2022-03-31 Thread Brian Prangle
I had a good nose round yesterday and updated the area. The disabled space
opposite Boots also has "Taxi" marking on the road so what the status is is
anyone's guess. The issue is moot as there is a trench right through most
of it so I've amended it to amenity:disused. I've added the 7 disabled
spaces round the corner on Albert Street and New Meeting Street. I've also
referenced the TRO in a note tag. I've used access=destination as this
seems correct from the TRO

Re: [Talk-gb-westmidlands] Disability wheelchair curb project

2021-11-11 Thread Brian Prangle
Hi Mark

You have a great project to undertake. It's unlikely I'll have the time to
do a workshop- even a brief one (and I suspect there will be no others
either as we're all volunteers) but the resources I've indicated below
should be a good guide. You know OpenStreetMap already so these resources
should be sufficient for you and there's nothing that can beat learning by
doing! If you have any questions or problems that crop up then email the
local talk list but frankly there's more activity on the national talk-gb
list and you're more likely to get a rapid response there

Happy Mapping

Brian

Why OpenStreetMap?
is a great and brief introduction

https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:wheelchair is a good place to
start for how to map wheelchair access

Wheelmap  is good app for
showing whether establishments have wheelchair accessibility

Wheelchair routing
is a German project but has a wealth of information on highway attributes
to survey and how to map them (in English)

If you only want to map dropped kerbs/ tactile paving then this page
 is a good guide

There are a variety of mobile apps to assist in mapping but I find them
clumsy and slow to use and for beginners it could get overwhelming.
Vespucci is the leader, Mapzen is another. Others may have a different
opinion.

Best to either annotate a GPS logger in the field (multiple mobile apps
available) and then upload at home/office/cafe to a laptop and edit with ID
(beginners/intermediate) or JOSM (advanced)

Whilst surveying it's easy to miss things so a photo is a good idea
.Kartaview or Mapillary are two "OSM-approved" apps that will upload photos
to your editor of choice, and also make them available to other mappers

Perhaps a cheeky request but would you (or someone else) be able to provide
a short training session on how to update the map (probably with the online
tools, rather than JOSM) if I get a few interested of the project team
(probably 2 or 3) on board.

The project people would probably be able to update the map off the top of
their head, rather than having to produce intermediate OS-free maps.

Hi Andrew

Good to hear from you. It doesn't seem that complicated. Just add
cycleway=lane to the relevant stretches of road if there are to be
cycleways on both sides or use cycleway:left=lane or cycleway:right = lane
as appropriate if not. Add a tag like description:COVID19=temporary for
future selection for easy maintenance. Glad to help out editing these if
you can provide a rollout timetable and a map that isn't OS copyright
tainted. Also I'd like to include the local neighbourhood active travel
plans plans for Kings Heath and Lozells with the proposed installation of
modal filters and the pedestrianisation of York Road. Again a rollout
timetable and an OS copyright-free map would help obviate the need for a
ground survey. (perhaps you should publish public-facing maps on one of the
OS open-licensed products? Or perhaps you are and are just adding the
OS-required attribution, if so some clarity would be helpful.) For the
modal filters best practice seems to be just convert a short stretch of the
road to highway=cycleway with perhaps barrier=modal_filter. And finally if
you could provide me with details of the school street programme ready for
September rollout I'd be grateful. I've placed notes on each of the schools
affected but I need details of which bits of which roads are covered and
what times .Perhaps there's already a web page up?

Good to be planning work with you again

Re: [Talk-gb-westmidlands] Black Country Geopark

2020-07-14 Thread Brian Prangle
Hi Andy and mappamercia

I've delved into this some more and it appears that the Geopark is a
collection of pre-existing sites so mapping them as a relation shouldn't be
too difficult. However the list of sites is published on the geopark
website <https://blackcountrygeopark.dudley.gov.uk/sites-to-see/>with a
copyright claim so presumably we need to get explicit permission to use
the list.(blackcountrygeop...@dudley.gov.uk). @Andy do you feel like
writing a nice diplomatic email to them?. I'll take a look at the UNESCO
resources to see if they have a copyright free list. Assuming we get a list
that's useable we could create a multipolygon for all the existing parks,
nature reserves that are included but there are a number of sites that
might be nodes - so how to include them?.

