Re: t-and-f: ???France goes berserk ???Again?
If the article is correct, this smells like more France versus USA politics. No, it's not France v. USA politics. But it is another wake up call to get national and international rules harmonized before the Paris World Champs. There's a thread on this on the IAAF community board's Anti-Doping Issues section - http://www.iaaf.org/community/forums/index.htmx . - Original Message - From: Randy Treadway [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, March 18, 2003 8:08 PM Subject: t-and-f: ???France goes berserk ???Again? This article doesn't make much sense at all. How can a national federation ban athletes of another country from IAAF meets held in its territory, if neither the IAAF or that athlete's national federation have any such action? Or is the article wrong, and it's not really the French federation but the IAAF itself which is imposing a penalty? Which would mean its not just IAAF meets in France, but ANYWHERE during the suspension period? http://www.newsday.com/sports/nationworld/wire/sns-ap-run-white-drugs,0,3232 438.story?coll=sns%2Dap%2Dsports%2Dheadlines If the article is correct, this smells like more France versus USA politics. If this is France going unilateral in imposing penalties on its own, then the IAAF should jerk accreditation away from the French GP meets. RT
t-and-f: Dragila No-Height at WIC
Hi all -- FYI -- TRACK PROFILE Dispatch # 03-05 15-March-2003 Ninth World Indoor Championships in Athletics Friday, March 15 (Birmingham, GBR) -- US pole vaulter Stacy Dragila failed to qualify for the final in the women's pole vault competition today, after missing three times at her opening height, putting an abrupt end to her eagerly anticipated showdown with Russian vaulter Svetlana Feofanova. What do you want to talk about? the usually affable Dragila said as she rushed through the media interview area. I no-heighted. I had a bad day. Dragila, who reclaimed the world indoor record with a leap of 15-8 1/4 (4.78m) at the national indoor championship in Boston earlier this month, was never close at her three attempts at 14-3 1/4 (4.35m). Feofanova, the former indoor world record holder, qualified with a successful clearance at the same height. This was not the first time that Dragila, the reigning world outdoor and Olympic champion, faltered at a indoor championship. She won the world indoor title in 1997, but followed up with disappointing eighth and fourth place showings at the 1999 and 2001 World indoor championships. -ENDS- [ The TRACK PROFILE Dispatch is an occasional update produced as a service to subscribers of the TRACK PROFILE REPORT. Re: t-and-f: Duals/duels ... was List Inactivity
I would imagine that the end of the Cold War, coupled with increased professionalization of track in the late 80s and 90s pretty much put an end to mythical stature of these duals/duels. Isn't one of the US-Soviet Union matches from the early 60s still the record holder for the biggest crowd for a track meet in the US? 100,000 plus? USATF did send out a release on this meet on Friday. http://www.usatf.org/news/showRelease.asp?article=/news/releases/2002-08-16. xml Results of the US-RUS-GBR meet can be found at http://www.tilastopaja.net (you can always count on Mirko). From that, and Mike Prizy's response, obviously, it wasn't. Also, Zbigniew Jonik managed to put up the Zywiec Cup results. Otherwise, it must have been the least active Sunday I can ever remember for the t-and-f list. Fair enough, if nothing of interest is happening. I wonder, though, why there seems to be no interest in the U.S./RUS/GBR meet in Glasgow. I may just be feeling bitchy because my ancient Mac Performa consistently crashes before I can get any information about Dragila vs. Feofanova from the UK Athletics link of the Track and Field News website, or any other result except (surprise!) that Chambers, the UK rep, won the 100m. However, the way this meet has been organized and (non-) reported seems very strange to this old-timer. Forty years ago, the dual meets between the U.S.A. and the U.S.S.R. were, in the perspective of American sports fans, the most important of all track and field competitions, with the possible exception of the Olympic Games, where interest still turned on the medal counts between the two. I would have thought that the best promotion of the Glasgow meet would have featured a renewal of this rivalry, even though USA/RUS must be admitted to be a less equal contest. I remember that, earlier, someone on the list questioned whether USA would field a true national team for this meet. If they didn't, that might explain the lack of public interest (for example, less TV sports mention than arena football or women's boxing!). If they didn't, the question still remains of why not. Subscribers will have noted the welcome increase in contributions by USATF communications staff to the list. Why did they basically pass on this one? Cheers, Roger

