Black Folders

2008-03-12 Thread Maurice McAdam
Dear Fellow-Listers,

Last night, I was tired and decided to download 4.0.18 (professional).

Instead of my regular little folder icons, I suddenly find myself with
an ugly black box for each folder, and unable to re-install a previous
version over this current version. The folder bar at the top of the
screen is also quite askew.

Any quick work-around or should I remove TB! completely and then do a
reinstall of 3.99 ?

Maybe that's where XP, in its wisdom, locks up all stray documents.

I really do appreciate all your detective work, Thomas, but, at the
moment, I do not have time to dig any deeper. I usually go along with
the TB! default settings.

Henceforth, though, I shall make a point of storing "external
attachments in message bodies" - perhaps this was the default setting
in some previous version...

Perhaps the X-header tells TB! where the file is, but for me it is all
gibberish.

I have always gone along with the default position. For me this
behaviour is new, but henceforth I'll opt for keeping attachments with
the message - but more importantly, I guess (and thinking on my feet
now) I'll choose this option when I do a backup. Since I have done
quite a lot of restoring in the past from various backups, I am now
beginning to suspect that this could well be the source of the problem.
Many thanks.

I have three active accounts.

I'd suggest the first thing to do would be to form a group, in the
address book, for individual recipients, e.g. Colleagues, Family, etc.
Then you right click on the name of the group in order to define its
properties.

In New Message you put
%ACCOUNT="GS1"Hello %tofname,

[where 'GS1' would be your first active account]
etc etc

I find that a rather strange suggestion. I have arranged my settings
so that TB! downloads mail on startup; I've also tried to download,
only when I do Ctrl-F2, with many shades in-between (I even purchased
the Professional Edition), but all with very relative degrees of
success.

Logically, I guess, if I stopped trying to access my email for a week,
I would be free of the problem for a good seven days...

Thank you for your input. I will think on it.

I have just attempted another backup, this time disabling (in the

What is extremely curious however, is the strange behavior, which
greys out 'Maintenance' in the Folder menu, whenever I highlight the
name of a given account e.g. Main Identity.
But, when I highlight individual folders e.g. 'Inbox' 'Sent' etc
'Maintenance' is suddenly accessible.

Tools, Restore

2004-08-14 Thread Maurice McAdam
Hello TBUDLers,

After losing half my msg base and my address book (Friday 13th? - no,
not really, it happened yesterday) I followed Roelof's advice on
creating fictitious accounts. I thought I was out of the woods, until
I discovered that nothing that I could do, would bring back my address
book. I opened the address book and tried

>File, Import From, and even
>File, Open Address Book

as well as the various permutations therein.
No luck

I have now spent several hours trying to recover my address book,
which has somehow got badly corrupted. At one point, there was a huge
list of cabalistic signs or gibberish. I've got Intermediate and
Trusted Root CA, but none of my own addresses.

What annoys me most, is that I have been backing up religiously (at
least once a week), using the internal function (Tools, Backup).
Now that I need to reinstall with Tools, Restore - and irrespective of
the date of the back up - the Restore refuses to perform, apart from
doubling up the number of messages in the msg base.

I used tbkdigger to explore TB's internal backups. It was interesting
to see the names of the files and attachments in each account, but
even with Tbkdigger I could not see my address book.

Surely it is backed up along with the msg base?
If so, where is it?
And why doesn't Restore do what it is supposed to do and roll
everything back to where it was last week/last month ?

Don't know. Have just done a backup _disabling_ "store
external attachments in message bodies", and have ended up
with a much larger file ; perhaps one of the more
experienced members could explain things.

I have been quite happy with AVG (the free version), but on
two recent occasions it detected viruses which arrived,
through one of the children using Kazaa.

Each time, I received a msg saying that my computer had a
virus and that I should run AVG. Which I did. However, I was
never given the opportunity to put the infected file in the
vault, or to disinfect it. AVG continued to tell me my
computer was infected. But could do nothing about it.

Do you think that's because I had the free version?

Dear Batters,

Thank you Tomasz, Peter, Gerard for your responses. After
several calls to my ISP's help line, I'm finally up and
running once more.

It's good to know that the problem had nothing to do with
The Bat but rather with my ISP.

When I got the following Bat message :

"Some tasks are now active.
Do you want to exit when they are finished?"

my screen seemed to freeze. The only way I could exit was
Ctrl-Alt-Del.

This apparently is not the thing to do; when I tried logging
on once more, I found the mailbox locked (some sort of
protection, if two or more people try to log on to the same
address at the same time). And, as the technician said, it
remains locked for 20 minutes when it is released
automatically.

Many thanks,
Maurice

Mailbox Locked by a Pop3 Session

2003-03-11 Thread Maurice McAdam
Dear Batters,

I cannot download my mail because I keep getting the above
message, so there's probably little point asking for help on
the list (since I will be unable to receive your answers).

I'd be grateful therefore if someone could write me at

[EMAIL PROTECTED]

with a solution.

My problem started with version 1.61, when I ended up
downloading over and over again the same messages. I wasn't
aware at the time that one could delete them on the server
(Account, Dispatch Mail on Server): a workaround, but at
least one that worked.

I read somewhere on this list that one should leave them for
1 day on the server (Account, properties, Mail Management).
That worked. Since then, a single download did the trick. I
installed v1.62i last night, opted for my original 'Delete
received messages from server'. This morning the downloading
hung. I turned off my machine, started up but still have
same problem. I'm snookered, stymied.

TIA
Maurice

Actually yes:

but when I tried to find it with Windows Explorer, I got
as far as the temporary internet files, but could not

I use ie version 6, so am intrigued by the significance

Any further thoughts?

I should perhaps add that it's something of an academic

AVG's 'Move to Virus Vault' & Parenting

2003-01-08 Thread Maurice McAdam
Hello Batters,

Grisoft's free anti-virus program told me today that
my computer was infected with VBS/NAPTIME.A@MM.

I promptly ran my anti-virus program, (System Suite 4
which used to be called Fix-it Utilities) and chose
the the so-called deep scan: it found nothing. I
then downloaded the latest Grisoft anti-virus update
to disinfect my system. The guilty file apparently is
  'jenniferp[1].htm'

I was told "We recommend you select the 'Move to Virus
Vault'", which I did, but the computer then hung. I
have since repeated the AVG virus scan; the same
troublesome file is flagged, but each time I click on
'Move to Virus Vault' the computer hangs.

In an attempt to have computer literate 'kids', the
three of them, have always been allowed access to the
machine, whenever it's free. My wife is the fifth user
(I'm the only one using The Bat). Would appreciate any
suggestions from "responsible parents" - whatever that
  is - on the list.

 Many thanks for yours.

MM>> Does Ctrl-Alt-Shift-L search the entire hard disk for the

RO> It makes TB look for lost folders in the account directories and their

I consider myself very much a newbie, even though I've
been using TheBat! for three years. I've been setting up
new accounts, deleting others and never paying too much
attention as to where the stuff all ended up.

Running out of space on C:, I've been trying to move TB
to my E: drive. I was warned off attempting to do this
manually (something to do with the registry?), so I used
the Powerdesk utility. Despite a couple of error
messages along the way, the transfer seemed to be
successful. When I click on properties for the bat
desktop icon, I get the following

"E:\Program Files\The Bat!\thebat.exe"

yet my messages, including this one, continue to be
saved on the C drive. What gives?

I have just downloaded Mailbag Assistant in an attempt
to get out of the mess but don't yet know enough about
it to know if that can provide some sort of solution.

I checked the Tbudl archives on "Moving TB" but that
seems to refer to moving TB to another machine.

Would appreciate any suggestions.
