Geez, I killed two birds but the third was still blocking. Is there
any way to get an error message out of OSRM when it throws up its
hands and can't find a route? It's pretty easy to move the pins around
and watch a route go from normal to insane. The difficulty is in
determining exactly why. If, for example, OSRM could say "You asked me
for a motor vehicle routing on a way that doesn't permit motor
vehicles", I could have found the problem immediately.

 > Let us know if that fixes the problem

It hasn't fixed the problem yet. That's why we need some way to force
a reload, or tell the user how long they'll have to wait before
checking.

Maybe if you've hit the edit button, that should invalidate your cache?

If you look at the bridge segment of the highway going north, it has the
tag motor_vehicle=no. Change that to yes (or just remove it) and it will
most likely work. I didn't change it so you can see for yourself. Besides,
it could be limited to foot/bike traffics.

Let us know if that fixes the problem

I've already used it to fix three routing problems (an overly long
oneway, an access=no that no longer applied, and a bidirectional
motorway). Except they're not active. They haven't fixed anything. The
routing is still wrong. Look:

http://www.openstreetmap.org/directions?engine=osrm_car&route=45.0034%2C-74.7403%3B45.0119%2C-74.7379#map=11/44.8909/-75.1077

We need two more things: 1) a list of common problems that cause
misrouting, and 2) an estimate of how long before fixing a problem
results in fixing the routing. I'm sure the latter is a caching /
updating problem, but we need to let people know. Especially useful
for the younger mappers who aren't confident that taking away that
inappropriate one-way fixes the routing problem they saw.

Those two pieces of information could probably be supplied by having a
link on the routing panel that says "Is this route wrong?" That could
point to a wiki page explaining how to help.

In this case graphhopper's "correct", because

but instead "access:foot=yes". It used to have foot=designated on it

Nice to have routing on the main site, but

This has revealed quite a big nasty that has happened in Hampshire recently!

I've tried some foot routing out and it appears that someone has done a mass
addition of access=private to large numbers of ROWs in Hampshire.

See

http://www.openstreetmap.org/directions?engine=graphhopper_foot&route=50.96550%2C-1.17800%3B50.96090%2C-1.18780#map=17/50.96265/-1.18302

for instance

It should be routing you along the footpath, instead it routes along the road.

Not sure who's done this but will investigate later - I sincerely hope it was a
mistake!!!

Ahh, that would probably do it. I have removed 'construction=trunk' and
'motor_vehicle=no' tags as they are incorrect.

Will check back in a few days to see if it fixed the routing problem.

Absolutely... the data is to blame!

The point I was making is that routing often highlights that there is an
issue, maybe a quick link to add a note (or something) that local/expert
mappers could validate would be of benefit.

Yes, but It would be nice if there were someway to report/analyse

For example driving from Crowsnest Pass to Calgary suggests a valid (but
longer) route than anyboby/everybody would actually take.

If I jump across to 'project-osm' to give it a suggestion it really gets
confused:

It seems that the dragable 'vias' refuse to attach to the north bound

is pick up highway 2 in Nanton and continue north on it to Calgary.

Is there a *Route To Here* option? In the form that:

-> I give the destination (coordinates plus name) as GET parameters
-> the destination is shown and already filled in
-> the user can give his/her "from" location
-> and press the "Go" button

Tagging for the router surely means that you are tagging roads based on
their finer properties, single-lane or dual-lane, asphalt or gravel etc.

Maybe some investigating as to why the router didn't pick a more optimal
route is in order. When testing the router, I discovered a number of errors
related to how we mapped access to ferry routes.

That's the beauty, you can try out other engines as well. For example,
Mapquest has a big advantage, it takes into account turn restrictions when
"via" is a way. OSRM just ignores those turn restrictions. That means that
OSRM will rote through U-turns which are not allowed.

Hi
really nice. Thanks to all persons involved. It's a very nice integration,
looks good and feels good to use =)
But I still have two ideas xD
1) right-click menu for OSM.org --> many users are used to have some
right-click menu for the map. For OSM.org possible options could be: Set
Start, Set End
, Whats around? (query feature like when you use the button on the right
panel)
2) customization: atm there are two router options shown for every routing
type (car/pedestrian/bicycle). Maybe you could add some more routing
options (thought of Graphhopper for car) and than people with an account
could decide which one they want to have displayed.

The second idea isn't really important. It's more a feature if you don't
have other things to do ;). But the first idea is more useful.

+1 to that! Hope it doesn't lead to an outbreak of "tagging for the
router" though... You know, down/upgrading roads to "improve" the
results...

My first quick test in Kent yielded a route (about 6 miles) which while
perfectly viable, no-one in their right mind would take. But that is
probably more of a quirk of OSRM than anything else.

Thanks to all those involved in adding routing to OSM. Routing is a major
enhancement to OSM. As Rob said, it will help us fix mapping errors that we
may not have noticed without the feature.

Thanks,
Clifford