Proposed tagging
heritage=1
heritage:operator=UNESCO
operator= Black Country Geopark
boundary=protected_area
protect_class=3;98
protection_class= Global Geopark
start_date=2020-07-10
name= Black Country UNESCO Global Geopark
website=https://blackcountrygeopark.dudley.gov.uk/bcg

Interesting project for us to complete. Pity they have a google map to show
the extent of the geopark

Re: [Talk-gb-westmidlands] HS2 phase 1 updates - Solihull interchange station

2019-12-16 Thread Brian Prangle
Thanks for the update Andy: drove past there on Sunday and things have
moved on considerably. I've updated appropriately. Do you think it's
necessary to have the compounds identified by name and entrance? They're
going to be around for a couple of years and folk will need to get to them.
I've also updated some demolition areas in Birmingham. I'm on the updates
list for HS2 for Warwicks and Birmingham now. Do you think it would be a
good idea for OSMers to adopt a stretch of the HS2 route and keep an eye on
it - possible set HS2 up as a UK OSM national project with its own wiki
page ( you might already have done this). Thanks for all your sterling
efforts in getting the data in.

Regards and Merry Xmas

Re: [Talk-gb-westmidlands] Swift Payzones .

2019-06-20 Thread Brian Prangle
Hi Andy

All the original swift collectors were mapped in collaboration with TfWM.
They're tagged as per this example

amenity=vending_machine
category=Interchange
name=The Pavillions
operator=TfWM
payment=no
postal_code=B4 7SE
public_transport_ticket=Swift Card
source=TfWM;survey
top_up=yes
vending=public_transport_tickets

TfWM have shown no interest in maintaining this data in OpenStreetMap
despite repeated prompts from me,so as they've rolled out they haven't been
added.

Payzones - nothing done so far. Good luck with this - don't know how you'd
tag this - perhaps you'll just have to invent something- perhaps the
talk-transit mailing list might help

Our May meeting is scheduled for Thursday this week and we're in Coventry
this month. Mapping first from whenever you can get there: we've chosen the
area around  Far Gosford Street
which looks in need of
improvement (lots of retail premises missing so fits in with our UK
Quarterly Project). So that we don't trip over each other and duplicate
effort let us know what you intend to do.If you've got another area of
Coventry you'd like to map that's OK too.
We'll meet for chat eats and drinks at the Botanist(not mapped yet!) in

[Talk-gb-westmidlands] Collaboration with shire tansport authorities

2019-04-23 Thread Brian Prangle
Hi everyone

Mainly for west mids mappers but cross-posted to talkgb for a wider
audience.

For some time I've collaborated with TfWM who make extensive use of
OpenStreetMap. Together we've refreshed the entire NapTAN dataset for the
West Midlands and we're engaged on an ongoing basis in solving data quality
issues where the OSM data throws up errors with their bus routeing software.
Word spreads and at a regional meeting of shire transport authorities
there was a request for contact with local OSM volunteers in the following
areas:

Herefordshire, Shropshire, Staffordshire, Stoke, Telford, Warwickshire,
Worcestershire

If anyone wants to volunteer please get in touch with me and I can put you
in touch. It will mainly involve dealing with errors they spot such as
missing/wrong roadnames, missing/wrong roads. With TfWM there's been an
average of one of these week, sometimes bunched together followed by weeks
with nothing - so not a heavy workload and worth the effort to improve the
data.

If my experience is anything to go by, there'll be an initial peak and then
they'll realise, with a little prompting, it's easier and quicker to fix
the errors themselves. But it's good to have an initial period of
handholding as I think they are respectful of causing any damage

Re: [Talk-gb-westmidlands] A34 cycle route

2019-04-16 Thread Brian Prangle
Hi Andy - a great improvement over on-road cycle lanes. Very safe but
dreary given the nature of the road and the traffic volume alongside. Not
much cycle traffic on it yet so uneducated pedestrians walking along it not
yet a problem. Where the cycle lane is furthest away from the road
pedestrians seem to prefer it as it makes them feel safer. It will be
interesting to see how much vehicles respect the give way signs where the
cycle lane crosses a road without a crosssing and indeed cyclisst where
they meet a give way sign onto a shared space. It will need regular
sweeping as it is already accumulating a layer of grit from the traffic on
the road.
The shared space around some bus stops and pedestrian crossings could get
interesting once cycle traffic builds up. Interesting to see traffic
signals and turn restrictions on a cycle route!

