New to the list, saying hello

2021-02-20 Thread Jane Carona via Talk
Hi everyone,

Doug just added me to this list, so I'm sticking my toe in the water to see
who's here and to say hello.

I was a very happy GW Micro customer, from way back when we had Vocal-Eyes,
and was dragged kicking and screaming into the world of jaws. I still hate
Jaws, and have never really come to terms with it. I'm thinking of
reinstalling Window-Eyes, but the last version I have is 9.0, and I don't
know how well it works with Windows 10 and Office 365. Anyone still using
Window-Eyes on a daily basis, and how well does it still work?

Jane, you'd probably need Version 9.5.4! Like you, I MISS WINDOW-EYES
beyond words. Jaws and its awkward keystroke combinations send shivers over
and above my spines, yet it remains the ONLY DOMINANT GAME in town; sounds
like it is backed by some interesting politicians who are good at the game
of punch, punch and punch some more.

You did say in your post that Doug added you to the list; hmm, could you be
referring to Doug Geoffray? Is it possible that he's still lurking around
and just listening to us as often as he could?

Window-Eyes, from its grave, continues to play ball well with Windows10
despite what a few pundits say. I have not migrated to Windows10 yet; what
I have set up is working for me and I choose to LEAVE WELL alone. I am a
lot busier TINKERING WITH APPS in Androidville such that the thought of
CROSSING THE REDMOND BRIDGE is just not there for now. Anyhow, I'll keep on
running and let others set the records a bit more straighter than I may have

JAWS Key Commands

2021-02-20 Thread Richard Petty via Talk
All,

I too miss We terribly. So many things worked so well about WE and so many
keystrokes and settings were well planned and well organized. There was a
nice logic to commands the WE team developed and maintained over time. We
was (and can still be) an outstanding program--three years beyond
production.

I'm gratified to learn Doug Geoffray and Jeremy Curry are still connected
through affiliation with Microsoft. Their thoughtful leadership in access
continues to be needed--and I hope and trust this means they have both done
well past GW Micro and Ai Squared.

All that being written, I have found using the JAWS laptop keyboard layout
more comfortable--even on a full keyboard. This arrangement offers an added
JAWS command key. With that addition and other laptop key combinations, it's
possible for the user to issue more commands without having to move too
terribly far from home row keys. That's made a big difference for me. Also,
I've found FS leaders such as Jeff Bezos to be responsive and most helpful.

By the way, to improve my efficiency, I've taken this one step further: I've
remapped my keyboard.
* The Left Control Key is to the immediate left of the A Key.
* To accommodate this change, I moved the CapsLock key to the left of the
Spacebar
.* The LeftAlt key is now at the lower left of the keyboard where the Left
Control key previously was located.

Decades ago, Microsoft did locate the Left Control key to the left of the A
key, but inexplicably changed the configuration. As much as this key is used
for navigation, I found it worthwhile to make the change. Key placements are
now like those on the keyboards I first used with computers. To make this
change, I used the SharpKey utility developed by Randy Rantz. SharpKeys is a
utility that changes the Windows Registry to make specified keys to "act
like other keys" If you try it, be sure to make a backup of the Windows
registry. Be very cautious and pay close attention as you work with the
utility. It's not necessarily intuitive. Again, make a backup before
changing the registry.

Hope this helps.

well as well. I do miss Window-Eyes and wished Doug and gan could have been
able to better promote the product so they could have beaten JAWS.

Re: OT about Ipad email list

2021-02-20 Thread David Hoff Jr via Talk
I have not seen a reply to your request yet, So I will try.

There is a web site call AppleVis.com which list a lot of apps which
work well with the iPad. I might have spelled the web site wrong, but a
google search will help you find it.

You will probably initially need help the first time you turn it on.
You have to establish some user information and when I set mine up my
wife did that for me since voice over wasn't initially available at the
first startup, which my wife also did for me. But once that is done, you
can use voice over to do most everything else.

If you like listening to books, look into the app named 'Voice Dream
Reader'. It is probably the best one available. Bookshare and Guttenberg
books and many others are easily accessible through 'Voice Dream Reader'. For
news and many magazines look into 'NFBNewsLine, registration help is
easy through the NLS Library if you are a member. Also NLS Library has
an app to download and listen to books.

If you are a Bible reader there are many Bible programs which work
fairly well. Also many music apps for many types of music. as well as
internet radio stations which are available for free.

I still prefer my laptop for browsing the internet. Safari, the Apple
browser, does not work well for me. Word Processing and spreadsheets
still work better for me on the laptop. The iPad on screen keyboard
works but is very tedious for low vision users.

If you have other questions just ask and I will help if possible.

