Archiving in a database

2007-02-25 Thread Jan Rifkinson
Battyfolk,

I'm wondering about the best way to do this. I know the different
formats that TB! can save files in & I've found that 'eml' is probably
the best way to go for my purposes (buy maybe not).

In saving a folder of msgs to 'eml' the problems I ran across are

each msg has to be saved individually
each msg with the same subj can't be over-written

With all msgs saved to eml format in one folder, I get headers + msgs
which I can then import as separate items in a database. There may be
other ways...

Any better archiving ideas?

Thanks.

Sending issue

2005-11-15 Thread Jan Rifkinson
Battyfolk,

I have been having trouble sending. TB! hesitates for a long time,
sometimes sends, sometimes doesn't. When it doesn't send, I'm also not
able to save the msg I've written.

I've checked my account settings, i.e. SMTP, & they are correct.
Other email programs send w/o problems or hesitations.

I have a feeling this is a local problem but I'll be darned if I know
where to look.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be really appreciated.

I'm going try sending this post; hope it works.

Thanks.

junk mail filter -- need some advice

2005-10-03 Thread Jan Rifkinson
Battyfolk,

For a long time now I have been getting a piece of spam that I can't
filter out & it's really getting on my nerves.

Message is entirely HTML w attachment
There is no text
spam comes in the form of a gif (name changes as well)
All headers seem random

X-Spam: [F=0.5893273767; heur=0.727(2800); stat=0.349;

I've looked thru current crop of filters and can't seem to put
anything together that works for this piece of trash.

I was thinking of something along the lines of:

any message
with no text
and attachment
w from not in my address book
move to junk file
and mark read

Anyone got an idea to throw my way?

Thanks,

Hi Roelof. Thanks for replying to my post. What I'd like to be
able to do is to select msg + headers I mentioned to input into a
database I maintain with all kinds of info in it.

So for example, if I wanted to clip/copy this msg & add it to a
TB! tech db, I would want to have the msg + 4 headers. Now I can't
do that unless I save to txt file first.

Otherwise, I can only reveal *all* the headers to select & copy
which is much more information than I need in the DB.

Are my goals/my question clearer now?

Thanks.

Moving off

2004-09-03 Thread Jan Rifkinson
As a courtesy to all of you who have helped me over the years, a
short note of thanks & to say that I'm taking a break from TB! for
a variety of reasons.

The recent beta/new version/licensing bruhaha sort of turned me
off, but more important to me, I wrote two polite requests for
information from RIT labs & I've rcvd no response. Not that I
expect RITLabs to answer every post sent to them but I do expect
that the reasonable questions I asked, should be answered in some
form. That didn't happen.

Not big deal but, like many of you, these are very active lists &
require fair amount of time to read/respond & sometimes throw in a
helping hand for another user or even to report a bug or two or
three... to RIT Labs so they can improve the product.

My feeling is if they don't have time to respopnd a couple of
simple questions, then I don't feel right spending my time on
their behalf either.

There are a # of other email clients on the market now that are
lapping at TB!'s heels. Most of us don't use all of TB!'s powers
anyway, or at least, I don't.

So take care.

I think I'll play with Poco now.

Hi Alexander.

I tried your experiment but set it up a little differently.

However in this case I don't think it makes a difference because I
encountered a similar problem as the one you describe.

For the record, this was my set up:

 recipient = a
 sender = a
 subject = b
 message = b

selected folders: in & known in several accounts

As soon as I clicked ok after setting up all the parameters, TB!
froze. The next time I tried it, it shuddered but then completed
the task. But it was not an easy process for TB! and I had it
searching folders that had only a few messages in them. So my
conclusion is that there probably is a problem somewhere.

Now I'm using a beta version so I'm going to take the liberty of
cross posting this on the beta list. Hope you don't mind.

I don't think it correctly counts the spam mails that are caught

Hi Alexander.

So as advertised, I de-activated all my TB! filters even though I
understand BayesIT filters are supposed to do their work before
  the TB! filters.

