Up and running smoothly for me, with gmail IMAP. Downloading a queue
of messages from the server remains much quicker than it did in TB
4.xxx. Thank you for all that hard work on IMAP, which seems such a
terribly difficult protocol to implement.

The inbox filters I use (only two) also work very well.

Virtual Folders

2011-03-31 Thread Maurice Snellen
Listmembers:

While we're at it discussing issues with Virtual Folders, I would like
to call attention to an issue I'm continually having with TB's folder
selection method. Every folder is selected individually for things such
as maintenance, back up and selection of where to look for messages to
be displayed in virtual folders.

As I add new folders to my structure almost daily, I would really like
to be able to select some folders with a setting of 'This folder +
subfolders' regardless of whether they already exist or not.

That way I can add folders as needed without having to worry about going
back to VFs and other settings to be sure they are processed.

Re[4]: TB! for Linux

2011-03-31 Thread Douglas Hinds
Hello Simon,

Wednesday, March 30, 2011, 9:03:25 AM, you wrote:

I confess: I intentionally referred to Linux -an excellent manifestation of
what can be achieved in an "open code, mutual user self-help and community
development cultural environment (much like that of TB! Groups - except for the
open code), in a rhetorical manner, reflecting a personal preference and value
system.

That said, the fact is, I continue to depend on two Windows applications, one
of which is TB! (although the use of TB! for Linux stops with the v. 3.x, for
now) and the other is EccoPro (which has not been developed since v. 4.01, a
late 1990's version).

Given the difficulty of porting TB! to Linux (and other Unix-like OS's) at
present, you recommended Evolution as the most appropriate TB! substitute
(which would provide a limited functionality of what both Ecco and TB! provide)
and I want to thank you for that recommendation. (And if this discussion is
too OT for TBBeta, I can email you off list).

But assuming that Evolution can't import a TB! backup file, I want to ask about
the possibility of exporting my TB! message base to a form Evolution could
import. As mentioned, for now I am using TB! v. 3.99.3 on both Mint and
OpenSuse (and a version 4.x on Windows - albeit I now use Windows rarely), with
a high degree of success (stability and speed) and only a limited loss of
functionality.

The attributes of TB I use most are:

1.- The Message Dispatcher (under pop - I check the first 30 lines of each
message before downloading or deleting any);

2.- Color Coding Messages;

3.- Adding Notes;

4.- The Multi-lingual Spell-checker

5.- Filtering -

6.- Templates -

7.- The automatic features for creating Address Books;

8.- It's Autosaving and Backup and Restoring capacities (all of which seem to
work fine on Linux, so far);

9.- It's Security features (perhaps less of an advantage under Linux but
important under Windows);

10.- The Tech Support (from both the TB! Lists and the Developers);

11.- Formatting Keystrokes (with some loss of functionality under OpenSuse - so
far I can get "all lower case" or "first-letter caps" but not "all caps", and
the "column function" is present on the menu but doesn't work in practice) and
automatic formatting.

I don't use the Ticker and haven't tried using Virtual Mailboxes.

One feature I would like to see implemented would be "Hibernation",so that TB!
closes and reopens with the same windows available.

I accept statements like "OS is better than OS when you want to
" (fill in the ??? with what you want).

Very well stated. Noticeable differences in TB's functionality appear to exist
between (Ubuntu based which in turn is is Debian based) Mint and OpenSuse, for
instance, and there appear to be trade offs involved, perhaps in part due to
the different compartment parts used (i.e. Grub vs Grub2, Parted vs. GParted -
although not necessarily in relation to TB!). (And speaking of Debian, is a
live CD/DVD available for Lenny? I haven't been able to find one).

But I also consider motivation to be a significant factor when choosing an
operating system environment and I'm not favorably impressed with Bill Gates'
history (the way he became the richest man in the world -for a while- or some
of the activities carried out by the B & M Gates Foundation), and rather than
being an innovator (he purchased almost all of most of what he has sold) he
captures and holds on to markets (betraying IBM to do so), doesn't share
Windows Source code with competing office suites and browser programmers and
many of the so-called "upgrades" are designed to prevent others from using
unauthorized copies of M$ products, rather than provide increased functionality.

