Nobody has claimed that everything leading up to the license changed was handled perfectly, with hindsight I would suspect that a couple of things would have been handled differently by everybody involved. But I have not seen anything that would indicate that the outcome of any such better (from a formal point of view) process would have been different than what we got from what actually happened (ok, naturally we would now be arguing over what a valid contributor vote should have been 4 years ago, but it would still be arguing over process, not the result). Could we, just perhaps, at last get over the continuous bickering about stuff that transpired a long time ago and move on? With other words: please get a life. Mér hefur sýnst að þegar verið er að henda út eldri gögnum og nota í staðinn LUKR gögnin þá verði einfaldlega að hafa í huga að það þarf að tengja stígana við göturnar hvar sem almennt má telja að rétt sé að fara á og af stígunum. Ég skoðaði þetta aðeins í kringum Ferjuvog í Reykjavík t.d. þar sem mér sýnist eldri gögn hafa verið þokkalega tengd en ný gögn alls ekki. Þetta býr til eyjur af stígum sem rútunin (með tilliti til hjólreiða t.d.) tekur aldrei inn í myndina og niðurstaðan verður víða fjarri því sem best gæti orðið. Getur verið að það sé til betri leið, en mér sýnist einfaldlega verða að tengja stígana gatnakerfinu á viðeigandi stöðum. En þá fæst líka ágætis virkni á þetta. Komst einnig að raun um að reglan í OSM er: Ekki vera að flækja málið með gangstéttum Það er reyndar sjónarmið, finnst mér, að á meðan við erum enn ekki komin inn með allar helstu götur almennt, þá sé kannski ástæða til að láta vera að merkja allar gangstéttar meðfram öllum vegum sem nú eru komnir inn. Vinnunni væri betur varið í að þétta veganetið og auka við aðrar staðarupplýsingar á svæðum þar sem enn er mikið óunnið. En hins vegar finnst mér alltaf ástæða til að líta á stíga sem liggja aðskildir frá vegum þannig að þá eigi að kortleggja líkt og vegina, jöfnum höndum (eins og stíg meðfram Suðurlandsbraut t.d.). Þegar einstaklingur lítur á kortið og skoðar hvaða leið hann getur valið á milli tveggja staða (óháð því svo hvað sjálfvirk rútun myndi gera í slíku tilfelli) þá er okkur eðlislægt að draga þá ályktun að meðfram götum á Íslandi eru gangstéttar og því óþarfi kannski að kortið sýni þær sérstaklega til að teljast vel nothæft. En hins vegar hjálpa stígar sem kortið sýnir einstaklingnum við að velja leið í slíkum tilfellum. mbk, Baldvin ___ Talk-is mailing list Talk-is@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-is

Í anda OSM ætti að skrá alla stíga óháð því hvort þeir liggja meðfram götu eða ekki. Ertu að meina ómerktar þveranaleiðir gatna sem tengja saman stígastubba og gangstéttir þegar þú segir meðfram götu ? Þveranaleiðir? En annars var ég sérstaklega að hugsa um (steyptar) gangstéttir sem liggja meðfram götum. Það ætti ekki að sleppa því að skrá stíga né tiltaka sérstaklega að þá ætti ekki að rendera. Hmm. Skil ekki alveg. Það eru bara þveranirnar sem tengja saman gangstéttir og þannig myndar net, sem við erum að tala um að merkja með render=no. Spurning hvort við finnum fordæmi um hvernihf menn leysa þveranir, til dæmis í borgum sem nota ridethecity ? Eða gæti verið að þetta sé lýst í almennri skjölun OSM ? Því miður hef ég ekki einfalt svar við því en hingað til hef ég reynt að minnka vandamálið með því að tengja gönguleiðir þvert yfir götur. Það geri ég með því að merkja ómerktar gönguleiðir (en rökrænar) sem crossing=unmarked. Hvernig stígar sem leiða að enda götu og stoppa þar eru leystir hef ég ekki svarið við. Það er augljóst að við viljum ekki að það komi fram á almennum kortum en þurfum samt að tengja það á rökrænan hátt sem routing forrit ráða við. Ah þú notar stiga sem samheiti á path í skilningi OSM ? Sem saqt þú ert að tala um vegi, gangstéttir, en líka hús og girðingar etc ? Neibb, stígar í hinni venjulegu merkingu. Gögnin eiga ekki að tiltaka hvort það eigi að teikna eitthvað eða ekki. Það ætti að vera mál hvers renders forrits fyrir sig hvort og hvernig það merkir Þú hefur eitthvað til þíns máls. Takk fyrir það. þá stíga. Ég hvet annars fólk að merkja lækkaða kanta og aðrar aðgengisupplýsingar ef það getur, því það gagnast hreyfihömluðu fólki og blindum afar vel. Öryrkjabandalag Íslands hefði örugglega áhuga á þessum upplýsingum og gæti mögulega veitt okkur aðstoð við að bæta OSM gögnin hvað það varðar. What you can (should) do The most important thing you can do is given in the first part of the guidelines above: Help in contacting those mappers who have not rendered their decision yet. You can either find out the largest (previous) contributors in your local area (city, county etc.), check whether they have agreed yet and contact those who haven't. Or you can go ahead and do the same with the largest contributors from your whole country. (Lists of mappers have been prepared for many countries, see below.) The second part, remapping, is more like an ultima ratio. If a mapper has not agreed and will not agree, you may remap their contributions. Although it is not stated in the LWG minutes, this should also apply to mappers who have been contacted unsuccessfully. If someone really cannot be reached anymore, remap. But if there's still a chance that you can avoid this work by writing a simple e-mail, try that first.

