There is a port number entry in the SMTP - NNTP (likewise in POP -
NNTP) gate configuration. You can enter any _unused_ port on your
machine. You have to enter _this_ port in The Bat!'s SMTP port.

I have only one point where I can enter the port number:

Gate / Properties / Gate / Local port.

I have set this to 110, and in TB I have sent the POP port to 110, and
it works.

Whether I set the SMTP port in TB to 25 or 110, makes no difference.

using a (sub)folder structure to store my messages: main folders per

The tools TB offers to search for a given message are sufficient for

As far as HD-space is concerned, it's cheap and very accessible.

TB keeps your accounts separated in their own directories, each with
their sub directories for the various folders. So it's rather simple
to make back-ups for one account and ignore the other.
Each account has it's own inbox, outbox, trash, quarantaine and

I have been away from The Bat! for a while using Linux, and as you all

for The Bat! on the Ritlabs site, and have to ask: Why using the web
to discuss an e-mail program that is wonderfully capable of dealing
with a good 'ol mailing list? I do not mind web forums and message
boards. But what I would like to see is that everyone that can/want to
discuss a certain topic is doing it in the same place if possible. It
makes the mailing list, or the message board for that matter, more
useful to everyone. Right now I have to switch between a browser and
The Bat! to keep myself in the loop. I am hoping that I will be able
to only use this list as I did before and not have the to keep a
message board open also.

Just my 2 (last) cents after having upgraded to 2.0 (worth every penny

The antispam controls you see in v2 require a plug-in. One is currently
available and it's called Bayesit.
I know of TWO Bat installations that, once Bayesit was installed, caused TB
to no longer start! (The fix was to rename/remove the c:\bayesit
directory/folder.)

I gather from many other messages I've seen that this plugin must be
working for quite a number of users though.

PS the subject of this thread has now become something other than the
originally intended question about v2 features. At what point does one
change the subject?

But what I dislike more is the fact that this forum seems to be
something official by Ritlabs, while there is no mention whatsoever
about this and the TBBeta lists (and others) even though they have been
going on for years and helping many, many, many old and new users. I
feel quite disappointed with Ritlabs if we don't even deserve a link to

Top posting, i.e., typing all your reply text at the top of your message

actually request that you not do so on this list because

a) It makes it difficult to glean context from what you typed at the top

and

b) It encourages excessive quoting.

We would much prefer if you quote just that much of the message to which
you're replying, so we know what it is you're referring to, and then
below the quotation, type your response. If you're responding to more
than one parts of the original, then quote each part separately and
follow each part with your response.

Now, I know that you may not personally prefer this format and that you
may disagree with some of the reasoning here. We very much respect this.

searchable, so the answers to many v1.x problems will still be
available there.

Some info on v1.x is also available on the unofficial support
forum (see below) and there are no plans to delete that info at
this time just because many have upgraded to v2.x - there will
still be users who prefer to stay with v1.x and to whom that info

The forum will still offer support on v1.x even if some on this

power failure during fetching mails or compressing the mailbox.

certificates and servers- at wits end...

2003-09-15 Thread RedLeg
Hello List!

I've been lurking the list(s) since December (when I bought TB1.62r) and
had a couple forays into the archives but have not yet found a way to
get SSL/TLS working for me on any servers with that capability.

I really need your help here- detailed steps, if possible, would be most
appreciated. The first day TB!2 became available for upgrade I jumped
as well used every beta since December in an attempt to get this to
work.

About my 3 problem mail accounts:

AKO- us.army.mil is POP3, IMAP4 (preferred), and SMTP, all SSL secure to
dedicated and require authentication for use. Server Cert is DOD issued
and the entire chain has been imported to system trusted root store.

MRB- .myrealbox.com is POP3, IMAP4 (preferred), and SMTP all allow
secure to dedicated and StartTLS option, I have to authenticate to SMTP
to send past my ISP... Server cert is Comodo issued but has a goofy
*.myrealbox.com server name that TB refuses to entertain. I'm not sure
how to import their cert to system trusted root store- I don't know how
to download a .p* or .cer from the site...

