Best, Nick [EMAIL PROTECTED] Thanks for your reply nick. India is primarily Garmin country too in dedicated GPS(Destinator 7), but with mobile phone related GPS coming up, and other PDA based GPS systems coming up, there is increased demand for Route66 and IGo. In dedicated GPS systems Blaupunkt is making big inroads, as their pricing is good, and they have a tie up with the german manufactures, and the other common GPS system used is Magellan. Infact, I found a lot of Magellan in California. As for me personally, I have a lowrance(lcm maps), but converting garmin format to lowrance is not really a big problem, so I do fine. Magellan guys have the toughest job, first you convert to polish format, then shapefile and them magellen img I can probably talk to other on the talk-in list, and get a clear cut idea about what else is common apart from garmin. The project of dropping segments didn't have to introduce new information out of nowhere. World-wide only defaults and no country defaults will simply not work: * certain highways types have certain access rules that are different in each country, and they can always change later on (and as said before you won't be able to automagically correct those explicit tags) * not all countries share the same vehicle types, world-wide defaults cannot handle that * different countries, different implicit rules on tags like access=destination * if you'd add motorcar=yes by default for each track, then where does it stop? bicycle=yes, foot=yes, moped=yes, motorcycle=yes... And then that complete set of tags for each highway in the world for each vehicle type there might be on this planet. Just the problem with this is that by having all this data, you actually *lose* information or you'd have to introduce foot=implicit_yes when it's a road that implicitly allows pedestrians. But in that case, you can observe the fact that implicit rules can be extracted from the highway type and perhaps some additional tags, so you don't need any implicit_yes or implicit_destination or implicit_whatever. You only need a set of rules for each country (the set of country defaults that in your model were in JOSM, but much more powerful). Then, if an application wants to support local rules for e.g. routing, the application will have to know in which country it is executed and apply the list of default values accordingly. Some default values can be accepted worlwide and set in the dedicated key page. For instance: highway=pedestrian implies motorcar=no worldwide If one country cannot use the worlwide default value, we move the default values from the dedicated key page to a wiki page which could be called Country specific default values (or whatever you like). For instance: highway=pedestrian ; bicycle=yes/no = see [[Country specific default values]] On this wiki page, each country can build it's onw list of default values if they wish: highway=pedestrian germany bicycle=yes france bicycle=no oneway=yes netherlandsbicycle=opposite_is_tolerated U-turn restrictions australiarelation x required etc... Pieren Because using borders to locate entities within countries/states/regions/cities is a Hard Problem which has yet to be solved satisfactorily in OSM, what about tagging the ways with access_rules=ruleset? Then the rules could easily be changed by country or region if the respective government decides to modify the rules. Absent the tag, it would mean the global defaults apply (along with any explicit modifiers). Yes, it would mean an extra tag on every way, but only one extra, not 5. If it were done cleverly, you could make it hierarchical, with global default access rules at the top, followed by, for example, modifications for Germany, followed by modifications for Bavaria, followed by modifications for Munich. Then you would just tag the ways access_rules=Munich (or Muenchen, whatever). It has the advantage over using government borders in that it could even support variations which may not be locality-based (i.e., US_rural or US_urban). Something similar could be done for applying national speed limits. Instead of just maxspeed=national, make it maxspeed=UK_national or England_national or however it works. [OSM-talk] footway vs. path [Was: highway=track and motorcar=yes/no]
Are paths larger than footways? Is it for paths required that any other vehicle/horse can use the path otherwise it is a footway? There is no defined physical difference between footway and path. The difference is that footways are primarily or exclusively for use by foot traffic, while paths are not. Just a thought; it all comes down to horse riding. Luckily the wording was chosen to include open to all non-motorized vehicles. At least if the German law forbids equestrian traffic on sidewalk and cycleways (as it seems to do), with highway=path they'd have to enter horse=no for every f^H^H single sidewalk and cycle lane. Such clear cases are, IMO too, left as footways and cycleways which forbid horses, with possibly a bicycle=designated or foot=designated where equal designation is present. As a consequence, a path is often *likely* smaller or looks less man-made than a footway or cycleway (the hiking trails type), but could be bigger (for example a dedicated, built-up and wide snowmobile route that would be wrong to claim as a footway). Now who can convince the germans to change their tagging recommendations? -- alv ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk

World-wide only defaults and no country defaults will simply not work: * certain highways types have certain access rules that are different in each country, and they can always change later on (and as said before you won't be able to automagically correct those explicit tags) It's very unlikely that a way will be affected by such a country wide change. It's much more likely that a way was given an incorrect highway tag. If access restrictions are explicitly set, it may mean that the way can still be used for routing. * not all countries share the same vehicle types, world-wide defaults cannot handle that If we decide that highway=track defaults to snowmobile=no world-wide, then there's no problem in snowmobileless South Africa. And then that complete set of tags for each highway in the world for each vehicle type there might be on this planet. Just the problem with this This thread is about world-wide defaults, but you're now attacking the idea of explicitly tagging restrictions on the disputed highway types. Either way a small number of highways are affected. And explicit tags will force casual mappers to think about other vehicle types. Of course the problem will be reduced if we let motorcycle=yes default to moped=yes as above. What about the reverse : You download myregion.osm.bz2, but before you can upload it to your GPS, you need countless polygons, wiki exports and libraries. is that by having all this data, you actually *lose* information or you'd have to introduce foot=implicit_yes when it's a road that implicitly allows pedestrians. But in that case, you can observe the Perhaps I don't understand : Either a road allows pedestrians, or it doesn't. If you have said JOSM preferences enabled and you want to add a track for which you do not know if motorcars are allowed, then you can indicate this by deleting the tag. On the one hand it's counter intuitive (you're in a hurry and you hit enter without deleting the tag). On the other hand it may encourage you to think even though you visited the site on foot (Did you see a signpost, tire tracks or houses ?). ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk

2008/11/7 James Stewart [EMAIL PROTECTED]: There has just been this discussion on the spanish list - and the conclusion was to label these roads as 'residential', since they are generally public roads with traffic similar to residential areas, rather than roads between places which would be 'unclassified' or 'classified', and are not really 'service' roads, which might apply to the roads within a private industrial complex. James Yet residential implies just that - the road is abutted by residences. Although the rationale is there, the additional implication makes the tag an invalid choice. If germany, a track could be recorded as : highway=track motorcar=no In Italy, a track could be recorded as : highway=track motocar=yes I like this idea of having country specific presets in the editors instead of having renderers to be country sprecific. It's way too late for that for tags like highway=track. Access rules are already heavily country dependent (highway=trunk allowing pedestrians and bicycles or not for example; access=destination implying that cyclists and horse drivers always have access in some countries, destination traffic or not). The same with for example default maximum speeds. Tagging these default rules will be a nightmare if it's at some point decided in country X to change the rules. Good point. But I am wondering how often that happens. How many of these rule changes do you remember in the past for your country which would have affected osm tagging heavily? You don't know anymore whether the tag is there because it was added as default from JOSM or another editor, or because it was explicitly signed The way some country specific tags could work is to translate a concept from that country (e.g. an express road which may be something completely different in different countries and would need other tags). I am hesitant with different definitions/defaults in the meantime. I could imaging that a map in the future allows beyond showing the rendered data to let me see all tags on a way. If I travel into another country, it is a nightmare to read just plain tags (not talking about editing). Wer also schreibt mal was zum NEUEN Key:NUTS bzw. Key:NUTSLAU ??? Gruß, ULFL ___ Talk-de mailing list Talk-de@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-de
