This is the same kind of mapping task manager as HOTOSM, but less "hot" :P
Please be logged in with your OSM login to see the maps in the projects
properly.

I've created the "India.MH..." series for mapping rural roads. Beautiful
countryside, just connect the state highways main roads etc to villages and
hamlets. And if you come across a habitation that has no place marker, pls
add a village/hamlet pin (no need of name) to it - really helps in other
projects that look for such pins to guide mappers.

If you get your pdf/image maps geo-referenced on mapwarper.net or
elsewhere, here's a simple tool you can use to compare them with satellite
imagery etc, and also to compare them with each other:

Click at a spot of interest on the map to get exact lat-long-zoom coords
for your documentation.
The current view there shows two development plan maps of Bangalore that
had been geo-referenced and shared by some folks in datameet mailing list
some years back.

Hi folks,

I'd like to share about OSRM - Open Source Routing Machine. It can work
with freely downloadable Openstreetmap data to give a self-hosted
road-routing solution that's a drop-in replacement for many google maps
services (not that one you want the most, but many ;) )

I see a lot of promise in this and similar tools to help businesses and
organisations involved in transport, logistics, GPS, delivery etc to save
expenses. There is a huge amount of money Indian companies are sending out
of the country for geo-services - I'd like to see some of that retained.

Decentralizing is a key enabler here: Bringing down the base area makes
your OSRM program fast and light. So, instead of trying to load the whole
planet's OSM data or all of India's, loading just your region lets you do
road routing fast and cheap.
There's some technical hurdles to cross in learning how to set up and use
OSRM. Towards that, with lots of help in dockerizing from Srihari Thalla,
I've started a project on github  :
https://osrm-decentralized.github.io/ with the
aim of making it easy for anyone to "roll their own" OSRM using some easy
docker recipes.

If you have an OSRM instance serving an area, inviting to add your link to
this live demo.

For grabbing your state/UT's openstreetmap data, I've set up this resource
where you can get the latest data updated daily:

[Talk-in] Seeking help / resource persons for bulk data imports

Hi Friends,

Craig <https://tasks.teachosm.org/user/Craig%20Dsouza>, Chiranjan (who
works at Pune Municipal Corporation under 100 Resilient Cities program) and
I <https://tasks.teachosm.org/user/Answerquest> have conducted some
sessions on OpenStreetMap in Pune, MH over the past month. One of them was
at Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics, and another was at College
of Engineering Pune > Town Planning Department.

We have come across queries from people having great data, well curated and
institution-backed, that they want to contribute to OpenStreetMap. But they
do not have the resources and knowledge required to do so on their own.

We do not have experience in this, and the time we have on our side to put
into this will be limited. Looking for some resource person(s) who can
either instruct precisely (very precisely!), or take charge of and drive
the process.

After seeing through one import end-to-end we may develop more capacity to
do this on our own.

I will be attending SOTM Asia this weekend, let's meet up if you're there.

Hi Aruna,

This would be a good question to post on https://gis.stackexchange.com ,
there are good technical GIS experts there from around the world, and
there's points to be earned so good incentives for properly resolving. Also
check if a similar question has already been posted there.

Taking a shot:
I'm not sure if the "right hand rule" validation/rectification for geojson
polygons would work here or not, but it did help me in a calculation
function using python's geojson_utils module. The area was computing to be
negative, and reversing the order of the co-ordinates of the polygon set it
right.

Validation site that flags if your polygons are adhering to the right hand
rule or not: http://geojsonlint.com

My brief understanding: It's a validation for geojson that has been made
non-compulsory in recent times, but still causes problems at some places.
When traversing through a polygon, the math formulae assume one side to be
'in' and the other side 'out'.
A quick rectification without having to alter the polygon data : if area
computes to be negative (<0), then multiply by -1 to make it positive. But
I don't know how this may apply to your specific function calculation.

I ran your geojson through the tool and it has reversed the order of your
polygons' co-ordinates to solve for right hand rule. So try the reversed
version in your program and let us know if you were able to resolve your
problem.

If this works, then please post this question on gis.stackexchange.com and
share the link so I can post the right hand rule answer there!

[Talk-in] Pune Mapping Parties 26,27 Oct #SoTMAsia18

Hello mapping people,

We (DataMeet Pune chapter) are organising two events (Mapping parties) in
Pune, MH for talking about OSM and mapping some things, as a run-up to the
State of the Map Asia event next month.

1. Friday 26 October 2018, 4-6pm at Gokhale Institute, BMCC road
2. Saturday 27 October 2018, 2-5pm at GeoSpoc, Baner

The 26th one will have some urban and rural planning students from COEP and
Gokhale attending as major chunk of audience.
The 27th one will be non-specific.
Both events are open for all to join (and you're cordially invited!), we
will put up event links on meetup.com/DataMeet-Pune/ soon to catch RSVPs.
The sessions will be hands-on and participants will be asked to bring their
laptops.