BTW thanks for all your work on HS2

Brian

Re: [Talk-gb-westmidlands] A34 cycle route

2019-04-15 Thread Brian Prangle
Hi Andy

Just to make absolutley sure I cycled this route today and added/corrected
detail and also took the opportunity to check upon the progress of the
Commonwealth Games Athletes Village - the old BCU is completely demolished
apart from the pub - maybe they're going to retain it as an example of
English quaintness.

The Bristol Road cycleway is way behind schedule but I've added an untagged
way ready for the opening

It's a been a while since we met in November and I agrred to to get some

It's a massive development( over 6,000 homes - partially complete) with the
first residents moving in a year ago and also a new primary school
operational. Currently it's shown as a construction site with a few service

[Talk-gb-westmidlands] Shropshire Wildlife Trust

2018-08-16 Thread Brian Prangle
Hi Phil

You might have noticed some editing from me in Shrewsbury- that arises
from a very productive meeting I had with Robin Mager of the SWT. The
upshot is that he will investigate giving us access under an open licence
of the drone imagery they're assembling of their reserves. He's also keen
to get some more nature reserve detail into OSM and he'll look at piloting
a mapping event in a reserve that has an active friends group and more
generally perhaps encouraging people to map their local reserve even if
it's only by adding notes or mapillary images. I'll keep you posted, but
don't expect anything in a hurry- summer holidays stand in the way

[Talk-gb-westmidlands] August Meeting

2018-07-28 Thread Brian Prangle
Hi everyone

We generally do a Saturday meetupin August. Rob and I thought a
Herefordshire venue would be good and seeing as the summer QP is PROWs, we
should try to do as much of the Herefordshire Trail
 as
possible. All of the western section between Bromyard and Ross-on-Wye
remains to be completed according to the OSM relation

Which Saturday is best for everyone? An where's easiest for people to get
to?

Re: [Talk-gb-westmidlands] Bus routes in Rugby

2018-07-20 Thread Brian Prangle
Hi Gareth

If they're that old and no longer exist then just delete them! If the bus
stops in your area have route ref nos on them than that can be an aid.
Otherwise there's nothing to do but ride the buses if the bus company or
local transport authority is unwilling to release the data under an open
licence. Having mapped bus route relations in the past and tried to keep
them up to date I've come to the conclusion that the routes are too
volatile to be worth entering as OSM data (and we don't make it easy to add
bus route relations either!) so they really belong as data rendered on
another map using OSM data as a base map. But good luck if you want to try

news that my colleagues from the Satellite team have updated tint and
colouring of the West Midlands imagery. It's not new imagery though, just
looks better. I hope this is of help at all

Re: [Talk-gb-westmidlands] Proposed Import of West Mids VMS Locations

2017-11-06 Thread Brian Prangle
I've examined the data againnst aerial imagery and the Highways England
positional data for VMS signs is so poor it really precludes an import
which is sad. Signs are up to an estimated 10m away from their gantries
and signs on the same gantry don't even line up. The Birmingham data might
be better but it's difficult to check with aerial imagery as most of them
aren't gantry-borne. I'm happy to chip away at this manually, unless anyine
feels we can still go ahead with an import and then adjust the nodes
manually- it will be a hard sell outside our group.

My proposed tagging is

traffic_sign=variable_message

variable_message_model =  e.g. 4x13 VMS MS5

variable_message_type = matrix

variable_message_type = graphic

variable_message_type  = graphic;matrix

variable_message_information = parking or maybe
variable_message=parking_information

variable_message_information = traffic or maybe
variable_message=traffic_information

traffic_sign:location = overhead

traffic_sign:location= roadside

For ways that are not oneway: ( wrt to direction the OSM way is drawn )

traffic_sign:forward = variable_message

traffic_sign:backward= varable_message

(Tagging not yet gone through an approval process)

Re: [Talk-gb-westmidlands] Proposed Import of West Mids VMS Locations

2017-11-06 Thread Brian Prangle
Thanks for this Rob

I might parse the short description to split the identifiers and
type_description

I've asked Andy Radford in BCC for an explanation of acronyms etc

As for placing as nodes on the highway - I'm torn - I can see why it would
be useful for data users but it doesn't always indicate the physical
location ( cf bus stops and speed cameras). But if we don't place them as
nodes we'd need to know which are gantry located and which are roadside
which the data doesn't indicate

