Hello,
is it possible to expand threads with a magic button click or I have

I have an auto response set up exactly the same way that you have BUT
I also have checked under *Account Properties/Transport* - immediate
delivery (as opposed to deferred). Do you also have that checked?

Other than that, I don't see what else the problem could be.

Depends on on your ISP, the servers the message passes, etc. I've got
accounts at four ISP's and only one of them inserts a routing header
for the recipient. Depending on the passed servers the mail from the
other ISP's might include the intended recipient (my address) or they
might not.

That's what I meant. You can't be sure of it. Not all servers place
the intended recipient in the received header.

1) The Inbox is a high traffic folder. Messages are moving through it
all the time. It is not good practice to use Inbox as a long-term
   message store.

2) The Inbox should be emptied and compressed once in a while.

3) If *ever* a folder shows a "corrupt" message there is a sequence I
   *always* go through:

a) Move all of the surviving messages to another folder.
b) Empty the folder
c) Exit TB.
d) Use Windows Explorer to locate the folder and delete the
   messages.tbb and messages.tbi
e) Open TB
f) Click on the empty problem folder (to recreate the folder files
   and index
g) Move the messages back in.

This sequence will "flush" any inherent problems in the tbb file,
which has clearly hit a problem somewhere.

Hi --- The *immediate* box, is checked, in that account for my
auto-responses. In the *other* account, for normal use, the box is set
for deferred.

I checked the *Logs* and saw just a few lines, none of which indicated
anything abnormal. In fact, there were no SMTP listings in the past
time period ---until right now when I generated a message to myself to
test manual sending. When I first looked, a few minutes ago, there was
a message queued in the outbox of the auto-response account.

It's certainly not, but since urls and addresses are clickable in TB's

would be an alternate way of storing urls to favorites for *everyone*.

He did something that is not all to common nowadays: Instead of just

Considering that many people make their discontent with an application
into a "What a crap" statement, it was high time to read something

It would be nice to be able to mark threads to watch and threads to

What version of Windows are you running? Older versions of Windows
(95, 98) need their common control DLL's upgrading for toolbars and
buttons in some applications to work properly. I have no idea if
this affects TB! but it certainly caught me out with some of my
  development projects in the past.

If you have a modern version of IE installed then you've already got

Filtering by subject

2002-05-23 Thread Jon Lawrance

I have the following in the subject filter section:

Access World - Development: (US|Other)

I want to filter emails that arrive that look like the following:

Access World - Development: US

or

Access World - Development: France (etc.)

But they are not working. Should I not be using the () or something?

Huh? Is the TB! editor or viewer a browser since URL links within text
are live and clickable? I don't think so or did you misunderstand?

Tja, you see the problem. If they don't send upon check, then there is
something wrong with the Combined Delivery setting. But I am no
further. Combined Delivery means that all messages in the Outbox
should be sent when checking for mail. Yet this does not seem to
happen.

RD> *That Account* has Combined Send/Rx checked and the *Other*

Let's look only at *that account*. The automatically generated
messages on my machine where always sent "deferred". They were put
into the Outbox, and the next time this account checked for mail, they
were sent. You mentioned in another message in this htread that you
have set to send immedaitely. Switch this to deferred and see whether
it works. (I'm fishing with this one.)

With SmartTab disabled, tabbing will move you 4 characters forward.
(TB!'s editor doesn't support true tabbing).

However, if you enable SmartTab and you have text above the cursor,
TB! will use the last line of text as a reference and position the
cursor at the first letter of each word in the line above.

Like auto-indenting, this can be very useful.

2) Regular expressions

I don't disagree that TB or SB is not a browser, and I am even on the
fence of displaying html mail...

However, I would argue that it would be useful to have SB launch your
associated browser when you double click the link the same way the
message viewer & editor do.