Cotse- pop.cotse.com (POP3) and www.cotse.net (SMTP) only and allow
secure to dedicated port and StartTLS option. The POP cert is a self CA
job and the SMTP cert is issued by Equifax. I have requested they send
me a copy of the certs used so I can import them to root...

More about my ultra-frustrating problem g On AKO I can finally direct
connect to pop and imap, not sure what happened here to allow this, but
I cannot send SMTP secure (I can send plain though)... I really need the
dialog box that pops up and asks to trust this cert to have an enabled
'add to trusted' button. TB continues to complain of the certificate
heirarchy... Getting this one working properly is critical, especially
smtp since the pop and imap work when I keep eyes on for popup dialog...

On MRB I get absolutely nowhere, TB complains of server and cert not
matching pop3/imap/smtp.myrealbox.com is server name, *.myrealbox.com is
the cert name presented... I really need to get this one working, at
least to prompt me for permission rather than silently fail- every
single time...

On COTSE, neither the pop nor the smtp work, the failure is during the
TLS handshake and again is silent- no user prompt to accept nor add to
trusted.

Is there really any reason this process has not been made simple to the
point of fool proof? (maybe a post to tbbeta about that;)

I use JBMail3.2 off a USBkey drive and it works flawlessly, asking me
the first time if I want to trust the cert and making a hash of it from
there, once done- there are no issues unless there is a change.

I must say I love TB, especially since IMAP has developed so nicely, but
when I bought it in Dec- the version change log was what made me decide
TB was for me and that was the exceptional (sounding) SSL/TLS support as
well integrated certificate function and PGP support.

ok, I know I talk alot, especially for my first post and all- but if you
can feel my pain I beg you to reply as detailed as my described plight
is...

Most Sincerely,

LDAP over SSL

2003-09-15 Thread Robert F. Beeger
Hi!

I'm playing aroung with IMAP on The Bat 2 and the last thing I need to
get working is to connect our LDAP address book. The problem here is
that the LDAP server only works over SSL.

Somehow I cannot find any option to create an LDAP address book with
SSL. Am I missing something or is it really not there.

Thanks in advance for any answers.

What about an item for the wish list? Under View-Display-Advanced

You can actually achieve that very easily with the Search tool. Search

Mine is considerably quicker with v.2 than before. I don't see any
progress indicator, however; maybe it's because it empties the folder
(with several hundred messages) in a fraction of a second?

I've figured out a pattern. If I empty a large folder of regular
sized, no attachment emails, it occurs more rapidly than before.
If I empty a folder of emails that all have attachments, it is
much slower than before. It seems that, for some reason, message
size has become an issue in emptying the folder whereas it wasn't
previously.

Another thing I've noticed. If I empty several hundred large
attachment emails from the Inbox, it takes several minutes. When
I empty the same messages from the Trash, it is instantaneous.

Here's what I don't get, Peter. A bug, at least to my way of
thinking, is essentially a *quirk* in a program.

For example, if someone is doing something (or has something on his
computer) that the programmer couldn't possibly have allowed/planned
for, the program might not work exactly as advertised, or it might not
work at all under those specific conditions, etc.

But Scheduler doesn't do just about *everything* that it's *supposed*
to do, so how can that just be a bug? It's like Scheduler was just
an rough draft add-on that isn't/wasn't ready for prime time yet. And
why there are no work-arounds for it, either.

So why even include it at all? I just don't get it.

Look, I love TB!, don't get me wrong. And I will wait patiently for
Rit-Labs to get Scheduler to work as advertised. But the thing I've
always loved most about it is, with the lone exception of Agent, it
has always been my most BOMB PROOF program, *very* stable, etc. I
never had to worry about stuff not working as advertised.

