Hello Beat,

On Saturday, December 09, 2000, 1:31:14 PM, you wrote in subject of "Importing a X.509
certificate...?":

As I remember, TB! 1.47 Halloween Edition can't import certificates
from sender's address. It was fixed in some later beta (I don't
remember, from which beta version), but in current version (beta/11)
   it works almost well.
So all you need, is to upgrade to the newest beta (11) and this should
resolve your problems (Specials|Add sender to Address Book ).

   HTH...

Re: Multiple e mails

2000-12-10 Thread Edward Taylor

Folks...I think I just set off a firefight. Reality is that The Bat
advertises as a business tool to handle large lists of e mails.

Yes, you can do discussion lists with it...but the reality is business is
functioning on the Internet by staying in contact with its customers by
mailing lists and newsletters. The Bat claims to be a tool to make that
easier

All very misleading... when the discussion list that supports the software
opposes the basic premise on what the software is supposed to be doing.

Anyway, glad I stimulated some discussion and found some answers

But...any of you folks been out on the Internet of today and seen what is
happening out there?
E-commerce is here to stay and email is its biggest tool.is the Bat here
to be a part of that or just some techno play toy

Re: Mutiply e mails

Thomas,

Maybe you need to re-examine what spam is. It is not e mail to opt-in,
targeted customers who have requested e mail about subjects they are
interested in.

This is not 1995 when the Internet was an entirely different world...

Re: Mutiply e mails

This issue here is overloading a mail server with the same addresses being
posted over and over again in each e mail when you are mailing to a customer
list.

Your personal feelings about spam appear to be shining through here Marck.
Targeted email to a customer list, no matter how large it is, not spam.

There are only two methods, whatever the front end may look like. You
can send one 60kb message which the outbound routing server breaks
down and delivers (BCC address lists are not passed to the final
recipient, but do exist during routing) or you send 2000 1.5kb
messages to each individual recipient in the list. RFC822 compatible
SMTP delivery methods only provide these two alternatives, however it
may be wrapped.

The forthcoming feature in v1.48 that was mentioned already will do
the latter of these two and is currently in beta test. BCC already
achieves the former.

BTW: I really hope we're talking about lists of consenting recipients
here and not about spamming unwilling victims!

I also ran 'Ad aware' on my system and it found no Opera related

I again have come up with a clean system. I had previously run Optout
which came up with a clean system.

It would therefore seem that if you're a registered Opera 4 user, the

that was my current default setting

So if you have a message to send to a list of customers that is 1500 bits,
and you send it to 2000 people...every message becomes 60,000 bits because
of all the addresses?

And you are all telling me there is no way around this.

2000-12-10 Thread Fusiontunes

Hello Edward,
I think I seen someone answer this question a few days ago..
If Im not mistaken the answer was no. (but dont hold me to that)
However I do know a free mailer that is made just for that..
It is called the "Mihov Mail Sender" and you can find it at
http://kiss.uni-lj.si/~k4fe0043/sw/MailSend.html
I have used this one alot and it is great. Dont mistake it for an
email program like the "Bat" ..its only a mailer.. it is possible to send as many
e-mails
as you want at once - but the recipient will see only himself on the
recipient list. Mihov Mail Sender is great both for personal invitations
and business proposals.

The new facility kind of makes it worse: Instead of clogging the

Please do not write to the list in HTML. It is against the list rules
and many of the members here do not appreciate it. Some even have
filters to move any HTML mail directly to trash.

In answer to your question, there is no MUA on the planet that can.

Maybe if the addresses are supplied by the server, then you send the
server an alias for that list. That's the shortest addressing method.
If the addresses are to be supplied by the MUA, TB can help initially
by allowing you to specify the name of a group in the address book.
But, when the message is sent to the server, the individual names from
the address book replace the name of the group in the To: or BCC:
field - as they should. How is the server suppose to know who to send
to otherwise? Ultimately, the server needs to have a complete (and,
perhaps, "clogging") list of recipient email addresses to be able to
route a message to the intended recipients.

Not quite, the current line is wrapped independently of the preceding
and following lines. If your line is properly wrapped to begin with,
you won't notice the difference. This probably has to do with the
mechanism that's available for selective wrapping. If you highlight a
couple of lines in the middle of a paragraph and hit ALT-L, only those
lines will be wrapped. Very useful for wrapping lines in a list.

