Re[2]: The Bat! 3.5 Return RC1 is now available

2005-05-05 Thread Alto Speckhardt
Hi Alex,

With Auto Format On you can't make a paragraph (by pressing
Return) without inserting an empty line after it. If you try it the
next line is drawn back to append the previous one - as it should
 not be.
ASK But a paragraph is always separated with an extra line.

In continuous text, that might be. However, try this example:

***

I hereby order:

1item 1 10 E
1item 2 30 E
5item 3100 E
Total: 140 E

***

You might sqeeze in a line above the total, but definitly not between
every listed item, especially if there are not only three of them.

ASK We're not writing books, we're writing emails. :-) And turning
ASK auto-format on/off is only a simple keyboard shortcut away. Now,
ASK if I could only remember it... :-)

CTRL-Shift-F. I remember it very well because it is always set to the
position unsuitable for the text I'm currently writing, regardless of
whether it's on or off.

ASK Thats why I'm not using auto-format but press ALT-L

I didn't know that, thanks. Still, this makes it bearable until it
is fixed, nothing more. It would be better for RIT to nip the whole
GUI-thing in the bud and fix this single ... - well, let's call it a
peculiarity for those vi-type characters.

Re[2]: The Bat! 3.5 Return RC1 is now available

2005-05-04 Thread Alto Speckhardt
Hi MAU,

M Calm down bit.

Yes. Sorry, I was getting a little steamed about 9Val's latest comment
on priority and non-priority. It is a little less than amusing to
fight daily with a malfunctioning program for three years and then
being assigned non-priority out of hand.

M How many e-mail clients are there available in the
M market? Why choose The Bat!?

When I chose it, there were no alternatives. In the meantime, there
have arisen some, but it takes something to make me change from a
accustomed environment to a new one, especially if I had to go through
the registration circle again with the new solution.

We may be at that point, though. It is not long ago I had been able to
recommend TheBat universally. That was a time when I thought that
malfunctions (to call them bugs would be a gross understatement) would
be worked on. Instead the ones responsible spend their time painting
new colours on the buttons! Incredible! :-((

Sorry, steam rising again.

M No software of this kind will ever satisfy
M every user 100%.

I'll grant that for e.g. TheBat not being able to use standard LF/CR
handling in the editor. It hurts me every day, but if this is just
TheBat's way I can't say much against it.

But on other issues this doesn't work. TheBat is sold as IMAP-capable.
Still, IMAP doesn't work. This is not something to be liked or not, it
is a serious malfunction. If we were talking about cars the government
would withdraw RIT's license for selling this vehicle. It's only the
software business where engineers still think they can get away with a
product where 51% of the features are working in some way.

M If your % of satisfaction with TB is as low as it seems from your
M message, why suffer? Go find another one.

I am at that point. Up until the last few days I could not bring
myself to believe that the disinterested neglegence RIT exhibits
really stems from facts. I thought they were busy working in the
meantime instead of writing messages. Apparently, this is not the
case. They don't even pretend to be. It's at least honest, but they
still won't score a cookie for it.

M Let's be reasonable. We are talking about a magnificent and quite
M complex piece of software (and therefore with bugs) [...]

I'm not challenging that. I'm a programmer myself, and rationally I
understand the reason that there always will be bugs. But when I
market a program, I react to people's needs, concerns and suggestions.
I do not develop in a direction that is neither needed nor wanted and
leave my customers hanging out on the lim in the meantime. I
especially don't just re-lable an alpha version that has not fixed any
bugs but, on the contrary, introduced a bucket full of new ones as a
release version.

M If after purchasing and using it for some time (years in your case,
M I think) someone finds his/her % of satisfaction is low, why
M suffer? Look for another one, buy it and use it happily.

You're absolutly right. I will have to go that path.

It is difficult for me though, because not only have I myself used
TheBat for quite a while but recommended it to friends and clients,
some of whom have themselves bought licenses. It's not nice to go to
them and admit that I seriously misjudged the fitness of the authors
of the program and that I'm sorry, but they should better use
something else as well. This is not something you enjoy. Because, see
- I DO care for the users I service, private or commercial. My mistake
was to apply that standard to RIT, too.

Hi MAU,

M What do you actually mean by not being able to use standard LF/CR
M handling in the editor?

With Auto Format On you can't make a paragraph (by pressing Return)
without inserting an empty line after it. If you try it the next line
is drawn back to append the previous one - as it should not be.

If you disable Auto Format then no formating is done to one
paragraph in its own. Yo can have the first line only half full with
no Return behind it, but now the next line is not drawn back - as it
very well should be.

I've inquired about this issue years ago but have not even gotten so
much as a reply. (Same as with the other bug reports I submitted over
the years, BTW.)

Hi 9Val,

9 Just look at the main purpose of this release - it has new GUI
9 system. All our efforts are dedicated to it. Sure, we have
9 fixed some other bugs, but look to Peter's list, it is mostly
9 cleared. [...]
9 Currently there is only few real bugs which are
9 show-stoppers - AV on entering search (not for all), threading
9 by references, and randomly AV (reported by Marck-Roelof-Gary).
9 Sure, it will be better if other will be fixed too, but I don't
9 think they are so critical to start new holy war.

And I thought I at least expressed myself sufficiently clear in my
last message. Maybe you could give a short reaction whether you really
still didn't get me or you chose to ignore me:

The thing simply doesn't work!! Write it bold, in two different icon
sizes with the fancy new user interface, the IMAP mail client portion
of the program simply doesn't work!

This isn't the time to design a user interface! A mail client doesn't
need to look pretty, it has to work! When you have done the basics,
then you can move over to the extras! They can wait, not the other
part! What's the use of treating your car to new rims when the engine
won't start?

You spoke of flaming: I AM flaming now. If you need time to fix
something that's broken or has never worked, well - nobody around here
can work miracles. But you apparently chose to blatantly ignore the
fact that you're selling a non-functioning product and you don't give
a hoot about it!

And what do I have to read today: You implemented graphics for smilies
(did I get that right? I was just browsing over it.) You implemented
something a serious user will deactivate sooner than you can spell
irritating, but since version v1.6 (earliest verson I ever used) you
have not found time to implement standard line-feed/carrage-return
handling into the text editor! That's three years ago! Three whole
years!

Oh yes, I am flaming now! Call it boiling! :-((!!

This could be the solution for the half icons that were visible throughout the
program. The half icons are now full. But even the toolbar icons are now
small. I like having toolbar icons larger. The little marker icons can be
smaller. Yes, it is hard to tell what the toolbar icons are when they are
so small.

Strange how something can get fixed that the programmers didn't know about.
Previously all little marker icons have been cut in half. This version shows the

size as the little marker icons.

I have previously mentioned that check box functions were reversed. Put the check
in the box to disable the option. All my filters were like that. They are ok now.

I also am still concerned that the drop down for the pop address is

Finally, View | Display | Advance Features is still dead. I know this
