Re: updated all of my 35 apps

2017-07-22 Thread Jeff Weiss via Talk

Most of them will work just fine.
I know of two that won't work as they are if the web page closes. They are:
Install Packages
and App Get
because both of these get apps directly from the page.
Also, the WE update app wouldn't work, but VFO acts like there will be no
more updates to Window-Eyes anyway.

The rest should work fine whether the web site exists or not.

Hi Jeff,

I did download all of the apps. My question would be whether there will
be any apps that will fail to work because VFO removes the WE web
pages. I know there are many that are stand-alone, but are there any
that are specifically tied to, let's say, the GW-Micro site? Thanks.

This won't help with any new updates or new apps, but it's probably a good

If VFO terminates App Central or whatever it is currently called, how many

Olusegun,
All I can say is good luck with Android.
I'm hoping NVDA will fill the need when it comes. But be it that I could
get JAWS for free I downloaded it just to have it. Android is not a

one problem with the install apps program is you have to manually enter the

i created a we app in the root directory so it would be easy to type in and

also all 309 apps only takes up about 120mb of disk space. it took about 5

I am writing to see if there is a problem with updating my Window-Eyes
apps on App Central. It’s been several days, and I have not heard
anything—nor have I seen the updated apps come out. I updated all of the
35 apps below so that any error messages will come to my home address
since I am now retired. Please allow these updates to be posted, or let

Hi Jeff:
When I get to install, do I actually to theinstall and when the install is
done, is that when I choose install or is it before I choose to install
I just don't want to screw up something in win eyes and we all know why.
Also when all apps, is this all apps I now have or is it all of the apps on the
we apps downloads page?
Sorry for the dumb questions, but,(smile)

I would suggest that everybody down load the install packages
app,
install it,
choose all, and then there is an option to download all the packages and
store them in a folder on your computer.
This is what I have done, so if I ever want to use one of these apps, I have
it ready to install.
This won't help with any new updates or new apps, but it's probably a good
idea for those of us who plan to continue to use Window-Eyes.

If VFO terminates App Central or whatever it is currently called, how many
apps, generally speaking, will no longer work with WE? In other words,
would it be adviseable to download all of the apps one last time to make
sure we can have access to all of our favorites or is it possible that VFO
might find a way to have them disabled? Thanks.

RE: updated all of my 35 apps

2017-07-22 Thread Olusegun -- Victory Associates LTD, Inc. via Talk
Tom, as a nonconformist, Window-Eyes was everything to me! Now that it's
gone, I am hastily learning to use an Android tablet. Why? Because I want
to ditch Windows and its associated screen readers; I will have two devices:
An Android phone for everyday talk to the world, and Android tablets for
business use. I will not pay a blue cent to have scripts rewritten for Jaws
in order to be able to use apps that work almost literally out of the box
using Window-Eyes.

I'm not taking the Jaws transfer offer, and I'm never upgrading to Windows10
or any of its cousins! I'll keep running both Windows XP Pro and the
Windows7 Pro computers that I have and just let them die naturally so that I
can commit their souls to Purgatory.

In the long run anyway, Android will be the cheapest alternative for me.
And I won't miss Windows when I kick it out, but I do certainly miss so many
folks from GW Micro, and I'd have long-lasting memories of Window-eyes!

Sincerely,
Olusegun
Denver, Colorado

Not to menschen that the two brothers gloated about the demise of Window-Eyes
on a tech talk presentation. They're JAWS beta testers and they are so bias
that they actually delighted in announcing Window-Eyes demise.

2017-07-21 Thread Tom Kingston via Talk
I don't believe the bias is on Sky's part. As much as I do and have
despised Freedom Scientific for real reasons for decades I would feel
bad if JAWS were terminated. This is because I have a lot of friends who
depend on it heavily. And no screen reader is everything to everyone. So
none can completely fill the void for everyone. And having had been a
Window-Eyes beta tester for many years, were I doing a podcast I would
feel sorry for the people who were losing what worked for them. And I
would express that honest feeling. But that's too sophisticated for
today's self-absorbed immature culture.

never hosted scripts for JAWS. That alone shows where users stand.

Unfortunately, seems like this is yet another way they try to push the
final point of WE as quickly as possible. Next thing is, they will turn
down the lists, my guess is. Perhaps the only reason why they still keep
the lists running, and App Central up, is that people actually make use
of them.

If now, they will not allow updates to be posted, that would mean noone
would use the App Central, so it is all good to hit the road for the
trash-bin. And, the day too few people are active on the list, down
which road does that take them? :)

Or, are they just awaiting the next failure of the server, then all the
sudden just determining that no more service will be done on the
machine, and we are left in the blue. The biggest trouble I find, is
that VFO simply do not care to inform anyone. They sit there till things
have reached a point, then just pull the plug. And if they even can pull
the plug unnoticed, that is their fun. Or, why have we seen no
announcement of the decision not to update apps, anything before. Too
sad, as that will make it very hard for developers to do what they
actually could, to make the screen reader stay up-to-date with the
newest technologies out there.

Someone setting up a server, might be a good idea. And first it has to
be done from scratch, why not open a service that would offer users a
cross-platform service. That is, it could hold not only an app store,
but a whole app mall. What I am suggesting is, go to the new app mall,
and here open the link for WinEyes, if that is your screen reader. You
will have the chance to pick and choose from WE apps. Or, if you are a
Jaws user, go to ap mall, open the Jaws link, and choose apps from the
list. Same with NVDA.