Sadly, we will find it more and more important to upgrade to Windows 10. I
did after I attempted to secure support from the Microsoft Disability Answer
Desk about a problem with Microsoft Office and Windows 7. I was told that
they could not assist me because Microsoft no longer supported Windows 7. I
did upgrade to Windows 10 in December. It has been a difficult transition,
but useful because there are still times when I need Microsoft tech support.
I can at least receive that support now.

By the way, I have been told that Window-Eyes will continue to work well
with Microsoft Office versions up to Office 2013. I was told that Microsoft
changes to the spell check function are a problem using WE. I am using
Office 2013 and it's working well. I have not verified that WE doesn't work
well with Microsoft 365, the new Microsoft Office. Again, that's what I was
told, although from a knowledgable source.

Re: New to the list, saying hello

2021-02-20 Thread Bernie Perella via Talk
Hi Jane,  I also had used WE since about the mid 90's. Back then, I
resisted making upgrades to my system and usually didn't upgrade WE
immediately after a new release was issued.  But, about ten years ago, I
realized this was not a good strategy.  AT the time I was using both WE
and IE.  But, as I would frowse the net, more and more sites indicated
that I needed to upgrade my browser. Finally I gave in and decided to
switch to Chrome because at that time WE did not work at all with MS
Edge.  Generally, I have been satisfied with Chrome but is it perfect,
no.  When Windows ten came out, I did upgrade and then I decided to
switch to a copy of WE for office.  Again, I found this generally good.
I will admit that I don't use much of office and I wish I had a better
understanding of it.  However, I manage to get along with what I have to
do.

As far as your situation, if you have windows 10 and want to use WE for
office, you should get a copy of WE 9.5.4.  Some time ago, I think it
was Rod Hutton who posted a dropbox link to the 9.5.4 file.  I have been
searching my old email messages to see if I can find the link.  I
actually have the file on my Win 10 machine but will have to figure out
how to send it.  I am not sure at this time.

One more thing.  I have been allowing my system to update windows as we
go and am still able to use WE for many things.  Hope this helps.  Bernie.

Testing my options update

2021-02-20 Thread Brenda via Talk
Hello list,
I am just testing to see if my options updated because when I sent an earlier
message it did not post to the list or I just didn’t get notification of it.

Jane, I’m glad to see you still can communicate with Doug, not sure how you did
that. it did occur to me that with him and Jeremy at Microsoft even if they
aren’t directly working with narrator I suspect they are giving input.

Glad to hear I’m not the only one having difficulty with windows 10 with jaws.
I would love to see more people go to narrator especially if window eyes gets
weaker. actually narrator reminds me of window eyes.

is a good place to check the price, although I always recommend buying
software very carefully on Amazon. Reading the reviews shows many have bad
experiences.

You could call Microsoft Sales at 877-696-7786 and surely they will give you
a price over the phone.

Hi! I hate jaws, too! I am still using window eyes. I got somebody to
send me up to the last version, since the last disk I had was 9.0. I don't
have windows ten, but I have some problems with things, lately. I don't
know if it is my computer, or window eyes, or the browsers. Mostly, it
works for me. But like I said, I don't have ten. Pam.

RE: New to the list, saying hello

2021-02-20 Thread Steve Jacobson via Talk
I would also suggest calling Microsoft's Disability Answer Desk at 800-936-5900
And ask how best to upgrade. There have been some special upgrade prices for
people using screen readers. Although some have expired, there is always a
chance that some could still be in effect.

You also have to consider your hardware. I had a parallel port card that would
not work under Windows 10 and even kept it from loading. I think the upgrade
is worth it, and mostly it will go smoothly, but set aside a day or even a
weekend to do it. If it only takes a couple of hours, then you have time to
party. Sometimes screen readers have to be re-installed. If you are using
Window-Eyes, be sure you have a copy you can install from a CD or a disk image.
You will be able to run Windows Narrator for most of the upgrade. Also make
sure you have software that you use a lot in a form that it can be
re-installed. The upgrade process does move a lot of software, but it isn't
perfect. Some hardware, Scanners and Printers particularly, will not have
drivers under Windows 10, but this is pretty rare.

I am not trying to talk you out of this because I think it is worth upgrading.
However, your upgrade will go better if you are prepared for any difficulties
ahead of time.

Best regards,

Steve Jacobson

I upgraded a couple computers a couple years ago, and did not tell
window-eyes not to run. It locked up the saystem and I had to start
fvrom scratch losing everything on that system. The next time, I think
I either uninstalled window-eyes or told it not to run at startup, not
sure. Anyhow, that one worked as expected. I have a lot of stuff that
won't run under ten, so run seven 32 bit system which will much of my
older stuff such as my old pc braille program.