I am also a former (and for many years) VA user and I initially missed
the same thing. But it it not that difficult to emulate it with TB. If
you have set up Incoming filters so that your incoming e-mail is
sorted to different folders, all you have to do is copy those same
filters and paste them to your Outgoing ones. The Inbox source folder
is automatically changed to Outbox. And yes, each time you add a new
Incoming filter you have to remember to copy it to your Outgoing ones.

You could make one specific filter for "Access World - Development:
US" and one for the rest.

Make sure that the US-specific filter is above the other and does not
have "Continue processing with other filters" in the Options tab
checked.

Smart tabs are wonderful for creating ASCII tables. For example, in
this table:

COL 1 COL 2 COL 3
=  ==  ==
Value 1.1 Value 1.2 Value 1.3
Value 2.1 Value 2.2 Value 2.3

Most times, to move to the next column, you just need to press Tab. TB
inserts as many spaces as required to get you to the start of the next
column. No hanging on the space bar (with possible misalignment) like
some other editors; no possibility that your tabs will render a
different width.

Enable 'Regular Expressions' in 'Options' tab in sorting office and

Next thing is: if you filter 'UK' to a different folder this filter has to

Message window not updating in XP

2002-05-23 Thread John Sands

I just installed TB 1.60m under XP Pro and the message window does not
work. It displays a few messages fine but then stops being updated --
whatever I select, it still show an old message. If I bring another
window in front of it, when I close that window, part of it's contents
are displayed in TB's message window. I've tried minimizing and
restoring TB and going to other folders. Sometimes I can open a new
message window and it will work for a few messages. The only thing
that works is to close and reopen TB. This happens when viewing
messages in both the preview pane and the message window. The part of
the window with the From, To, Subject is fine, but the message area is
not.

Thanks,
John

2 mysteries

2002-05-23 Thread Jan Rifkinson

Hello Bat Folk.

I have 2 mysteries on my hands. Any comments would be
  appreciated:

  1. Msgs disappearing from a common folder w/o an
  expiration date but with compression.

  2. On occasion, TB! seems not to want to d/l [auto or
manual] on a DSL line. Disconnecting & re-connecting DSL &
closing/re-starting TB! eventually solves the problem. But
its intermittent, no common denominators yet. I've had
some issues with the DSL software so I'm trying to track

Kludges

2002-05-23 Thread Lynn Turriff

Hi all ..

Been reading this filters thread with great interest, but
I think some of us would benefit from a run down on the
kludges option there.

If you do 'kludges' in the help file you find it's absent,
and it looks to me like one of the most useful/powerful
options for filtering.

So how about explaining kludges in a generic kind of way?

I didn't misunderstand anything. If you look at what I wrote you'll
find that I stated a fact - an obvious one, maybe.

Nothing sinister behind it. ;-)

That may be true, but I can't think why - when I first
started using it, I just configured it and everything
worked fine. I didn't immediately learn to use all it's
bells and whistles ... still don't, actually, but figured
out what I needed pretty easily.

True. My glitches are fixed, but I'm still reading,
because I know there are other things I can use in this
thing, if I can figure them out. But a good many of the
questions on this list could be answered by going through
and re-reading the menu options and config windows.

FWIW, I have been looking at Poco Mail, because several
people (not on this list :-D) have told me it's much
better/easier than TB, but though there are a couple of
very nice things about it, I find TB easier, its
interface cleaner, and it's options much broader. So I'll
stay with it :-)

Hey Lynn,

My MUA believes you used The Bat! (v1.60h) Personal
to write the following on Thursday, May 23, 2002 at 10:06:12 AM.

LT> Hi all ..

LT> Been reading this filters thread with great interest, but
LT> I think some of us would benefit from a run down on the
LT> kludges option there.

LT> If you do 'kludges' in the help file you find it's absent,
LT> and it looks to me like one of the most useful/powerful
LT> options for filtering.

LT> So how about explaining kludges in a generic kind of way?

Kludges is another way of describing the RFC822 message headers.
If you select a message and hit F9, a window pops up showing you the
entire message - Kludges (in blue at the top), your message, and how
the attachment traveled through the SMTP world.

