sends
off a request for the date/time the web page was created. It then compare this
info with the info for the web page it has in cache.

If the date/Time info is the same, SeaMonkey then re-displays what is in

The question wasn't whether SM caches the page, which of course is
subject to the user's settings, but whether it caches DNS. Should it
really have to look up the IP address a minute later before retrieving
the fresh content?
