I use SeaMonkey 2.38, selected the Night skin, clicked the Download link

Any idea?

Use Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled and try again.

Agreed.

But it depends what the server is sending. If it really sends nothing or
doesn't respond, a software routine could detect that; you'd probably
get a 404 error or something. But if it sends something that you and I
perceive as blank that isn't quite blank -- say, a single space
character -- the software would not be able to analyze and evaluate that
as "not interesting enough."

Well, sure. In a newsgroup one may have read the first post days ago.

Probably because you don't download any messages (Read or Unread) until
you actually click on a message that you want to read.

Unless, of course, you have selected to download every message by
setting up File -> Offline -> Download/Sync Now to actually download
messages from the news server onto your hard drive so you can read them
whilst offline!

Which is kind of useless

I did it in about:config for the news accounts. I found what numbers

Okay, but it seems silly when you have already downloaded Unread headers

Maybe I'll experiment.

Your wish has been granted.

To enable Yandex search in SeaMonkey, simply download the search
configuration file from Yandex and put it in the "searchplugins"
subfolder of your SeaMonkey profile folder.

1a) To search with Yandex.com (English), download the file
 https://yandex.com/opensearch.xml
from Yandex.com and save it as yandex-en.xml

1b) To search with Yandex.ru (Russian), download the .xml file
 https://yandex.ru/opensearch.xml
from Yandex.ru and save it as yandex-ru.xml

 2) Put the saved file (yandex-en.xml or yandex-ru.xml) in
the "searchplugins" subfolder of your SeaMonkey profile folder.

If your SeaMonkey profile folder does not contain a subfolder
named "searchplugins", then create the subfolder.

 3) Restart SeaMonkey

Now, if you want, you can go to
Edit >> Preferences >> Browser >> Internet Search
and select "Yandex" or "Яндекс" as your default search engine.

The usual suspects are bad add-on/plug-in and corrupt profile.