So if you are filtering on "X-Mailer:" you will notice that I am still
using "The Bat! (v1.60h) Personal". If you look at the third line of
this message, that is what I did in my template. You are also using
1.60h.

2002-05-23 Thread Jonathan Angliss

On Thursday, May 23, 2002, Jon Lawrance wrote...

> I have the following in the subject filter section:

Are you just trying to filter each country into it's own folder? Or
are you filtering only certain countries into their own folder, and
the rest into a big central folder?

If the later, then you can just create a rule based on the subject for
the countries you want to appear in their own folder, and then
underneath (order is very important), you put the catch all for that
subject line. If the former, then you have to create a filter for each
country. Procmail (I use a lot on linux) allows you to do some nifty
filtering using OR statements... like this:

:0:
* ^Subject:.\/Access World - Development:\/(US|Other)
$MATCH

This would end up dumping anything that matched the US country into
the folder "Access World - Development: US" and anything matching
Other into "Access World - Development: Other". There are some further
filtering you can do on it so you can get it to only go into US, or
Other folders if you didn't want the full subject. I doubt that filter
would work right, it's a hashed attempt at making one ;)

Does TB! support this kind of filtering in it's regexp coding?

No, I can't see the words between your lines.

Someone says that he is unable to click on links that he has stored in
SmartBat! to invoke his browser. It's interesting that SmartBat which
is based on the editor doesn't support this while the editor does.
Does this make the editor a browser? Does being able to URL click on a
link so that your *browser* is automatically started and pointing to
the URL make the source application a browser?? Hardly. If this is the
point you're trying to make then clearly I disagree. If this isn't the
obvious point you're making then I'm being dense. Please explain
further. I'm curious.

There have been many positive Postings about TB in this List, but this
individual wrote in effect: I do not have any problems with TB so I do not
understand why everyone else is having problems. It served no purpose
whatsoever other than to 'slight' those having problems... an underlying

having spend years in software and hardware support besides being in

Re[2]: New Version updates... 1.60m... Groan

2002-05-23 Thread RapidFX

Hello...

First off, do not put words in my mouth.
You do not know of what you speak.
I am amazed at all the people who took offense to my post.
I got a lot of off-list emails from some not so happy humans.
I am sorry if you all took my post to be some sort of insult on all
the people who have problems.
Looking at my original post, I see some sort of statement such as
this:

"I know that means nothing to those that do seem to have issues..."

I am tired of seeing so many posts from people spewing that "TheBat!
did this evil thing to my system", or "If this isn't fixed, I am going
back to FREE OE blah blah.."
Reading through the past two weeks, I don't see a lot of positive
remarks about TheBat! so I posted one. I hear people at work talking
bad about TheBat!, I hear people on the list talking bad. I was tired
of it and I posted, what I thought was positive, remarks on my years
of use of TheBat!
I made an attempt to defend what I think is a GREAT product.
Far much more than any other email client.
Now go get some coffee and stop worrying that I may have somehow tried
to insult you.

Which is why I think it's one of Microsoft's worst products.. In
general, it's adequate for most home users, because most home users
don't know there are many options.

I got 3 virus alert warnings this week about viruses that target a
small bug that was supposed to have been fixed by MS in OE4. If they
cannot fix that, then the chances are, there are probably some bigger
ones lurking around. I used to use MailWarrior [www.kaufmansoft.com]
for a fair bit of time, until it decided to dump all my mail because
of a read error. That to me is a fairly nice, suitable free version...
and sits somewhere between TB! and OE. It was actually the support
forum on the MW website that made me try out TB! ;)

I'm not sure I agree completely. I had previously stated that I
migrated through three versions without any problems. That is
different than saying that I have not found any problems in the
software.

