Re: mirror drivers error when installing jaws

2017-05-23 Thread Jeff Weiss via Talk

Well, I called microsoft again, and I think they solved the problem.
The support person created a new user profile on my computer--and now Jaws
18 works just fine.
He explained that something was probably corrupted in the user profile, and
creating a new user profile, and then copying my settings to the new profile
seemed to work!

I couldn't have guessed that in a million years!!!

Subject: mirror drivers error when installing jaws

After installing the 64 bit demo of jaws 18, I get an error message saying
the freedom scientific mirror drivers did not install correctly.
The message says first try to re-boot, and if this does not work, try
running the install again with the

/type repair
switch. I did this with both the regular and non-tandem versions of jaws
18.
I called the jaws help line at 800-444-4443 and they said call the microsoft
disability desk. I did, and they remotely updated my graphics drivers.
Still no joy

Has this happened to anybody else? If so, what can I do?
any help appreciated!!!

Re: Reading the Status Line in JAWS

2017-05-23 Thread Tom Kingston via Talk

Nick,
The status bar is essentially an information window in many programs.
For example, in most editors of any type, from Notepad to Word, it gives
you things like the current line, column, and page. In Thunderbird it
says how many messages I have in the current folder and how many are
unread. In Explorer it says how many items (files and folders) are in
the current folder and how many are selected.
In a development environment I use it gives a quick tip for the command
I just typed.

Hth,
Tom

Obviously there's no status bar on the desktop. But in Thunderbird there
is a window that looks and acts like a status bar, but it is not
(technically speaking) a true status bar.
It's a good example of the never-ending uphill battle screen-reader
developers face. Windows has a specific status bar window that can be
created and yet it is not uncommon for developers to just tack on
another standard window that accomplishes the same purpose visually.

number of items selected. It will read how many pages, words and some
percentage in Office Word. It will not read anything from Thunderbird
that should represent any type of status information. I can go back to
the main folder list in Thunderbird and get a number of how many unread
messages there are for all unread messages, but they are not broken into
different accounts.

If the key is insert-page down, then I never have anything in the status
line except for the file explorer. I am used to having a status line in
Thunderbird that tells me how many messages there, how many are not read
and in some cases, how many have been deleted. I have tried using both
the insert-page down on the number pad and the ones on the six-pack. It

Is there a JAWS equivalent for reading the status line in a window in
MS Word or other programs? Reading the top or bottom line doesn’t
give enough information. If one can’t identify the cursor position,
using MS Word is almost impossible.

the dectalk will not work with a dead battery. even if it is plugged into a
c
power.
if you still have it do not throwt it away yet.
if you remove the battery it will start working with the power supply again.
but get help.
you have to remove the 6 screws on the bottom of the case. but be careful
when
you pull the two haves apart. the speaker is in one half and the speaker
wires
connect to the surcuit board on the other half of the case.
you only have about 2 inches of space.
there is a flat battery pack. its about one quarter inch thick. by 2 by 3
inches. when i had mine the battery connector was connected to the other
half
of the case with a removable nylon connector. once the battery is removed
and
put back together it should start working when it is plugged into a c power.

Many thanks for your recommendation. It comes with high confidence based on
your expertise. Thanks, too, for the tutorials. I worked back through all of
them again today and finished saving the transcripts -- all while using Jaws.
I'm getting there! Laptop laut will be tomorrow's experiment.

FWIW, I use the laptop layout on both laptop keyboards as well as full
size keyboards. The nice thing is that I don't lose the functionality of
the number pad even with the laptop layout. Yet, I gain so much more
flexibility. I would recommend this for many users.

Hi, if using the laptop layout, you can activate the Jaws window by
pressing Control Shift Caps lock J. So, basically, it's the 3 keys along
the left side of the keyboard with the letter J. It really works.
Personally I run Jaws in the notification area so it's out of the
alt-tab order.