So IMO, the principle positive aspects of Windows come from the contributions
of third party developers and not Microsoft itself and this becomes less of an
issue over time, as more and more developers provide both open-code and
proprietary solutions for Linux and similar systems.

As you mentioned, these are personal evaluations that may or may not be shared
by all Windows users.

Re: The Bat! 5.0.4 RC/4 is available for beta testers

2011-03-31 Thread mse
Hello Maxim,

I'm having a little trouble with the contents of the information tabs.

When I change the program language from German to English, the
information tabs content changes (not at once but with next folder
change), but when I change back to German language, the info tabs
content doesn't change back to German.

What I did:
On first program start (HINTS-folder deleted first) the info tabs
appear in German. After closing and restarting TB still shows German
info tabs, but the html-files in HINTS\GER have been replaced by
bak-files. Changing to English generates new English files in
HINTS\ENG. Setting the software back to German does not create new
html-files in HINTS\GER (only bak-files are there).

I use thebat.lng from the latest IntPack.

Best regards,
mse

This works correctly for me on Win7-64. I tried on Virtual folders, inbox, and other assorted folders and no problems.

However, since I started playing around with view modes, etc. I now find that the definition keeps disappearing and I get entries with empty names in the view mode editor.

First, the folder information of virtual folders is quite different from the

Some experiences with TB 5 RC4

2011-03-31 Thread Robert van der Hulst
Title: Some experiences with TB 5 RC4

Hello,

I installed TB 5 today and this are my first experiences:
I see a lot of improvements. Especially the URL manager. Congratulation with
the progress made.
I have tried a couple of other email clients over the last year, but nothing
beats TheBat !

Here are some comments on RC4

- My message list tabs have disappeared (Unread, Attachments, Flagged etc) I had
  to manually recreate them.

- My views modes were not working as before. The link between some of my folders
and their view modes was gone. I had to reset them.

- To set the viewmodes for a group of folder, I pressed the 'Used by'
button. This brings up a dialog that is not resizable. As far as I can see this
is the same dialog as the 'Watch' dialog on the virtual folder properties window
(with exception of the viewmode column in the left control) .
Both dialogs should be resizable to make them easier to work with with a large messagebase
(> 500 Folders, 350.000 messages, about 10Gb disk space)

- The 'Use by' and 'Watch' dialog have a select all and deselect all button. I am missing the
options that I have in the message finder (like 'Select current account', 'Select
including subfolders' etc) I am also missing these

- It would be nice if the URL manager had an option to only display the URLs from
the current selected message.

- There seems to be a problem in the URL manager when sorting my subject. Some
links are shown with the wrong subject. I have seen examples where images were listed
under the wrong subject.

'Test Filters' refilters the whole folder and is not just a test of
the selected message.

But the windows can be closed with the "Close" button.
And the informations into it are not up-to-date at all: it's a

I'd say they are a downright disaster. The folder-list hint provides no
real benefits. The things you can do with a folder are already listed in
the folder menu and don't need repeating here. About the only new
information here is the folder size on disk which might be useful. The
rest is unnecessary.

As for the message-list hint, I find this one particularly useless as
the text is mostly completely illegible.

In addition, where hints are supposed to be usefull, such as in the case
of url's, they are ugly, too large and still don't conform to Windows
standards.

I'm also experiencing problems with VF counters. I have one that
displays all items that are marked. There are 10 messages in the folder,
yet the counter says there are 0.

Confirmed. I still cannot use manual re-thread to link messages that
were previously not threaded together.

Can the user install previous version and call the About box? Please also
specify that previous version. The trouble is probably related to DEP (Data
Execution Prevention) checking.

Confirmed. For me, cursor starts in message body. It should be To: and
then tab to message body.

I've got "Group by date" enabled, and Ctrl+Shift+M marks entire group
as read, which is often every unread message in the folder (in 4 it
only marked current thread).