So, tonight I have 376 msgs in my junk folder. I marked none of
them as junk, i.e. they were all junked automatically --
presumably by BayesIT. So here are my stats

Spam Stats, last 24 hours (BayesIt! 0.5.11)
Total Spam Emails: 5
Total Clean Emails: 155
BayesIT guessed right 99.4% of the time
My email is 3.125% spam

Anyone have any ideas beyond the notion that the macros don't
work. Or put it another way, has anyone found that the macros do
work & represent some real numbers?

  TIA

Hi Michael.

OK, I think it's sinking in.

But here's my problem or what started me down this road:

In my junk file I currently have 95 msgs from today
  Yet here's the stat output

Spam Stats, last 24 hours (BayesIt! 0.5.11)
Total Spam Emails: 2
Total Clean Emails: 182
BayesIT guessed right 99.5% of the time
My email is 1.086957% spam

So there's a problem somewhere unless I'm totally off the wall.

I do use other filters to move obvious spam to my spam folder,

difference between the real #s & the reported #s?

filter action not working

2004-07-17 Thread jan . rifkinson
Battyfolks,

I have tried unsuccessfully to get to TB! to take an action on msgs that has been assigned to a
color group.

I have tried this via inbox & via read msgs.

Is this not possible to do?

If you are wondering why I am doing this, it goes like this:
I asked TB! to color code specifically annoying spam. TB! was
successful @ this task.

Then I added the next level to flag to test it again. Also tested
w move.

I've done these tests because my goal is to delete these msgs from
the server so I want to be sure I'm not getting any f/p.

I guess if the color coding is working properly I can assume that
my filter is working properly, nevertheless I don't understand why
TB! isn't taking this 2nd level action. Maybe it's a TB!
limitation. Or a user limitation.

Any thoughts or explanation would be appreciated.

TIA

I'm not smart enough to do it that way.

First thing is to filter out all msgs that are not addressed to
you. That will take care of the majority of the msgs.

Then I set all my filters for those subjects whom/that
I know, i.e. mail lists, etc.

Then I set all my filters for entries in my ABs.

Finally, I flag those msgs which don't fall into any of those
categories. Eventually a pattern emerges & I filter for that as
  well.

I rarely, if ever, filter on content for the reasons that you
  cite.

I really haven't changed my filters for months but just started
to fool around again. I will tell you that between 175-300
pieces of email end up in my junk folder daily. And only rarely
do I get a false/positive. And almost *never* do I find a piece
of junk mail in my inbox.

This was not my experience with Bayesit filtration & I subjected
my filters to thousands of pieces of spam.

I'm happy to amplify or help if you need further help.

The poster did not ask for TB! filters. The poster asked for
Bayesit suggestions. Mine is to dump it.

If there is interest in how to defeat spam w/o bayesit, it has
been discussed quite frequently on this list &,
in addition, I'd be happy to provide the basic filters I use to
  do the job for me.

Roelof, thanks for helping me out but, to be clear, are you
saying everything is ok except that I include 'kludges' rather
than sender & therefor it won't work? Or to put it another way,
if I change the first string to 'sender' instead of kludges, it

Your idea of AB groups is certainly logical, probably 6 of one
half dozen <12> of the other if I could just get it working :-)

  Thanks.

I just noticed something -- perhaps a buglet.

When I look at my own msg in the list, I can see that it is

color group font setting

2004-06-19 Thread Jan Rifkinson
Playing around with color group font setting, I discovered that user can not assign individual fonts to a group color.

Just to be clear, I'm not talking about font style, but the
ability, for example, of choosing a script font for a particular
color group in addition to the color/text/background options.

Or am I missing something?\

strange outbox error msg

2004-06-12 Thread Jan Rifkinson
This was a new one on me.

I opened a new msg window
I added a rather large attachment
Then I started writing what turned out to be a rather long
message.

While typing, a TB! error/warning window popped up noting that the
outbox (empty at that time) was not able to save the msg, then
approaching 2megs in size.

Don't know if this msg is connected to the split message setting,
if it's a convenience, a buglet or something else.

Whatever it was, I'd never seen it before.

Anyone else?