Some people who tend to "break" software more than others are not
necessarily using it in more imaginative ways, but have just not become
"trained" in the bug-free path through the software. It is often less
a result of imagination and more a result of newbieness that a user
will stray into the bug-laden areas of a program. And then there is
also the factor of how predisposed the user will be to mention the
problems.

As the user base increases, imagination plays steadily decreasing role.

Focus on starting TB

2002-05-23 Thread Julian Beach (Lists)

Hello tbudl,

I have been having occasional problems with TB when I first start it.
The main program window will not take focus, so although the Window is
there, I cannot do anything with it. Strangely, I can right click and
bring up the context menu, but again can get no further. The Message
Ticker works, and double-clicking brings up the folder view, but I
cannot select messages - buttons will pop out when the mouse travels
over them, but cannot be clicked.

I have checked for the obvious things - there are no out of view TB
windows that have taken the focus (none that I can find anyway) and
Alt-Tab does not bring up any windows that I could not see. When this
happens, the only solution seems to be to close down TB and start it
again.

Any ideas?

The Bat! seems to be a very simple piece of software but it is just
that...software. All software is subject to problems in one way or
another. I think the place to point the blame would be on these peoples
specific machines. Most of the time it has been my experience that clients
machines are screwed up with to begin with. Regarding a machine with MS,
if you don't tend to rebuild them once or twice a year you are bound for
problems. Don't waste you time trying to isolate problems, back up your
data and rebuild!

I am in the anti virus business. Clients come to me with infected machines
and wonder why? "I have an anti virus program". Come to find out it is an
inept program that hasn't been updated or dealt with in 6 months. You
can't blame the software for your lack of knowledge.

Don't know where I was going with this but I just had lunch and needed to
burn it off. ;o)

Obviously I and the others were reading too much into the original Posting.
In all fairness, I think our 'reactions' are more a reflection of the
undeniable frustration the Users are feeling lately with RITLabs. My
apologies to Greg.

I'm on my third which is Black Ice. Both TPF & ZoneAlarm
[both versions] gave my system real hissies. BI seems
  transparent.

The other common denominator is the DSL software & I've
been dumped out of it to the blue screen as W2K dumps
  memory contents onto my HD.

Version chaos

2002-05-23 Thread Kai Göing

Hi:

I am somewhat confused with regard to Ritlabs' current TB release
policy. Right now, there are so many updates/bugfixes for 1.60 that I
have no clue which version to use. According to the German distributor
of TB, version 1.60d is the best, most stable, must bugfree -
whatever. That's why he has designated it to be the official version
of the German TB distribution package. According to Ritlabs, however,
1.60m must be the version to go with. Having read that that version
supposedly has a GDI leak, I cannot believe that Ritlabs would offer
such a version to new users, hell, even old hands and make it
available for download on their official site. What's the deal?

So long,

Kai

Do you have the control center set to hide or to show up
automatically? TB! seems to have locked up or is busy doing something
when that happens to you. Do you have TB! configured to do a mailcheck
on startup? If so, disable this and see what happens?

Think of a nasty application interaction, another common culprit.

Messages Not Getting Deleted on POP Server

2002-05-23 Thread Chris Montgomery

Howdy TheBatUsers,

I've been using TB since Sunday and have noticed a recurring problem
for the past two or three days. When I have large amounts of mail it
doesn't get deleted from the mail server. I have "delete received
messages from server" checked under the Message Management section
of the account properties for each of my four accounts. It deletes
the mail most of the time, but usually not when I have lots of mail
  to download (200+, for example).

This has happened three times today. The first time I had about 245
messages to download. The next time I had about 280, then the next
time just over 300. The latest batch was 378 to download. Lots of
  dupes to delete.

  Anyone else had this problem?

Re: Messages Not Getting Deleted on POP Server

2002-05-23 Thread RapidFX

Hello...
I have had this issue twice, on pre 1.6x versions, and I found it
to be an issue with the mail provider. Breaking the connection
during download of email caused them to pile up as dupes each time.
I did not "fix" this issue, it just went away eventually.