It's a known bug, and I consider it minor; along with the fact that

Not a bug, but close to it

2000-12-10 Thread Karin Spaink

Alt-L (reformatting a paragraph) often doesn't work properly
while your cursor is in the line where you have just added
or deleted a few words. Alt-L in that case will be apllied
to all lines *above* your current cursor position, but not
below. In order to do so, you must move down your cursor to
the next 'untouched'line and press Alt-L.

I consider that to be, well, not a bug, but an imperfect
implementation of an excellent feature. Any other opinions?

allow sound time interval

2000-12-10 Thread Tobias Wrede

Hello TBUDL,

This is another time interval topic apart from the "just curious:..."
thread, although it might apply there, too.

I have set "allow sound only within time interval" to 10:00-01:00. Now
I just received a mail at 01:15 and, guess what, the sound was played
anyway.

I played around a little with the time setting. It appears that the
silence time is ignored when the specified time intervall extends over
midnight. I send myself several messages (all between 01:15 and 01:40)
and with the interval set to 10:00-01:00 and 02:00-01:00 the sound
played anyway. With the interval set to 10:00-24:00 and 02:00-03:00
TB! stayed silent as supposed.

Maybe you "just curious:..." guys :-) could check if the same thing is
true for the filter setup.

so long
Tobias

http://www.ritlabs.com/the_bat/beta.html has the (beta
version) for MAPI. Download it, put the mapi.dll in your
TB directory.

Close TB and reopen it when the new dll is in your TB
directory. Try your MAP thingie, and if it fails, close all
and give the command /installMAPI on the command line
*once*, e.g. c:\internet\thebat\thebat \InstallMAPI
Then retry.

I forgot to mention that this only happens after TB! is started (and
collects mails automatically). It does not happen again while TB! is
running.

I've noticed that a couple of times with my Inbox. All incoming mails
have been filtered and moved to other folders. No new message remained
in Inbox. Nevertheless in the folder-tree it showed 1 unread message.
When I click on the Inbox (and the folder appears in the message
list) the counter gets corrected. This "bug" remains for a couple of
days and then disappears for some weaks before it reaccurs. I cannot
find a pattern in the behaviour.

I'm probably still too new to TB! myself to give you the best
explanation. But when setting a filter, look under the options tab
to see where you can set a hot key to fulfill a task that you set.
In my case I was trying to use a hotkey to color code a particular
msg & move it to a special folder which saved me a couple of steps.

Doug> Oh, not sure why both a move to a new folder and a change in colour?

This probably belongs in the "Dept of Redundancy Dept". One could
logically conclude (as you have) that if one changes the color
there might not be a reason to move it to a separate folder because
it has already identified by the color id. I guess I do it because
some msgs get buried depending on how you have your view options
set & it's easier for me to see what I need to do when the msgs are
gathered in their own folder. I'm sure others will have
   other/better systems.

Anyway, I hope my explanation helped answer your question(s).

Stick a pin there. You're confusing me. You're giving me the impression
that your understanding of what I wrote is that the time range denotes a
simple time interval and not a period of time during the 24 hour day
period.

That's not what I was saying. I'm saying that it denotes a period of
time during a 24hour day period.

For example 00:00-08:30 means 12midnight to 8:30am in the morning.

That's what I meant.

If it were a simple time interval, you wouldn't need to define a

Cookies

2000-12-10 Thread Thomas Fernandez

Hello TBUDL!

I have some 100 cookies in my cookies file, which TB will use for
replying to the TB lists (four of them) - (only on my home PC).

I have the feeling TB will reuse about 10 over and over. While I like
the idea of a random cookie, I am now thinking that sequential use of
the cookie file might be better.

I don't know the algorithm, but I get the feeling that everything
really starts from the beginning when I have opened the file to add
some additional cookies.

Like: take cookie number (fixed algorithm) starting from last pointer
at file; and the pointer will be reset every time you open the cookie
file with Notepad.

Re: Bat! cannot connect to server for outgoing mail

2000-12-10 Thread Thomas Fernandez

Hallo Melissa,

I had a worse problem when I was visiting my mother and logged in
through Hamburg.de.