Now take a look at Friday's entry lists for men and women: http://www.weltklasse.ch/eng/index.htm The gist of the contest is to predict any new stadium records. Send the following by e-mail to me, no later than 8AM PACIFIC time on Friday morning: EVENT - ATHLETE NAME - NEW RECORD TIME OR DISTANCE The athlete name must be associated with a specific event, and the new mark prediction must be associated with a specific event athlete name. In other words, each prediction must have three parts. You may enter more than one predicted new stadium record, but take a look at the scoring first: 1. Marks must be wind-legal to count as records. 2. Event prediction is correct, but name mark are wrong: 5 points 3. Event name OR mark are correct: 10 points 4. Event, name AND mark are all correct (a trifecta!): 20 points Non-winners who legally break the stadium record will get the same points as above, IF the winner was wind-aided. If the winner was LEGAL for record purposes, then the predicted non-winner will get the same points as above, but decremented by 1 point. So you just predict somebody in every event, right? Wrong, kemo-sabey. Scoring Rule #5: Where the predicted event does NOT result in a new stadium record, you score minus (-) 3. So be judicious in your entries. If you predict a stadium record in an event that's not even being contested Friday, it's an automatic -3, so pay attention to the Zurich web site. If your predicted athlete sets a stadium record in a DIFFERENT event than you predicted, you don't get any points, but you won't get penalized either, as long as SOMEBODY sets a stadium record in the event you predicted. You say you need a prize to make it worth your time? Okay- here's the prize: - A vintage TFN 1978 High School Track Annual. With Renaldo Nehemiah pictured on the cover as HS Athlete of 1977. Golf has been mentioned in this thread. Apparently, golf has been having some problems as well. There was an interesting piece on NPR a few months back explaining the problem with Tiger Woods' domination. t-and-f: IAAF first to introduce EPO testing out of competition
IAAF first to introduce EPO testing out of competition IAAF Release 14 March 2002 - Monte Carlo - The IAAF will be the first international sports federation to test for EPO and related substances out of competition, all year round, and on an unannounced basis. Starting in May, the IAAF will introduce a new procedure, based on the system accepted by the IOC of joint blood and urine testing. Following a meeting of the IAAF Anti-doping Commission on 8-9 March, Professor Arne Ljungqvist, Chairman of the IAAF's Anti-Doping Commission, said: Up until now, all EPO testing in sport has been carried out just prior to, or during, sporting events. The IAAF is again leading the way in the fight against doping. Unannounced out of competition testing is the key to a successful campaign and by testing for EPO as well, the IAAF is sending a powerful message to the cheaters. EPO testing will also take place at all future World Athletic Series competitions, starting at the World Cross Country Championships in Dublin, on 23-24 March. According to the most recent IOC statistics [from 2000], 14,872 anti-doping tests were made in athletics. In the same year, there were 13,568 tests in football, 12,216 in cycling and 5,750 in swimming. -- | Bob Ramsak | *TRACK PROFILE News Service - Editor | http://www.trackprofile.com | *Race Results Weekly - Asst. Re: t-and-f: 42nd annual Los Angeles Invitational
I realize that the LA Indoor meet has a rich history which you spelled out, but, particularly as a midwesterner, I find the notion of an indoor meet in sunny and warm Los Angeles somewhat absurd. Am I the only one who feels this way? And while on the topic of track in LA, what's attendence been like the past several years at the big Spring meets? -- | Bob Ramsak --- |Cleveland, Ohio USA |[EMAIL PROTECTED] - Original Message - From: Gerald Woodward [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Michael J. Roth [EMAIL PROTECTED]; TF Listserve [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, February 25, 2002 1:52 PM Subject: RE: t-and-f: 42nd annual Los Angeles Invitational It is really a shame to see how far down TF has fallen in the L.A. area. I was fortunate enough to run in the first L.A. Invitational meet at the L.A. Sports Arena, and have attended all of the meets except for the years of '65, '66, and '67 when I was living and working in the Central California area and working weekends so I couldn't get down to the meets. Upon relocating to Southern California during the