Sure, no apps are going to show up in all the sections, but if you
compare it with a real mall, you don't get milk in the sportsware store
either, do you. The big benefit of a combined service, would be that
people had ONE place to go, no matter which screen reader they used. It
might even encourage app developers, when they see, and read about, the
different apps for other screen readers. That way, maybe some developers
would be able to come up with more cross-platform like solutions. Of
course, it even could have a subsection for IPhone apps, or those for
Android, that are specialldesigned for visually impaired. Or, at least,
it could hold some reviews of such apps. Further, if there could be a
place for developers to go, and pick up articles and tutorials for how
to build apps under different environments, this could be yet another
way of encouraging more new apps and features to see the market, under
any of the screen readers covered.

Thing is, I wonder how long we have to get things going. As the end-date
of the Jaws transmission offer draws near, I have a tiny feeling we
might not see the list servers upp running, all that much longer. OK,
they might be using external servers, but I don't know if there is a
subscription for them to keep renewed, in such a case, likely it won't
be kept alive.

If anyone here thinks I am trying to be all negative, let me appologize.
My one and only point was to accept the facts, sad as they are, and
suggest that something else could be done to at least get the best out
of the existing situation.

Even while the web site is active, this seems to be just an unnecessary
termination of services which all of the current Window-Eyes users are using.
I already posted all of the updates a week ago, but aparently no more updates
will be approved.

I am writing to see if there is a problem with updating my Window-Eyes apps on
App Central. It’s been several days, and I have not heard anything—nor have I
seen the updated apps come out. I updated all of the 35 apps below so that any
error messages will come to my home address since I am now retired. Please
allow these updates to be posted, or let me know if there is some problem.

Thanks,

I agree with you.
It could be done but like you say it would be a massive undertaking, not
to mention the cost.

Not to menschen that the two brothers gloated about the demise of Window-Eyes
on a tech talk presentation. They're JAWS beta testers and they are so bias
that they actually delighted in announcing Window-Eyes demise.

RE: App mall was Re: updated all of my 35 apps

2017-07-21 Thread Sky Mundell via Talk
Hi Brenda. Sky here. Having a app mall would be amazing! Unfortunately I
don't have the skills to set up one, otherwise I would set up a app mall!

Subject: App mall was Re: updated all of my 35 apps

The app mall is an excellent idea if there is someone talented and motivated
enough to set it up.

Back in the day GW encouraged people to make their apps and websites accessible
to screen reader users. An app mall would be a good place for them to get info
about how to go about it since they can no longer contact GW. Apple has always
encouraged app developers to make their apps accessible, so even links to the
appropriate Apple webpage would also be a good idea.

I am clueless about jaws scripts and do use a few W-e apps and maybe someday
will work on learning NVDA. Having jaws and NVDA scripts along with Window-eyes
apps in the same place would be very handy for end users too.

As for the server, I think it was moved when it disappeared for a while during
June +-. Doug said something to the effect that as long as we kept topics
relevant VFO would probably keep this server running. But it appears Doug is
gone and there is no one to look out for W-e user interests at VFO.

Not sure if Aaron Smith is still at VFO - he may be our only hope. Or perhaps
a long-shot would be pleading our case with Eric Damery (sp).

as a Window-eyes user, I find this list very helpful as I occasionally try to
use jaws. I just can't seem to stick with jaws because I think in Window-eyes.
At least on my win7 machine things should work fine for a while.

I'm keeping emails so if this list does disappear suddenly I will at least be
able to contact some folks. If something happens all of a sudden, maybe we
could all meet on the Blind Tech list or the jaws list (not sure what the
contact info is) or another list someone mentions in response to my email.

Brenda

Honestly when they decided to discontinue Window-eyes they already said it all.
Window-eyes in their minds is gone and the only reason for its existance is to
act as a vehicle to gain more users for Jaws. Why is it so hard to find scripts
for Jaws? A lot of things are a lot more difficult with Jaws. It is very very
sad all this has happened. Window-eyes outperforms Jaws on mlb.com and
tunein.com and many other sites. Oh well, it is what it is, thanks for reading.
Jaws does seem to work beter in some embedded players as far as reading
controls.

Dear Jeff,

Some of us do intend to use Window-Eyes as long as it is viable.

Would it be possible to place your updated apps on a public folder
somewhere where we could still access them?

apps. From the response I just received, no more updates to app

Even while the web site is active, this seems to be just an
unnecessary termination of services which all of the current
Window-Eyes users are using.
I already posted all of the updates a week ago, but aparently no more

Re: updated all of my 35 apps

2017-07-21 Thread David via Talk

Re: updated all of my 35 apps

2017-07-21 Thread Jeff Weiss via Talk

I would certainly be interested in such a thing if somebody could set it up.
I am thinking of a Window-eyes app page which is privately run. It could be
an app repository, or it might include more things, like a new Window-eyes
list, etc.

Dear Jeff,

Some of us do intend to use Window-Eyes as long as it is viable.

Would it be possible to place your updated apps on a public folder somewhere
where we could still access them?