I wanted to reach out to folks on this mailing list who are in Pune,
inviting your inputs and your involvement in conducting these events. The
main ways you can help is by:
1. Being a behind-the-shoulder guide and troubleshooter for the hands-on
mapping activities.
2. Being a validator on the mapping tasks we will do via tasking manager.
(this one's online so open to experienced mappers anywhere and will happen
post 27th, but let's interact once before you start validating)

that you can share? (preferably an Overpass Turbo query link?)
4. Can you share any timelapse to show OSM India coverage over the years,
or similar resources? I have a 3D globe one but it only glances by India
briefly.

Hello,

Apologies if this is a repeat post.. I'm not seeing these mailing lists
often.

The India HOT Tasking Manager site http://tasks.openstreetmap.in is not
working when we try to login. Getting a generic error message

unable to complete your request."

And at some places, advertisement popups are spawning, there might be some
malware scripts at play.

A fellow mapper who had been participating in our project

Other tasking manager sites I checked are up and running properly.

[Talk-in] How does OSM store its data

Hi,

I want to learn how OpenStreetmap stores and manages its data, plus how
Overpass Turbo extracts it.

I find the key-value pair system fascinating (variable fields, organic
building up of data) and want to replicate that elsewhere. Just the data
storing part.. don't want to generate map tiles etc.

Any pointers? Any place I should ask?

[Talk-in] Planning for OSM mapping party in Pune for Maharashtra

Hi Friends,

Looking for folks who would be interested in organizing a mapping
party in Pune, for areas in Maharashtra (particularly off-metro) that
need mapping.

Intended dates : A Pilot in late October with smaller crowd, followed
by a main event on a weekend in November. Flexible.

If you're interested in making this happen then please write back.

Disclaimer : I'm myself not expert at this, haven't used JOSM yet,
done only few contributions on OSM. But I can help with event
organizing, have a few venues in mind.

Cross-posting on OSM India and Datameet mailing lists as there's
common interests, hope that's ok.

Some ideas that we can work on:

1. Involve students hailing from different parts of the state and
studying in Pune : they can offer local knowledge. Pair them with
trained participants if they can't add to OSM themselves.

2. Research which places in the state need mapping. Check out some
analysis tools.

3. Connect with NGOs having boots on the ground or data that can be
valuable to add. (like school, health centre, panchayat, bus stand
locations)

4. Standardize on tags (key=value pairs) to be used for various common
additions.

[Talk-in] Seeking advice for tree mapping using OSM

Hi Friends,

I want to find out how to bring integration into OSM or similar in tree
mapping / tree census exercises.

Some non-negotiable requirements are:

   1. The data we pool in remains extractable for all, the way we can
   granularly extract OSM data using overpass-turbo; doesn't get locked up
   anywhere *even if the survey/census is incomplete*.
   2. It's possible to build up over time. So the trees we map this summer,
   a few months later a team could curate that data with more fine-tuned info;
   the mapping exercise will not need to be done all over again. Or, growth /
   decline of a tree's height/canopy can be tracked yearly.


I'm using Overpass Turbo  to extract OSM data,
and running this query in the wizard:
*natural=tree | natural=tree_row*

As of now, in my city's central area, I can find a decent job of basic tree
mapping done for one of the main public gardens in my city (like this
). But these only have the
most basic key-value pair in them, so far.

I want to know what are other key-value pairs etc I can use to put relevant
data in.
Some parameters I expect we would need:

   - local name of the tree species
   - scientific name of the tree species
   - height of the tree
   - canopy area
   - date or month of observation of above two properties
   - A URL to a photo of the tree that one might upload on imgur.com or so.
   - year of planting if known
   - was it transplanted (after sapling stage) from an earlier location
   (yes/no)
   - custom code / serial number assigned by the surveying group so they
   can keep track.

Following on from requirement#2, there will be a wide variance in what data
is recorded first and what will have to be left blank to add in later. Our
solution needs to make room for this variability.

Next, I want to learn how to upload a set of data at a go rather than one
by one points. For example, we would have a table/spreadsheet with all the
above parameters as columns and a latitude and longitude column. How do I
upload that table to OSM, mapping the columns to the relevant fields?

As of now, the groups I want to do this with (reforestation, local tree
care-taking, environmental education, school projects) aren't aware about
OSM or the fact that data can be granularly extracted using it, so they
probably haven't tried it out yet. But I think this would be a perfect fit.
I want to figure everything out on the computers-end and give them a neat
and tidy process that they can adopt and integrate without needing a degree
in IT or a diploma in GIS etc.

PS: http://trees.metastudio.org is also a very promising platform, but
still I want to explore how one might go about this in OSM all the same;
and besides, the export feature isn't working on my end as of now, and bulk
upload isn't directly doable either.

[Talk-in] Telangana state boundary missing imp metadata

Hello,

I came across this key-value pair while checking out state boundaries:
is_in:country_code=IN

..but it's missing for Telangana.

So in overpass, if I'm looking at Telangana and I run this query:
boundary=administrative and admin_level=4 and is_in:country_code=IN
... then all states except Telangana get highlighted.

I'm new to this all and presently can't understand how one can edit a
large element like this (browser editor asks to zoom in to small area
before we can edit.. I could add in some roads but whole state
boundary I can't see any way to edit). So can someone who knows pls
bring all the Indian states in sync?
