Memory usage - TB vs Thunderbird 17.0

2012-12-06 Thread Bob Riley
Hi Everyone,

I just checked the memory usage of TB with Thunderbird 17.0 in Windows
8. I have used both for my Gmail IMAP account, and I was amazed at the
difference!

TB only uses 30 MB of memory and Thunderbird uses 144 MB of memory.
Very interesting (even if I don't understand where the difference
comes from). Ritlabs is doing something very efficiently! As always,
thanks to the Ritlabs team for this excellent work.

I installed it right over the 5.2.2 msi (which had the updated .exe

also. The installation was quick and flawless. My caveat, as usual,
is that I haven't checked all of TB's more exotic features.

R> Confirmed here

It is still true with 5.16.15 as well.

Also, in the past few versions, when I first start a new beta of TB to
get mail for my Gmail account inbox, it doesn't retrieve right away.
But when I close quickly close it and then start it a second time, it
retrieves inbox mail immediately.

I don't understand that phenomenon, but it's been true for the past
half dozen or so new TB .exe files.

My setting was "Immediate," and as you say, the resend process puts it
into the outbox instead. Of course, my normal sends do get sent
immediately. I wonder if the "resend" process is deliberately set
differently (to the Outbox) by design. I don't know, of course.

I just tried a resend with two messages. They ended up in the outbox
(and the original sent messages disappeared from the sent folder).
When I sent the messages queued up in the outbox, they were sent fine
- no errors - and the sent messages then again appeared in the sent

Up and running well with Gmail's IMAP. Startup time is 5-6 seconds,
which to me is good.

About the "relevant" folder - I assume it has some potentially
beneficial aspect, and its presence does not bother me at all.

If we find out that it does NOT have any potentially beneficial

Running well with Gmail's IMAP. I, too, just noticed the "Relevant"

"turn off" the many, which would be a sad development for Ritlabs, who

I just did the same test myself, using a pseudo birthdate for my wife
of July 26 (today). It worked perfectly.

I had set it up yesterday evening, and then started TB today - the
reminder memo popped up when TB first ran! A nice feature.

Yes, even if you offer extra features, there will be some who are
never satisfied. That is unfortunately true in some ways in our U.S.
culture in general. There is a fine line between 1) using technology to be
helpful
to human well-being - and 2) technology becoming an addiction for its
own sake, like alcohol, drugs or tobacco.

The good news - developing compassionate relationships with all people
(from the saints to the criminals) can never be a loss but only a
gain. We still need jails for some people, of course, but they are
still worthy of compassion, just like our best friends.

I sent the one from the email folder yesterday, but from using the
appdata line in Windows Explorer (thanks for that tip), I have the
second version of ex_log.txt attached - it is much smaller (see last
paragraph, below).

Did you see the note from someone that Kaspersky may in fact have
played a role here - it apparently is cautious in allowing a new .exe
file to run the first time (and that is when I see the delay when I
click on the start menu shortcut).

I just now again ran TB's command-line opening as you suggested - the
ex_log.txt file is attached.

The

I only found ONE ex_log.txt file on my pc (using Windows 7 search).
It was here: G:\My Documents\The Bat\

I renamed the original ex_log.txt file temporarily while I ran TB with
the command line you gave me above. The new ex_log.txt generated is
attached.

As I mentioned, the slow startup disappeared the next time I ran TB,
and every time since. I think the delay probably occurs whenever I run
a new thebat.exe the first time after an update, including a new .msi
file. Thus I don't know if you will learn anything from this attached
file. Please let me know if you want me to run a re-test after an
update! I could send it in an .rar archive instead, so please let me
if that would be better.

Have a great work week (hopefully, you can take Sunday off to rest!).

Before I respond to your instructions, I want to say that I couldn't
replicate the slow start. TB starts very quickly now! It may be that
the slow start ONLY occurs after a change in the .msi or thebat.exe -
I will monitor that.

Now, about your instructions - I only found one ex_log.txt file using
Windows 7 search - it was in My Documents\The Bat\

I couldn't find anything in that log.txt called %APPDATA% nor could I
find a folder called %APPDATE% anywhere. Same thing is true for
%EMAIL%. Then, you told me to remove those files prior to running TH
with the command line above. I hesitate to remove the entire
ex_log.txt file (withour your directions) - it has entries going back
to February 17, 2011 (TB version 5.0.0.140 BETA).

I am sorry to appear a tech misfit (!!!) but I need your help here.

Up and running. All functions I use seem to be going well, except
for the fact that clicking on TB's shortcut in the start menu of
Windows 7 leads to a significant delay in starting. This has been
true for a month or more. Could this be related to my using
 Kaspersky, I wonder? I don't know.

Gmail's IMAP continues to function very well for me in the TB 5.x
 series.

Installed and running well here, also, in Gmail's IMAP. But I don't
sort by threads, so cannot comment on issues like that.

I ran the installation right over the previous one, and started the

Up and running smoothly for me, with gmail IMAP. Downloading a queue

1. When I select a folder in the folder list, all the messages in
the message list for that folder turn alternating black and white. If

blue and darker blue. But if I again select the message folder

CORRECTION: The messages alternate light blue and white when I select

Yes, I understand that. I would have melted down long ago faced with

this task even when I was 40). You all must have the "patience of Job"

I don't exhaust all the features, so don't have any showstoppers to
write about. But I will say that for my Gmail account with the IMAP
option, versions 5 have worked better than versions 4.2xx ever did.
There has been no problem handling an inbox queue (unlike versions 4).
I am about to return to using TB as my primary, instead of
Thunderbird. It is only a matter of time (and that is based upon my
schedule of tasks, not based upon what more work you're doing).

Thanks to Maxim and you and the team at Rit Labs for your work. And
may the new year bring forth gifts and joy THROUGH you and TO you.

Font setting in "profile"

2010-12-20 Thread Bob Riley
Hi Everyone,

I must be doing something wrong in setting my font preferences. I
could use some (constructive) feedback, please.

The problem - the fonts I choose in mail composition (for composing,
and in even and odd replies) all show up the way I set under
. I compose in plain
text.

However, the fonts for the even and odd replies show up in a reduced
font in incoming messages.

I have set the fonts up correctly under both the "generic profile" and
my special "Bob profile," but that has no effect on the even and odd
reply fonts in incoming messages.

I use the MicroEd editor, by the way.

What am I doing wrong here?