[Talk-gb-westmidlands] Proposed Import of West Mids VMS Locations

2017-11-05 Thread Brian Prangle
Hi everyone

I'd like to open a discussion here first before opening it to talkgb and
talkimport

The raw data can be found here

It covers the West Midlands and parts of the M1 and M69 also

Licence is OGL

I've edited the data to give lat/lons and I've added operator tags based on
Motorway/Trunk being Highways England and everything else BCC.
I've put a copy on Dropbox

so you can review the data.
I'd welcome feedback on what to tag the Short Description column

Issues:

VMS tagging is a mess so I'll no doubt have to wade through a tagging
proposal. The most sensible approach was discussed here

I've not checked against against existing OSM data which I suspect is
patchy and given the tagging mess difficult to do a taginfo or ovepass query

What do you all think? Is it worth pursuing?

Re: [Talk-gb-westmidlands] Activity Updates

2017-10-20 Thread Brian Prangle
Hi Rob

No need for thewalkthrough everyhting was very intuitive and easy to find.
The only downer is the inability to select multiple objects and perform one
tagging

Problems for bus routing software (Mentz Diva) were caused by: incorrect
complex junction configuration not permitting the desired route through;
turn restriction rather than an access restriction; ambiguous access
restriction; bus stop with incorrect route_ref

Hi everyone

I'm in discussions with TfWM to use their inspection teams' time on the

Which one of the above is better for us? Or just plain better?

[Talk-gb-westmidlands] June Meeting

2017-05-18 Thread Brian Prangle
HI everyone

We decided at our last meeting to meet in Wednesbury on Thursday June 1st.
Usual practice of mapping in the early evening and meetup at 8pm.

I've consulted CAMRA's good beer guide and the Bellwether looks the best of
the bunch. Its at 3-4 Walsall St WS10 9BZ, close to the main shopping
centre and market (not mapped as yet!). Unless of course anyone has local
knowledge and knows a better pub.

Wednesbury is on the Metro line. It's faster to catch a train to the
Hawthorns and then get the Metro.

[Talk-gb-westmidlands] Import Progress

2017-03-18 Thread Brian Prangle
Hi All

I'm off for a break and I'm leaving a couple of key imports partially
complete so I thought it best to give you an update of where I'm at:

Trees

47,000 imported so far (out of a total approx 76,000)- none north of the M6
which I've left for Andy R. Less than 0.1% (estimate) are positioned in
roads or front gardens - a slight improvement of either the road or landuse
alignment fixes these. Before any import I've deleted any roadside trees
added from aerial imagery. There were only 4 trees in the West Midlands
tagged with species information - all monkey puzzle trees tagged by AndyR
and all N of the M6. There are trees in the database that have been cut
down - I think the field value is "asset to be de-accrued" and there a
few labelled as "pre-contract stumps". I'm generally just doing a blanket
import and will clean these up later, unless it's an area I know well where
I'm deleting them manually.

Naptan bus-stops

All pre-existing OSM bus stops have been upgraded with new naming format,
route_ref, and Towards tags, and OSM position left intact. All pre-existing
naptan nodes in OSM without the bus stop tag have had the bus stop tag
added as well. Their position obviously will not have been verified by
survey, but this method offfers completeness

All pre-existing OSM bus stops that have been deleted in naptan have had
the highway=bus_stop tag removed and a note added explaining what's
happened. Feel free to delete any you come across.

All new CUS stops have been imported (approx 230)- mainly because they
don't render. A gradual review will be necessary as I've found in areas
that I know well that many of these now have poles and should be MKD in
the naptan data, and I've tagged them as bus stops where I've surveyed them.

I'm gradually working through the approx 300 OSM "orphan bus stops" that
have been surveyed but have no naptan tags. So you'll still see some
duplicates in places. Where this is the case transfer any extra tags like
shelter present and shelter ref no to the adjacent naptan node and delete
the orphan. In most cases where I've done this the OSM position of the
orphan node is better than naptan so move the naptan node to the position
of the orphan

 Some of the OSM pre-exisitng bus stops are nothing to do with naptan (e.g
NEC and Airport car park shuttles) so I'm tagging these with naptan=no.
About 20 of these so far

Any bus stops where I find there is a discrepancy beween naptan and OSM I'm
tagging with naptan_refresh=query (most of these have been Ring and Ride
stops, or poles flagged physically with NOT IN USE). About 40 of these so
far.