Greeting WE Migrants -
I am learning Jaws navigational keystrokes as I migrate from beloved
WE to

Jaws. Using the insert key as a primary Jaws modifier key is very awkward
for me. On my keyboard the insert key is the top left key on the
so-called

"6-pack" of keys located just above the arrow keys. The Jaws command to
begin "Say All" (like WE "Read to End") is Insert-down arrow. That
requires
an awkward contortion of my right hand or an inconvenient reach with
my left
hand for the insert key as I press the down arrow with my right hand.
Other
navigational commands use the insert key as the modifier with keys
that are
usually typed with fingers on the right hand. I am finding these
keystroke

combinations to be frustrating.
Obviously Jaws users have been using this illogical keystroke combination
for years. I must be missing something about how to do so efficiently. I
have read about altering navigational keystrokes in Jaws, but I don't
want

to have to redesign the whole set of them. Bottom line is that I have a
couple of questions:
1. Is there some alternative to the insert key as a primary modifier
key for

navigational keystrokes in Jaws? The WE Control-Alt combination with a
single letter key was much more ergonomically efficient. To longtime Jaws
users: I am looking to you for help or encouragement for the insert key
awkwardness - any help?
2. Can I reprogram my computer or Windows 10 to recognize some key of my
choosing to function as an additional insert key? For example, could I
sacrifice the Control key on the left side of my keyboard to become an
insert key to use as a modifier with keys typically typed with my right
hand?
I hope that I am not obsessing over what turns out with experience
manipulating Jaws to be simply a curious quirk for a new user. Any
help will

be appreciated.
Many thanks -

Re: Installing JAWS

2017-05-23 Thread Dave via Talk
Hi Dave, Dave on this end too.

You should get another Email that will give you the key to copy and
paste into the authorization field.

You might want to call Jaws, 1-800-444-4443 to get faster action in
getting this key.

RE: Reading the Status Line in JAWS

2017-05-23 Thread Joseph Norton via Talk
Speaking of elegance of code, when using the Bard Express program (a program
from NLS that makes using BARD even easier), Window-Eyes has the most robust
support for it. JAWS does read all the information, but, not the column
headings. NVDA reads the column headings, but, truncates the information (like
the annotation of the book, and anything longer than the displayed text).
Narrator doesn’t perform well with it either, but, can’t remember the exact
behavior. SuperNova also doesn’t perform too well with it either. Oh, yes,
Window-Eyes also reads both progress and status information beautifully with
this program.

There were things GW needed to play catch-up on, but, this is true with JAWS.
Window-Eyes obviously has a better handle on the system tray, going beyond what
is actually visible on the screen, whereas JAWS, as many have already observed,
only reads what is visible. The folks at GW were working on the OCR aspect,
but, JAWS handles it pretty well, even letting you do mouse clicks if you need
them. If development had continued, I have no doubt that WE would have
eventually developed it. Maybe the folks at VFO can learn from some of the
Window-Eyes features. After all, I presume they have the source code. Maybe
some of its features can still be incorporated into JAWS. As many have also
observed, Window-Eyes has a better handle on handling progress bars, even
giving you options on how much, and the kind of feedback you can get on
progress and scroll bars.

It's a good example of the never-ending uphill battle screen-reader

you have to remove the 6 screws on the bottom of the case. but be careful

you only have about 2 inches of space.
there is a flat battery pack. its about one quarter inch thick. by 2 by 3

RE: Alternative for Insert as Awkward Jaws Modifier Key?

2017-05-23 Thread via Talk
Hey, everybody.

I have never used JFW before and I'm waiting for a reply to a query Beth
from VFO sent me regarding how I plan to use the screen reader--home,
professionally, other. I've followed all the threads of WE users switching
to JFW and this one has me confused, and, a bit worried. Doesn't JFW have
the ability to stack modifier keys? For example, can't you set a find
feature to Control-Shift-F like the Window-eyes keystroke? Are JFW users
stuck with only two modifiers: Caps Lock and Insert?

Hi, I have a Logitech keyboard and my insert key is way up on the top
row where the F keys are on the righthand end. There are three more keys
after the F12 key one of which is the insert key. I have the 6 pack of keys
but there's no insert key in there.

Ed, don't you have a regular keyboard? If you do, the Insert key would be
part of the Numpad set of keys, and not the one above the delete key.

I do know that there are laptops that DO NOT have the Numpad; for this, if
memory serves, the CapsLock key is also being used as a modifier.

Re: Alternative for Insert as Awkward Jaws Modifier Key?

2017-05-23 Thread Carol and Roger via Talk

Hi Pam,

Generally speaking, the braille cell type of keyboard would use the dot
2 as the insert key. That is what I have and that key does work with
programs that require the insert key, Window-Eyes and Jaws included. Of
course, it is about as difficult for right-hand key commands as the
numpad insert. I might try the sticky keys mode and see what happens.
I did not like the caps lock key at all.

