The authentication server has been repeating requesting a password. Normally this is not requested, being loaded into reader, but when refreshed, still fails to authenticate. To be precise, it's your client that repeatedly asks for your password. The error message from the server, however, stated that no LDAP (authentication server) could be reached. In fact, the master LDAP server failed last night and, while there are two standby servers available, these will only be tried when the primary server either rejects to connection or there is a connection timeout. In this case, the connection request to the master server would wait for several minutes, although the timeout in the LDAP client is set to 5 seconds. This caused newsreader connections to fail as well as the web site slowing down while waiting for a reply from the LDAP server. It also affected user registrations and password change/retrieval requests. Fixed this morning at 3 o'clock UTC End Original Message Servers fail. It happens. I've been using ES since it was Motzarella and this is the first major connection problem that I've personally experienced. Not certain of your own track record, but it seems a bit scorched earth to write off ES because of an isolated server failure--just my two whiskers worth. There are other free newsservers available with varying reliability. I've found ES to be the best of the lot, and Ray to be a capable admin. I keep AIOE as a backup source just in case. I just waited. then It started working for a day, the this LDAP error showed up I spent the better part of the day removing and re-entering till blue in the face. nothing would help. Then you did it all again, while I just waited. Why did I wait? Because I had gone to the e-s web site and seen that they were having a server problem. You were given the link to the page of server status at least twice, and never bothered to acknowledge that you ever even looked. So your fiddling was all for naught. I use Tera News as my backup (free for 50m/day after a one-time $3.95 setup fee). I've had to weather a couple of brief e-s outages over the years, but I'd consider them _very_ reliable. -JW ___ support-seamonkey mailing list support-seamonkey@lists.mozilla.org https://lists.mozilla.org/listinfo/support-seamonkey

I've been working for last half hour to get anything from eternal-september. Now I am getting a can't find LDAP server. I am going to do without USENET. I am tired of having to tear my hair out. Good thing you'd given up before posting, so you don't need help. :) I am tired of having to tear my hair out. Mozilla, Netscape. Annexcafe, sand msnews Microsoft work fine. Microsoft will be mothballing their server. Starting in June and continuing through the fall, they'll be shutting down their groups in phases. They're providing what they call an NNTP Bridge with limited functionality for people who want to keep using netnews clients with their webforums. Announcement about the shutdown of the newsgroups, with contact info: http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/default.aspx?dg=microsoft.public.news.servertid=7e72fb9e-53a8-41fc-82c9-589c1dbca01acat=en_US_9b6d26c4-de58-4d72-93d9-4c56f036b989lang=encr=USsloc=p=1 or http://tinyurl.com/27hnjqa More help in microsoft.public.news.server or at http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/default.aspx?dg=microsoft.public.news.server (until June 1, when it will close). Instructions for setting up the NNTP Bridge: http://connect.microsoft.com/MicrosoftForums/ They say it supports Thunderbird, so I guess it should be ok with SeaMonkey as well. And presumably the Usenet versions of the groups will live on, just not peering with the old msnews server. -- »Q« /\ ASCII Ribbon Campaign\ / against html e-mail X http://www.asciiribbon.org/ / \ ___ support-seamonkey mailing list support-seamonkey@lists.mozilla.org https://lists.mozilla.org/listinfo/support-seamonkey

You just click on the news server account you have set up in SM, and the news groups you have subscribed to, should download.
