THIS IS NOT A "TRUE" STORY and should not be on this list even if it was!!!

This same "true" story has been passed around for years - by word of mouth
before the internet.

t-and-f: Interesting BGSU track page

2002-05-02 Thread tborish

Interesting thoughts from Jessie Squire on BGSU athletic director to drop
men's track:

"The first criteria used to decide which sports to cut was money. The men’s
track program’s annual expenses total $179,000 (less than 2% of the athletic
budget). It does generate revenue, though; over $54,000 from NCAA Sport
Sponsorships and Scholarship Distribution funds alone. Add in the tuition of
42 student-athletes and State of Ohio funding for in-state students, and the
men’s track program bring in a total of $436,978 to the University-a net GAIN
of over $257,000! It may be interesting to note that in the 2000-01 school
year, football and men’s basketball combined for a LOSS of over $1.9 million!
So much for using money as a deciding factor."

It seems to me that the most important issue is that of the recipe. Has anyone
tried it? Is it any good? Is there such a thing as a bad chocolate chip cookie?
Have we had every discussion known to mankind concerning track and field?

t-and-f: Yet another program cut

2002-05-02 Thread Steve Vaitones

It appears that Babson College, a Division III school in Wellesley MA, will
be dropping cross country and track. Don't have all the details/reasons
(i.e., Title IX, budget, other, or some combination). The coach told me
this last Saturday; the team was notified on Thursday, two days before
their conference championship meet.
Babson has had cross country for 40+ years, but only started their track
program three years ago. This season they had their largest turnout and
interest was growing. Most of the cuts mentioned recently have been
Division I; here is a DIII school with no football program getting the ax.

Re: t-and-f: Fw: recipe, cakey lumps of tastless gunk

2002-05-02 Thread Tom Derderian

That is the joke. The recipe is really bad. All that flour and blended
oatmeal, whatever that is, a total of 9 cups, with only 2 cups of sugar
would make cakey lumps of tasteless gunk. Only 24 oz of chocolate chips? And
why grate the Hershey bar? ...totally stupid recipe. For only $100 bucks you
can have one of mine.
Tom, who is the baker in our house.

What's really remarkable is that there have been more posts regarding this hoax than
there were regarding Mt. Sac, the upcoming Cardinal Invite or even the Penn Relays.

In fact in Dutch (and many more European countries) the , (komma) means what in
North-America the . (dot) means. So then it would say two laps of ten-and-a-half
kilometers (not surprisingly about half a marathon).

PS You would usually write '10,5km laps', though, so it probably was a funny

Yeah, the only thread bigger than the cookie thread is the recurring
discussion over nobody saying anything about track. If all those who are
inclined to post complaints about the lack of track talk would post
something about track instead, the problem would would not exist in the
first place.

t-and-f: Bucher out for at least six weeks

2002-05-02 Thread John Sun

Here's a post about track

Athletics-Bucher out for at least six weeks with foot
injury

GENEVA (Reuters) - Swiss 800 metres world champion
Andre Bucher has been sidelined for at least six weeks
after fracturing his left foot during training.

Bucher told Swissinfo.org that the injury would force
him to miss the European Cup in June and July's Grand
Prix meeting in Lausanne.

But the 28-year-old refused to be drawn on whether he
would make the European championships in Munich in
August.

"That all depends on how quickly the injury heals," he
said.

Bucher, who became Switzerland's first track world
champion when he won the 800 metres title last year in
Edmonton, suffered the injury while running around a
bend.

"I'm not going to get too down about it," Bucher said.
"But it means the first half of the season is over for
me."

Just like those who complain about not marking every throw in Suzy Powell's
recent AR series are those who refuse to get off their duff up in the press
box and go down and help mark on the field, when the meet is obviously
short of officials. ("it's my job as a journalist to point out problems; not
solve them!")
I have absolutely no problem with somebody marking, or 'shagging' implements
in the field, with a portable mike in their hand, announcing to the crowd
who's up next at the same time, as long as they pay attention (safety).