Hi:
If you really want a laugh, go to Youtube and type "computer scams" in

In a couple of cases, the caller is stringing the scammer along, until
the scammer wants the money, then the caller informs him that he is
being recorded and the recording will be uploaded to youtube. Then
the scammer hangs up.

Jaws versus WE

2017-05-23 Thread Don H via Talk
Two issues I have with JAWS after making the switch is that Jaws does
not announce the index in file explorer or in Thunderbird.
Also the copy and paste when using them within a web page work very
poorly. You can get the indication that something is selected and hit
control c to copy it and when you paste it with control V, it is not
what you expected. For example I tried to copy a amount like 51.52 and
when I pasted it it was 2.00. Never seen such errors when copy and
paste with WE or NVDA.

I got the PO just as you have and it does not contain the activation
code. I called VFO and was told the code isn't sent until the PO
generates a invoice. They checked if the invoice had been created and
when it was they sent me a Email with my serial number and activation code.
So my recommendation is to call 1 800 444 4443 and hit the 6 key option.

It's up to you on which one you want to use. However, 2016 will have the
so-called latest and greatest features. Only you can decide if you want
those new features. In terms of accessibility, Office 2010 will work
with Jaws 18.

Re: Reading the Status Line in JAWS

2017-05-23 Thread Tom Kingston via Talk
I haven't installed JAWS yet. But I assume the problem is that JAWS does
not possess the elegant code Window-Eyes does to determine the logical
status bar when there is no actual status bar, which is the case on the
desktop and in Thunderbird.

Regards,
Tom

Thank you, but that was not the answer. The window is already

my Carol folder, it says 465 items. If I am on the desktop, it says
5/23/2017. If I select some random items from a folder, it then says x
number of items selected. It will read how many pages, words and some
percentage in Office Word. It will not read anything from Thunderbird
that should represent any type of status information. I can go back to
the main folder list in Thunderbird and get a number of how many unread
messages there are for all unread messages, but they are not broken into
different accounts.

I have finished beating this dead horse, so I am walking off into the

If the key is insert-page down, then I never have anything in the status
line except for the file explorer. I am used to having a status line in
Thunderbird that tells me how many messages there, how many are not read
and in some cases, how many have been deleted. I have tried using both
the insert-page down on the number pad and the ones on the six-pack. It
says absolutely nothing. Oh yes, somethimes, when I am on the desktop,
it will tell me either the date or the time, depending on what mood it

Is there a JAWS equivalent for reading the status line in a window in
MS Word or other programs? Reading the top or bottom line doesn’t
give enough information. If one can’t identify the cursor position,
using MS Word is almost impossible.

It is interesting that you say Window-eyes is more intuitive. Of

thought they were going to give me Vert Plus. My first windows screenreader

So true, but don't you remember from the good old days. Jaws is the
screen reader built by God, there is none better. Thou shalt not put
other screen readers before me. There are always things that one screen
reader does better. Doug has always said that.

Re: Reading the Status Line in JAWS

2017-05-23 Thread Carol and Roger via Talk
Thank you, but that was not the answer. The window is already
maximized. Ctrl-numpad page down says absolutely nothing. If I move to
my Carol folder, it says 465 items.

I have finished beating this dead horse, so I am walking off into the
sunset, grin!

Is there a JAWS equivalent for reading the status line in a window in MS Word
or other programs? Reading the top or bottom line doesn’t give enough
information. If one can’t identify the cursor position, using MS Word is almost
impossible.

Hello,

Some time ago there was a free version of windows 10 for us on this
list. Is that still available at this time? I am using windows 7 and
hope to get Jaws before the end of July. Thanks!

Installing JAWS

2017-05-23 Thread Dave Basden via Talk
I filled out the form online to get JAWS authorization, was phoned to
ask whether I wanted the home or office edition, and received an
zero-charge invoice for JAWS and my one SMA from Window-Eyes. Now I
have downloaded JAWS and am trying to install it. I am not sure what
I am supposed to enter as the authorization number though. I don't
see anything that looks right in the purchase order I received via
email. Was I supposed to get a separte authorization number? Confused!

