 Explorer 6, 7 and 8 and beyond.

Great! :-) I strongly encourage you to publish results of your
research afterward, if possible. ;-)

It seems that for IE 6 and 7 there is only Adobe SVG Viewer

No, there is a number of alternatives to the ASV (Adobe SVG Viewer)
plug-in. Mostly are also ActiveX-based plug-ins, but there are
substantially different approaches like Java-based applets.

You may take a look at a summary article on viewer implementations [1]
and check the massive viewer matrix [2] for more implementations and
related information.

clearly the rise of Silverlight has blown away that idea in a
classic Microsoft You will use only our technology move.

Maybe, but pressure is steadily increasing [3] and I sincerely expect
that Microsoft reconsiders adding SVG support over both the commercial
interests on it's proprietary technology and the historic divergences
with the SVG community... :-)

Hope this helps,

RE: [svg-developers] decrease stroke-width when zoomed in?

2006-08-08 Thread Peter Kalev
You are right - the only way to adjust the stroke-width during zoom is with
JavaScript.

On zoom, loop through all the elements that need their stroke adjusted, one by
one read their stroke-width, multiply it by the zoom factor then set it.

Hope that helps...

Hi,
I would like to ask if anybody knows how it is possible to influence
the stroke-width when a feature is zoomed in too much. I want to make
the stroke of my features descrease proportionally with the zoom in rate.
I saw the option used in the Yosemite Hiking map:

document.getElementById(park_boundary)
.setAttributeNS(null,stroke-width,myMainMap.curWidth*0.005);

But I did not manage to implement it on my map. I changed the multiple
factor (0.005) but it simple has no effect.
Can somebody please explain how it works, or whether there is another
solution (demonstrate on a working example maybe).
Thank you in advance.

RE: [svg-developers] getURL/XMLHTTP

2006-06-29 Thread Peter Kalev
I noticed the same thing (ASV3.0 IE6.0) - can't you use the third
doc's 'parseXML'?

When I load my HTML page and the embedded svg's load they identify
themselves to the 'mother' page and then I use them as part of the DOM.
I have to be careful which one I use for the 'parseXML', but when I call
my web services I use a 'generic' AJAX method.

!DOCTYPE svg PUBLIC -//W3C//DTD SVG 20001102//EN

Subject: Re: [svg-developers] Thoughts on optimizing ASV rendering SVG

I have a similar problem. I've developed an SVG front end for editing
databases, IE only at this point. Drawback is that if the db is rather
large, performance falls off fast. For instance, my svg when fully
loaded is about 3.5 MB, which I don't think of as all that large. I make

svg maps that are that big and bigger. The map performance is much
better. I've tried to minimize the size, but I can only do so much. I
reuse buttons and textboxes. I use the svg clip art as a source and make

reusable elements in Inkscape. Inkscape adds a lot of useless stuff like

opacity:1.; and so on. Below is an example of what Inkscape
creates. I do not know what attributes hinder performance. I get rid of
attributes that I know add nothing. I've even substituted out such
things as style=stop-opacity:0.4055 with stop-opacity='0.4055'

linearGradient id=linearGradient8451stop id=stop8452 offset=0
style=stop-color:#ff;stop-opacity:0; /stop id=stop8453
offset=1.000
style=stop-color:#ff;stop-opacity:0.4055;//linearGradient

I am not sure what performance degradations occur when using use tags.

Is performance related to just the added text of a use tag? How about
linear gradients and use tags? I'm constantly looking for ideas, so any
input would be appreciated. If nothing else, it's a good exercise.
Thanks.

in many fields, such a java, A+, Microsoft, Oracle and many others, can

help if svg becomes part of it.

2. The idea of an ID attribute is to only have one attribute with a

The only thing you could (possibly) do would be to getElementById(

It's not working... I'm using adobe svg viewer 3.03 and IE 6.
In the specification I found that this element should manage this event

Is a problem with adobe?

RE: [svg-developers] Changing HTML content

2006-01-31 Thread Peter Kalev
I have done svg-html communications with embed/ASV3/IE6, so I am not
100% sure if the same applies for object.

I have a mouse-move event handler on the entire svg screen that
communicates to the html page via parent.functionName(attributes go
here) and it works like a charm. I fact once by mistake I forgot to put
parent. In front of the function name and it still worked fine.

In case nobody responded to this ...
I consider visual building search to be an SVG
application. There are case studies in the back of
SVG Unleashed that explain how to write three
different SVG applications, but not visual building
search. The monitor and control chapter shows what's
involved for the hybrid raster-vector display (the
picture of the building with the dynamic text). From
reading the case studies you would understand what is
invovled with building an SVG application. I don't
know of a complete SVG application tutorial on the
web.

