[OSM-talk] Missing attribution : Guardian Data and OII use OSM

2013-02-15 Per discussione pavithran
Hi ,
Anyone glancing at the image published by The Guardian data [1] could
say its a OpenStreet Map . But there was no mention of that .
I went forward and read the article in Floating sheep [2] which also
doesn't mention anything about the maps being based / are OpenStreet
Map . Ironic is the fact that the author has taken pain to give
citations/ references to Geographical Research papers but missed even
a lil bit of info on where the maps are from .

Sad to say that its coming from a research institute which studies the
web on issues like privacy ,copyright etc .

1.

2 . http://www.floatingsheep.org/2013/02/the-urban-geographies-of-tweets-in.html

PS : I do realise that it[2] isnt an institute blog/press .

considerably fewer than ones where people get upset with Wikipedia. (In fact,
when people do get upset about maps, they'll usually get upset with Wikipedia
too. At WikiConference India, members of the nationalist BJP protested
because of Wikipedia's map and description of the situation in Kashmir.*)

Though offtopic , the same group also has another set of gang or
groups which vandalises the wikipedia articles and you can hardly see
any political articles on India with NPOV ( Neutral Point Of View)
because a major group of editors come from a certain group and are
well versed with all kinds of rules which wikipedia editors use to
remove/revoke/edit an article .

Coming to mapping in India , Kashmir might be the one border issue
where International territory and line of Control are two
different lines and can be interpreted by various cartographers in
whatever way it pleases them . Google maps India doesnt even show the
line of control , google maps US shows it as a dotted line , OSM shows
it as bordder .

I would admit the fact that OSM is not that popular ( atleast in
India) that people who vandalise articles in wikipedia havent yet
started . Lets say it to the advantage of the tools being hard to use
even for the wikipedia editor , also would be the other fact that
there is less data here(India) for them to seriously consider OSM as a
map which needs to be checked up / bothered with . Google enjoys the
complete dominant position with people fighting editor wars in
mapmaker .

Personally am I waiting for a surge of mappers ? No I am not , I would
rather see a surge in mapping and effective usage of tags , hopefully
which the future editors could clearly include some 2 minutes of
tagging tutorial .

which matches
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/State_Of_The_Map_2013/Call_for_venues#Criteria
but I have a wishlist for the location .

I really really want it to be held at a developing country where OSM
data is very less , some place where there is hardly any open geo data
source or even a strong community of mappers .

By suggesting such a place I know I am also foolishly suggesting a
place where its hard to organise an event and would have a scarcity of
local volunteers but a SOTM at any such country would bring in a lot
of enthusiasm , team of excellent mappers, developers and will give a
huge push to Govt / GIS bodies to open up their data and also a huge
boost / thumbs up to the local community .

The developed world have already their own SOTM-EU and SOTM-US and
moreover their maps are very much presentable and in some case the
maps are much better than the commercial/propreitary ones .
Unfortuanately the same couldnt be said for the maps in the other
parts where routing doesnt work , the relations are mis tagged and
lack of data sources are problems to name few.

Its just a wish and hope I havent offended anyone .

[OSM-talk] [possibly OT] Apples IOS 6 Maps and the response

2012-09-20 Per discussione pavithran
The new map replacement from apple in its IOS has drawn a lot of criticism .

quote from
http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2012/sep/20/apple-maps-ios6-station-towe
Within minutes of the launch of the iOS6 operating system, which comes
preloaded with Apple Maps, users were reporting that London had been
relocated to Ontario, Paddington station had vanished, the Sears Tower
in Chicago had shrunk, and Helsinki railway station had been turned
into a park.

/quote

Having said that How much is it OSM data? There have been messages
saying its the TomTom data but if you look at
http://gspa21.ls.apple.com/html/attribution.html
there is a line (OSM)
OpenStreetMap contributors, http://www.openstreetmap.org/

Pretty confusing and sad to say that many of the comments were against
the map app and suggesting that they would hardly accept anything
other than google maps .

Hmm its definitely hard to get all the POI's in mapnik . But
Osmarender (t...@h) can accommodate new Points of Interest .

1. See that the tag which is used for that particular point is in
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Map_features
You can file a ticket for both the rendering engines if it is available .
http://trac.openstreetmap.org/

2. Is the tag widely used ?
Yes = Do mention them here .
No = Than see if an appropriate tag could be used , If not propose a new tag .

Its a bit of tiring/long process to get new stuff into the map hosted
at OSM website . The easiest thing you could do is to have your own
rendering .
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Rendering
Since you have mentioned Jammu Kashmir .Lawgon has been running a
mapnik instance for India .
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/India#Rendering_Server

You can ask him to include our desi tags on the map :)

Completely agree . You need to cleverly give the benefits almost like

One thing I could give is Apart from croud sourcing , data

Can't this be fixed ? Prehaps make it render like natural parc : green

 boundary

Osmarendering is better

By the way what kind of nature reserve is that inside water ? some

Now a lot of places are full of pro-mappers, we are doing house numbers,

YES and I was thinking of posting about it but waited because I want
to learn about simple tiles generation for small area using osmarender
(where I could set my own zoom level and was suggested by amm at diary
http://bit.ly/8Z6ieY ) . Openstreetmap could enrich the map experience
like never before, now that some experienced mappers have started
mapping shops inside a shopping mall .

It definitely makes mapping easy in developing areas where most of the
shops are situated side by side in a small area which is in contrast
to UK/european shops which occupy large areas .

Here is a small Tale of two shops : One nice lane in a bazaar of a
small town I found two bakeries . One lies almost opposite to other .
The nice bakery is called 'Taj bakery' other one is 'Golden Bakery '
Mapnik in a lower zoom level shows it as Golden bakery . I actually
zoomed to a higher zoom level witha hope to see both bakeries .
Unfortunately it could show only golden bakery :( Seeing it with data
only shows the POI . I stopped mapping all the bazaars because Indian
streets unfortunately are constructed as bazaars with sometimes
collection of similar selling item. And I am forced to NOT map
selectively some shop when I am mapping those bazaars . Selecting some
shop as important and some shop as not important is very daunting task
:( Higher population areas have close knit shops I am wondering why
someone has not demanded for detailed mapping in those areas.

Coming to extra processing power bandwidth I think its time to move
ahead . I think that atleast osmarender which has a lower zoom level
when compared to mapnik and should immediately set to mapnik zoom
level ( just a matter of personal liking towards osmarender )

Hi all ,

I would like to display a Telugu name for some places. Telugu is an Indian
language with ISO code 'te' . I tried keeping name:te=ఖమ్మం I mean in
english name:te=citynameintelugu
This is not getting displayed in local language . Is this due to some
rendering issue ? I am asking cause I could see other languages like
Tamil, hindi and Kannada (neighbouring states ) getting properly rendered.