Re: Alternative for Insert as Awkward Jaws Modifier Key?

2017-05-23 Thread Carol and Roger via Talk
I would like to suggest, based on my own experience, if switching a
desktop keyboard setting to laptop setting, it might be worthhwhile to
make sure Jaws is in the alt-tab setting. Trying to use the capslock key
to get into the Jaws setting was very tempramental for me. It only
worked on a very few occasions and I did try many times to use it. I am
certain there was some operator error, but even I can't have messed up
that badly, LOL!

Carol, happily using my insert key!

Greeting WE Migrants -

I am learning Jaws navigational keystrokes as I migrate from beloved WE to
Jaws. Using the insert key as a primary Jaws modifier key is very awkward
for me. On my keyboard the insert key is the top left key on the so-called
"6-pack" of keys located just above the arrow keys. The Jaws command to
begin "Say All" (like WE "Read to End") is Insert-down arrow. That requires
an awkward contortion of my right hand or an inconvenient reach with my left
hand for the insert key as I press the down arrow with my right hand. Other
navigational commands use the insert key as the modifier with keys that are
usually typed with fingers on the right hand. I am finding these keystroke
combinations to be frustrating.
Obviously Jaws users have been using this illogical keystroke combination
for years. I must be missing something about how to do so efficiently. I
have read about altering navigational keystrokes in Jaws, but I don't want
to have to redesign the whole set of them. Bottom line is that I have a
couple of questions:
1. Is there some alternative to the insert key as a primary modifier key for
navigational keystrokes in Jaws?
Any help will
be appreciated.
Many thanks -

Re: JAWS Software Synthesizer Volume

2017-05-23 Thread Tom Fairhurst via Talk
It is good that one can do this, but it's sad that JAWS, the program said to
be the anointed screen reader for all time, does not provide a way to adjust
the synthesizer volume. On another note, it seems that help with nmouse
movement and adjusting how many pixels the mouse moves with each key press
is difficult to find. Yet, since I really don't worry too muich about either
of these, I enjoy those things about Window-Eyes. Nontheless, I am learning
my way around JAWS and getting along well. As has been stated in previous
posts, there are merits and pitfalls with all screen readers.

Hi,

But you can, in Windows 10, adjust the volume of JAWS as a whole.

Go to System Tray, find your sound card and right click or press
applications key, then Open Volume Mixer. Now you will see a volume
specifically for JAWS. If you turn that down, it will turn Eloquence down.

All the best

This is only true with Eloquence.

If you are using Vocalizer or SAPI speech, you can adjust volume of the
speech.

To do this, press Insert-j for the JAWS window. In the options menu, select
Voices. Under that, select Voice Adjustment. You’ll be asked to select a
default voice profile. Once you select Sapi or Vocalizer profile, you will
find that there is now a control you can tab to in order to set the speech
volume.

Hope this helps.

I think that the Word Nav app was inspired by a feature that was already in

same keystroke that is used with web browsers in JAWS.

Good question. At this point we have no plans on taking down app central

I would hope as long as Window-Eyes can continued to be used it would be up

I have 2 insert keys on my standard keyboard. I most often use the key above
the delete key, the one in the "6-pack" of keys. The numpad insert key is
proving to be more convenient for navigational controls and invoking "Say

Thanks for the helpful response. Much learning and orientation left to

No, I didn't address your questions particularly, I want to leave those to
others to deal with more succinctly.

Re: JAWS

2017-05-23 Thread Kevin Huber via Talk
Hi Don:

I remember when I switched from JAWS to Window-eyes all those years
ago,, the neater interface was one of the main reasons that I
switched, as well as not having to change to a different mode when I
wanted to use the Mouse cursor, or JAWS cursor. But that's all in the
past now and we will all get used to the JAWS way of doing things.

I have read about some Jaws keystrokes using Capslock as a modifier. I have
not experimented with its general use yet. That is next on my list as I

Subject: Alternative for Insert as Awkward Jaws Modifier Key?

Any help will
be appreciated.
Many thanks -

RE: Alternative for Insert as Awkward Jaws Modifier Key?

