Re: [OSM-talk] Proposed Welcome Working Group meeting (was: Role of the Wiki)
Thanks everyone who took the time to indicate availability. The best time is Thursday noon MST / 7PM GMT based on response. Let's meet on IRC. We can hijack #osm-strategic for this meeting (unless we hear otherwise). Use irc.openstreetmap.org or your favorite IRC channel to log on. It would help greatly if everyone who intends to participate would take a moment to think about these questions: * What can we do in the next month / year / 5 years to keep more mappers engaged after they sign up? Think small and big. * What do you want to do yourself to achieve this, and how much time can you spend on it? * What has been attempted before? Did it work? Why (not)? Also, please review the previous meeting log and proposal (see below) and rally others you think should be involved. Talk to you Thursday. In very broad strokes, this WG will look at how we can do a better job of courting / retaining mappers who sign up and never edit or edit only once, never to be heard of again. These folks have shown an active interest in the project and yet we somehow don't manage to make sense to them. That's a real shame and we think there may be ways to do something about this. [talk-au] cities changed to towns
Hi, some Australian places have changed from cities to towns on; changeset was: http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/changeset/14217241 I've emailed to the editor to ask the source for the change as I believe some are now incorrect. I really do think Gympie, Maryborough, Warwick and Charters Towers are cities, and should have remained tagged as such. Are there others, in other states, within this changeset that should have stayed as is? Wikipedia is not the best reference material I know, but they have the Qld ones I mentioned as cities: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_cities_in_Australia Additionally, I think some of the others should to be tagged cities, even if not officially, under the Aus tagging guidelines at: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Australian_Tagging_Guidelines#City.2C_Town_or_Village.3F So looking at the tagging guidelines, haven't we agreed to tag by population size or significance in remote areas? Re: [talk-au] cities changed to towns
Hi Chris, Interesting topic - sadly the wiki just acknowledges the lack of an answer. My take is that the distinction between village/town/city really only matters for the purpose of rendering anyway - any more sophisticated use of the data is going to use population figures to make its own decision about how to classify towns. So I think it's ok to be a bit loose and subjective with our definitions. Hard for me to comment on the QLD ones. The Victorian ones are Warrnambool, Sale and Mildura. W and M definitely sense as cities than towns. They're major regional centres, and much more significant than towns nearby. Sale is more lineball (although Wikipedia counts it) - nearby Bairnsdale should be a city though. You see the effect it has on Mapnik here: http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=-36.74lon=145.31zoom=8layers=M It's definitely wrong having Sale show up at that zoom but not Bairnsdale. But the more I look at the Wikipedia list (counting 18 cities outside Melbourne), the more I think it would make sense to mark all of those as city. None of them seem out of place subjectively to me. I'm not clear on where the list on Wikipedia was derived from though. If you compare the list by population against the ones designated city, some omissions are Echuca, Warragul, Bacchus Marsh, Ocean Grove-Barwon Heads. Not a big deal though.
[Talk-at] Bawag PSK
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 Hi! Was denkt ihr dazu?

The South Devon Link Road near me was in the planning stage for more than 25 years before work started and having proposed routes in OSM for such long periods wouldn't benefit anyone. The problem is the lack of any current overlay facilities. We are looking at an overlay for historic information, and perhaps a similar 'projected' overlay is now about due? Where more than one proposed route is being discussed, it WOULD be nice to be able to see that information in parallel with OSM, but certainly not in the main database. ( Removing past history from the database is still not cut and dry in my book, but if a safe haven is created for that ... ) Personally I think the right time for any 'new' development to appear is when the diggers move in and start work. At that point it becomes useful to see what is going on from existing routes? [Talk-GB] Unfit for motors - tagging for routing
There are lots of roads where I map which have Unfit for motors signs (blue/white advisory) but are normal maintained roads in limited but regular use. Typically they are narrowish, with lots of bends and often steep. In general anything up to maybe the size of a skip lorry can get through (though some are too narrow), but what makes them unfit for motors is very long stretches without passing places,so if you meet something coming the other way, one of you has a very long, difficult reverse. They are currently tagged in OSM as minor roads, which of course means they are eligible for routing. As an example, most (all?) routing services (not just OSM-based, Google Maps has the same problem) will route Chalford Hill to Stroud along Dark Lane, but Dark Lane has an Unfit for motors sign. It's the shortest and most direct route from the A419 to most of Chalford Hill, but very few locals use it. I'd like to tag these roads so that routing services will avoid them, but can't find any direct way of doing this. I've seen elsewhere that one mapper has tagged similar roads as Service roads. This has two advantages: routing services will ignore them(?); and service roads render differently so anyone using the map visually will be less likely to use these roads. It's pushing the current definition of service road rather a lot, but if you consider a service road to be a road that should only be used to access locations connected to the service road, then it seems within the spirit of the definition. There's a specific issue with Chalford Hill at the moment. Road closures (due to collapsed retaining walls) mean that the popular routes to the valley (Old Neighbourhood and to a lesser extent Coppice Hill) are closed and likely to remain so for over a month. My local source (a parish councilor) says that most locals are using a long diversion and avoiding Dark Lane. (Traffic on Dark Lane has increased, and there was recently a fist fight when two cars met and neither driver would reverse. Locals want to make it temporarily one way, which would massively increase its usefulness, but there's no quick way of doing this.) My two questions: 1) Should OSM data discourage use of routes that locals - who are likely to be better than outsiders at coping with narrow lanes - avoid as too problematic; 2) Is tagging usable but 'Unfit for motors' roads as service roads an acceptable way of doing this or is there a better method (that is recognised by current renderers and routing engines). As my opinion on (1) is yes, I've tagged Dark Lane and a couple of even more difficult roads as service roads, at least for the duration of the road closures, but will happily revert the tag if there's a better way.
