Re: [Sursound] the facebook group

2022-01-08 Thread Jakob Gille
I just joined the group, but I wanted also to leave my thinking about
Facebook.
I mainly use the site for events and groups and don't want to miss on a
lot of suggestions and ideas I got from group members in the past.
But you have to start somewhere, and that it would be better to leave
Facebook should be obvious right now.

Does someone know any replacement, especially for Facebook groups?
Preferably in an open source format, where it would be nice to get all
the groups moving to in the long term.
Maybe a post with a hint to a new page could get things started and so
slowly reducing the need for being on Facebook.

It seems Surround Sound on Facebook is still under my control. As such,

I also feel that the group is very helpful but absolutely detest having to
use Facebook.
I am currently setting up a training facility in the UK where initially
anolog sound recording will become a core skill before moving to digital.
The know lage contained in this group will be invaluable when we are
recording and playing back in multi channel spatial audio.
The perfect solution would be a repository of information with a message
board on its own site, but I understand that requires work and funding.

I agree, I do not see a reason ("convenience" is not enough for me) to
support a commercial platform that profits from conflict and
misinformation, and sells behavioral information all the time.

I was trying to come up with an analogy of how misinformation would be
monetized even in the sursound group, but my imagination failed me...
I'm sure if we go there we will find out pretty soon.

Facebook when Yahoo Groups closed. I have found the FB experience very
unsatisfactory. I essentially no longer follow those groups.[micbuilders] moved

I am on Facebook purely for forums, with a locked down account that has all
privacy settings to on, all adverts hidden with zero on my timeline. I
removed everything years ago, and only post in groups, and only members can
see those.
I agree with Jack that some forums are very useful, but hate the fact they
are on a platform for lying and deceit. So i am with Fons on that one, and
would prefer them to be elsewhere.
This group has been my most used resource, and i would like to keep it as
such.
I just wish some of the people on Facebook would come here, but if there is
a sursound on Facebook please provide a link.

Though i'm not the most active poster here, following the discussions
and pointers to info in this group is extremely useful for my own work,
and i beleive for many others who as me are not always very active.

I really hope the exchange in sursound can continue in a simple and easy
accessible way, preferably in this email list, and not move to a closed
channel where it won't be accessible any more.

Happy new year!

So you suggest to support a platform

* that systematically amplifies division, extremism, and
  polarization around the world,

* where you are the product to be sold, for any purpose
  including manipulation of elections,

* is owned by a sociopath who thinks that you have no right
to privacy, and has consistently lied about Facebook's
  policies.

The sooner FB disappears the better it will be for all of us.

1) Could you link to it? Facebook's search function seems to think I
misspelled the word surround, and generally gives no relevant results.
2) Even so, I wonder if a platform that's intent on stealing your attention
at every opportunity and rewards a short attention span and lazy
procrastination browsing is the right place for a forum for deep technical
discussion.