2017-05-23 Thread Ed Culpepper via Talk
Thanks for your testimonial. I am finding use of the numpad insert key to be
handy with navigational controls and reading with "Say All." I have read
through the table of Jaws keystroke controls. I haven't tried them all, but
I anticipate difficulty with the combinations requiring the insert key and
letters typically typed with the right hand. I have not yet experimented
with using the Caps-lock key as a left-hand alternative to the right-hand 2
insert keys (6-pack and numpad). I'll try that next!
Thanks for your help.

hmmm, i always use numpad insert plus numpad8 for jawskey plus
downarrow with no trouble at all. numpad 4 is left arrow, numpad2 is
uparrow, and numpad6 is right arrow.

2017-05-23 Thread Loy via Talk
I've been a WE user for about 15 years. before that I had enough sight to use
a computer without a screen reader. I tried JAWS and WE demos and at that time
found that Window Eyes was much easier, navigation was more logical to me than
JAWS. I plan to keep using WE as long as I can and I'm going to install JAWS

mirror drivers error when installing jaws

2017-05-23 Thread Jeff Weiss via Talk
After installing the 64 bit demo of jaws 18, I get an error message saying the
freedom scientific mirror drivers did not install correctly.
The message says first try to re-boot, and if this does not work, try running
the install again with the
/type repair
switch. I did this with both the regular and non-tandem versions of jaws 18.
I called the jaws help line at 800-444-4443 and they said call the microsoft
disability desk. I did, and they remotely updated my graphics drivers. Still
no joy

Has this happened to anybody else? If so, what can I do?
any help appreciated!!!

information. If one can’t identify the cursor position, using MS Word is almost
impossible.

Re: Forms Question

2017-05-23 Thread Lloyd Rasmussen via Talk
There is also another mode, imitating Window-Eyes' behavior, that goes in
and out of forms mode with the Tab and shift-Tab keys, but not with the
arrow keys. This is one of the instances where JAWS had to create a feature
that Window-Eyes already had. It is not the default, however.

Hi, you can change forms mode to manual. This will make it so you will
have to always press Enter on edit boxes to turn off the virtual cursor
and enable forms mode. This setting is found either in the startup
wizard from the Jaws window help menu, or by pressing Jaws-6, typing
forms, and arrowing down to the forms mode settings and making the
necessary changes.

Re: Thunderbird accounts

2017-05-23 Thread Tom Kingston via Talk

Neville,
Deleting messages and emptying the trash folder does not actually delete
anything. It only removes them from view. You need to compact folders.
I've been using TB for years, have countless folders and messages, and
my %AppData%\Thunderbird folder is 59.5 Mb.
There is a threshold you can set to be prompted to compact folders in
one of the menus, but it rarely seems to fire for me. So I've gotten
into the habit of just doing it manually via the File menu every month
or so when I perform other system cleanup tasks.
I have two email accounts, close the tree up to the top level of each,
e.g. tom.kings...@charter.net (27) closed, Alt-F File, F Compact
folders. Wait a bit and the status bar will display how much data was
deleted.

Here's a link to Mozilla's article on compacting.

Hi Raul,

Thanks for your reply on saving the Thunderbird folder. Unfortunately
Tbird saves a lot of old messages in the Profile folder which can go
back years even though the trash folder can be kept clear.

My Profile folder grew to around 6 gb although theTools, erase
recent history option was used from time to time. While doing a scan
with a newly installed Bullguard, old messages from years in the past
were displayed on the screen as they were scanned. These messages even
included those from an old email address which had been previously
removed from the system.

The fact that old messages, which I thought had been removed when
deleted, were still around came as quite a shock.

I used the Mozilla backup tool without saving emails but with address
settings and with a fresh install of Thunderbird, the new Profile folder
with three account settings came to under 20 mb.

The Tools, remove recent history option is used more frequently these
days but my Profile folder continues to grow. It is currently around
140 mb and when it gets to around 150 mb, the process mentioned above
will be used again.

This is why I asked if there was a simple way of saving the account
settings in a similar way to saving the address book. It would make the
setting up of a new clean Profile folder easier.

Cheers
Neville.

Neville, if you open the %appdata% folder, look for the Thunderbird
folder and save that. Please note the percent symbols around

Hi Raul,

In a previous message, you mentioned a file in Thunderbird which

Thanks

Hello,

Some time ago there was a free version of windows 10 for us on this
list. Is that still available at this time? I am using windows 7 and
hope to get Jaws before the end of July. Thanks!

Norene
