[swinog] UPC Mailservers problems with greylisting
Hi We are seeing problems with greylisting in mails coming from UPC mailservers. After receiving our "451 Greylisting" response, we never see a retry of the mail again. The sender does not receive an NDR. We have seen this behaviour from the servers at 84.116.36.xxx. Other servers for example the ones in the range 62.179.121.xxx are retrying correctly. [swinog] E-Mail Hacks
Hi all I might be slightly off-topic here, because it's not a network issue, but it might be of interest to some of you anyway and maybe you've had customers which were affected as well. I don't know if this ploy is new, but after having two customers affected within one week, I suspect it is. The customer receives an e-mail with an invoice from his supplier, which he trusts and has worked with in the past. Shortly after this e-mail he receives another e-mail from the same sender and in the exact same layout stating that the company has a new bank account and that this account should be used. The second e-mail is forged of course. We haven't beeen able to find out where the original mail gets captured (most likely on the suppliers client, because in one case, more than one customer of the supplier was affected). The fraudulent bank account was in UK in both cases, in one case the amount was around CHF 6K, where the UK authorities did not get active, in the second case it was a 6 digit amount... That case is still ongoing. The fraudulent bank account was already closed again in both cases when the customer realized that his transaction had gone to the wrong account (usually after the supplier asked if the money had not been transferred yet). Have you had similar cases? Re: [swinog] [Spam] Blocking Malware distribution sites
Hi all (again) The more I think about it, the less I think SWITCH thought about it, before publishing such nonsense. "On 25 November 2010 SWITCH will launch an new initiative to maintain the high security standards of Swiss websites." Hello? Since when does SWITCH have anything to say about the security of websites? Security of Domains: ok, but websites? Remember: Internet != WorldWideWeb Deleting the name server delegation of a domain not only shuts down access to one website, but to ALL Internet services depending on DNS in that domain. "From different third parties we receive a fairly large number of URLs in .ch/.li ccTLDs which distribute malware." Exactly - specific URLs (or the websites behind those URLs) may spread malware, but not the domain itself, but again - since SWITCH cannot block access to specifiec URLs, there is no reason to block access to the whole domain. So I absolutely second Andre Oppermanns opinion: "This delegation suspension plan is entirely broken by design and should be immediately stopped." Let me briefly explain what we will do, as it is relevant to the SWINOG community: >From different third parties we receive a fairly large number of URLs in .ch/.li ccTLDs which distribute malware. We're talking a few hundred URLs per week. In a first step SWITCH verifies that this claim is true. If the site is indeed distributing malware we will contact the domain holder and technical contact by e-mail and ask them to remove the problem within one working day. If the they fail to do so, we will delete the name server delegation from the zone-file [1]. We report this to MELANI, as required by law [2]. The domain holder will be informed about this. Removing the name server delegation is not really efficient as long as DNS caches, containing entries of that domain are not flushed. SWITCH plans to make the list of blocked domains available to relevant parties, i.e. ISPs operating name servers for their customers. If you want to receive this info send us an e-mail message to c...@switch.ch and we will get in touch with you. Since we don't want any finger pointing or bashing of affected sites, we want you to keep this info confidential. To join, we therefore ask you to sign a non disclosure agreement (NDA). Please get in touch with if you have any question. Does anybody have a contact person at web.de responsible for e-mail? Their anti-spam settings seem to be pretty harsh. When our customers try to send newsletters with more than about 10 web.de recipient addresses, further mails are being blocked for quite some time, causing delays and filling our outbound queue. One of our users wanted to send a mail somewhere and it was rejected by the remote mailserver because we are listed in that list. Though, bl.csma.biz does not resolve. My understanding of blacklist is, that if there is no result for the check (that is based on DNS, right?), it assumes it is listed. In that case, the remote mailserver, rejecting mails from listed servers, would accept no mails at all? Now they will have serious fun over there, since the remote server belongs to one of the big US stock exchanges... =:-) Oh and I fully agree that it is a very bad idea to block mails on a single criteria. [swinog] New Mail-Filters at Cablecom?
Hello all I'm seeing a lot of 550-Your mailserver connection is being denied. Please use your IPSs failures when our customers send email from their domains via our smtp server to @highspeed.ch or @swissonline.ch addresses. Does anybody know for what reason connections are being denied with this error message? Our sending smtp server is not the same as the MX record the domain points to, could this be the problem? But I guess then a lot of other providers would be having problems as well. [swinog] Cablecom Routing/Peering changes?
Hi all Our office is connected via VPN through Cablecom Highspeed (62.2.230.80) to Init7 (82.197.163.110). Last Thursday, we had a short interruption and since then throughput is really bad. Fredy Kuenzler said, the interruption was due to peering changes of Cablecom to Init7. I'm trying to find out where the problem is, maybe someone here can help me out. A trace shows this: Tracing route to r1escape.cpe.init7.net [82.197.163.110] over a maximum of 30 hops: 1<1 ms<1 ms<1 ms 192.168.10.1 2 7 ms 7 ms 7 ms 62-2-80-229.business.cablecom.ch [62.2.80.229] 312 ms11 ms11 ms 10.219.224.1 413 ms13 ms13 ms tengig-11-0.blxOTF001.gw.cablecom.net [62.2.33.5 ] 514 ms13 ms13 ms tengig-11-0.blxOTF001.gw.cablecom.net [62.2.33.5 ] 616 ms15 ms37 ms 194.42.48.10 715 ms15 ms17 ms r9.core.init7.net [213.144.128.9] 819 ms17 ms16 ms r1escape.cpe.init7.net [82.197.163.110] Pings up to 62.2.33.5 are fine, pinging 194.42.48.10 (TIX) and further reveal sporadic timeouts...