summer of '67, I again started attending the the L.A. Invitational and the L.A. Times meets in 1968. I haven't missed a meet since. L.A. used to support two very successful indoor track meets, the L.A. Invitational (originally called the Sunkist), and the L.A. Times meet at the Forum in Inglewood, pluys the Coliseum Relays, Compton Cup, etc. The meets were always a sellout. The downhill trend started when big name athletes would sign up to participate and then become no-shows. Many people (not true TF fans) started thinking that this was just pre-meet hype to get them there, became disenchanted and stopped attending. The Coliseum relays and Compton Cup died for lack of support and then the L.A. Times dropped their meet; and Sunkist dropped their participation and support of the L.A. Invitational. It was canceled for one year and then Al Franken and his son were able to get enough support to bring it back. Due to reduced funding there is a lack of advertising and promotion and the crowds have dwindled each succeeding year. this year was the worst, in terms of attendance. It is a shame because it is still a good TF meet, it is run very well and deserves more support. As a Track Field fan, I would hate to lose this meet, but with a lack of attendance I don't see how Al Franken can continue to put on this meet. The people attending this meet are the true TF fans as I see these fans at all the local HS, College and Invitational meets such as Arcadia Invitational, Mt. Sac Relays, West Coast Relays (now Bob Mathias relays), Pasadena Games, etc. I know there are more hard core track fans in California and the surrounding states than I see at the meets. We just have to find a way to motivate them to attend and support these meets or they will go by the wayside. If he returns to form, I wonder what the possibilities are for a late season head-to-head with Dvorak, Sebrle and Nool. With the latter competing in the Euro champs, and Macey at both (?) Commonwealth and Euros, a match up at Talence in Sept (?) is most likely improbable. BTW, his announced early season appearance schedule in the US --Modesto Relays 5-May and Pre Classic 26-May, along with Mt SAC and Nationals-- is if nothing else a nice effort to get a well-known name out there and competing. The men's 5,000 field of five Kenyans, including world champion Richard Limo, and two Ethiopians, including Olympic gold medalist Million Wolde, made a farce of the race. For the first 10 1/2 laps, they loped around the track with no intention of trying to run fast. Then, they picked up the pace a little with two laps remaining, before going to an all-out sprint over the final 400 meters, which was run in 51 seconds - extraordinarily fast for a 5,000-meter race. Two-time Olympic silver medalist Paul Bitok of Kenya won in 15:26.10, slower than women's winner Olga Yegorova of Russia (15:12.22) Tuesday night and nearly three minutes slower than the world record. The time of 12:52.90 for 4,000 meters was slower than Ethiopian Haile Gebrselassie's 5,000 world mark of 12:39.36. -Original Message- From: alan tobin [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Thursday, September 06, 2001 9:50 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: t-and-f: Goodwill 5000 results I'm calling BS on this one, must be a typo. Allowing for the fact that these quotes come from Arabic athletes speaking English, they sound exactly like something Prefontaine would have said. Paid attendance... While I don't know for sure, I can say that whenever I entered the stadium through a gate, I was told to either walk around a turnstile or use one of the pass gates. So I'm assuming that media and others with passes were NOT counted in the official tallies. The Edmonton SUN, by the way, in a HEADLINE identified Geb as Moroccan, so I wouldn't trust absolutely everything they published. To reiterate gh's point, I will go to the grave kicking my lame behind for NOT paying the meager $150 a scalper was asking for tix to the Atlanta 200 final. An absolute bargain in retrospect. Most connections to/from Edmonton, and even Calgary are for the most part bookedduring the opening/closing days. I spent five hours this morning (very late in the game, I know)finalizing my itinerary, which includes planes, trains and a bus ride from Vancouver to Seattle... The down side is that I'll miss the opening and most of Saturday, but the BIG perk is a full-daytrain ride via Rail Canada through the Canadian rockiesfrom Vancouverto Edmonton... Granted, I limited myself to airlines honoring my sacred stash of frequent flier miles, but most airlines reported little to no availability.Asked the gracious US Airways operator with whom I planned my itinerary for more than two hours-- "What's going on over there, anyway?"
