Agreed! I remember Boston having a "Euro XC' race at Franklin Park with hay bales and stuff, but indeed, FP is a grass track. The last 2 NCAA XC courses have been pretty good, especially Lawrence, KS. Cross Country IS a Field event. Apart from US most cross country is run in fields, and I suppose even golf courses are just well manicured fields. *grin* Keep talking cross country its as much a part of Athletics as sprinting. Re: t-and-f: No XC Please!
The whining that goes on about cross country is ridiculous. Listen, collegiate cross country discussions and results are easily just as important as talk concerning collegiate sprinting, which we see all the time on this list. What's more, it's ten times better than the endless junk we have to read about drug busts and other bureaucratic track crap. I'm excited about the Olympics as much as anyone else, but there's no need to start this anti-cross country crusade against a part of the sport that so many of us enjoy. T. Boulder's sister city, Eugene (part of the "Tie-dyed Triangle" - Eugene, Boulder, Berkeley), has the same mind-set. This reminds me of Boulder trying to control the population growth of the city in the 70's. They passed a Zero Population Growth ordinance which spawned the fastest growth and the biggest building boom in the history of the city. I think that this was a deliberate plan to get the season going. Well done! It could also be argued that MANY more people are actively involved in cross-country at this time of the year than are actively involved with the Olympics. For lots of folks, that's where their day-to-day interests have shifted since high school and cross-country seasons are about to get underway in the next few weeks.