By the way, I'm curious- usually three competent officials (sometimes even
just two) are all that are needed to mark every throw and still keep
the competition moving along expeditiously.
If every throw was not marked in San Diego, one might assume they only had one or two
officials available.

Yet American (and World) records require signoff by three certified officials
last time I checked. Is Suzy's WR in jeapardy because it wasn't witnessed by
enough USATF officials? If it's NOT in jeapardy, what were those officials
doing, just standing around?

Not quite the same thing, but Run-Down always has, and hopefully always
will, offered a directory of links to every known collegiate cross
country/track & field web site in North America:

http://run-down.com/Colleges/

CollegeRunning.com undertook a similar project at one point, but did not
complete it because they felt it would be redundant (we bounced ideas off
each other for a while). I know they were much more into live reports and
what not, but the above URL should be better than nothing.

t-and-f: Regional Qualifying (long)

2002-05-02 Thread Lindemanr

I'm also a bit surprised that there has been no discussion here re: the NCAA
approval of regional qualifying, and I was hoping someone else would initiate
the discussion. Having seen none, I'll then take it on myself to announce
that, in fact, the NCAA Division I Board of Directors (18 university
presidents), last Thursday approved (a) 40% increase in field size for men's
and women's Division I NCAA Outdoor Championships, and (b) the regional
qualifying concept.

You can get the details of the vote at:
http://www1.ncaa.org/membership/governance/division_I/docs/mgmt_council/mgmt_c

ouncil_April_2002/Joint_report.htm

For a detailed description of what the NCAA T&F Committee and NCAA Division I
Championships Cabinet had asked for, (their rationale, the history of the
proposal, and survey results), and what the Division I Management Council had
approved by overwhelming margins three times before last week's Board
approval, go to:
http://www1.ncaa.org/membership/governance/division_I/docs/board_of_dirs/2002_

04_Board_of_Directors/Agenda_4_25_02_Board.htm ; go to 11.d. and click on
"supplement 11."

Both regional qualifying and the field size increase will go into effect with
the 2003 NCAA Outdoor Championships in Sacramento. Those Championships will
now be staged on June 11-14. Next year's regional meets will be staged on
May 30-31. The NCAA T&F Committee will shortly be sending out a letter to
all NCAA Division I institutions soliciting bids for the four (4) regional
meets.

Much of the framework for the regional qualifying setup has been established
from meetings of an ad hoc committee made up of NCAA T&F Committee members as
well as representatives from the USTCA/Division I Coaches Association, which
met initially in Chapel Hill, NC in January, 1999. Their recommendations
were reported to the Coaches Association at their December, 1999 convention
in Los Angeles. There remains much refining to be done of the mechanics of
how the system will work, for example, the format for the 2-day regional
meets and for the expanded NCAA Championships themselves, how the at-large
process will be managed, etc. The NCAA T&F Committee has invited the Coaches
Association to partner with them in further defining these parameters.

I'm sure that critics will resume flaming this concept as they've done in the
past, and I'm just as sure that the next few years will find this process
evolving as we iron out the flaws that the critics will rightfully point out.
However, IMHO, the addition of regional qualifying and expansion of our
Championships will set collegiate track & field back on a road to recovery in
the form of increased attendance and attention from fans and media. (And my
good friends, Scott, DJ and Mark-- any increased attendance and attention
will enhance your great meets as well! You're a huge part of collegiate
track & field, and I can assure you, we'll all still come!)

To answer the last question: They were probably sitting, not standing. The
average age of our T&F officials is Jurassic. Most can't stand long enough to
work the meets (ok, its an exaggeration, but not much of one). We are going to
be in some serious trouble in 5-10 years when all these guy/gals start showing
up at the track in their Rascal Scooters (TM). All those bitching about this
should put down the beer & chips and go take an officials test - quickly. If
you can read & write, you'll pass. This is more an issue for the future of the
sport than all the drugs and lazy coaches/athletes will ever be.