That leaves about 800 new bus stops which are yet to be imported. Some of
these will match "orphan bus-stops". The remainder I'm hesitant to import
as they're either poorly positioned or just don't exist. So it's probably
going to be a long manual comparison slog. Or we live with this level of
questionable data and import them

Around the larger interchanges and bus stations I've been adding a
stop_area relation and adding the public_transport=platform tags to the bus
stops. NB these are topographical areas and have no relation to naptan stop
areas

The last task remains to import the data on shelters, which I'll be getting
from TfWM towards the end of April

Bus Lanes

TfWM are asking local authorities other than Birmingham (which I've already
added- but we do need the times for adding conditional tags which can only
be done with surveys)) for their bus lane data. So far I have shapefiles
for Wolverhampton. Does anyone fancy adding these?

Hi Rob

I've got the offer of help from BCU to create something - but if there's
sommething already coded then they can just tweak that.

[Talk-gb-westmidlands] Amey Birmingham Highway Assets Import

2017-03-03 Thread Brian Prangle
Hi everyone

Following on from our discussions at last night's monthly meeting can I
propose the following as a way forward?

Traffic Signals

Import as nodes and then gradually transfer relevant data to adjacent
traffic signal nodes,then deleting the import node as and when folk are
editing in the area. I think the only data we need to add is the usrn
number. At the time of import we add a FIXME note with instructions on what
to do on each node

Trees

We do this on an area by area basis, deleting the existing tree nodes along
highways and replacing with Amey data. The data looks good as far as
positional placement goes and the other data looks pretty comprehensive.
Jerry, who des have some expert knowledge in this area, has suggested this
approach supplemented with a survey to check the accuracy of the species
description. I don't think we have either the human resources or expertise
to do the follow-up survey and I think we'll have to rely on the accuracy
of Amey.

Overall this approach will be slower and more human-intensive but works
around our lack of programming skills to do a mass extract compare delete
import

On both issues I'll contact Amey as to how they propose to release data for
additions and deletions.

[Talk-gb-westmidlands] TfWM collaboration

2017-03-01 Thread Brian Prangle
Hi everyone

Just for update

All naptan bus stops from the 2009 import are now updated with name
standard, route_ref data and towards data. All those marked as DEL have
been deleted. Bus stops added by survey before or since the import
(characterised by their absence of naptan data) are being manually reviewed
and where they are duplicates - usually from surveys before the 2009 import
they are being deleted with any asset_ref tags transferred and positions
adjusted (usually the naptan node to the survey node position, it's
invariably more accurate). We're waiting for the new naptan nodes created
since the 2009 import to be added and this will enable us to clear up the
remaining non-naptan surveyed bus stops.

The task is about 500 non-naptan bus stops in OSM to be reviewed and until
the newly created nodes are imported then many can't be resolved. There are
about 1000 naptan nodes waiting for import.I could do these tomorrow but
they'd be missing the route_ref data and the new naming convention so it's
better to wait for the TfWM developer to prepare this data.

In addition, stop_area relations are being added where they are obvious -
usually for bus stations and interchanges. NB these do NOT coincide with
naptan stop areas, for which we don't have the data anyway.

All Swift Collector positions have been verified except for one or two that
are inside bus stations or located on information boards at interchanges

Outside of the naptan data:

All railway stations have had their West Midlands Fare Zones added

All the proposed Metro lines have been added as railway=proposed.This
should really be treated as an import rather than an automated edit.

If anything' s not clear, please ask. Or if you spot any bus stop data that
looks anomalous please identify it

Dose the speed camera cover trafficin both directions or only one lane?
The from/to relation points suggest a direction but I'd have to read the
wiki again to check how unambiguous the relation is

Re: [Talk-gb-westmidlands] TfWM NaPTAN refresh

2017-02-15 Thread Brian Prangle
Hi Matthijs

I don't understand what there is to sort out. We don't want to delete the
node and its naptan data just the bus_stop tag which the naptan:Status=DEL
indicates. If we delete the node entirely it's difficult to recover if
there any errors in the status and we actually survey one of these on the
ground and find a bus stop actually there.

Brian
