Well for starters avoid top posting in FOSS mailing lists . If you
felt that I was shouting I don't mind .

The motivation to upload videos has been lacking but I being in some
distant land couldn't make it to SOTM but watched the stream which ran
on a poor netbook ,was waiting for the high quality streams to get
uploaded .

I am *still* looking out for the videos and I hope OSM as a community
could make something similar to what debian does .

True,
from an end-user POV, its hard to see what goes on in the background.

So its a toss-up, for time. Spending volunteer time and effort on
remote attendence, or on the people who actually showed up in person.

Having a remote attendence conference can probably be an event in its self.

So ya, if i was actually there in person, i'd go for spending time
actually meeting people in person. Afterall, we can connect with
everyone using the mediums we already have.

So i resind my comment, and hope to be able to be there next year. :-)
and i look forward to seeing whatever videos soundbytes photos that
were made :)

Cheers,
Sam

Re: [OSM-talk] sotm2010 video stream?

2010-07-15 Thread Floris Looijesteijn
hey,

bandwidth was not the problem. it was on a wired connection with plenty of
bandwidth. the plan was to try things out before friday but we didn't have
the time to do that...

we we're gonna use the firewire connection on the professional panasonic
camera in the venue but didn't get that to work and we tried zillions of
things. we spend most of the friday trying to work it out.

so we had to come up with an alternative which was getting some usb video
capture devices and plug them in via composite video signal.

unfortunately the netbooks we used weren't fast enough to compress video
realtime on a reasonable quality. we couldn't find other windows laptops
(with audio in) which we could use all weekend.

there are two ways to stream to ustream.tv, one is the dedicated app,
which turned out te be a cpu-hogging app and the other through flash.
unfortunately the flash app did some weird chopping of the video. but in
the end (from saturday 12.00 or so) the audio was allright which is the
most important thing if you ask me. i also didn't get much complaints
after getting this to work so i thought it was ok.

greetings,
floris looijesteijn

Sure we will hire translators next year
More seriously, finding volunteer translators is not easy (understatement)
and paying one let alone several is very expensive.
As for bandwith, it is not cheap either if you really want good speed and
some locations may not have the capacity to host our load.

Thanks, thats a good reason why it didnt work right.
There was only so much bandwidth going to the hall (from the outside)
so no matter how many 'stream boosters' are setup, its still alot of
volume.
Perhaps it should be on the list for the next SOTM11 ? To make sure
that there is multiple bandwith sources, since Ustream.tv 'could'
become a large part of the audience where remote attendence is
equal/greater to physical attendence. Multiple laptops can be set up
to stream the event live with 'co-hosting'. And tinychat.com can also
be used. (and different languages promoted with translators) :)

Hey,

We are actually planning to do this again, but no guarantees, that's why
it's not mentioned yet :)

There are cameras in both rooms and we will be recording everything for
viewing after the conference. We'll be testing the streaming in the
following days.

For now: keep your eye on www.stateofthemap.org !

If you are going to the SotM and want to volunteer to help out with
videostreaming for a few hours, please let me know!

A donated netbook that is sitting in a chair and pointed to the
speaker podeum, with Ustream.tv running and capturing everything that
is going on is EASY to set up.
It just needs to be checked every so often to make sure its still
recording & airing live.

You could even stick a nametag on it as 'Iama Mapper'.