[Talk-GB] Field Data Scotland
I have recently been offered field data under the open knowledge licence from the Scottish Government. This is the first time I have interacted with the government and would like to make use of the data but at the same time not step on anyones toes. Although I have not yet seen the data I have been told that it will mainly include the shapes and positions of the fields. I have not done any large imports of data before and I am aware of the difficulties that this can cause. My question is has anyone ever imported field data before and are there any problems that I should look for before even contemplating doing this. cheers Bob___ Talk-GB mailing list Talk-GB@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-gb
[Talk-GB] Canal Maps of the 19th Century
I've just found out about this CD of 1. Three maps produced by George Bradshaw of Railway Timetable fame. The maps were produced in 1830. They show most of England and Wales at a scale of ½ inch to one mile. They show the canal and railway network as it was then. They show the canal level above sea level and the entry widths of the locks. 2. The Walker Nichols and Priestly canal map of Great Britain. This map also produced in 1830 is at a scale of 5.6 inches to one mile. This map also shows the canals but in addition it shows the location of mineral deposits that would be transported on the canals. 3. The Joseph Priestly Book detailing and describing each of the canal layouts. The is an 800 page reference work. http://digitalarchives.co.uk/index.php?option=com_virtuemartpage=shop.product_detailsflypage=flypage-ask.tplproduct_id=3Itemid=83 aka http://goo.gl/5y1kv Yours for £20. -- Andy Mabbett @pigsonthewing http://pigsonthewing.org.uk ___ Talk-GB mailing list Talk-GB@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-gb

From: bobhawk...@waitrose.com To: talk-gb@openstreetmap.org Date: Sat, 13 Aug 2011 16:25:08 +0100 Subject: [Talk-GB] How to use relations for The Chiltern Way and its extensions The Chiltern Way has a North Extension, a South Extension and, new in 2010, a Berkshire Loop. Perhaps this is true of some other long-distance paths. The Chiltern Way is shown at http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/WikiProject_United_Kingdom_Long_Distance_Paths as only 33% complete. As the South Extension and part of the Berkshire Loop are within my area of interest in South Oxfordshire, I should like to gradually add them as relations to the already-mapped ways in order to increase that percentage. I should be interested to learn other mappers' views: should the three extensions be part of one existing Chiltern Way relation, or relations in their own right, or both? If part of one existing Chiltern Way relation, how can the three extensions be identified separately? I think each part should be a stand alone-relation, and then the whole way would be 'super-relation' which groups the smaller relations together. Re: [Talk-us] Safe Routes to School Mapping Toolkit concept
On Sat, Aug 13, 2011 at 9:52 PM, Nathan Edgars II nerou...@gmail.com wrote: This will require objective criteria for grading a route. Does SRTS ignore complications, such as badly-designed bike lanes and especially sidepaths decreasing safety, and kids choosing the sidewalk over even well-designed bike lanes? How is safety of crossing a street determined? How about safety of walking in the street? Very good points to raise, but I don't think SRTS has any standard definition of a safe route. I'm still learning about the program, but I believe the federal government distributes funds to states which administer the distribution, so definitions would likely vary from state to state. As a first cut I've decided to only route along highway=footway/cycleway/path/steps/residential/service, and to disallow routing along highway=service/residential if it crosses a highway=secondary or above. Obviously there's more to it then this, so I'd like others to provide their input. To be truly comprehensive we'd need to include width of outside travel lane, width of shoulder, etc., but we'll get there when interest has been shown. One thing that might be useful in OSM would be marking crosswalks (or intersections?) where a crossing guard operates during school commuting hours. It appears that there is the supervised=yes/no tag for that, though there's only 1600 uses for that. As a suburban example for discussion, I volunteer the local elementary school: http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=28.41182lon=-81.49269zoom=17layers=M Buena Vista Woods Boulevard has bike lanes, but kids generally ride on the sidewalk. There is a crossing guard at the west end of BVW, helping kids cross Apopka Vineland Road into the gated community. The path to the east (through the park) is open during school hours, and allows kids from the two subdivisions to the northeast to reach the school (I don't know if anyone from Sand Lake Point, the northern one of the two, does, but I often see kids and parents riding on the sidewalks of Sand Lake Cove and onto the path). Thanks for your example. I've been experimenting with Terra Centre Elementary School, as they're the test case for SRTS in Fairfax County, Virginia: http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=38.785521lon=-77.297382zoom=18layers=M Over the summer they're adding a sidewalk to improve access to the school. Unfortunately, according to the distance maps I made this weekend, it doesn't increase the number of households that are in walking distance to the school! Perhaps with the new sidewalk they should do some redistricting... -Josh ___ Talk-us mailing list Talk-us@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-us