I can't say that anymore.

have never been able to use it. It's a shame as I'm sure it'd be

PGP and attached files

2003-09-15 Thread Sean Stark
Hello TBUDL,

I'm sending an email with an attachment. I pick SHFT-ALT-E (Sign and
encyrpt entire message). The message gets encrypted but not the
attachment. PGP/Mime is set to Auto. Under PGP Options use PGP/Mime
when sending emails is ticked.

Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong ? or what I'm not doing ? I just
want the attachment to also be encrytped.

When I receive an email with an encypted attachment I choose decrypt
and *before* I type anything it displays the msg box The passphrase
you entered does not match any of the listed keys. That msg popup is redisplayed
each time I hit the OK button (about a dozen times). When it stops
redisplaying, I get the chance to enter the passphrase and all seems to work fine.
Just one question: it seems
that the only way to decrypt the in-coming attached file is to save the
file, then decrypt it outside of thebat!. Is that correct ? or is
there a way to decrypt the attached file within thebat ?

Yes even when it's very slow :-( I can't watch scrolling games or
anything like that either - they have the same effect. Even using
a microfilm/fiche reader does it to me. :-(

If its any consolation, it happens here also. I believe it is a bug
 that's been previously reported.

There was a bug that was reported for the first v2-beta, and that one
has been fixed. I am not sure whether what you describe under XP has
been reported; I see all of you use XP and Shauna even reprots to have
seen it under 1.x.

I suggest you check the bugtracker whether this bug is really reported
there, and add it if not.

More SmartBat/Scheduler monkeybusiness

2003-09-15 Thread Jack Morrison
First, create a new pad in SmartBat. For example, a new pad named
Clips.

Now try to delete it. Good luck with that!

It will remain in the SmartBat's tabular index no matter what you do.
You can even fire a cruise missile at it, totally destroying it via
Microsoft Explorer, but it will *still* be included in the tabular index.

Like kudzu, you just can't kill it.

What I will do is try it on a standalone PC that isn't on the
network. One without any personal files, shared drives etc... I
won't put mine online without a firewall in case it compromises
 the network.

Good thinking.

Ahhh I've just thought... are you highlighting the [brackets] as
well? If so it won't work... you have to highlight the text
 inside the brackets! ;-)

We might be talking about different things: Yes, I can copy and
paste. But this is not what I am talking about. *I* don't highlight
anything, TB does it for me.

Again:

Works = www.url.com
Doesn't work = [www.url.com]

The difference I am seeing that the first one is light-blue and
underlined in both TB's editor when I type it, and the viewer when I
read it. You should see the same. On the first, I can click and it
opens in the browser. The second is just text and I would have to cp
it into my browser's address field.

I hope I have explained it better now.

Confirmed. When you report it to backtrack, please advise the Bug ID
number for those of us who want to keep an eye on it.

You can even fire a cruise missile at it, totally destroying it via
Microsoft Explorer, but it will *still* be included in the tabular index.

I didn't try the cruise missile thing, so that part is not
confirmed... By MS Explorer, I guess you mean windows Explorer and not
Internet Explorer, and I used total Commander instead and deleted the
file while TB closed. Upon restart of TB, the tab is still there in
SmartBat, but of course the text is gone. But it is not empty:

I had two entries in the Main Tab. When I open SmartBat, the new tab
is opened automatically, and I see the older of the two entries from
the maintab in the new tab. When I go to the main tab, that entry is
missing. Back to the new tab, it is gone there too. Closing SmartBat
and reopening it shows the entry back in the new tab and missing from
the main tab, but gone again when going back to the new tab. No text
file for the new tab on the HD. Anybody can confirm this?

So, I type something into the new tab. A text file gets created on the
HD. Close SmartBat, reopen, the old entry from the main tab is there
again, plus the newly-type text. Main tab is still missing that entry.
Back to new tab shows only the newly-typed text. Text file on HD
contains only the newly-typed text. Is anybody seeing the same?
