Re: Quo vadis, Bat?

Hi Miguel,

You can probably guess what I'm going to say.

As I have said elsewhere, I think TB's interface is in great need of a
facelift. Not just to be "prettier" (although it wouldn't do any harm)
but to be easier and more productive to use. Good (interface) design is a
combination of function and appeal. Sadly, TB suffers in both areas.
Although TB has a great many excellent /capabilities/ (for want of a
better word), many of them are both difficult to use and inelegantly
implemented.

A thorough redesign of the interface is needed both to improve TB's
functionality as well as its marketability.

Yes, but function are useful while skins etc are useless,
obviously IMHO...

No, i think is the need of all TB users... without a good manual/help,
all that functions are useless (because are not know !)

DC> most people use Outlook Express because it's easy and nice to look at.

No, all user are using OE because it is already installed on SO...

Yes of course, but if now TB is 4-5mb in size and occupies about 12/14mb of ram,
after skins, it will be a monster of 6-7mb and occupies 17-20mb
Only for do the same thing that it do now...
Obviously, if skins are implemented, i still continue to use it !
Only because of its unique features !

Obviously,I am not most people. If I want something that looks good
on my screen, I will put up a photograph and look at it for a while. I
use an e-mail client for one purpose; send and receive e-mail. You
could put roses all around the edges of the window and it might look
nicer but it would not improve the reason I want an e-mail client.

I was raised on Eudora. I honestly can't remember it looking all that
"nice". I quit using it some 2-3 years ago, when version 4 came out,
simply because it crashed continually. Tech help with Eudora had an
attitude that there was nothing wrong with it; use it and shut up. I
have used the_Bat for about 2 years now, and if someone asked me how
it "looked", I would have a hard time telling them. That is not
important to me.

Perhaps, but have you noticed the name of this forum? If it is not to
do with testing the latest beta then it's relevance here has a
precarious place only.

That may be, but it's stretching a point to use the TBBETA forum for
soap-boxing in that way.

In view of these facts and that arguments are already getting heated,
I have to kill the thread.

Please cease this discussion in this forum.

The developers read this list :)

Anyway, voices raised somewhat-off-topically are sometimes required
... especially when the issues raised crystallise what I've been
thinking about - inconclusively - for some time and encourage thoughts
to be put down on 'paper'.

It has nothing to do with testing the latest Beta... It's User frustration
that is speaking here... and RITLabs would do well to listen to it.

This is still something that should be directed to the developers and
not this list. I just can't see what this has to do with testing the
latest beta.

See previous, less certain, response by myself ;)

I suspect a lot of people use OE because it's there. Then some (by no
means all) become dissatisfied as their needs grow and look around;
when I started getting seriously into mailing lists OE began to come
up short.

(And, of course, the fact that OE and many other things are 'there'
automatically discriminates against TB! and many other packages.
Either that or all these lawyers and judges are wasting their time ;)

The reason most people use OE isn't that it's "easy and nice to look
at".

The main reason is that OE comes free and very many of the
computer/internet users doesn't even know that other alternatives
exists.
