Re: [Talk-GB] [Edinburgh] Road Names

2010-03-23 Thread Bob Kerr
Very Cool,
I think it would be worth going over this at the next meeting, maybe we could
put up a wiki page with the roads that are missing and plan the mapping party
for areas that are particularly bad.
Excellent work
cheers
Bob

Cool I've hooked up a script to do a comparison with the street names in
OSM and have put the results up at:

http://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0Ah4ejhysSkMOdDktM0Jyb3Z5TGFQTjZkOHJ4RHlnVGc&hl=en

Overall on the first pass we match about 75% of the road names, although
there are lots of 'Z' Class roads that we don't have.

I have also done a area by area comparison and have included this on the
second tab of the spreadsheet some area's look very good and some quite
poor. I hope to spend some time looking at an area and figuring out
where we don't match in order to get any bugs out, but if anyone wants
to make any comments then the spreadsheet *should* be writable.

Also let me know if there are any other fields that it would be useful
to pull out of OSM.

Cheers
Chris

Re: [Talk-GB] Edinburgh Meetups: Glasgow Central Scotland

2009-08-27 Thread Bob Kerr
Hi,
I aim to start fairly slowly, My aim is to get a regular meeting in Edinburgh,
I think there may be enough people and interest to have a pub meeting once
every two months. I am starting by getting people to
add[[Category:Users_in_Edinburgh|YOUR USER ID HERE]]
on to their user page, this gives me a rough list of those that are in
Edinburgh and may be interested.
Shaun told me about the excellent
http://www.itoworld.com/
Osmmapper
http://www.itoworld.com/static/osmmapper
to find out who has been editing recently and I have e-mailed them.
Once we meet up which I think will probably be the first Tuesday in September
then we can decide the details. I am hoping that if we have meetings every two
months then I can do the same in Glasgow and we can alternate months
It may be a little time before I get to Glasgow but if you know of a good
location to meet at there I will post it to the Glasgow project page.
Cheers
Bob

Hi Bob,

Sounds like a good idea.

I organized a meetup in Glasgow back in Feb '08. There were a few
Edinburgh people came through but in the end there weren't as many
people came as had posted to the list or on the wiki (there were only
4 of us in the end I think). Despite the poor turnout was good to put
some faces to the edits.

Since then I've not done much mapping but am going to start to try to
get back on top of things. I'd try to make it along to anything
organized in Glasgow.

I was trying to figure out when that was, I remember there were 4 or 5

some mapping parties outside of the cities.

According to
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Past_Events_2008 there was one on
25th Feb 2008
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/index.php?title=WikiProject_Scotland&oldid=81610
is the version of the page with the pub meet info.

I'm needing a good excuse to take a little holiday up there in some
fresh air. ;-)

If I remember correct, that was one of those days I got into Glasgow
early and lost the data from my wander around some of the city centre
streets collecting data. And it wasn't the day I was mad enough to
cycle the whole way back home:

I've a couple of copies of sheet 50 I think. Anyone got a lighter?

I'll try and be there for just after 7. Meet in the family area to the
left of the main entrance as you are going in (same place as scotlug
does(!)).

I've put my contact details on wiki:

Maybe add yourself if you are hoping to be there...?

May I propose (a slightly unoriginal choice of ) Counting House on
George Square; it's central, close to train station for Edinburgh
folks,

and cheap.

As for mapping - Glasgow city center is mostly mapped in terms of
streets but doesn't have too many POIs; so if you want to do some
mapping before hand maybe grab some on the way there

You don't know what I'm shoving up my sleeve for Bike Week.

I'm currently thinking of sometime in the next ~fortnight as it is

Sorry if I'm moving things forward a bit too fast.

I had meant to say the Thursday 28th Feb (this gives people with a

Glasgow sounds good yes. Edinburgh had a meeting last year

There is a ScotLUG meeting that night and there are quite a few Glasgow
based mappers (5 i think) that will at that so couldn't make an osm meet.

This was mentioned on IRC the other night and other dates were discussed
- 27th / 29th (?)

Someone want to go ahead and make a decision then we can ping a few
other local people that might not read talk-gb?

I had meant to say the Thursday 28th Feb (this gives people with a busy
schedule 2 weeks notice) , we could arrange to do a few hours of mapping
and then meet in a pub at 8 or 9?

I would like at least one micro mapping party to be done by then! You
don't know what I'm shoving up my sleeve for Bike Week.

I'm currently thinking of sometime in the next ~fortnight as it is a
more local meetup, rather than a larger one.

Yes, it's George Coulouris: george at coulouris dot net

We (I say 'we' with my Cambridge Cycling Campaign hat on, though I'm
only peripherally involved) in Cambridge are working on a cycle mapping
project with George as an extension to the CCyC's photomap and journey
planner, so your mixing up has a curious parallel! More as it develops.

Looking at the calendar on the wiki there is Chris Fleming who is
going to talk to the Edinburgh Linux Users Group on June 7th. Your
event doesn't appear to be in the calendar. [0]

I'm currently in Sighthill in the west of the city. [1] Going by
JOSM, I'm currently one of the main mappers. I should have time and
space here, if you need wifi/power/shelter.

Currently there is no real strategy in Edinburgh as far as I'm aware.
The wiki page is very out of date. [2]

There are a lot of areas that have segment, but no ways. I have been
going through many of them and turning them into ways so that they
show up on the map. However I have not been naming them. It would be
a good thing to get them named, and this would be able to be done by
those who don't have GPSs. The areas that I know of that need
wayified, names added or more work to tidy them up are primarily:

Search for name FIXME and use the maplint layer on the
informationfreeway are my recommendations for finding some areas that
need some TLC. The very city centre seems to be well covered.

The main public transport company in the Edinburgh area is Lothian

cheap day tickets. [4]

those who don't have GPSs. The areas that I know of that need
wayified, names added or more work to tidy them up are primarily:

Search for name FIXME and use the maplint layer on the
informationfreeway are my recommendations for finding some areas that
need some TLC. The very city centre seems to be well covered.

has an issue with the docks, that I'm not sure how to fix.

The main public transport company in the Edinburgh area is Lothian
Buses [3]. They have a flash route map which is useful, and fairly
cheap day tickets. [4]

I'm living in Edinburgh, and was just composing a message to ask who was
doing the talk at Debconf!

I'm doing a talk for the Edinburgh Linux Group this Thursday and hoping
to generate additional interest in Edinburgh, and it would be great to
hook up to any activity happening over Debconf as well as meeting up
with others :)

In terms of mapping there are a few holes in the city center that need
filling, in order to produce a complete "City Center" Map. But pretty
much the Northern Half of the city (from George Street to Leith) is
still needs detailed mapping, all this this is within walking distance
or a simple bus ride. I'll be more than happy to help to co-ordinate and
provide local knowledge.

Also if there are any others in Edinburgh it would be great if you could
make it along to my talk this Thursday, 7:30pm sharp at Edinburgh
Training and Conference Venue on St Mary Street, then it would be great
to see you.
