Welcome to the defective behaviour of TB! HTML viewer and editor.
If things (features & bugfixes) continue like they have in the last 2
years, you'll notice an increase in useless feaures and nagging bugs,
but nothing will be fixed.

Best practise: stick to plain text.

Are you using a "real" spam filter or do you try to do things manually?

Have you looked at the message source with F9? I assume that the message
consists of an empty text part & an html part that contains the image.

I'm asking, because I receive such spam messages too (last one a couple of
days ago, the .gif announced various medical products), and K9 identifies
the messages as spam just fine. I don't know when I trained K9 to do that,
but it was definitely not very much training, that much is certain. :-)

The html part also contains some "distraction" (like "let your hair down
sugar, shake it free and do the dixieland rock with me", but K9 didn't lose
track despite that.

Can't Access Years of TB - (Upgraded System, Reinstalled TB) - Help, Please

2005-01-04 Thread Jerrold Mundis
Hi,

I have been using TB 1.48d (the Christmas edition) on a Windows ME system
happily and without a hitch for years. A week ago, I changed from my old
computer to a new machine with Windows XP, reinstalled my software and migrated
my data.

Everything went successfully but The Bat!

The Bat! no longer works. It thinks it is a brand new program, telling me I
have X number of days left in this trial period, and will not find or recognize
any of my old folders, which are sitting right there in TB's directory.

I am now unable to gain access to my folders in TB, along with their several
thousands of acrhived personal and business emails, or my sorting rules or
anything else. This is a professional catastrophe. I am using webmail on an
emergency basis, which is better than a stone and chisel and a carrier condor,
but not too much (or so it feels).

I know there is a relatively simple way to correct this, but those archived
nstructions exist in one of the folders that the newly reinstalled TB will not
recognize and thus I can't get at them. I have done a search in TBUDL
archives, but can't find anything.

Please, I'm willing to relicense the program. I happy to download and purchase
the newest version. Anything to make TB functional for me again.

Does anyone have access to the magic bullet, or a simple three-step miraculous
procedure? Can you tell me how to get my beloved Bat back, along with all its
records and many marvelous sorting rules?

Thank you immensely (he said, sinking slowly into the dark pit of webmail).

Be well,
Jerry

Here's what went wrong: You forgot to backup and transfer the registry
key. That contains all the vital bits like your registration code,
your account names and where the folders are.

If you still have the old computer, run up RegEdit and locate the
HKLM/Software/Rit key and export it. Import it to the new system and
try again.

Because you've already been running it in nobbled mode on the new
system, you may need to re-add your accounts to get them up properly.
To do this, add them with the *exact same name*. TB will find the
folders and, after a quick confirm by you, import the mail.

If he doesn't have the old PC... Been thinking about this, but it has
been a long time since I used 1.62 (newer that 1.4, but still :).
Didn't they also send an e-mail with the key that had to be used with
a password (memory is vague) to register it? If he kept all his mail,
that key will likely still be in the TBB files (which are just text
files). Don't know how large they are, but wordpad might be able to
handle it and find that e-mail and registration string...

AS far as the folders, I've done the same for a new PC. Same name,
they will be found (you might have to look at the account(s) folder in
the TB directory if you've forgotten).

I think the macro is supposed to do as above, where all the blank lines
are quoted with the ">". %Quotes leaves blank lines, but doesn't quote
them.

However, I can't get %QuoteEmptyLines to work. I use a QT that was put

Personally, I think the blank lines look better without the ">".

Indeed it does, see https://www.ritlabs.com/bt/view.php?id=3427

It doesn't seem that hard to fix, but it's received no
attention from the development team.

I'll copy 9val - he usually gets things done.

That's a mighty old version. I think at the time, the internal
backup-function still didn't work properly.

JM> A week ago, I changed from my old computer to a new machine with
JM> Windows XP, reinstalled my software and migrated my data.

How did you back up TB before migrating to the new OS? How did you
migrate?

JM> The Bat! no longer works. It thinks it is a brand new program,
JM> telling me I have X number of days left in this trial period,

Yes, that's normal if you didn't backup and restore the registry key.
Once you get access to your mail base, and if you kept the
registration email, you can run that again. If not, you will have to
type your key from the print-out of that mail you did when you first
received it.

Keep in mind that those old TB versions still needed a password to
complete the registration, and this password you will have to have in
your memory. If not, you can request a replacement key from Ritlabs
for US$ 5 or so. - I don't recommend that, I recommend upgrading to
either v2.12.00 or even the current v3 version (but wait: they have
been some changes in the folder structure in the meantime, so you'll
need to take it a step at a time).

JM> and will not find or recognize any of my old folders, which are
JM> sitting right there in TB's directory.

1. First back-up all the files now.

2. Then, create all the accounts that you had in the previous version (it
is important that you use the same account names).

3. Then, hit crtl-shft-alt-L. The "lost folders" should now all appear.

4. Close TB.

5. Copy the account.* from the back-up you created in step one over the
account.* files that were created when you created the accounts in
step two.

6. Reopen TB. All you account settings (server names, passwords, etc)
should now have re-appeared. Also your filters should be back in
place.

Let us know whether this worked. We will run you through an upgrade to
v2 then. If you want to stick with v1, I recommend upgrading to 1.69r,
the last of her kind.

JM> Does anyone have access to the magic bullet, or a simple
JM> three-step miraculous procedure?

Six steps. I missed the goal.

JM> Can you tell me how to get my beloved Bat back, along with all its
JM> records and many marvelous sorting rules?

Let me know whether this works. I'll go to work in a few minutes and
will not check this email address until I come home in the evening, so
let's hope someone will chip in during that time.

JM> Thank you immensely (he said, sinking slowly into the dark pit of webmail).

Thats pretty nice feature. Question, How do you refresh everything
again after using Alt+Click other than restarting TB?

Ctrl-= (or Esc, but only if you're in the main window, not a folder

Thanks Marck. I omitted last line of reply template and also the quick
templates it calls up.

It was the pair of templates that the List recommended to ensure that
any quoted text is automatically wrapped on the TBFAQ macro library:

http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/Library.html#rewrap

and I thought had served me well before, shown at foot of this email.

So have now simply put

%QUOTES

and this should be just fine.
