Henry - the last time I saw any of those were at a Hamfest about 10 years ago
where I took mine to sell. All in all there were about 15 complete systems for
sale by various hams. At the end of the Hamfest they were all in a dumpster.
No one took theirs home.

So, good luck in selling them.

You shouldn't have to sign in, if your settings are right. You just
click on the news server account you have set up in SM, and the news
groups you have subscribed to, should download.

You have to sign in, and click the always offer credentials option to force
that. e-s behaves one way if you do sign in and another if you don't, but it
does not present the NNTP Authentication required prompt to trigger sending
login so you have to force it.

The problem is usually that people either don't force it, or use the wrong
server. And if you use secure login you have to connect to the server which has
the matching certificate.

Yes, there is, as shown at the page above. I thought that would explain
your LDAP server error...

I've been using e-s for several years and can't complain about it. But
if you want to spend $8 or whatever every month, enjoy.

On the e-s support group today (5/26), Ray Banana says:

mx02.eternal-september.org offline for hardware repair

Intermittent connection problems, degraded performance etc. are to be
expected, as its 8 CPUs and 8GiB of memory will be sadly missed.
Hopefully it will be back later today.

As an alternative to news.eternal-september and giginews at the higher
$$$ I really like. news.individual.net. I have been using it for about
12 years now with almost no issues. It used to be free but is now 10
Euros a year, a pretty good price in my mind. Yes I am in the US and yes
I have had no issues paying in Euros with my credit card. The price
just changes a tad each year depending on the exchange rate.

http://news.individual.net/

There are no binaries on this, so if you need binaries than, yes perhaps
giga news is your option.

If I was going to pay for a news service, I would go back to
individual.net. I used it for several years before and after they had
to institute a fee, when AOL and other ISPs canceled news services for
their clients.

Like you, I found it to be an excellent news service, and they filtered
more spam than any server I've used.

Hello Support.
The authentication server has been repeating requesting a password.
Normally this is not requested, being loaded into reader, but when
refreshed, still fails to authenticate.

To be precise, it's your client that repeatedly asks for your
password. The error message from the server, however, stated that no
LDAP (authentication server) could be reached. In fact, the master LDAP
server failed last night and, while there are two standby servers
available, these will only be tried when the primary server either
rejects to connection or there is a connection timeout. In this case,
the connection request to the master server would wait for several
minutes, although the timeout in the LDAP client is set to 5 seconds.
This caused newsreader connections to fail as well as the web site
slowing down while waiting for a reply from the LDAP server. It also
affected user registrations and password change/retrieval requests.
Fixed this morning at 3 o'clock UTC

 End Original Message

Servers fail. It happens. I've been using ES since it was Motzarella and
this is the first major connection problem that I've personally experienced.
Not certain of your own track record, but it seems a bit scorched earth to
write off ES because of an isolated server failure--just my two whiskers
worth.

There are other free newsservers available with varying reliability. I've
found ES to be the best of the lot, and Ray to be a capable admin. I keep
AIOE as a backup source just in case. Helpful in situations like these,
which are rare, IME, for ES.

This was the second failure in less than a week.

The first time it just quit working. The only cure was unsubscribe from
the server in SeaMonkey the go to profile and wipe out anything
associated with eternal-september

then It started working for a day, the this LDAP error showed up I spent
the better part of the day removing and re-entering till blue in the
face. nothing would help. Two failures in a two day period doesn't sound
reliable.

You spent time unsubscribing, wiping, probably resetting up. I just
waited.

Then you did it all again, while I just waited.

Why did I wait? Because I had gone to the e-s web site and seen that
they were having a server problem. You were given the link to the page
of server status at least twice, and never bothered to acknowledge that
you ever even looked. So your fiddling was all for naught.

Two failures in a two day period doesn't sound reliable.

It was a server that failed. Hardware fails. Give him a break.

My guess is that you've entered a server name in the wrong place for
that account, but I can't help. Good thing you'd given up before
posting, so you don't need help. :)

I am tired of having to tear my hair out. Mozilla, Netscape.
Annexcafe, sand msnews Microsoft work fine.

Microsoft will be mothballing their server. Starting in June and
continuing through the fall, they'll be shutting down their groups in
phases. They're providing what they call an NNTP Bridge with limited
functionality for people who want to keep using netnews clients with
their webforums.

Announcement about the shutdown of the newsgroups, with contact info:
http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/default.aspx?dg=microsoft.public.news.servertid=7e72fb9e-53a8-41fc-82c9-589c1dbca01acat=en_US_9b6d26c4-de58-4d72-93d9-4c56f036b989lang=encr=USsloc=p=1
or http://tinyurl.com/27hnjqa

More help in microsoft.public.news.server or at
http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/default.aspx?dg=microsoft.public.news.server
(until June 1, when it will close).

Instructions for setting up the NNTP Bridge:
http://connect.microsoft.com/MicrosoftForums/

They say it supports Thunderbird, so I guess it should be ok with
SeaMonkey as well. And presumably the Usenet versions of the groups
will live on, just not peering with the old msnews server.

You shouldn't have to sign in, if your settings are right. You just
click on the news server account you have set up in SM, and the news
groups you have subscribed to, should download.

How did you set up your ES news server account?

Yes, there is, as shown at the page above. I thought that would explain
your LDAP server error...

I've been using e-s for several years and can't complain about it. But
if you want to spend $8 or whatever every month, enjoy.