You can also view the source of the SVG in the Adobe
visual building search application to get hints or try
to figure the whole thing out for yourself.

Hi Francis,

I have the following setup: IE6, ASV3, HTML page with embedded SVG, I
use JavaScript to zoom and pan then simply print the web page and the
result is a printed page of the area that was visible on the screen.

In order to avoid squashing of the svg image while printed, I use
absolute dimensions in the style sheets used for print media (11in x
8.5in). Also make sure you set your printer to LANDSCAPE...

Doug,
As always, you are well-informed. I agree with your evaluation of
Kurt, his efforts, and Victoria. But you must understand that I
believe that SVG can best be served by a serious US recognition at
this time. Shucks, if the opening came to San Diego, I probably
would have work SO hard to help it happen..I don't want this. I'd
rather go to Victoria and enjoy its lovely environment.
Anyway, if others feel that SVG would be best supported at this time
by coming to San Diego U.S., and they can offer their support, then
let that be an indicator...If none respond, then I am wrong in my
assumptions.

 Hi, Francis-

Actually, as I learned at SO2005, the original location for SVG
Open 2006
was slated to be San Francisco, but the plan had to be nixed. I
think the
reasons cited were a lack of local sponsors willing to commit
early on (a
serious blow) and trouble finding a venue that could keep costs
down. Nobody
else stepped up to the plate, and I am personally very
appreciative to Kurt
Cagle for jumping in at the last minute to arrange for it to be in
Victoria,
BC, Canada. He had to scramble to take care of those 2 things, and
he did it
well (though I'm sure there's still much to do on those accounts).

Another factor, as I understand it, is that it can be rather
difficult in
this post-9-11 America for foreigners to get US visas on short
notice (say,
3-6 months). This would threaten the number of possible attendees
and
presenters (who might not know whether their presentations were
accepted
 until a few months beforehand).

Besides, Victoria is beautiful, and it's easily reached from the
US. I don't
see how it threatens the US SVG market or American attendees at
all. As for
the US being the best market, just try to buy an SVG-enabled phone
here. :(

Plus? In Victoria? Kick-butt whale-watching rides on a zippy
little zodiac!
I didn't see any whales, but it was like a 2-hour long log-flume
ride
cracking over those waves. And I got to eat seaweed right out of
the ocean.
(The only thing I got in San Diego was a really bad case of
sunburn...)

It is a very challenging commitment for someone to undertake the
organization of a conference, and while it's regrettable that not
every need
can be accomodated, I salute those who are willing to take on the
task.

request.onreadystatechange = callback();
request.send(postData);
var res = request.responseText;

  }

The response I get back (and expect) is html markup (content-type
 text/html);
I want to write this to the browser so that the html form is
displayed.

 I tried
using document.write(res) but I get the error: document.write is
not
 a function...

I am usng Deer Park Apha 1 on linux.

 Thanks, in advance, Roger.

I am using SVG to show tree layout of our metadata objects.

And I customized the svg menu which shows when user right click on
nodes.

My problem is, how to find the coordinates of the node inside the
script which triggered by a menu item in the cusomized menu?

Thanks

RE: [svg-developers] foreignObject in Batik...

2005-03-16 Thread Peter Kalev

I will be happy if Batik simply ignored the XML inside of the
foreignObject so I can pass some data that is not in the correct SVG
format.

Hi Peter,

No Batik does not support foreignObjects. I'm not
sure what you would expect Batik to do with a foreignObject.

I tried to incorporate it in the svg code and got bunch of
exceptions, which disappeared the moment I replaced foreignObject
 with g.

RE: [svg-developers] print zoomed portion of svg map

2005-01-12 Thread Peter Kalev

I am not sure how to do it in a stand-alone SVG, but if you have an html
wrapper with javascript you can window.print()...

But be aware that the svg may appear a bit distorted, which can be
corrected with styles by using real measurement units (i.e. inch, cm,
etc.)

Hope that helps...

RE: [svg-developers] Menu item visibility

2004-12-20 Thread Peter Kalev

You can dynamically setAttribute(display, none / inline) and that
will hide/show a menu item from the right click menu.

About the separators, I noticed that if you have two separators one
after the other in the code for the menu, ASV will only show one of them
and ignore the other.

Hope that answers your questions...

Hi all,
in ASV 3, can I set dynamically a menu item visibility dynamically ?
I know it's possible to set the checked or enabled status, but I can't
find
the corresponding attribute to set the visibility.
Can you tell me too, if thoose actions are also available for menu
separators ?

Regards
Nicolas