When sending company email with my Taiwanese edmail address as sender,
I couldn't send, because Hamburg.de wouldn't let me use their smtp
server (even though I was logged in through them). They don't allow
usage of their smtp server when the sender details are not a valid
account with them.

I couldn't use my Taiwanese smtp server, because I was *not* logged in
through them, and the error message from my Taiwanese smtp server was
"We don't relay".

Of course, I have International Roaming on my Taiwanese account, but
the roaming service provider in Germany will only send encrypted
passwords, and the Taiwanese provider will only accept clear-text...

:-(

So I ended up sending from my GMX address and use the GMX smtp server.
But of course, that From address confused all my workmates as well as
my customers

At least Earthlink will let you use their smtp server when you are
logged in through them, regardless of your From address. When I am
logged in through my Taiwanese ISP, I can use their smtp server for
any From address, or can use any smtp server which will accept my
mails.

I don't really see a difference here? I'll try to make it more clear:
if one types 11:51-13:55 the filter will start to work/be active
beginning 11:51am until 13:55 (=01:55pm). That's how I understand it
and that's, I think, what Curtis means as well. Or am I wrong?

greetings,
Alexander

That's granted. Your example didn't have the "Date" field, either.
The created line is in its own line, with no header field
identifier. TB can't recognize that.

My problem with that interpretation, is why denote a simple time
interval in that way? If they really intended a simple time interval
they would simply let you denote the seconds and time as a single figure
as is done with denoting the time interval until opened messages are
automatically marked as read.

If the time interval is denoted with the syntax xx:yy-xx:yy it should
mean the time interval between two times of the 24 hour day.

Netscape version? Haven't tried it for news for a long time, but
don't think it's in the same league of those news specialists
(Agent, Gravity, XNews, etc.). Of course, it's surely a matter of
needs and tastes.

And Agent isn't free. (Free Agent is free, but its power is quite
limited compared to Agent.)

You mean the setting in folder properties? I don't think that would
move purged messages to the trash folder. Messages would appear in
the trash folder only when:

1. they're moved (or copied) to it manually or by a filter; or

2. they're deleted manually (by hitting the Del key).

BTW, by filter I mean those you set up in the Sorting Office. I
wouldn't call the "keep msgs in base for xx days" option auto
"filtering".

Ok, I assume you use this one to move those msgs you've replied to
trash, right? (Why don't you do it with a auto replied msgs filter?)

I'm afraid you're not giving us your whole story, for so far I can
hardly make sense your setup, let alone figuring out what's wrong.
Let me requote your original post:

> A group of msgs is deposited in my inbox. I can mark some msgs with An

How are those "moved" to trash? (You said by the "keep for xx days"
setting, but that doesn't make sense.)

> This works fine but I've noticed that a 2nd copy of msgs that

Does this happen to *all* msgs marked to answer? Are those 2nd
copies (in trash folder) have the same "answer this one" color? When
would they show up in the trash folder? (Right after you use the
hotkey to color code those msgs in the Inbox?) Are those msgs marked
to answer parked?

The change didn't make it into the release note for the official
release of 1.46, but I believe it's just a documentation oversight
(or they probably thought it's too minor to put in there). On my
system, the key no longer exists (I deleted it myself), and TB works
fine.

It happened to me again yesterday ago after the installation of
Mozilla 0.6 (or the nightly build, or is it Opera 5? I forgot, for
I've restored my system from backup a few hours later.)

Opera 5 is impressive, but I don't like adware, and I'm not ready to
pay for it due mainly to its poor East Asian languages support. :(

Yesterday I used the same trick and it cured it again. Too bad it
didn't work for you.

Re: just curious: can messages be automatically marked as read?

2000-12-10 Thread Alexander Levenetz

Hello everybody,

sorry for not participating for a while - I was wondering why there
was no new mail in my TB-folder till I remembered that I had checked
"mark messages as read" in my filter options... =:-o

Regarding the time interval-option setting under advanced: The wording
is actually pretty clear :-). A setting like 00:00-00:02 will lead to
a working filter starting 00:00 and ending to minutes later. But I
guess that one is clear now anyway.

Thread killer!! ;-) That's exactly what I need! :-) In combination
with Ctrl-A and then Ctrl-Shift-M it does what I was looking for. Not
automatically, but nevertheless. Thanks!

Alexander
